Cosmological Constraints from Hubble parameter $H(z)$ and SN Ia observations

In this paper, we use a set of observational $H(z)$ data (OHD) to constrain the $Λ$CDM cosmology. This data set can be derived from the differential ages of the passively evolving galaxies. Meanwhile, the $\mathcal {A}$-parameter, which describes the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) peak, and the newly measured value of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) shift parameter $\mathcal {R}$ are used to present combinational constraints on the same cosmology. The combinational constraints favor an accelerating flat universe while the flat $Λ$CDM cosmology is also analyzed in the same way. We obtain a result compatible with that by many other independent cosmological observations. We find that the observational $H(z)$ data set is a complementarity to other cosmological probes.

Dark energy and neutrino mass constraints from weak lensing, supernova, and relative galaxy ages

We use the current weak lensing data to constrain the equation of state of dark energy $w$ and the total mass of massive neutrinos $\sum m_ν$. The constraint on $w$ would be weak if only the current weak lensing data are used. With the addition of other observational data such as the type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillation, and the high redshift Hubble parameter data $H(z)$ derived from relative galaxy ages to break the degeneracy, the result is significantly improved. For the pure $w$CDM model without massive neutrinos, we find $w=-1.00^{+0.10}_{-0.12}$. For the $w$CDM model with the massive neutrino component, we show that the constraint on $w$ is almost unchanged, there is very little degeneracy between $w$ and $\sum m_ν$. After marginalizing over other parameters, we obtain the probability distribution function of $\sum m_ν$, and find that the upper limit is $\sum m_ν \leq 0.8$ eV at 95.5% confidence level for the combined data sets. Our constraints of $w$ and $\sum m_ν$ are both compatible and comparable with the constraints obtained from the WMAP 5-year data.

Scaling Relation between Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect and X-ray Luminosity and Scale-Free Evolution of Cosmic Baryon Field

It has been revealed recently that, in the scale free range, i.e. from the scale of the onset of nonlinear evolution to the scale of dissipation, the velocity and mass density fields of cosmic baryon fluid are extremely well described by the self-similar log-Poisson hierarchy. As a consequence of this evolution, the relations among various physical quantities of cosmic baryon fluid should be scale invariant, if the physical quantities are measured in cells on scales larger than the dissipation scale, regardless the baryon fluid is in virialized dark halo, or in pre-virialized state. We examine this property with the relation between the Compton parameter of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, $y(r)$, and X-ray luminosity, $L_{\rm x}(r)$, where $r$ being the scale of regions in which $y$ and $L_{\rm x}$ are measured. According to the self-similar hierarchical scenario of nonlinear evolution, one should expect that 1.) in the $y(r)$-$L_x(r)$ relation, $y(r)=10^{A(r)}[L_{\rm x}(r)]^{α(r)}$, the coefficients $A(r)$ and $α(r)$ are scale-invariant; 2.) The relation $y(r)=10^{A(r)}[L_{\rm x}(r)]^{α(r)}$ given by cells containing collapsed objects is also available for cells without collapsed objects, only if $r$ is larger than the dissipation scale. These two predictions are well established with a scale decomposition analysis of observed data, and a comparison of observed $y(r)$-$L_x(r)$ relation with hydrodynamic simulation samples. The implication of this result on the characteristic scales of non-gravitational heating is also addressed.

Thermodynamical properties of dark energy with the equation of state $% ω=ω_{0}+ω_{1}z$

The thermodynamical properties of dark energy are usually investigated with the equation of state $ω=ω_{0}+ω_{1}z$. Recent observations show that our universe is accelerating, and the apparent horizon and the event horizon vary with redshift $z$. When definitions of the temperature and entropy of a black hole are used to the two horizons of the universe, we examine the thermodynamical properties of the universe which is enveloped by the apparent horizon and the event horizon respectively. We show that the first and the second laws of thermodynamics inside the apparent horizon in any redshift are satisfied, while they are broken down inside the event horizon in some redshift. Therefore, the apparent horizon for the universe may be the boundary of thermodynamical equilibrium for the universe like the event horizon for a black hole.

Constraint on Cosmological Model with Matter Creation Using Complementary Astronomical Observations

The universe with adiabatic matter creation is considered. It is thought that the negative pressure caused by matter creation can play the role of a dark energy component, and drive the accelerating expansion of the universe. Using the Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) data, the observational Hubble parameter data, the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data and the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data, we make constraints on the cosmological parameters, assuming a spatially flat universe. Our results show that the model with matter creation is consistent with the SNe Ia data, while the joint constraints of all these observational data disfavor this model. If the cosmological constant is taken into account, a traditional model without matter creation is favored by the joint observations.

Constraints on the DGP Universe Using Observational Hubble parameter

In this work, we use observations of the Hubble parameter from the differential ages of passively evolving galaxies and the recent detection of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) at $z_1=0.35$ to constrain the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) universe. For the case with a curvature term, we set a prior $h=0.73\pm0.03$ and the best-fit values suggest a spatially closed Universe. For a flat Universe, we set $h$ free and we get consistent results with other recent analyses.

Statefinder diagnostic for the modified polytropic Cardassian universe

We apply the Statefinder diagnostic to the Modified Polytropic Cardassian Universe in this work. We find that the Statefinder diagnostic is quite effective to distinguish Cardassian models from a series of other cosmological models. The $s-r$ plane is used to classify the Modified Polytropic Cardassian models into six cases. The evolutionary trajectories in the $s-r$ plane for the cases with different $n$ and $β$ reveal different evolutionary properties of the universe. In addition, we combine the observational $H(z)$ data, the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data and the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) data to make a joint analysis. We find that \textbf{Case 2} can be excluded at the 68.3% confidence level and any case is consistent with the observations at the 95.4% confidence level.

Constraints on holographic dark energy models using the differential ages of passively evolving galaxies

Using the absolute ages of passively evolving galaxies observed at different redshifts, one can obtain the differential ages, the derivative of redshift $z$ with respect to the cosmic time $t$ (i.e. ${\rm d} z/{\rm d}t$). Thus, the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ can be measured through the relation $H(z)=-({\rm d} z/{\rm d}t)/(1+z)$. By comparing the measured Hubble parameter at different redshifts with the theoretical one containing free cosmological parameters, one can constrain current cosmological models. In this paper, we use this method to present the constraint on a spatially flat Friedman-Robert-Walker Universe with a matter component and a holographic dark energy component, in which the parameter $c$ plays a significant role in this dark energy model. Firstly we consider three fixed values of $c$=0.6, 1.0 and 1.4 in the fitting of data. If we set $c$ free, the best fitting values are $c=0.26$, $Ω_{\rm m0}=0.16$, $h=0.9998$. It is shown that the holographic dark energy behaves like a quintom-type at the $1σ$ level. This result is consistent with some other independent cosmological constrains, which imply that $c<1.0$ is favored. We also test the results derived from the differential ages using another independent method based on the lookback time to galaxy clusters and the age of the universe. It shows that our results are reliable.

X-ray Emission of Baryonic Gas in the Universe: Luminosity-Temperature Relationship and Soft-Band Background

We study the X-ray emission of baryon fluid in the universe using the WIGEON cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. It has been revealed that cosmic baryon fluid in the nonlinear regime behaves like Burgers turbulence, i.e. the fluid field consists of shocks. Like turbulence in incompressible fluid, the Burgers turbulence plays an important role in converting the kinetic energy of the fluid to thermal energy and heats the gas. We show that the simulation sample of the $Λ$CDM model without adding extra heating sources can fit well the observed distributions of X-ray luminosity versus temperature ($L_{\rm x}$ vs. $T$) of galaxy groups and is also consistent with the distributions of X-ray luminosity versus velocity dispersion ($L_{\rm x}$ vs. $σ$). Because the baryonic gas is multiphase, the $L_{\rm x}-T$ and $L_{\rm x}-σ$ distributions are significantly scattered. If we describe the relationships by power laws $L_{\rm x}\propto T^{α_{LT}}$ and $L_{\rm x}\propto σ^{α_{LV}}$, we find $α_{LT}>2.5$ and $α_{LV}>2.1$. The X-ray background in the soft $0.5-2$ keV band emitted by the baryonic gas in the temperature range $10^5 50\barρ_{\rm dm}$ is generally clustered and discretely distributed. Therefore, almost all of the soft X-ray background comes from clustered sources, and the contribution from truly diffuse gas is probably negligible. This point agrees with current X-ray observations.

Reconstruction of the One-point Distribution of Convergence from Weak Lensing by Large-scale Structure

Weak lensing measurements are starting to provide statistical maps of the distribution of matter in the universe that are increasingly precise and complementary to cosmic microwave background maps. The probability distribution (PDF) provides a powerful tool to test non-Gausian features in the convergence field and to discriminate the different cosmological models. In this letter, we present a new PDF space Wiener filter approach to reconstruct the probability density function of the convergence from the noisy convergence field. We find that for parameters comparable to the CFHT legacy survey, the averaged PDF of the convergence in a 3 degree field can be reconstructed with an uncertainty of about 10%, even though the pointwise PDF is noise dominated.

The $Ω_{DE}-Ω_{M}$ Plane in Dark Energy Cosmology

The dark energy cosmology with the equation of state $w=constant$ is considered in this paper. The $Ω_{DE}-Ω_{M}$ plane has been used to study the present state and expansion history of the universe. Through the mathematical analysis, we give the theoretical constraint of cosmological parameters. Together with some observations such as the transition redshift from deceleration to acceleration, more precise constraint on cosmological parameters can be acquired.

Strong Lensing Probabilities in a Cosmological Model with a Running Primordial Power Spectrum

The combination of the first-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data with other finer scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments (CBI and ACBAR) and two structure formation measurements (2dFGRS and Lyman $α$ forest) suggest a $Λ$CDM cosmological model with a running spectral power index of primordial density fluctuations. Motivated by this new result on the index of primordial power spectrum, we present the first study on the predicted lensing probabilities of image separation in a spatially flat $Λ$CDM model with a running spectral index (RSI-$Λ$CDM model). It is shown that the RSI-$Λ$CDM model suppress the predicted lensing probabilities on small splitting angles of less than about 4$^{''}$ compared with that of standard power-law $Λ$CDM (PL-$Λ$CDM) model.

The Mass Function of Dark Matter Haloes in a Cosmological Model with a Running Primordial Power Spectrum

We present the first study on the mass functions of Jenkins et al (J01) and an estimate of their corresponding largest virialized dark halos in the Universe for a variety of dark-energy cosmological models with a running spectral index. Compared with the PL-CDM model, the RSI-CDM model can raise the mass abundance of dark halos for small mass halos at lower redshifts, but it is not apparent on scales of massive mass halos. Particularly, this discrepancy increases largely with the decrease of redshift, and the RSI-CDM model can suppress the mass abundance on any scale of halo masses at higher redshift. As for the largest mass of virialized halos, the spatially flat $Λ$CDM models give more massive mass of virialized objects than other models for both of PL-CDM and RSI-CDM power spectral indexs, and the RSI-CDM model can enhance the mass of largest virialized halos for all of models considered in this paper. So we probably distinguish the PL-CDM and RSI-CDM models by the largest virialized halos in the future survey of cluster of galaxies.

Gravitational Lensing by Dark Matter Halos with Non-universal Density Profiles

The statistics of gravitational lensing can provide us with a very powerful probe of the mass distribution of matter in the universe. By comparing predicted strong lensing probabilities with observations, we can test the mass distribution of dark matter halos, in particular, the inner density slope. In this letter, unlike previous work that directly models the density profiles of dark matter halos semi-analytically, we generalize the density profiles of dark matter halos from high-resolution N-body simulations by means of generalized Navarro-Frenk-White (GNFW) models of three populations with slopes, $α$, of about -1.5, -1.3 and -1.1 for galaxies, groups and clusters, respectively. This approach is an alternative and independent way to examine the slopes of mass density profiles of halos. We present calculations of lensing probabilities using these GNFW profiles for three populations in various spatially flat cosmological models with a cosmological constant $Λ$. It is shown that the compound model of density profiles does not match well with the observed lensing probabilities derived from the Jodrell-Bank VLA Astrometric Survey data in combination with the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey data. Together with the previous work on lensing probability, our results suggest that a singular isothermal sphere mass model of less than about $10^{13}h^{-1}M_{\sun}$ can predict strong lensing probabilities that are consistent with observations of small splitting angles.

Optimal Weak Lensing Skewness Measurements

Weak lensing measurements are entering a precision era to statistically map the distribution of matter in the universe. The most common measurement has been of the variance of the projected surface density of matter, which corresponds to the induced correlation in alignments of background galaxies. This measurement of the fluctuations is insensitive to the total mass content, like using waves on the ocean to measure its depths. But when the depth is shallow as happens near a beach, waves become skewed. Similarly, a measurement of skewness in the projected matter distribution directly measures the total matter content of the universe. While skewness has already been convincingly detected, its constraint on cosmology is still weak. We address optimal analyses for the CFHT Legacy Survey in the presence of noise. We show that a compensated Gaussian filter with a width of 2.5 arc minutes optimizes the cosmological constraint, yielding $ΔΩ_m/Ω_m\sim 10%$. This is significantly better than other filters which have been considered in the literature. This can be further improved with tomography and other sophisticated analyses.

The largest virialized dark halo in the universe

Using semi-analytic approach, we present an estimate of the properties of the largest virialized dark halos in the present universe for three different scenarios of structure formation: SCDM, LCDM and OCDM models. The resulting virial mass and temperature increase from the lowest values of $1.6 \times 10^{15}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ and 9.8 keV in OCDM, the mid-range values of $9.0 \times 10^{15}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$ and 31 keV in LCDM, to the highest values of $20.9 \times 10^{15}h^{-1}M_{\odot}$, 65 keV in SCDM. As compared with the largest virialized object seen in the universe, the richest clusters of galaxies, we can safely rule out the OCDM model. In addition, the SCDM model is very unlikely because of the unreasonably high virial mass and temperature. Our computation favors the prevailing LCDM model in which superclusters may be marginally regarded as dynamically-virialized systems.

A comparison of central temperatures of the intracluster gas determined from X-ray and SZ measurements

A combination of the X-ray imaging and SZ measurements of clusters permits an indirect determination of the radial temperature profiles of intracluster gas, which requires no assumption about the dynamical properties and the equation of state for clusters. A comparison of such a derived gas temperature with that given by the X-ray spectral analysis constitutes an effective probe of properties of intracluster gas. Using the available data of 31 clusters in literature, we have performed the first comparison of the central gas temperatures provided by the two methods. The good agreement between these two independent temperature estimates suggests that the distribution of intracluster gas is essentially consistent with isothermality characterized by a mean polytropic index of gamma=0.9+-0.1.
