Towards probing for hypercomplex quantum mechanics in a waveguide interferometer

We experimentally investigate the suitability of a multi-path waveguide interferometer with mechanical shutters for performing a test for hypercomplex quantum mechanics. Probing the interferometer with coherent light we systematically analyse the influence of experimental imperfections that could lead to a false-positive test result. In particular, we analyse the effects of detector nonlinearity, input-power and phase fluctuations on different timescales, closed-state transmissivity of shutters and crosstalk between different interferometer paths. In our experiment, a seemingly small shutter transmissivity in the order of about $2 \times 10^{-4}$ is the main source of systematic error, which suggests that this is a key imperfection to monitor and mitigate in future experiments.

Radially Self-Accelerating Beams

We report on optical non-paraxial beams that exhibit a self-accelerating behavior in radial direction. Our theory shows that those beams are solutions to the full scalar Helmholtz equation and that they continuously evolve on spiraling trajectories. We provide a detailed insight into the theoretical origin of the beams and verify our findings on an experimental basis.

Controlling the Dynamics of Quantum Mechanical Systems Sustaining Dipole-Forbidden Transitions via Optical Nanoantennas

We suggest to excite dipole-forbidden transitions in quantum-mechanical systems by using appropriately designed optical nanoantennas. The antennas are tailored such that their near-field contains sufficiently strong contributions of higher-order multipole moments. The strengths of these moments exceed their free space analogs by several orders of magnitude. The impact of such excitation enhancement is exemplarily investigated by studying the dynamics of a three-level system. It decays upon excitation by an electric quadrupole transition via two electric dipole transitions. Since one dipole transition is assumed to be radiative, the enhancement of this emission serves as a figure of merit. Such self-consistent treatment of excitation, emission, and internal dynamics as developed in this contribution is the key to predict any observable quantity. The suggested scheme may represent a blueprint for future experiments and will find many obvious spectroscopic and sensing applications.

Plasmon enhanced upconversion luminescence near gold nanoparticles - Simulation and analysis of the interactions

We investigate plasmon resonances in gold nanoparticles to enhance the quantum yield of upconverting materials. For this purpose, we use a rate equation model that describes the upconversion of trivalent erbium based upconverters. Changes of the optical field acting on the upconverter and the changes to the transition probabilities of the upconverter in the proximity of a gold nanoparticle are calculated using Mie theory and exact electrodynamic theory respectively. With this data, the influence on the luminescence of the upconverter is determined using the rate equation model. The results show that upconversion luminescence can be increased in the proximity of a spherical gold nanoparticle due to the change in the optical field and the modification of the transition rates.

Unidirectional Invisibility induced by PT-Symmetric Periodic Structures

We show that parity-time (PT) symmetric Bragg periodic structures, near the spontaneous PT - symmetry breaking point, can act as unidirectional invisible media. In this regime, the re flection from one end is diminished while it is enhanced from the other. At the same time the transmission coefficient and phase, are indistinguishable from those expected in the absence of a grating. The phenomenon is robust even in the presence of Kerr non-linearities, and it can also effectively suppress optical bistabilities.
