Static magnetic order with strong quantum fluctuations in spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet Na2Co2TeO6

Kitaev interactions, arising from the interplay of frustration and bond anisotropy, can lead to strong quantum fluctuations and, in an ideal case, to a quantum-spin-liquid state. However, in many nonideal materials, spurious non-Kitaev interactions typically promote a zigzag antiferromagnetic order in the d-orbital transition metal compounds. By combining neutron scattering with muon-spin rotation and relaxation techniques, we provide new insights into the exotic properties of Na2Co2TeO6, a candidate Kitaev material. Below TN, the zero-field muon-spin relaxation rate becomes almost constant (at 0.45 us-1). We attribute this temperature-independent muon-spin relaxation rate to the strong quantum fluctuations, as well as to the frustrated Kitaev interactions. As the magnetic field increases, neutron scattering data indicate a much broader spin-wave-excitation gap at the K-point. Therefore, quantum fluctuations seem not only robust, but are even enhanced by the applied magnetic field. Our findings provide valuable hints for understanding the onset of the quantum-spin-liquid state in Kitaev materials.

Superconducting Properties of La$_2$(Cu$_{1-x}$Ni_x)$_5$As$_3$O$_2$: A $\rm μ$SR Study

We report the results of muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\rm μ$SR) measurements on the recently discovered layered Cu-based superconducting material La$_{2}($Cu$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{5}$As$_{3}$O$_{2}$ ($x =$ 0.40, 0.45). Transverse-field $\rm μ$SR experiments on both samples show that the temperature dependence of superfluid density is best described by a two-band model. The absolute values of zero-temperature magnetic penetration depth $λ_{\rm ab}(0)$ were found to be 427(1.7) nm and 422(1.5) nm for $x =$ 0.40 and 0.45, respectively. Both compounds are located between the unconventional and the standard BCS superconductors in the Uemura plot. No evidence of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking in the superconducting state is suggested by zero-field $\rm μ$SR measurements.

Superconductivity induced by gate-driven hydrogen intercalation in the charge-density-wave compound 1T-TiSe2

Hydrogen (H) plays a key role in the near-to-room temperature superconductivity of hydrides at megabar pressures. This suggests that H doping could have similar effects on the electronic and phononic spectra of materials at ambient pressure as well. Here, we demonstrate the non-volatile control of the electronic ground state of titanium diselenide (1T-TiSe$_2$) via ionic liquid gating-driven H intercalation. This protonation induces a superconducting phase, observed together with a charge-density wave through most of the phase diagram, with nearly doping-independent transition temperatures. The H-induced superconducting phase is possibly gapless-like and multi-band in nature, in contrast with those induced in TiSe$_2$ via copper, lithium, and electrostatic doping. This unique behavior is supported by ab initio calculations showing that high concentrations of H dopants induce a full reconstruction of the bandstructure, although with little coupling between electrons and high-frequency H phonons. Our findings provide a promising approach for engineering the ground state of transition metal dichalcogenides and other layered materials via gate-controlled protonation.

Emergence of superconductivity in single-crystalline LaFeAsO under simultaneous Sm and P substitution

We report on the high-pressure growth, structural characterization, and investigation of the electronic properties of single-crystalline LaFeAsO co-substituted by Sm and P, in both its normal- and superconducting states. Here, the appearance of superconductivity is attributed to the inner chemical pressure induced by the smaller-size isovalent substituents. X-ray structural refinements show that the partial substitution of La by Sm and As by P in the parent LaFeAsO compound leads to a contraction in both the conducting Fe2(As,P)2 layers and the interlayer spacing. The main parameters of the superconducting state, including the critical temperature, the lower- and upper critical fields, as well as the coherence length, the penetration depth, and their anisotropy, were determined from magnetometry measurements on a single-crystalline La0.87Sm0.13FeAs0.91P0.09O sample. The critical current density (jc), as resulting from loops of magnetization hysteresis in the self-generated magnetic field, is 2 x 106 A/cm2 at 2 K. Overall, our findings illustrate a rare and interesting case of how superconductivity can be induced by co-substitution in the 1111 family. Such approach delineates new possibilities in the creation of superconductors by design, thus stimulating the exploration of related systems under multi-chemical pressure conditions.

Gapless triangular-lattice spin-liquid candidate in PrZnAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic state in which electron spins are highly entangled, yet keep fluctuating even at zero temperature. Experimental realization of model QSLs has been challenging due to imperfections, such as antisite disorder, strain, and extra or a lack of interactions in real materials compared to the model Hamiltonian. Here we report the magnetic susceptibility, thermodynamic, inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and muon-spin relaxation studies on a polycrystalline sample of PrZnAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$, where the Pr$^{3+}$ ions form an ideal two-dimensional triangular lattice. Our results demonstrate that this system does not order nor freeze, but keep fluctuating down to 50 mK despite large antiferromagnetic couplings ($\sim$ -10 K). Furthermore, the INS and specific-heat data suggest that PrZnAl$_{11}$O$_{19}$ is best described as a gapless QSL.

Intrinsic new properties of a quantum spin liquid

Quantum fluctuations are expected to lead to highly entangled spin-liquid states in certain two-dimensional spin-1/2 compounds. We have synthesized and measured thermodynamic properties and muon spin relaxation rates in the copper-based two-dimensional triangular-lattice spin liquids Lu$_3$Cu$_2$Sb$_3$O$_{14}$ and Lu$_3$CuZnSb$_3$O$_{14}$. The former is the least disordered of this kind discovered to date. Magnetic entropy generation at high temperatures has been ruled out after carefully correcting for the lattice specific heat. Surprisingly, roughly half of the magnetic entropy is missing down to temperatures of O(10$^{-3}$) the exchange energy, independent of magnetic field up to $gμ_B H \gtrsim k_BΘ_W$, where $Θ_W$ is the Weiss temperature. The magnetic specific heat divided by temperature $C_M(T)/T$ and muon spin relaxation rate $λ(T)$ are both temperature-independent at low temperatures, followed by logarithmic decreases with increasing temperature. This behavior can be simply characterized by scale-invariant time-dependent fluctuations with a single parameter. Since no cooperative effects due to impurities are observed, the measured properties are intrinsic. They are evidence that in Lu$_3$Cu$_2$Sb$_3$O$_{14}$ massive quantum fluctuations lead to either a gigantic specific heat peak from singlet excitations at very low temperatures or, perhaps less likely, an extensively degenerate possibly topological singlet ground state.

Hydrogen-impurity induced unconventional magnetism in semiconducting molybdenum ditelluride

Layered transition-metal dichalcogenides are proposed as building blocks for van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures due to their graphene-like two dimensional structure. For this purpose, a magnetic semiconductor could represent an invaluable component for various spintronics and topotronics devices. Here, we combine different local magnetic probe spectroscopies with angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory calculations to show that 2H-MoTe2 is on the verge of becoming magnetic. Our results present clear evidence that the magnetism can be "switched on" by a hydrogen-like impurity. We also show that this magnetic state survives up to the free surface region, demonstrating the material's potential applicability as a magnetic component for thin-film heterostructures.

Microscopic evidence for anisotropic multigap superconductivity in the CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ kagome superconductor

The recently discovered kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ ($T_c \simeq 2.5$ K) has been found to host charge order as well as a non-trivial band topology, encompassing multiple Dirac points and probable surface states. Such a complex and phenomenologically rich system is, therefore, an ideal playground for observing unusual electronic phases. Here, we report on microscopic studies of its anisotropic superconducting properties by means of transverse-field muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiments. The temperature dependences of the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the magnetic penetration depth $λ_{ab}^{-2}(T)$ and $λ_{c}^{-2}(T)$ indicate that the superconducting order parameter exhibits a two-gap ($s+s$)-wave symmetry, reflecting the multiple Fermi surfaces of CsV3Sb5. The multiband nature of its superconductivity is further validated by the different temperature dependences of the anisotropic magnetic penetration depth $γ_λ(T)$ and upper critical field $γ_{\rm B_{c2}}(T)$, both in close analogy with the well known two-gap superconductor MgB$_2$. Remarkably, the high value of the $T_c/λ^{-2}(0)$ ratio in both field orientations strongly suggests the unconventional nature of superconductivity. The relaxation rates obtained from zero field $μ$SR experiments do not show noticeable change across the superconducting transition, indicating that superconductivity does not break time reversal symmetry.

Spin-triplet superconductivity in Weyl nodal-line semimetals

Topological semimetals are three dimensional materials with symmetry-protected massless bulk excitations. As a special case, Weyl nodal-line semimetals are realized in materials either having no inversion or broken time-reversal symmetry and feature bulk nodal lines. The 111-family of materials, LaNiSi, LaPtSi and LaPtGe (all lacking inversion symmetry), belong to this class. Here, by combining muon-spin rotation and relaxation with thermodynamic measurements, we find that these materials exhibit a fully-gapped superconducting ground state, while spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry at the superconducting transition. Since time-reversal symmetry is essential for protecting the normal-state topology, its breaking upon entering the superconducting state should remarkably result in a topological phase transition. By developing a minimal model for the normal-state band structure and assuming a purely spin-triplet pairing, we show that the superconducting properties across the family can be described accurately. Our results demonstrate that the 111-family reported here provides an ideal test-bed for investigating the rich interplay between the exotic properties of Weyl nodal-line fermions and unconventional superconductivity.

Studies on Novel Yb-based Candidate Triangular Quantum Antiferromagnets: Ba3YbB3O9 and Ba3YbB9O18

Yb-based triangular magnets have recently attracted attention as promising candidates to explore frustrated quantum magnetism. However, some candidates have turned out to have significant amounts of site disorder, which significantly affects the low-temperature magnetic behavior. To overcome this issue, Yb-based frustrated systems without structural disorder are required. In this paper, we report physical properties of two Yb-based triangular magnets Ba3YbB3O9 and Ba3YbB9O18, without structural disorder. Via magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and muon spin rotation measurements, we verified that both Ba3YbB3O9 and, particularly studied for the first time, Ba3YbB9O18 do not show long range magnetic order or glass-like spin freezing down to 0.28 K, but show typical paramagnetic behavior.

Giant spontaneous Hall effect in a nonmagnetic Weyl-Kondo semimetal

Nontrivial topology in condensed matter systems enriches quantum states of matter, to go beyond either the classification into metals and insulators in terms of conventional band theory or that of symmetry broken phases by Landau's order parameter framework. So far, focus has been on weakly interacting systems, and little is known about the limit of strong electron correlations. Heavy fermion systems are a highly versatile platform to explore this regime. Here we report the discovery of a giant spontaneous Hall effect in the Kondo semimetal Ce3Bi4Pd3 that is noncentrosymmetric but preserves time reversal symmetry. We attribute this finding to Weyl nodes - singularities of the Berry curvature - that emerge in the immediate vicinity of the Fermi level due to the Kondo interaction. We stress that this phenomenon is distinct from the previously detected anomalous Hall effect in materials with broken time reversal symmetry; instead, it manifests an extreme topological response that requires a beyond-perturbation-theory description of the previously proposed nonlinear Hall effect. The large magnitude of the effect in even tiny electric and zero magnetic fields, as well as its robust bulk nature may aid the exploitation in topological quantum devices.

Penetration depth and gap structure in the antiperovskite oxide superconductor Sr$_{3-x}$SnO revealed by $μ$SR

We report a $μ$SR study on the antiperovskite oxide superconductor Sr$_{3-x}$SnO. With transverse-field $μ$SR, we observed the increase of the muon relaxation rate upon cooling below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}=5.4$ K, evidencing bulk superconductivity. The exponential temperature dependence of the relaxation rate $σ$ at low temperatures suggests a fully gapped superconducting state. We evaluated the zero-temperature penetration depth $λ(0)\propto1/\sqrt{σ(0)}$ to be around 320-1020 nm. Such a large value is consistent with the picture of a doped Dirac semimetal. Moreover, we revealed that the ratio $T_{\mathrm{c}}/λ(0)^{-2}$ is larger than those of ordinary superconductors and is comparable to those of unconventional superconductors. The relatively high $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ for small carrier density may hint at an unconventional pairing mechanism beyond the ordinary phonon-mediated pairing. In addition, zero-field $μ$SR did not provide evidence of broken time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. These features are consistent with the theoretically proposed topological superconducting state in Sr$_{3-x}$SnO, as well as with $s$-wave superconductivity.

Growth of bulk single-crystal MnP helimagnet and its structural and NMR characterization

Bulk single crystals of manganese phosphide (MnP) were grown from melt at 1 GPa and 1200 C by using a cubic-anvil, high-pressure, and high-temperature technique. The obtained black colored crystals exhibit a plate-like morphology, with flat surfaces and maximum dimensions up to 4 x 2 x 0.5 mm3. The orthorhombic crystal structure was confirmed by X-ray diffraction [Pnma, 62, Z = 4, a = 5.2510(4) Å, b = 3.1670(3) Å, c = 5.90098 (4) Å and V = 98.279(14) Å3]. Temperature-dependent magnetization measurements reveal the occurrence of two successive transitions: a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at Tc = 290.5 K and the development of a double helimagnetic order at Ts = 44.5 K. Zero-field 31P NMR measurements in the FM and in the screw-spin AFM state show prominent features, which are compared with previous experimental data and theoretical calculations. The relatively large crystals obtained here open up new possibilities for further explorations of this interesting material.
