Stability analysis of 5D gravitational solutions with N bulk scalar fields

We study the stability of 5D gravitational solutions containing an arbitrary number of scalar fields. A closed set of equations is derived which governs the background and perturbations of N scalar fields and the metric, for arbitrary bulk and boundary scalar potentials. In particular the effect of the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar fields on the geometry is fully taken into account, together with all the perturbations of the system. The equations are explicitly written as an eigenvalue problem, which can be readily solved to determine the stability of the system and obtain the properties of the fluctuations, such as masses and couplings. As an example, we study a dynamical soft-wall model with two bulk scalar fields used to model the hadron spectrum of QCD and the Higgs sector of electroweak physics. It is shown that there are no tachyonic modes, and that there is a (radion) mode whose mass is suppressed by a large logarithm compared to that of the other Kaluza-Klein modes.

A natural little hierarchy for RS from accidental SUSY

We use supersymmetry to address the little hierarchy problem in Randall-Sundrum models by naturally generating a hierarchy between the IR scale and the electroweak scale. Supersymmetry is broken on the UV brane which triggers the stabilization of the warped extra dimension at an IR scale of order 10 TeV. The Higgs and top quark live near the IR brane whereas light fermion generations are localized towards the UV brane. Supersymmetry breaking causes the first two sparticle generations to decouple, thereby avoiding the supersymmetric flavour and CP problems, while an accidental R-symmetry protects the gaugino mass. The resulting low-energy sparticle spectrum consists of stops, gauginos and Higgsinos which are sufficient to stabilize the little hierarchy between the IR scale and the electroweak scale. Finally, the supersymmetric little hierarchy problem is ameliorated by introducing a singlet Higgs field on the IR brane.

Fermion Masses in Emergent Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

We consider the generation of fermion masses in an emergent model of electroweak symmetry breaking with composite $W,Z$ gauge bosons. A universal bulk fermion profile in a warped extra dimension is used for all fermion flavors. Electroweak symmetry is broken at the UV (or Planck) scale where boundary mass terms are added to generate the fermion flavor structure. This leads to flavor-dependent nonuniversality in the gauge couplings. The effects are suppressed for the light fermion generations but are enhanced for the top quark where the $Zt{\bar t}$ and $Wt{\bar b}$ couplings can deviate at the $10-20%$ level in the minimal setup. By the AdS/CFT correspondence our model implies that electroweak symmetry is not a fundamental gauge symmetry. Instead the Standard Model with massive fermions and $W,Z$ gauge bosons is an effective chiral Lagrangian for some underlying confining strong dynamics at the TeV scale, where mass is generated without a Higgs mechanism.

A slice of AdS_5 as the large N limit of Seiberg duality

A slice of AdS_5 is used to provide a 5D gravitational description of 4D strongly-coupled Seiberg dual gauge theories. An (electric) SU(N) gauge theory in the conformal window at large N is described by the 5D bulk, while its weakly coupled (magnetic) dual is confined to the IR brane. This framework can be used to construct an N = 1 MSSM on the IR brane, reminiscent of the original Randall-Sundrum model. In addition, we use our framework to study strongly-coupled scenarios of supersymmetry breaking mediated by gauge forces. This leads to a unified scenario that connects the extra-ordinary gauge mediation limit to the gaugino mediation limit in warped space.

TASI Lectures on a Holographic View of Beyond the Standard Model Physics

We provide an introduction to the physics of a warped extra dimension and the AdS/CFT correspondence. An AdS/CFT dictionary is given which leads to a 4D holographic view of the 5th dimension. With a particular emphasis on beyond the standard model physics, this provides a window into the strong dynamics associated with either electroweak symmetry breaking or supersymmetry breaking. In this way hierarchies associated with either the electroweak or supersymmetry breaking scale, together with the fermion mass spectrum, can be addressed in a consistent framework.

A Warped Model of Dark Matter

We present a model of dark matter in a warped extra dimension in which the dark sector mass scales are naturally generated without supersymmetry. The dark force, responsible for dark matter annihilating predominantly into leptons, is mediated by dark photons that naturally obtain a mass in the GeV range via a dilaton coupling. As well as solving the gauge hierarchy problem, our model predicts dark matter in the TeV range, including naturally tiny mass splittings between pseudo-Dirac states. By the AdS/CFT correspondence both the dark photon and dark matter are interpreted as composite states of the strongly-coupled dual 4d theory. Thus, in our model the dark sector emerges at the TeV scale from the dynamics of a new strong force.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking in a Soft-Wall Model of AdS/QCD

We incorporate chiral symmetry breaking in a soft-wall version of the AdS/QCD model by using a modified dilaton profile and a quartic term in the bulk scalar potential. This allows one to separate the dependence on spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking. The resulting mass spectra in the scalar, vector and axial-vector sectors compares favorably with the respective QCD resonances.

Fermion Flavor in Soft-Wall AdS

The formalism for modeling multiple fermion generations in a warped extra dimension with a soft-wall is presented. A bulk Higgs condensate is responsible for generating mass for the zero-mode fermions but leads to additional complexity from large mixing between different flavors. We extend existing single-generation analyses by considering new special cases in which analytical solutions can be derived and discuss flavor constraints. The general three-generation case is then treated using a simple numerical routine. Assuming anarchic 5D parameters we find a fermion mass spectrum resembling the standard model quarks and leptons with highly degenerate couplings to Kaluza-Klein gauge bosons. This confirms that the soft-wall model has similar attractive features as that found in hard-wall models, providing a framework to generalize existing phenomenological analyses.

Emergent Electroweak Symmetry Breaking with Composite W, Z Bosons

We present a model of electroweak symmetry breaking in a warped extra dimension where electroweak symmetry is broken at the UV (or Planck) scale. An underlying conformal symmetry is broken at the IR (or TeV) scale generating masses for the electroweak gauge bosons without invoking a Higgs mechanism. By the AdS/CFT correspondence the W,Z bosons are identified as composite states of a strongly-coupled gauge theory, suggesting that electroweak symmetry breaking is an emergent phenomenon at the IR scale. The model satisfies electroweak precision tests with reasonable fits to the S and T parameter. In particular the T parameter is sufficiently suppressed since the model naturally admits a custodial SU(2) symmetry. The composite nature of the W,Z-bosons provide a novel possibility of unitarizing WW scattering via form factor suppression. Constraints from LEP and the Tevatron as well as discovery opportunities at the LHC are discussed for these composite electroweak gauge bosons.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Soft-Wall AdS/QCD

We show how to incorporate chiral symmetry breaking in the soft-wall version of the AdS/QCD model by using a modified dilaton profile and a quartic term in the bulk scalar potential. This allows one to separate the dependence on spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking. Moreover our 5D model automatically incorporates linear trajectories and non chiral-symmetry restoration for highly excited radial states. We compare our resulting mass spectra in the scalar, vector and axial-vector sectors with the respective QCD resonances and find reasonable agreement using the known values for the pion mass and decay constant.

The Soft-Wall Standard Model

We explore the possibility of modeling electroweak physics in a warped extra dimension with a soft wall. The infrared boundary is replaced with a smoothly varying dilaton field that provides a dynamical spacetime cutoff. We analyze gravity, gauge fields, and fermions in the soft-wall background and obtain a discrete spectrum of Kaluza-Klein states which can exhibit linear Regge-like behavior. Bulk Yukawa interactions give rise to nonconstant fermion mass terms, leading to fermion localization in the soft-wall background and a possible explanation of the Standard Model flavor structure. Furthermore we construct electroweak models with custodial symmetry, where the gauge symmetry is broken with a bulk Higgs condensate. The electroweak constraints are not as stringent as in hard-wall models, allowing Kaluza-Klein masses of order the TeV scale.

Dynamical Soft-Wall AdS/QCD

We present a solution of the five-dimensional gravity-dilaton-tachyon equations of motion with a pure AdS_5 metric and a quadratic dilaton and linear tachyon in conformal coordinates. This leads to an infrared soft wall model where the dilaton profile gives rise to linear Regge trajectories for the four-dimensional mass spectrum of the dual gauge theory. Even though our approach is phenomenological the scalar fields resemble the dilaton and the closed string tachyon of a non-critical string theory. Interestingly, the linear tachyon has the correct profile to imply that chiral symmetry is not restored for highly excited states. Our solution thus provides a dynamical bottom-up model of linear confinement in holographic QCD.

Warped Phenomenology in the Holographic Basis

The holographic basis is a novel tool which allows for a quantitative description of elementary/composite mixing in holographic duals of warped models. We apply this tool to bulk fermions in a slice of AdS_5 and determine the precise admixture of elementary source field and composite resonances forming the Standard Model fermions. In particular, for the phenomenologically important case of an IR localized right-handed top quark, we show that the massless eigenstate is approximately a 50/50 elementary-composite admixture. We also translate, in a simple yet quantitative manner, several of the phenomenological successes enjoyed by warped models to the language of partial compositeness.

Warped Leptogenesis with Dirac Neutrino Masses

We show how leptogenesis can occur at the TeV scale with neutrinos that possess almost purely Dirac masses and negligible Majorana mass contributions as a consequence of the small wavefunction overlap in a warped fifth dimension. Lepton number violation at the Planck scale is introduced via a Majorana mass term on the Planck brane. Such a Majorana mass operator leads to the small mass splitting of otherwise degenerate Kaluza-Klein excited states on the TeV brane. This tiny mass splitting can compensate for the small Yukawa couplings to give a CP asymmetry large enough to produce the sufficient baryon asymmetry from the decay of the nearly degenerate neutrino Kaluza-Klein states. In this way the standard baryogenesis via leptogenesis scenario can naturally occur at the TeV scale without the need for a high mass scale.

Holographic Mixing Quantified

We compute the precise elementary/composite field content of mass eigenstates in holographic duals of warped models in a slice of AdS_5. This is accomplished by decomposing the bulk fields not in the usual Kaluza-Klein basis, but rather into a holographic basis of 4D fields, corresponding to purely elementary source or CFT composite fields. Generically, this decomposition yields kinetic and mass mixing between the elementary and composite sectors of the holographic theory. Depending on where the bulk zero mode is localized, the elementary/composite content may differ radically, which we show explicitly for several examples including the bulk Randall-Sundrum graviton, bulk gauge boson, and Higgs boson.

A Gravity Dual and LHC Study of Single-Sector Supersymmetry Breaking

We propose a gravitational dual of ``single-sector'' models of supersymmetry breaking which contain no messenger sector and naturally explain the scale of supersymmetry breaking and the fermion mass hierarchy. In five dimensions these models can be given a simple interpretation. Inspired by flux-background solutions of type IIB supergravity, a metric background that deviates from AdS_5 in the IR breaks supersymmetry, while the fermion mass hierarchy results from the wavefunction overlap of bulk fermions with a UV-confined Higgs field. The first and second generation squarks and sleptons, which are localized near the IR brane, directly feel the supersymmetry breaking and obtain masses of order 10 TeV. These are interpreted as composite states of the dual 4D theory. The gauginos and third generation squarks and sleptons are elementary states that obtain soft masses of order 1 TeV at the loop level via direct gauge mediation. This particle spectrum leads to distinctive signatures at the LHC, similar to the usual gauge mediation with a neutralino NLSP that decays promptly to a gravitino LSP, but with lower event rates. Nevertheless we show that with 1-10 fb^{-1} of LHC data "single-sector" models can easily be detected above background and distinguished from conventional gravity and gauge mediation.

Yang-Mills Localization in Warped Space

We present a mechanism to localize zero mode non-Abelian gauge fields in a slice of AdS_5. As in the U(1) case, bulk and boundary mass terms allow for a massless mode with an exponential profile that can be localized anywhere in the bulk. However in the non-Abelian extension, the cubic and quartic zero mode gauge couplings do not match, implying a loss of 4D gauge invariance. We show that the symmetry can be restored at the nonlinear level by considering brane-localized interactions, which are added in a gauge invariant way using boundary kinetic terms. Possible issues related to the scalar sector of the theory, such as strong coupling and ghosts, are also discussed. Our approach is then compared with other localization mechanisms motivated by dilaton gravity and deconstruction. Finally, we show how to localize the scalar component A_5 zero mode anywhere in the bulk which could be relevant in gauge-Higgs unification models.

Bulk fields in AdS_5 from probe D7 branes

We relate bulk fields in Randall-Sundrum AdS_5 phenomenological models to the world-volume fields of probe D7 branes in the Klebanov-Witten background of type IIB string theory. The string constructions are described by AdS_5 X T^{1,1} in their near-horizon geometry, with T^{1,1} a 5d compact internal manifold that yields N=1 supersymmetry in the dual 4d gauge theory. The effective 5d Lagrangian description derived from the explicit string construction leads to additional features that are not usually encountered in phenomenological model building.
