Birational Invariants from Hodge Structures and Quantum Multiplication

We introduce new invariants of smooth complex projective varieties, called Hodge atoms. Their construction combines rational Gromov-Witten invariants with classical Hodge theory and relies on the notion of an F-bundle, which is a non-archimedean version of a non-commutative Hodge structure. The Hodge atoms arise from the spectral decomposition of the F-bundle under the Euler vector field action, and behave additively under blowups, in accordance with Iritani's blowup theorem. We compute several examples and demonstrate applications to birational geometry. In particular, we prove that a very general cubic fourfold is not rational. We also obtain a new proof of the equality of Hodge numbers of birational Calabi-Yau manifolds in any dimension. Furthermore, we show that the framework naturally extends to representations of other motivic Galois groups. This enables the theory of atoms to produce new obstructions to rationality over non-algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero as well.

Chern-Simons theory, decomposition, and the A model

In this paper, we discuss how gauging one-form symmetries in Chern-Simons theories is implemented in an A-twisted topological open string theory. For example, the contribution from a fixed H/Z bundle on a three-manifold M, arising in a BZ gauging of H Chern-Simons, for Z a finite subgroup of the center of H, is described by an open string worldsheet theory whose bulk is a sigma model with target a Z-gerbe (a bundle of one-form symmetries) over T^* M, of characteristic class determined by the H/Z bundle. We give a worldsheet picture of the decomposition of one-form-symmetry-gauged Chern-Simons in three dimensinos, and we describe how a target-space constraint on bundles arising in the gauged Chern-Simons theory has a natural worldsheet realization. Our proposal provides examples of the expected correspondence between worldsheet global higher-form symmetries, and target-space gauged higher-form symmetries.

Twistor Hecke eigensheaves in genus 2

Following the strategy outlined in [DP09] arXiv:math/0604617 and [DP22] arXiv:math/0604617 for bundles of rank 2 on a smooth projective curve of genus $2$, we construct flat connections over the moduli of stable bundles, with singularities along the wobbly locus. We verify that the associated $D$-modules are Hecke eigensheaves. The local systems are constructed by the nonabelian Hodge correspondence from Higgs bundles. The spectral varieties of the Higgs bundles are the Hitchin fibers corresponding to the Hecke eigenvalues.

Moduli stacks of Higgs bundles on stable curves

In this article, we construct a flat degeneration of the derived moduli stack of Higgs bundles on smooth curves using the stack of expanded degenerations of Jun Li. We show that there is an intrinsic relative log-symplectic form on the degeneration and we compare it with the one constructed by the second author. We show that the Hitchin map of the degeneration we construct has complete fibers. Furthermore, we show that the Hitchin map is flat and that a suitable open subset of the smooth locus of the reduced nilpotent cone is Lagrangian. We also extend the construction of the moduli of Higgs bundles along with the relative log-symplectic form over the universal moduli stack of stable curves.

Parabolic Hecke eigensheaves

We study the Geometric Langlands Conjecture (GLC) for rank two flat bundles on the projective line $C$ with tame ramification at five points $\{p_{1}, p_{2}, p_{3}, p_{4}, p_{5} \}$. In particular we construct the automorphic $D$-modules predicted by GLC on the moduli space of rank two parabolic bundles on $(C, \{p_{1}, p_{2}, p_{3}, p_{4}, p_{5} \})$. The construction uses non-abelian Hodge theory and a Fourier-Mukai transform along the fibers of the Hitchin fibration to reduce the problem to one in classical projective geometry on the intersection of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^{4}$.

Moduli of flat connections on smooth varieties

We study the moduli functor of flat bundles on smooth, possibly non-proper, algebraic variety $X$ (over a field of characteristic zero). For this we introduce the notion of \emph{formal boundary} of $X$, denoted by $\partial X$, which is a formal analogue of the boundary at infinity of the Betti topological space associated to $X$. We explain how to construct two derived moduli functors $Vect^{\nabla}(X)$ and $Vect^{\nabla}(\partial X)$, of flat bundles on $X$ and on $\partial X$, as well as a restriction map $R : Vect^{\nabla}(X) \rightarrow Vect^\nabla(\partial X)$ from the former to the later. This work contains two main results. First we prove that the morphism R comes equipped with a canonical shifted Lagrangian structure in the sense of [PTVV]. This first result can be understood as the de Rham analogue of the existence of Poisson structures on moduli of local systems previously studied by the authors. As a second statement, we prove that the geometric fibers of $R$ are representable by "quasi-algebraic spaces", a slight weakening of the notion of algebraic spaces.

Poisson geometry of the moduli of local systems on smooth varieties

We study the moduli of G-local systems on smooth but not necessarily proper complex algebraic varieties. We show that, when suitably considered as derived algebraic stacks, they carry natural Poisson structures, generalizing the well known case of curves. We also construct symplectic leaves of this Poisson structure by fixing local monodromies at infinity, and show that a new feature, called strictness, appears as soon as the divisor at infinity has non-trivial crossings.

Landau-Ginzburg models for certain fiber products with curves

In this paper we describe a physical realization of a family of non-compact Kahler threefolds with trivial canonical bundle in hybrid Landau-Ginzburg models, motivated by some recent non-Kahler solutions of Strominger systems, and utilizing some recent ideas from GLSMs. We consider threefolds given as fiber products of compact genus g Riemann surfaces and noncompact threefolds. Each genus g Riemann surface is constructed using recent GLSM tricks, as a double cover of P^1 branched over a degree 2g + 2 locus, realized via nonperturbative effects rather than as the critical locus of a superpotential. We focus in particular on special cases corresponding to a set of Kahler twistor spaces of certain hyperKahler four-manifolds, specifically the twistor spaces of R^4, C^2/Z_k, and S^1 x R^3. We check in all cases that the condition for trivial canonical bundle arising physically matches the mathematical constraint.

Twisted spectral correspondence and torus knots

Cohomological invariants of twisted wild character varieties as constructed by Boalch and Yamakawa are derived from enumerative Calabi-Yau geometry and refined Chern-Simons invariants of torus knots. Generalizing the untwisted case, the present approach is based on a spectral correspondence for meromorphic Higgs bundles with fixed conjugacy classes at the marked points. This construction is carried out for twisted wild character varieties associated to (l, kl-1) torus knots, providing a colored generalization of existing results of Hausel, Mereb and Wong as well as Shende, Treumann and Zaslow.

BPS states, torus links and wild character varieties

A string theoretic framework is constructed relating the cohomology of wild character varieties to refined stable pair theory and torus link invariants. Explicit conjectural formulas are derived for wild character varieties with a unique irregular point on the projective line. For this case the string theoretic construction leads to a conjectural colored generalization of existing results of Hausel, Mereb and Wong as well as Shende, Treumann and Zaslow.

Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov theorems for Landau-Ginzburg models

In this paper we prove the smoothness of the moduli space of Landau-Ginzburg models. We formulate and prove a Tian-Todorov theorem for the deformations of Landau-Ginzburg models, develop the necessary Hodge theory for varieties with potentials, and prove a double degeneration statement needed for the unobstructedness result. We discuss the various definitions of Hodge numbers for non-commutative Hodge structures of Landau-Ginzburg type and the role they play in mirror symmetry. We also interpret the resulting families of de Rham complexes attacted to a potential in terms of mirror symmetry for one parameter families of symplectic Fano manifolds and argue that modulo a natural triviality property the moduli spaces of Landau-Ginzburg models posses canonical special coordinates.

Parabolic refined invariants and Macdonald polynomials

A string theoretic derivation is given for the conjecture of Hausel, Letellier, and Rodriguez-Villegas on the cohomology of character varieties with marked points. Their formula is identified with a refined BPS expansion in the stable pair theory of a local root stack, generalizing previous work of the first two authors in collaboration with G. Pan. Haiman's geometric construction for Macdonald polynomials is shown to emerge naturally in this context via geometric engineering. In particular this yields a new conjectural relation between Macdonald polynomials and refined local orbifold curve counting invariants. The string theoretic approach also leads to a new spectral cover construction for parabolic Higgs bundles in terms of holomorphic symplectic orbifolds.

A Global SU(5) F-theory model with Wilson line breaking

We engineer compact SU(5) Grand Unified Theories in F-theory in which GUT-breaking is achieved by a discrete Wilson line. Because the internal gauge field is flat, these models avoid the high scale threshold corrections associated with hypercharge flux. Along the way, we exemplify the `local-to-global' approach in F-theory model building and demonstrate how the Tate divisor formalism can be used to address several challenges of extending local models to global ones. These include in particular the construction of G-fluxes that extend non-inherited bundles and the engineering of U(1) symmetries. We go beyond chirality computations and determine the precise (charged) massless spectrum, finding exactly three families of quarks and leptons but excessive doublet and/or triplet pairs in the Higgs sector (depending on the example) and vector-like exotics descending from the adjoint of SU(5)_{GUT}. Understanding why vector-like pairs persist in the Higgs sector without an obvious symmetry to protect them may shed light on new solutions to the mu problem in F-theory GUTs.

Langlands duality for Hitchin systems

We show that the Hitchin integrable system for a simple complex Lie group $G$ is dual to the Hitchin system for the Langlands dual group $\lan{G}$. In particular, the general fiber of the connected component $\Higgs_0$ of the Hitchin system for $G$ is an abelian variety which is dual to the corresponding fiber of the connected component of the Hitchin system for $\lan{G}$. The non-neutral connected components $\Higgs_α$ form torsors over $\Higgs_0$. We show that their duals are gerbes over $\Higgs_0$ which are induced by the gerbe of $G$-Higgs bundles $\gHiggs$. More generally, we establish a duality between the gerbe $\gHiggs$ of $G$-Higgs bundles and the gerbe $\lan{\gHiggs}$ of $\lan{G}$-Higgs bundles, which incorporates all the previous dualities. All these results extend immediately to an arbirtary connected complex reductive group $\mathbb{G}$.

Hitchin's Equations and M-Theory Phenomenology

Phenomenological compactifications of M-theory involve 7-manifolds with G_2 holonomy and various singularities. Here we study local geometries with such singularities, by thinking of them as compactifications of 7d supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a three-manifold Q_3. We give a general discussion of compactifications of 7d Yang-Mills theory in terms of Higgs bundles on Q_3. We show they can be constructed using spectral covers, which are Lagrangian branes with a flat connection in the cotangent bundle T^*Q_3. We explain the dictionary with ALE fibrations over Q_3 and conjecture that these configurations have G_2 holonomy. We further develop tools to study the low energy effective theory of such a model. We show that the naive massless spectrum is corrected by instanton effects. Taking the instanton effects into account, we find that the massless spectrum and many of the interactions can be computed with Morse theoretic methods.

Intermediate Jacobians and ADE Hitchin Systems

Let $Σ$ be a smooth projective complex curve and $\mathfrak{g}$ a simple Lie algebra of type ${\sf ADE}$ with associated adjoint group $G$. For a fixed pair $(Σ, \mathfrak{g})$, we construct a family of quasi-projective Calabi-Yau threefolds parameterized by the base of the Hitchin integrable system associated to $(Σ,\mathfrak{g})$. Our main result establishes an isomorphism between the Calabi-Yau integrable system, whose fibers are the intermediate Jacobians of this family of Calabi-Yau threefolds, and the Hitchin system for $G$, whose fibers are Prym varieties of the corresponding spectral covers. This construction provides a geometric framework for Dijkgraaf-Vafa transitions of type ${\sf ADE}$. In particular, it predicts an interesting connection between adjoint ${\sf ADE}$ Hitchin systems and quantization of holomorphic branes on Calabi-Yau manifolds.

The Exact MSSM Spectrum from String Theory

We show the existence of realistic vacua in string theory whose observable sector has exactly the matter content of the MSSM. This is achieved by compactifying the E_8 x E_8 heterotic superstring on a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold with an SU(4) gauge instanton and a Z_3 x Z_3 Wilson line. Specifically, the observable sector is N=1 supersymmetric with gauge group SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y x U(1)_{B-L}, three families of quarks and leptons, each family with a right-handed neutrino, and one Higgs-Higgs conjugate pair. Importantly, there are no extra vector-like pairs and no exotic matter in the zero mode spectrum. There are, in addition, 6 geometric moduli and 13 gauge instanton moduli in the observable sector. The holomorphic SU(4) vector bundle of the observable sector is slope-stable.
