Master equation approach to the conjugate pairing rule of Lyapunov spectra for many-particle thermostatted systems

The master equation approach to Lyapunov spectra for many-particle systems is applied to non-equilibrium thermostatted systems to discuss the conjugate pairing rule. We consider iso-kinetic thermostatted systems with a shear flow sustained by an external restriction, in which particle interactions are expressed as a Gaussian white randomness. Positive Lyapunov exponents are calculated by using the Fokker-Planck equation to describe the tangent vector dynamics. We introduce another Fokker-Planck equation to describe the time-reversed tangent vector dynamics, which allows us to calculate the negative Lyapunov exponents. Using the Lyapunov exponents provided by these two Fokker-Planck equations we show the conjugate pairing rule is satisfied for thermostatted systems with a shear flow in the thermodynamic limit. We also give an explicit form to connect the Lyapunov exponents with the time-correlation of the interaction matrix in a thermostatted system with a color field.

Lyapunov spectra of periodic orbits for a many-particle system

The Lyapunov spectrum corresponding to a periodic orbit for a two dimensional many particle system with hard core interactions is discussed. Noting that the matrix to describe the tangent space dynamics has the block cyclic structure, the calculation of the Lyapunov spectrum is attributed to the eigenvalue problem of a 16x16 reduced matrices regardless of the number of particles. We show that there is the thermodynamic limit of the Lyapunov spectrum in this periodic orbit. The Lyapunov spectrum has a step structure, which is explained by using symmetries of the reduced matrices.

Stepwise structure of Lyapunov spectra for many particle systems by a random matrix dynamics

The structure of Lyapunov spectra for many particle systems with a random interaction between the particles is discussed. The dynamics of the tangent space is expressed as a master equation, which leads to a formula that connects the positive Lyapunov exponents and the time correlations of the particle interaction matrix. Applying this formula to one and two dimensional models we investigate the stepwise structure of the Lyapunov spectra, which appear in the region of small positive Lyapunov exponents. Long range interactions lead to a clear separation of the Lyapunov spectra into a part exhibiting stepwise structure and a part changing smoothly. The part of the Lyapunov spectrum containing the stepwise structure is clearly distinguished by a wave like structure in the eigenstates of the particle interaction matrix. The two dimensional model has the same step widths as found numerically in a deterministic chaotic system of many hard disks.

Conductance and density of states as the Kramers-Kronig dispersion relation

By applying the Kramers-Kronig dispersion relation to the transmission amplitude a direct connection of the conductance with the density of states is given in quantum scattering systems connected to two one-channel leads. Using this method we show that in the Fano resonance the peak position of the density of states is generally different from the position of the corresponding conductance peak, whereas in the Breit-Wigner resonance those peak positions coincide. The lineshapes of the density of states are well described by a Lorentz type in the both resonances. These results are verified by another approach using a specific form of the scattering matrix to describe scattering resonances.

Charge Current Density from the Scattering Matrix

A method to derive the charge current density and its quantum mechanical correlation from the scattering matrix is discussed for quantum scattering systems described by a time-dependent Hamiltonian operator. The current density and charge density are expressed with the help of functional derivatives with respect to the vector potential and the electric potential. A condition imposed by the requirement that these local quantities are gauge invariant is considered. Our formulas lead to a direct relation between the local density of states and the total current density at a given energy. To illustrate the results we consider, as an example, a chiral ladder model.

Friedel phases and phases of transmission amplitudes in quantum scattering systems

We illustrate the relation between the scattering phase appearing in the Friedel sum rule and the phase of the transmission amplitude for quantum scatterers connected to two one-dimensional leads. Transmission zero points cause abrupt phase changes $\pmπ$ of the phase of the transmission amplitude. In contrast the Friedel phase is a continuous function of energy. We investigate these scattering phases for simple scattering problems and illustrate the behavior of these models by following the path of the transmission amplitude in the complex plane as a function of energy. We verify the Friedel sum rule for these models by direct calculation of the scattering phases and by direct calculation of the density of states.

Quantum Scattering Theoretical Description of Thermodynamical Transport Phenomena

We give a method of describing thermodynamical transport phenomena, based on a quantum scattering theoretical approach. We consider a quantum system of particles connected to thermodynamical reservoirs by leads. The effects of the reservoirs are imposed as an asymptotic condition at the end of the leads. We derive an expression for a current of a conserved quantity, which is independent of the details of the Hamiltonian operator. The Landauer formula and its generalizations are derived from this method.
