4D Track Reconstruction on Free-Streaming Data at PANDA at FAIR

A new generation of experiments is being developed, where the challenge of separating rare signal processes from background at high intensities requires a change of trigger paradigm. At the future PANDA experiment at FAIR, hardware triggers will be abandoned and instead a purely software-based system will be used. This requires novel reconstruction methods with the ability to process data from many events simultaneously. A 4D tracking algorithm based on the cellular automaton has been developed which will utilize the timing information from detector signals. Simulation studies have been performed to test its performance on the foreseen free-streaming data from the PANDA detector. For this purpose, a quality assurance procedure for tracking on free-streaming data was implemented in the PANDA software. The studies show that at higher interaction rates, 4D tracking performs better than the 3D algorithm in terms of efficiency, 84% compared to 77%. The fake track suppression is also greatly improved, compared to the 3D tracking with roughly a 50% decrease in the ghost rate.

Vacuum Predictions and Measurements for an Internal Pellet Target

Measurements with low Z targets at internal experiments typically imply a gas load which deteriorates the ring vacuum. Future experiments need reliable estimates for the expected vacuum conditions in order to design 4-pi detectors closely surrounding the interaction area. We present a method for the calculation of the resulting vacuum of such a complex system using a Pellet Target. In order to test the method, a vacuum system with diagnostic tools has been set up and a Pellet Target was operated under realistic conditions. The results for the absolute vacuum agree within factors of two with the expected pressures.

String model description of polarisation and angular distributions in pbar p -> Lambdabar Lambda at low energies

The observed polarisation of Lambda hyperons from the inclusive pA -> Lambda X reaction at high energies has previously been well described within the Lund string model through polarised ss quark pair production in the string breaking hadronisation process. This model is here applied to the exclusive pbar p -> Lambdabar Lambda reaction at low energies and compared to available data sets down to an incident beam momentum of 1.835 GeV/c. This required an extension of the diquark scattering model to involve three components: an isotropic part relevant close to threshold, a spectator part and a forward scattering part as in pA -> Lambda X at high energies. The observed angular distributions are then reproduced and, for momentum transfers above |t'| = 0.2 GeV^2, agreement with the measured polarisation is also obtained.
