A posteriori error bounds for pseudo-parabolic equations using $C_0$ semigroups

A class of pseudo-parabolic partial differential equations is considered. We derive a posteriori error bounds for approximations obtained by FEMs in space and a BDF formula in time. The analysis is based on the $C_0$ semigroup theory and an adaptation of the concept of elliptic reconstruction to pseudo-parabolic problems. The analysis is complemented with numerical experiments.

Tensor finite elements for smectic liquid crystals

We present a tensor-based finite element scheme for a smectic-A liquid crystal model. We propose a simple C\'ea-type finite element projection in the linear case and prove its quasi-optimal convergence. Special emphasis is put on the formulation and treatment of appropriate boundary conditions. For the nonlinear case we present a formulation in two space dimensions and prove the existence of a solution. We propose a discretization that extends the linear case in Uzawa-fashion to the nonlinear case by an additional Poisson solver. Numerical results illustrate the performance and convergence of our schemes.

Maximum-norm a posteriori error bounds for parabolic equations discretised by the extrapolated Euler method in time and FEM in space

A class of linear parabolic equations is considered. We derive a framework for the a posteriori error analysis of time discretisations by Richardson extrapolation of arbitrary order combined with finite element discretisations in space. We use the idea of elliptic reconstructions and certain bounds for the Green's function of the parabolic operator. The crucial point in the analysis is the design of suitable polynomial reconstructions in time from approximations that are given only in the mesh points.

Balanced norm estimates for $rp$-Finite Element Methods applied to singularly perturbed fourth order boundary value problems

We establish robust exponential convergence for $rp$-Finite Element Methods (FEMs) applied to fourth order singularly perturbed boundary value problems, in a \emph{balanced norm} which is stronger than the usual energy norm associated with the problem. As a corollary, we get robust exponential convergence in the maximum norm. $r p$ FEMs are simply $p$ FEMs with possible repositioning of the (fixed number of) nodes. This is done for a $C^1$ Galerkin FEM in 1-D, and a $C^0$ mixed FEM in 2-D over domains with smooth boundary. In both cases we utilize the \emph{Spectral Boundary Layer} mesh.

Maximum-norm a posteriori error bounds for an extrapolated upwind scheme applied to a singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem

Richardson extrapolation is applied to a simple first-order upwind difference scheme for the approximation of solutions of singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problems in one dimension. Robust a posteriori error bounds are derived for the proposed method on arbitrary meshes. It is shown that the resulting error estimator can be used to stear an adaptive mesh algorithm that generates meshes resolving layers and singularities. Numerical results are presented that illustrate the theoretical findings.

A balanced finite-element method for an axisymmetrically loaded thin shell

We analyse a finite-element discretisation of a differential equation describing an axisymmetrically loaded thin shell. The problem is singularly perturbed when the thickness of the shell becomes small. We prove robust convergence of the method in a balanced norm that captures the layers present in the solution. Numerical results confirm our findings.

A unified approach to maximum-norm a posteriori error estimation for second-order time discretisations of parabolic equations

A class of linear parabolic equations are considered. We derive a common framework for the a posteriori error analysis of certain second-order time discretisations combined with finite element discretisations in space. In particular we study the Crank-Nicolson method, the extrapolated Euler method, the backward differentiation formula of order 2 (BDF-2), the Lobatto IIIC method and a two-stage SDIRK method. We use the idea of elliptic reconstructions and certain bounds for the Green's function of the parabolic operator.

An $hp$ Weak Galerkin FEM for singularly perturbed problems

We present the analysis for an $hp$ weak Galerkin-FEM for singularly perturbed reaction-convection-diffusion problems in one-dimension. Under the analyticity of the data assumption, we establish robust exponential convergence, when the error is measured in the energy norm, as the degree $p$ of the approximating polynomials is increased. The Spectral Boundary Layer mesh is used, which is the minimal (layer adapted) mesh for such problems. Numerical examples illustrating the theory are also presented.
