Proof of new S-matrix formula from classical solutions in open string field theory (or, Deriving on-shell open string field amplitudes without using Feynman rules, Part II)

We study relation between the gauge invariant quantity obtained in [arXiv:1908.09784] and the Feynman diagrams in the dressed $ \mathcal B_0 $ gauge in the open cubic string field theory. We derive a set of recurrence relations that hold among the terms of this gauge invariant quantity. By using these relations, we prove that this gauge invariant quantity equals the $S$-matrix at the tree level. We also present a proof that a set of new Feynman rules proposed in [arXiv:2003.05021 [hep-th]] reproduces the onshell disc amplitudes correctly by using the same combinatorial identities.

Perturbative path-integral of string field and the $A_{\infty }$ structure of the BV master equation

The perturbative path-integral gives a morphism of the (quantum) $A_{\infty }$ structure intrinsic to each quantum field theory, which we show explicitly on the basis of the homological perturbation. As is known, in the BV formalism, any effective action also solves the BV master equation, which implies that the path-integral can be understood as a morphism of the BV differential. Since each solution of the BV master equation is in one-to-one correspondence with a (quantum) $A_{\infty }$ structure, the path-integral preserves this intrinsic $A_{\infty }$ structure of quantum field theory, where $A_{\infty }$ reduces to $L_{\infty }$ whenever multiplications of space-time fields are graded commutative. We apply these ideas to string field theory and (re-)derive some quantities based on the perturbative path-integral, such as effective theories with finite $\alpha ^{\prime }$, reduction of gauge and unphysical degrees, $S$-matrix and gauge invariant observables.

Deriving on-shell open string field amplitudes without using Feynman rules

We present a series of new gauge invariant quantities in Witten's open string field theory. They are defined for a given set of open string states which satisfy the physical state condition around a classical solution. For known classical solutions, we show that these gauge invariant quantities compute on shell tree-level scattering amplitudes around the correspondent D-brane configuration.

Vector profile and gauge invariant observables of string field theory solutions for constant magnetic field background

We study profiles and gauge invariant observables of classical solutions corresponding to a constant magnetic field on a torus in open string field theory. We numerically find that the profile is not discontinuous on the torus, although the solution describes topologically nontrivial configurations in the context of low energy effective theory. From the gauge invariant observables, we show that the solution provide correct couplings of closed strings to a D-brane with constant magnetic field.

Rolling Near the Tachyon Vacuum

In a linear dilaton background, it has been argued that an unstable D-brane can decay to the tachyon vacuum without leaving behind a remnant of tachyon matter. Here we address the question of how the D-brane can decay to the tachyon vacuum when the tachyon vacuum does not support physical fluctuations. Using the formalism of open string field theory, we find that the tachyon vacuum {\it can} support fluctuations provided they are "hidden" as nonperturbative effects behind a pure gauge asymptotic series.

Topological defects in open string field theory

We show how conformal field theory topological defects can relate solutions of open string field theory for different boundary conditions. To this end we generalize the results of Graham and Watts to include the action of defects on boundary condition changing fields. Special care is devoted to the general case when nontrivial multiplicities arise upon defect action. Surprisingly the fusion algebra of defects is realized on open string fields only up to a (star algebra) isomorphism.

Open String Fields as Matrices

We show that the action expanded around Erler-Maccaferri's N D-brane solution describes the N+1 D-brane system where one D-brane disappears due to tachyon condensation. String fields on multi-branes can be regarded as block matrices of a string field on a single D-brane in the same way as matrix theories.

Observables for identity-based tachyon vacuum solutions

We consider a modified KBc algebra in bosonic open string field theory expanded around identity-based scalar solutions. By use of the algebra, classical solutions on the background are constructed and observables for them, including energy densities and gauge invariant overlaps, are calculable. These results are applied to evaluate observables analytically for both of the identity-based trivial pure gauge solution and the identity-based tachyon vacuum solution.

Comments on new multiple-brane solutions based on Hata-Kojita duality in open string field theory

Recently, Hata and Kojita proposed a new energy formula for a class of solutions in Witten's open string field theory based on a novel symmetry of correlation functions they found. Their energy formula can be regarded as a generalization of the conventional energy formula by Murata and Schnabl. Following their proposal, we investigate their new ansatz for the classical solution representing double D-branes. We present a regularized definition of this solution and show that the solution satisfies the equation of motion when it is contracted with the solution itself and when it is contracted with any states in the Fock space. However, the Ellwood invariant and the boundary state of the solution are the same as those for the perturbative vacuum. This result disagrees with an expectation from the Ellwood conjecture.

On the classical solution for the double-brane background in open string field theory

Murata and Schnabl recently proposed solutions for the multiple-brane backgrounds in Witten's open bosonic string field theory. The solutions contain some singularities, and in one particular regularization, the double-brane solution reproduces the desired energy and the Ellwood invariant, which is conjectured to represent coupling to a closed string. However, it turned out that the equation of motion is slightly violated. In this paper, we propose another regularization method for the double-brane solution. The regularized solution is realized as a superposition of the wedge states with operator insertions. It respects the equation of motion both contracted with the solution itself and with the states in the Fock space. It reproduces the desired double-brane tension, while the expected Ellwood invariant is not obtained.

Gauge-invariant observables and marginal deformations in open string field theory

The level-truncation analysis of open string field theory for a class of periodic marginal deformations indicates that a branch of solutions in Siegel gauge exists only for a finite range of values of the marginal field. The periodicity in the deformation parameter is thus obscure. We use the relation between gauge-invariant observables and the closed string tadpole on a disk conjectured by Ellwood to construct a map between the deformation parameter of the boundary conformal field theory and the parameter labeling classical solutions of open string field theory. We evaluate the gauge-invariant observables for the numerical solutions in Siegel gauge up to level 12 and find that our results qualitatively agree with the analysis by Sen using the energy-momentum tensor and are consistent with the picture that the finite range of the branch covers one fundamental domain of the periodic moduli space.

Constraints on a class of classical solutions in open string field theory

We calculate boundary states for general string fields in the KBc subalgebra under some regularity conditions based on the construction by Kiermaier, Okawa, and Zwiebach. The resulting boundary states are always proportional to that for the perturbative vacuum |B>. In this framework, the equation of motion implies that boundary states are independent of the auxiliary parameter s associated with the length of the boundary. By requiring the s-independence, we show that the boundary states for classical solutions in our class are restricted to \pm|B> and 0. In particular, there exist no string fields which reproduce boundary states for multiple D-brane backgrounds. While we know that the boundary states |B> and 0 are reproduced by solutions for the perturbative vacuum and the tachyon vacuum, respectively, no solutions reproducing -|B> have been constructed. In this paper we also propose a candidate for such a solution, which may describe the ghost D-brane.
