Suzaku observations of outskirts of nearby clusters and groups: I. electron density and gas fraction to the virial radius

We present an analysis of Suzaku observations of 14 nearby galaxy clusters and groups (z < 0.06), extending radial coverage out to the virial radius (approximately r200). The sample spans a wide mass range, from M500 about 2x10^13 to 7x10^14 solar masses, and includes well-studied systems such as Coma, Perseus, and Virgo. We carefully modeled all background components, including the soft X-ray foregrounds (the Local Hot Bubble, Milky Way Halo, and super-virial temperature components), the cosmic X-ray background, and the non-X-ray background, and assessed their effects on the derived properties of the intracluster medium (ICM). We constructed radial profiles of emission measure, electron density, and temperature. Temperatures decrease smoothly with radius, typically dropping to about one-third to half of their peak values near r200. For relaxed clusters, the emission measure profiles outside the core regions are well described by a beta model with beta around 0.6-0.7, while groups show slightly flatter slopes of beta around 0.4-0.65. Beyond r2500, electron density profiles follow a power-law decline with a slope close to 2. At r500 and r200, the electron density and the gas mass fraction show a tight correlation with the system mass, except for three clusters with bright subclusters. In massive clusters, the gas fraction increases with radius and approaches the cosmic baryon fraction near r200. In contrast, lower-mass systems exhibit gas fractions of around 0.1 at r200. The observed mass dependence of gas fractions suggests that feedback and related processes play an increasingly important role toward the group scale, shaping the connection between baryons and dark matter halos.

M4: Multi-generator, Multi-domain, and Multi-lingual Black-Box Machine-Generated Text Detection

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capability to generate fluent responses to a wide variety of user queries. However, this has also raised concerns about the potential misuse of such texts in journalism, education, and academia. In this study, we strive to create automated systems that can detect machine-generated texts and pinpoint potential misuse. We first introduce a large-scale benchmark \textbf{M4}, which is a multi-generator, multi-domain, and multi-lingual corpus for machine-generated text detection. Through an extensive empirical study of this dataset, we show that it is challenging for detectors to generalize well on instances from unseen domains or LLMs. In such cases, detectors tend to misclassify machine-generated text as human-written. These results show that the problem is far from solved and that there is a lot of room for improvement. We believe that our dataset will enable future research towards more robust approaches to this pressing societal problem. The dataset is available at https://github.com/mbzuai-nlp/M4.

Multiwavelength study of X-ray Luminous Clusters in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program S16A field

We present a joint X-ray, optical and weak-lensing analysis for X-ray luminous galaxy clusters selected from the MCXC (Meta-Catalog of X-Ray Detected Clusters of Galaxies) cluster catalog in the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) survey field with S16A data, As a pilot study of our planned series papers, we measure hydrostatic equilibrium (H.E.) masses using XMM-Newton data for four clusters in the current coverage area out of a sample of 22 MCXC clusters. We additionally analyze a non-MCXC cluster associated with one MCXC cluster. We show that H.E. masses for the MCXC clusters are correlated with cluster richness from the CAMIRA catalog (Oguri et al. 2017), while that for the non-MCXC cluster deviates from the scaling relation. The mass normalization of the relationship between the cluster richness and H.E. mass is compatible with one inferred by matching CAMIRA cluster abundance with a theoretical halo mass function. The mean gas mass fraction based on H.E. masses for the MCXC clusters is $\langle f_{\rm gas} \rangle = 0.125\pm0.012$ at spherical overdensity $Δ=500$, which is $\sim80-90$ percent of the cosmic mean baryon fraction, $Ω_b/Ω_m$, measured by cosmic microwave background experiments. We find that the mean baryon fraction estimated from X-ray and HSC-SSP optical data is comparable to $Ω_b/Ω_m$. A weak-lensing shear catalog of background galaxies, combined with photometric redshifts, is currently available only for three clusters in our sample. Hydrostatic equilibrium masses roughly agree with weak-lensing masses, albeit with large uncertainty. This study demonstrates that further multiwavelength study for a large sample of clusters using X-ray, HSC-SSP optical and weak lensing data will enable us to understand cluster physics and utilize cluster-based cosmology.

X-Ray observations of a subhalo associated with the NGC 4839 group infalling toward the Coma cluster

We report $Suzaku$ X-ray observations of the dark subhalo associated with the merging group of NGC 4839 in the Coma cluster. The X-ray image exhibits an elongated tail toward the southwest. The X-ray peak shifts approximately $1'$ away from the weak-lensing mass center toward the opposite direction of the Coma cluster center. We investigated the temperature, normalization, pressure, and entropy distributions around the subhalo. Excluding the X-ray tail, the temperature beyond the truncation radius is 8-10$~\rm keV$, which is two times higher than that of the subhalo and the X-ray tail. The pressure is nearly uniform excluding southern part of the subhalo at two times of the truncation radius. We computed the gas mass within the truncation radius and the X-ray tail. While the gas fraction within the truncation radius is about 5 times smaller than that of regular groups, the gas mass in the subhalo and the X-ray tail to weak-lensing mass ratio is consistent with that of regular groups. Assuming the infall velocity, $2000~\rm km~s^{-1}$, the ram pressure is 1.4 times greater than gravitational force per unit area. Assuming the Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities, the total lost mass is approximately $3\times10^{11}~M_{\odot}$. If this gas had originally been within the truncation radius, the gas mass fraction of the subhalo would have been comparable with those of regular groups before infalling to the Coma cluster.

Testing a generalized cubic Galileon gravity model with the Coma Cluster

We obtain a constraint on the parameters of a generalized cubic Galileon gravity model exhibiting the Vainshtein mechanism by using multi-wavelength observations of the Coma Cluster. The generalized cubic Galileon model is characterized by three parameters of the turning scale associated with the Vainshtein mechanism, and the amplitude of modifying a gravitational potential and a lensing potential. X-ray and Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) observations of the intra-cluster medium are sensitive to the gravitational potential, while the weak-lensing (WL) measurement is specified by the lensing potential. A joint fit of a complementary multi-wavelength dataset of X-ray, SZ and WL measurements enables us to simultaneously constrain these three parameters of the generalized cubic Galileon model for the first time. We also find a degeneracy between the cluster mass parameters and the gravitational modification parameters, which is influential in the limit of the weak screening of the fifth force.

Suzaku observations of subhalos in the Coma cluster

We observed three massive subhalos in the Coma cluster with {\it Suzaku}. These subhalos, labeled "ID 1", "ID 2", and "ID 32", were detected with a weak-lensing survey using the Subaru/Suprime-Cam (Okabe et al. 2014a), and are located at the projected distances of 1.4 $r_{500}$, 1.2 $r_{500}$, and 1.6 $r_{500}$ from the center of the Coma cluster, respectively. The subhalo "ID 1" has a compact X-ray excess emission close to the center of the weak-lensing mass contour, and the gas mass to weak-lensing mass ratio is about 0.001. The temperature of the emission is about 3 keV, which is slightly lower than that of the surrounding intracluster medium (ICM) and that expected for the temperature vs. mass relation of clusters of galaxies. The subhalo "ID 32" shows an excess emission whose peak is shifted toward the opposite direction from the center of the Coma cluster. The gas mass to weak-lensing mass ratio is also about 0.001, which is significantly smaller than regular galaxy groups. The temperature of the excess is about 0.5 keV and significantly lower than that of the surrounding ICM and far from the temperature vs. mass relation of clusters. However, there is no significant excess X-ray emission in the "ID 2" subhalo. Assuming an infall velocity of about 2000 $\rm km~s^{-1}$, at the border of the excess X-ray emission, the ram pressures for "ID 1" and "ID 32" are comparable to the gravitational restoring force per area. We also studied the effect of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability to strip the gas. Although we found X-ray clumps associated with the weak-lensing subhalos, their X-ray luminosities are much lower than the total ICM luminosity in the cluster outskirts.

Metal distributions out to 0.5 r180 in the intracluster medium of four galaxy groups observed with Suzaku

We studied the distributions of metal abundances and metal-mass-to-light ratios in the intracluster medium (ICM) of four galaxy groups, MKW 4, HCG 62, the NGC 1550 group, and the NGC 5044 group, out to 0.5 r180 observed with Suzaku. The Fe abundance decreases with radius, and about 0.2-0.4 solar beyond 0.1 r180. At a given radius in units of r180, the Fe abundance in the ICM of the four galaxy groups were consistent or smaller than those of clusters of galaxies. The Mg/Fe and Si/Fe ratios in the ICM are nearly constant at the solar ratio out to 0.5 r180. We also studied systematic uncertainties in the derived metal abundances comparing the results from two versions of atomic data for astrophysicists (ATOMDB) and single- and two temperature model fits. Since the metals have been synthesized in galaxies, we collected K-band luminosities of galaxies from Two Micron All Sky Survey catalogue (2MASS) and calculated the integrated iron-mass-to-light-ratios (IMLR), or the ratios of the iron mass in the ICM to light from stars in galaxies. The groups with smaller gas mass to light ratios have smaller IMLR values and the IMLR inversely correlated with the entropy excess. Based on these abundance features, we discussed the past history of metal enrichment process in groups of galaxies.

Suzaku observations of the Hydra A cluster out to the virial radius

We report Suzaku observations of the northern half of the Hydra A cluster out to ~1.4 Mpc, reaching the virial radius. This is the first Suzaku observations of a medium-size (kT ~3 keV) cluster out to the virial radius. Two observations were conducted, north-west and north-east offsets, which continue in a filament direction and a void direction of the large-scale structure of the Universe, respectively. The X-ray emission and distribution of galaxies elongate in the filament direction. The temperature profiles in the two directions are mostly consistent with each other within the error bars and drop to 1.5 keV at 1.5 r_500. As observed by Suzaku in hot clusters, the entropy profile becomes flatter beyond r_500, in disagreement with the r^1.1 relationship that is expected from accretion shock heating models. When scaled with the average intracluster medium (ICM) temperature, the entropy profiles of clusters observed with Suzaku are universal and do not depend on system mass. The hydrostatic mass values in the void and filament directions are in good agreement, and the Navarro, Frenk, and White universal mass profile represents the hydrostatic mass distribution up to ~ 2 r_500. Beyond r_500, the ratio of gas mass to hydrostatic mass exceeds the result of the Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe, and at r_100, these ratios in the filament and void directions reach 0.4 and 0.3, respectively. We discuss possible deviations from hydrostatic equilibrium at cluster outskirts. We derived radial profiles of the gasmass- to-light ratio and iron-mass-to-light ratio out to the virial radius. Within r_500, the iron-mass-to-light ratio of the Hydra A cluster was compared with those in other clusters observed with Suzaku.

$O(-2)$ Blow-up Formula via Instanton Calculus on $\hat{C^2/Z_2}$ and Weil Conjecture

We calculate Betti numbers of the framed moduli space of instantons on $\hat{{\bf C}^2/{\bf Z}_2}$, under the assumption that the corresponding torsion free sheaves $E$ have vanishing properties ($Hom(E,E(-l_\infty))=Ext^2(E,E(-l_\infty))=0$). Moreover we derive the generating function of Betti numbers and obtain closed formulas. On the other hand, we derive a universal relation between the generating function of Betti numbers of the moduli spaces of stable sheaves on $X$ with an $A_1$-singularity and that on $\hat{X}$ blow-uped at the singularity, by using Weil conjecture. We call this the $O(-2)$ blow-up formula. Applying this to $X={\bf C}^2/{\bf Z}_2$ case, we reproduce the formula given by instanton calculus.

Affine Lie Algebras and S-Duality of N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory for ADE Gauge Groups on K3

We attempt to determine the partition function of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory for $ADE$ gauge groups on $K3$ and investigate the relation with affine Lie algebras. In particular we describe eta functions, which compose SU(N) partition function, by level $N$ $A_{N-1}$ theta functions. Moreover we find $D,E$ theta functions, which satisfy the Montonen-Olive duality for $D,E$ partition functions.

Hecke Operator and S-Duality of N=4 Super Yang-Mills for ADE Gauge Group on K3

We determine the partition functions of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills gauge theory for some $ADE$ gauge groups on $K3$, under the assumption that they are holomorphic. Our partition functions satisfy the gap condition and Montonen-Olive duality at the same time, like the SU(N) partition functions of Vafa and Witten. As a result we find a close relation between Hecke operator and $S$-duality of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills for $ADE$ gauge group on $K3$.

An Approach to ${\cal N}=4$ ADE Gauge Theory on K3

We propose a recipe for determination of the partition function of ${\cal N}=4$ $ADE$ gauge theory on $K3$ by generalizing our previous results of the SU(N) case. The resulting partition function satisfies Montonen-Olive duality for $ADE $ gauge group.

{\cal N}=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory on Orbifold-$T^4/{\bf Z}_2$: Higher Rank Case

We derive the partition function of {\cal N}=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on orbifold-T^4/{\bf Z}_2 for gauge group SU(N). We generalize the method of our previous work for the SU(2) case to the SU(N) case. The resulting partition function is represented as the sum of the product of Göttche formula of singular quotient space $T^4/{\bf Z}_2 $ and of blow-up formulas including A_{N-1} theta series with level N.

N=4 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory on Orbifold-$T^4/{\bf Z}_2$

We derive the partition function of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on orbifold-$T^4/{\bf Z}_2$. In classical geometry, K3 surface is constructed from the orbifold-$T^4/{\bf Z}_2$. Along the same way as the orbifold construction, we construct the partition function of K3 surface from orbifold-$T^4/{\bf Z}_2$. The partition function is given by the product of the contribution of the untwisted sector of $T^4/{\bf Z}_2$, and that of the twisted sector of $T^4/{\bf Z}_2$ i.e., ${\cal O}(-2)$ curve blow-up formula.

Euler number of Instanton Moduli space and Seiberg-Witten invariants

We show that a partition function of topological twisted N=4 Yang-Mills theory is given by Seiberg-Witten invariants on a Riemannian four manifolds under the condition that the sum of Euler number and signature of the four manifolds vanish. The partition function is the sum of Euler number of instanton moduli space when it is possible to apply the vanishing theorem. And we get a relation of Euler number labeled by the instanton number $k$ with Seiberg-Witten invariants, too. All calculation in this paper is done without assuming duality.

Seiberg-Witten Theory of Rank Two Gauge Groups and Hypergeometric Series

In SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory, it is known that the dual pair of fields are expressed by hypergeometric functions. As for the theory with SU(3) gauge symmetry without matters, it was shown that the dual pairs of fields can be expressed by means of the Appell function of type F_4. These expressions are convenient for analyzing analytic properties of fields. We investigate the relation between Seiberg-Witten theory of rank two gauge group without matters and hypergeometric series of two variables. It is shown that the relation between gauge theories and Appell functions can be observed for other classical gauge groups of rank two. For B_2 and C_2, the fields are written in terms of Appell functions of type H_5. For D_2, we can express fields by Appell functions of type F_4 which can be decomposed to two hypergeometric functions, corresponding to the fact SO(4)\sim SU(2)\times SU(2). We also consider the integrable curve of type C_2 and show how the fields are expressed by Appell functions. However in the case of exceptional group G_2, our examination shows that they can be represented by hypergeometric series which does not correspond to the Appell functions.
