SU(9) grand unified model with rank-reducing discrete boundary conditions on $T^2/\mathbb Z_4$

We study a six-dimensional SU(9) grand unified model with rank-reducing discrete boundary conditions and continuous Wilson line phases on the orbifold $T^2/\mathbb Z_4$. We show that the model can realize grand unification of the Standard Model gauge interactions and electroweak symmetry breaking via the Hosotani mechanism. The model has several attractive features. Two Higgs doublets arise as zero modes of the extra-dimensional components of the gauge field, and the leptons and quarks in each generation are separately embedded into two bulk multiplets, in the ${\bf 36}$ and ${\bf 84}$ representations of SU(9), respectively, without exotic matter. Furthermore, proton decay processes mediated by the gauge bosons in the bulk are absent, because the leptons and quarks belong to different bulk multiplets.

Models with rank-reducing discrete boundary conditions on $T^2/{\mathbb Z}_4$

We study six-dimensional $SU(n)$ gauge models with rank-reducing discrete boundary conditions on the orbifold $T^2/{\mathbb Z}_4$, without and with continuous Wilson line phases. For the latter case, we find that a minimal model can describe the breakdown of the electroweak symmetry based on an $SU(6)$ gauge group. This model possesses excellent features that two Higgs doublets come from the zero modes of the extra-dimensional gauge field, and the quarks in each generation can be unified into one multiplet, without exotic quarks, as the zero modes of a bulk field in the $\boldsymbol{15}$ representation of $SU(6)$. There exists a vacuum where the electroweak symmetry is slightly broken by the Hosotani mechanism, with the addition of suitable bulk fields. %adding suitable bulk fields, and Interestingly, quadratic divergences are not reintroduced into the Higgs masses from the tadpole terms of the field strength localized on fixed points, not only at one-loop level but also at higher orders.

On representation matrices of boundary conditions in $SU(n)$ gauge theories compactified on two-dimensional orbifolds

We study the existence of diagonal representatives in each equivalence class of representation matrices of boundary conditions in $SU(n)$ or $U(n)$ gauge theories compactified on the orbifolds $T^2/{\mathbb Z}_N$ ($N = 2, 3, 4, 6$). We suppose that the theory has a global $G' = U(n)$ symmetry. Using constraints, unitary transformations and gauge transformations, we examine whether the representation matrices can simultaneously become diagonal or not. We show that at least one diagonal representative necessarily exists in each equivalence class on $T^2/{\mathbb Z}_2$ and $T^2/{\mathbb Z}_3$, but the representation matrices on $T^2/{\mathbb Z}_4$ and $T^2/{\mathbb Z}_6$ can contain not only diagonal matrices but also non-diagonal $2 \times 2$ ones and non-diagonal $3 \times 3$ and $2 \times 2$ ones, respectively, as members of block-diagonal submatrices. These non-diagonal matrices have discrete parameters, which means that the rank-reducing symmetry breaking can be caused by the discrete Wilson line phases.

Long-lived Higgsino pairs decaying within the LHC detectors

Pair-produced long-lived lightest Higgsinos decaying within a few meters in the LHC detectors are considered. The relatively light nearly-pure Higgsino states object of this study are those of a supersymmetric minimal model with gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking and heavy sfermions and gauginos. The heavier Higgsinos decay instantly into the lightest one, with very little activities. Hence, all pair-produced Higgsinos end up as a pair of the lightest neutral Higgsinos, possibly long lived and decaying into the gravitino and either the Higgs or the Z boson. If they decay inside the detectors, these bosons deposit huge energies in the calorimeters. The cross section $σ_2$ ($σ_1$) for the events with two (at least one) decaying-in-flight lightest Higgsinos is examined. The combination $(σ_1)^2/σ_2$ is found to be almost insensitive to the lightest Higgsino lifetime, thereby providing a good variable to measure its mass. The ratio $σ_1/σ_2$, instead, mildly dependent on its mass, can give good information on its lifetime. It is argued that the lightest Higgsinos in the events are rather slow, as the very relativistic ones escape away. Thus, the initial state radiations tend to be soft and a trigger system appropriate for such events is necessary to detect them.

Grand Gauge-Higgs Unification on $T^2/{\mathbb Z}_3$ via Diagonal Embedding Method

We study a novel six-dimensional gauge theory compactified on the $T^2/{\mathbb Z}_3$ orbifold utilizing the diagonal embedding method. The bulk gauge group is $G\times G\times G$, and the diagonal part $G^{\rm diag}$ remains manifest in the effective four-dimensional theory. Further spontaneous breaking of the gauge symmetry occurs through the dynamics of the zero modes of the extra-dimensional components of the gauge field. We apply this setup to the $SU(5)$ grand unified theory and examine the vacuum structure determined by the dynamics of the zero modes. The phenomenologically viable models are shown, in which the unified symmetry $G^{\rm diag}\cong SU(5)$ is spontaneously broken down to $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ at the global minima of the one-loop effective potential for the zero modes. This spontaneous breaking provides notable features such as a realization of the doublet-triplet splitting without fine tuning and a prediction of light adjoint fields.

Dirac gaugino from grand gauge-Higgs unification

We show that models of the Dirac gaugino can naturally be embedded into a kind of the grand unified theory (GUT), the grand gauge-Higgs unification (gGHU) model, with the gauge group SU(5)\times SU(5)/Z_2 on an S^1/Z_2 orbifold. The supersymmetric gGHU is known to posess a light chiral adjoint supermultiplet after the GUT breaking, thank to the exchange symmetry of two SU(5) groups. Identifying the `predicted' adjoint fermion with the Dirac partner of the gaugino, we argue that the supersoft term, responsible for the Dirac gaugino mass, can be obtained from the supersymmetric Chern-Simons (CS) like term in the gGHU setup. Although the latter term does not respect the exchange symmetry, we propose a novel way to introduce its breaking effect within a consistent orbifold construction. We also give a concrete setup of fermion field contents (bulk and boundary-localized fermions) that induce the requisite CS-like term, and calculate its coefficient from the bulk profile of chiral fermion zero modes. Our gGHU setup may be regarded as an extra-dimensional realization of the Goldstone gaugino scenario that was proposed before as a solution to the problem of the adjoint scalar masses.

Charged Lepton Mass Relations in a SUSY Scenario

The observed charged lepton masses satisfy the relations $K \equiv (m_e +m_μ+m_τ)/(\sqrt{m_e} +\sqrt{m_μ} +\sqrt{m_τ})^2 =2/3$ and $κ\equiv \sqrt{m_e m_μm_τ}/(\sqrt{m_e} +\sqrt{m_μ} +\sqrt{m_τ})^3 =1/486$ with great accuracy. These parameters are given as $K=( {\rm Tr}[ΦΦ])/ ({\rm Tr}[Φ])^2$ and $κ= {\rm det} Φ/({\rm Tr}[Φ])^3$ if the charged lepton masses $m_{ei}$ are given by $m_{ei} \propto \sum_k Φ_i^{\ k} Φ_k^{\ i}$ where $Φ$ is a U(3)-family nonet scalar. Simple scalar potential forms to realize the relations have been already proposed in non-supersymmetric scenarios, but the potential forms are not stable against the renormalization group effects. In this paper, we examine supersymmetric scenarios and find that the parameters $K$ and $κ$ are made stable against the effects in a very nontrivial way, even though the superpotential itself (in the canonical basis) suffers the usual corrections. We also show possible simple superpotential forms for the relations.

The Standard Model Gauge Symmetry from Higher-Rank Unified Groups in Grand Gauge-Higgs Unification Models

We study grand unified models in the five-dimensional space-time where the extra dimension is compactified on $S^1/Z_2$. The spontaneous breaking of unified gauge symmetries is achieved via vacuum expectation values of the extra-dimensional components of gauge fields. We derive one-loop effective potentials for the zero modes of the gauge fields in SU(7), SU(8), SO(10), and $E_6$ models. In each model, the rank of the residual gauge symmetry that respects the boundary condition imposed at the orbifold fixed points is higher than that of the standard model. We verify that the residual symmetry is broken to the standard model gauge symmetry at the global minima of the effective potential for certain sets of bulk fermion fields in each model.

Gauge Symmetry Breaking Patterns in an SU(5) Grand Gauge-Higgs Unification

We study gauge symmetry breaking patterns of the five-dimensional $SU(5)$ grand gauge-Higgs unification compactified on an orbifold $S^1/{\mathbb Z}_2$ with the Hosotani mechanism in the framework of the diagonal embedding method. We find matter contents that lead to the $SU(3)\times SU(2)\times U(1)$ gauge symmetry on the global minimum of the effective potential and also present examples of matter content for which each regular subgroup of $SU(5)$ is realized as vacuum configuration. The finite temperature phase transitions for the models with the gauge symmetry of the standard model at zero temperature and also for supersymmetric models are studied. We show in a certain model with supersymmetry that the vacuum of the standard model selected dynamically before the inflation continues to stay there up to the present.

Higgs as a Probe of Supersymmetric Grand Unification with the Hosotani Mechanism

The supersymmetric grand unified theory where the SU(5) gauge symmetry is broken by the Hosotani mechanism predicts the existence of adjoint chiral superfields whose masses are at the supersymmetry breaking scale. The Higgs sector is extended with the SU(2)_L triplet with hypercharge zero and neutral singlet chiral multiplets from that in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Since the triplet and singlet chiral multiplets originate from a higher-dimensional vector multiplet, this model is highly predictive. Properties of the particles in the Higgs sector are characteristic and can be different from those in the Standard Model and other models. We evaluate deviations in coupling constants of the standard model-like Higgs boson and the mass spectrum of the additional Higgs bosons. We find that our model is discriminative from the others by precision measurements of these coupling constants and masses of the additional Higgs bosons. This model can be a good example of grand unification that is testable at future collider experiments such as the luminosity up-graded Large Hadron Collider and future electron-positron colliders.

$μ$ term and supersymmetry breaking from six dimensional theory

We propose a new next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM) which is on a six-dimensional spacetime compactified on a $T^2/Z_3$ orbifold. In this model, three gauge singlet fields $N, S_1$ and $S_2$ in addition to the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) fields are introduced. These fields are localized at some fixed points except for the singlet $N$ and the gauge fields. The $μ$ parameter is provided from the vacuum expectation value (vev) of $N$. The $F$ terms get vevs simultaneously, and the gauginos mediate the supersymmetry breaking to the MSSM sector. Both of these parameters are strongly suppressed due to the profile of $N$. Thus these parameters induced from those of the order of the so-called GUT scale can become close to the electroweak scale without unnatural fine tuning.

Family Gauge Bosons with an Inverted Mass Hierarchy

A model that gives family gauge bosons with an inverted mass hierarchy is proposed, stimulated by Sumino's cancellation mechanism for the QED radiative correction to the charged lepton masses. The Sumino mechanism cannot straightforwardly be applied to SUSY models because of the non-renormalization theorem. In this talk, an alternative model which is applicable to a SUSY model is proposed. It is essential that family gauge boson masses $m(A_i^j)$ in this model is given by an inverted mass hierarchy $m(A_i^i) \propto 1/\sqrt{m_{ei}}$, in contrast to $m(A_i^i) \propto \sqrt{m_{ei}}$ in the original Sumino model. Phenomenological meaning of the model is also investigated. In particular, we notice a deviation from the $e$-$μ$ universality in the tau decays.

Heterotic E6 GUTs and Partition Functions

The E6 grand unified theory is an attractive candidate intermediate theory between the standard model and string theory. However, only one E6 grand unified model with three generations and at least one adjoint Higgs field has been derived from string theory in the literature, and this model is phenomenologically unsatisfactory. Recently, in arXiv:1012.1690, we have constructed two new such E6 grand unified models in heterotic asymmetric orbifolds. Although our new models themselves cannot resolve the unsatisfactory point in the previous model, our discovery raises hopes that one can construct many other such models in this framework and find better models. Here, by giving partition functions explicitly, we explain the details of our construction. Utilizing the lattice engineering technique and the diagonal embedding method, we can construct models systematically. We hope that these techniques and the details of our construction will lead to more phenomenologically desirable models.

Doublet-Triplet Splitting in an SU(5) Grand Unification

We present a new solution to the doublet-triplet splitting problem which also works in a supersymmetric SU(5) grand unified theory and is testable at TeV-scale collider experiments. In our model, the SU(5) symmetry is broken through the Hosotani mechanism. Thanks to the phase nature of the Hosotani-breaking, the "missing VEV" can be realized even in an SU(5) model. A general and distinctive prediction of this solution is the existence of light adjoint chiral supermultiplets with masses of the supersymmetry breaking scale. Though these disturb the gauge coupling unification, it can be recovered keeping the unified gauge coupling constant perturbative by introducing additional vector-like particles, which may be also observed in the upcoming collider experiments.

Grand Gauge-Higgs Unification

We propose a novel way to break grand unified gauge symmetries via the Hosotani mechanism in models that can accommodate chiral fermions. Adjoint scalar fields are realized through the so-called diagonal embedding method which is often used in the heterotic string theory. We calculate the one-loop effective potential of the adjoint scalar field in a five dimensional model compactified on an S^1/Z_2 orbifold, as an illustration. It turns out that the potential is basically the same as the one in an S^1 model, and thus the results in literatures, in addition to the chiral fermions, can be realized easily.

E6 grand unified theory with three generations from heterotic string

We construct two more supersymmetric E6 grand unified models with three generations within the framework of Z12 asymmetric orbifold compactification of the heterotic string theory. Such an asymmetric orbifold is missing in the classification in the literature, which concludes that only one E6 model is possible. In both of the new models, an adjoint Higgs field is obtained in virtue of the diagonal embedding method. This method mods out the three E6 factors of an even self-dual momentum-lattice by a permutation symmetry. In order to realize the E6^3 even self-dual lattice, we utilize the lattice engineering technique. Among the eight possible orbifold actions in our setup, two lead to new E6 models. Though these models still share the unsatisfactory issues with the known one, our discovery raises hopes that excellent models that solve all the problems in the supersymmetric grand unified models will be found in this framework.

Minimal supersymmetric SU(5) model with nonrenormalizable operators: Seesaw mechanism and violation of flavour and CP

Flavour and CP violations that the neutrino-seesaw couplings of types I, II, and III induce radiatively in the soft massive parameters of the minimal supersymmetric SU(5) model, made realistic by nonrenormalizable operators, are analyzed. Effective couplings are used to parametrize the couplings of renormalizable operators and of the corrections that nonrenormalizable ones provide at the tree level. It is found that for a limited, but sufficient accuracy in the calculations of such violations, it is possible to extend the picture of effective couplings to the quantum level, all the way to the cutoff scale. The arbitrariness introduced by nonrenormalizable operators is analyzed in detail. It is shown that it can be drastically reduced in the Yukawa sector if the effective Yukawa couplings involving colored triplet Higgs bosons are tuned to suppress the decay rate of the proton. In the supersymmetry-breaking sector, the usual requirement of independence of flavour and field type for the mechanism of mediation of supersymmetry breaking is not sufficient to forbid arbitrary flavour and CP violations at the tree level. Special conditions to be added to this requirement, under which such violations can be avoided, are identified. Depending on how and whether these conditions are implemented, different phenomenological scenarios emerge. Flavour and CP violations of soft massive parameters induced by neutrino-seesaw couplings are discussed explicitly for the simplest scenario, in which no such violations are present at the tree level. Guidelines for studying them in other, less simple scenarios are given. Lists of all renormalization group equations needed for their calculations are provided for each of the three types of seesaw mechanism, at all energies between the TeV scale and Planck scale.
