Systematic study of the d=5 Weinberg operator at one-loop order

We perform a systematic study of the $d=5$ Weinberg operator at the one-loop level. We identify three different categories of neutrino mass generation: (1) finite irreducible diagrams; (2) finite extensions of the usual seesaw mechanisms at one-loop and (3) divergent loop realizations of the seesaws. All radiative one-loop neutrino mass models must fall into one of these classes. Case (1) gives the leading contribution to neutrino mass naturally and a classic example of this class is the Zee model. We demonstrate that in order to prevent that a tree level contribution dominates in case (2), Majorana fermions running in the loop and an additional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry are needed for a genuinely leading one-loop contribution. In the type-II loop extensions, the lepton number violating coupling will be generated at one loop, whereas the type-I/III extensions can be interpreted as loop-induced inverse or linear seesaw mechanisms. For the divergent diagrams in category (3), the tree level contribution cannot be avoided and is in fact needed as counter term to absorb the divergence.

Search for Lepton Number Violating Charged Current Processes with Neutrino Beams

We propose a new idea to test a class of loop-induced neutrino mass mechanisms by searching for lepton number violating charged current processes with incident of a neutrino beam. The expected rates of these processes are estimated based on some theoretical assumptions. They turn out to be sizable so that detection of such processes could be possible at near detectors in future highly intense neutrino-beam facilities.

Light neutralino in the MSSM: An update with the latest LHC results

We discuss the scenario of light neutralino dark matter in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, which is motivated by the results of some of the direct detection experiments --- DAMA, CoGENT, and CRESST. We update our previous analysis with the latest results of the LHC. We show that new LHC constraints disfavour the parameter region that can reproduce the results of DAMA and CoGENT.

Neutrino mass from higher than d=5 effective operators in SUSY, and its test at the LHC

We discuss neutrino masses from higher than d=5 effective operators in a supersymmetric framework, where we explicitly demonstrate which operators could be the leading contribution to neutrino mass in the MSSM and NMSSM. As an example, we focus on the d=7 operator L L H_u H_u H_d H_u, for which we systematically derive all tree-level decompositions. We argue that many of these lead to a linear or inverse see-saw scenario with two extra neutral fermions, where the lepton number violating term is naturally suppressed by a heavy mass scale when the extra mediators are integrated out. We choose one example, for which we discuss possible implementations of the neutrino flavor structure. In addition, we show that the heavy mediators, in this case SU(2) doublet fermions, may indeed be observable at the LHC, since they can be produced by Drell-Yan processes and lead to displaced vertices when they decay. However, the direct observation of lepton number violating processes is on the edge at LHC.

Light Neutralino in the MSSM: a playground for dark matter, flavor physics and collider experiments

We investigate the constraints to the light neutralino dark matter scenario in the minimal supersymmetric standard model from available experimental observations such as decays of B and K meson, relic dark matter abundance, and the search for neutralino and Higgs production at colliders. We find that two regions of the MSSM parameter space fulfill all the constraints: a fine-tuned strip with large tan beta where the lightest neutralino can be as light as 8 GeV, and a low tan beta region providing a neutralino mass larger than 16 GeV. The large tan beta strip, which can be compatible with recently reported signals from direct detection experiments, can be fully tested by means of low-energy observables and, in particular, by B_s -> mu mu and Higgs bosons searches at the LHC within the upcoming months.

Neutrino Masses from Loop-induced $d \geq 7$ Operators

We propose a new scenario where neutrino masses are generated via operators with the mass dimension higher than five, which are induced at the loop level. The scenario is demonstrated with concrete models where neutrino masses are generated via a one-loop dimension-seven operator which is induced through TeV scale dynamics under the exact $Z_{2}$ symmetry. Tiny neutrino masses are naturally induced from the TeV scale dynamics without introducing any artificial assumption on magnitudes of coupling constants. The combination of one-loop factor $1/(4π)^2$ and the factor of the ratio $(v/Λ)^2$ between the electroweak scale $v$ and new physics scale $Λ$ provides sufficient suppression as compared to the model based on the dimension-five operator induced at the tree level. The reproduction of the data for neutrino masses and mixings are discussed under the constraint from experiments for lepton flavour violation. We also mention phenomenological implications at collider experiments and dark matter candidates.

Summary report of MINSIS workshop in Madrid

Recent developments on tau detection technologies and the construction of high intensity neutrino beams open the possibility of a high precision search for non-standard μ - τ flavour transition with neutrinos at short distances. The MINSIS - Main Injector Non-Standard Interaction Search- is a proposal under discussion to realize such precision measurement. This document contains the proceedings of the workshop which took place on 10-11 December 2009 in Madrid to discuss both the physics reach as well as the experimental requirements for this proposal.

New physics searches at near detectors of neutrino oscillation experiments

We systematically investigate the prospects of testing new physics with tau sensitive near detectors at neutrino oscillation facilities. For neutrino beams from pion decay, from the decay of radiative ions, as well as from the decays of muons in a storage ring at a neutrino factory, we discuss which effective operators can lead to new physics effects. Furthermore, we discuss the present bounds on such operators set by other experimental data currently available. For operators with two leptons and two quarks we present the first complete analysis including all relevant operators simultaneously and performing a Markov Chain Monte Carlo fit to the data. We find that these effects can induce tau neutrino appearance probabilities as large as O(10^{-4}), which are within reach of forthcoming experiments. We highlight to which kind of new physics a tau sensitive near detector would be most sensitive.

Neutrino masses from higher than d=5 effective operators

We discuss the generation of small neutrino masses from effective operators higher than dimension five, which open new possibilities for low scale see-saw mechanisms. In order to forbid the radiative generation of neutrino mass by lower dimensional operators, extra fields are required, which are charged under a new symmetry. We discuss this mechanism in the framework of a two Higgs doublet model. We demonstrate that the tree level generation of neutrino mass from higher dimensional operators often leads to inverse see-saw scenarios in which small lepton number violating terms are naturally suppressed by the new physics scale. Furthermore, we systematically discuss tree level generalizations of the standard see-saw scenarios from higher dimensional operators. Finally, we point out that higher dimensional operators can also be generated at the loop level. In this case, we obtain the TeV scale as new physics scale even with order one couplings.

Fourier Analysis of the Parametric Resonance in Neutrino Oscillations

Parametric enhancement of the appearance probability of the neutrino oscillation under the inhomogeneous matter is studied. Fourier expansion of the matter density profile leads to a simple resonance condition and manifests that each Fourier mode modifies the energy spectrum of oscillation probability at around the corresponding energy; below the MSW resonance energy, a large-scale variation modifies the spectrum in high energies while a small-scale one does in low energies. In contrast to the simple parametric resonance, the enhancement of the oscillation probability is itself an slow oscillation as demonstrated by a numerical analysis with a single Fourier mode of the matter density. We derive an analytic solution to the evolution equation on the resonance energy, including the expression of frequency of the slow oscillation.

Fourier Analysis of the Parametric Resonance of the Neutrino Oscillation in the Presence of Inhomogeneous Matter

We study the parametric resonance of the neutrino oscillation through the matter whose density varies spatially. The Fourier analysis of the matter effect enables us to clarify the parametric resonance condition, which is summarized in a frequency matching between the neutrino oscillation and the spatial variation of the matter density. As a result, the n-th Fourier mode of a matter density profile modifies the energy spectrum of the nu_mu -> nu_e appearance probability at around the n-th dip.

Neutrino factory optimization for non-standard interactions

We study the optimization of a neutrino factory with respect to non-standard neutral current neutrino interactions, and compare the results to those obtained without non-standard interactions. We discuss the muon energy, baselines, and oscillation channels as degrees of freedom. Our conclusions are based on both analytical calculations and on a full numerical simulation of the neutrino factory setup proposed by the international design study (IDS-NF). We consider all possible non-standard parameters, and include their complex phases. We identify the impact of the different parameters on the golden, silver, and disappearance channels. We come to the conclusion that, even in the presence of non-standard interactions, the performance of the neutrino factory hardly profits from a silver channel detector, unless the muon energy is significantly increased compared to the IDS-NF setup. Apart from the dispensable silver channel detector, we demonstrate that the IDS-NF setup is close to optimal even if non-standard interactions are considered. We find that one very long baseline is a key component in the search for non-standard interactions, in particular for |ε^m_{μτ}| and |ε^m_{ττ}|.

Testing non-unitarity of neutrino mixing matrices at neutrino factories

In this paper we explore the effect of non-unitary neutrino mixing on neutrino oscillation probabilities both in vacuum and matter. In particular, we consider the $ν_μ\to ν_τ$ channel and using a Neutrino Factory as the source for $ν_μ$'s discuss the constraints that can be obtained on the moduli and phases of the parameters characterizing the violation of unitarity. We point out how the new CP violation phases present in the case where the non-unitary mixings give rise to spurious ``degenerate'' solutions in the parameter space and discuss how the true solutions can be extricated by combining measurements at several baselines.

Non-standard neutrino interactions in reactor and superbeam experiments

The formalism of non-standard four-fermion interactions provides a convenient, model-independent way of parameterizing a wide class of ``new physics'' scenarios. In this article, we study the performance of reactor and superbeam neutrino experiments in the presence of such non-standard interactions (NSI). Due to interference between the standard and non-standard amplitudes, sizeable effects are to be expected if the NSI parameters are close to their current upper limits. We derive approximate formulas for the relevant oscillation probabilities including NSI, and show how the leading effects can be understood intuitively even without any calculations. We will present a classification of all possible NSI according to their impact on reactor and superbeam experiments, and it will turn out that these experiments are highly complementary in terms of their sensitivity to the non-standard parameters. The second part of the paper is devoted to detailed numerical simulations, which will demonstrate how a standard oscillation fit of the mixing angle theta-13 may fail if experimental data is affected by NSI. We find that for some non-standard terms, reactor and superbeam experiments would yield seemingly conflicting results, while in other cases, they may agree well with each other, but the resulting value for theta-13 could be far from the true value. This offset may be so large that the true theta-13 is even ruled out erroneously. In the last section of the paper, we demonstrate that reactor and superbeam data can actually establish the presence of non-standard interactions. Throughout our discussion, we pay special attention to the impact of the complex phases, and of the near detectors.

Impact of non-standard neutrino interactions on future oscillation experiments

Throughout our discussion, we pay special attention to the impact of the complex phases of the NSI parameters and to the observations at the near detector.

Discovery reach for non-standard interactions in a neutrino factory

We study the discovery reach for Non-Standard Interactions (NSIs) in a neutrino factory experiment. After giving a theoretical, but model-independent, overview of the most relevant classes of NSIs, we present detailed numerical results for some of them. Our simulations take into account matter effects, uncertainties in the neutrino oscillation parameters, systematical errors, parameter correlations, and degeneracies. We perform scans of the parameter space, and show that a neutrino factory has excellent prospects of detecting NSIs originating from new physics at around 1 TeV, which is a scale favored by many extensions of the standard model. It will also turn out that the discovery reach depends strongly on the standard and non-standard CP violating phases in the Lagrangian.

CP violation due to multi Froggatt-Nielsen fields

We study how to incorporate CP violation in the Froggatt--Nielsen (FN) mechanism. To this end, we introduce non-renormalizable interactions with a flavor democratic structure to the fermion mass generation sector. It is found that at least two iso-singlet scalar fields with imposed a discrete symmetry are necessary to generate CP violation due to the appearance of the relative phase between their vacuum expectation values. In the simplest model, ratios of quark masses and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix including the CP violating phase are determined by the CKM element |V_{us}| and the ratio of two vacuum expectation values R=|R|e^{i*alpha} (a magnitude and a phase). It is demonstrated how the angles phi_i (i=1--3) of the unitarity triangle and the CKM off-diagonal elements |V_{ub}| and |V_{cb}| are predicted as a function of |V_{us}|, |R| and α. Although the predicted value of the CP violating phase does not agree with the experimental data within the simplest model, the basic idea of our scenario would be promising to construct a more realistic model of flavor and CP violation.

Vanishing dimension five proton decay operators in the SU(5) SUSY GUT

We propose a natural framework of SU(5) supersymmetric grand unified theory with the minimal particle contents, which does not contain dimension five proton decay operators. The suitable fermion mass hierarchy can be reproduced by higher dimensional operators of an adjoint Higgs field which breaks SU(5) gauge symmetry.
