Analysis of entropy production in finitely slow processes between nonequilibrium steady states

We investigate entropy production in finitely slow transitions between nonequilibrium steady states in Markov jump processes using the improved adiabatic approximation method proposed by Takahashi, Fujii, Hino and Hayakawa [1]. This method provides systematic improvement of the adiabatic approximation on infinitely slow transitions from which we obtain nonadiabatic corrections and has a close relationship with the slow driving perturbation [2, 3]. We analyze two types of excess entropy production of Sagawa and Hayakawa [4] and Hatano and Sasa [5] as examples, and confirm that the leading adiabatic contribution reproduces the known results, and then obtain nonadiabatic corrections written in terms of thermodynamic metrics defined in protocol parameter spaces. We also numerically study the resulting excess entropy production in a two-state system.

Size scaling of self gravitating polymers and strings

We study a statistical ensemble of a single polymer with self gravitational interaction. This is a model of a gravitating string --- the precursor of a black hole. We analyze averaged sizes by mean field approximations with an effective Hamiltonian a la Edwards with Newtonian potential as well as a contact repulsive interaction. We find that there exists a certain scaling region where the attractive and the repulsive forces balance out. The repulsive interaction pushes the critical gravitational coupling to a larger value, at which the size of a polymer becomes comparable to its Schwarzschild radius, and as a result the size of the corresponding black hole increases considerably. We show phase diagrams in various dimensions that clarify how the size changes as the strengths of repulsive and gravitational forces vary.

Emission spectrum of soft massless states from heavy superstring

We calculate emission rates of various bosonic/fermionic soft massless states of open/closed superstring from an ensemble of a highly excited open/closed superstring in the flat background. The resulting spectrum shows thermal distributions at the Hagedorn temperature. We find greybody factors for each process and observe their relation to the ones from blackholes.

Gravitational string-membrane hedgehog and internal structure of black holes

We investigate charged Nambu-Goto strings/membrane systems in the Einstein-Maxwell theory in 3+1 dimensions. We first construct a charged string hedgehog solution that has a single horizon and conical singularity. Then we examine a charged membrane system, and give a simple derivation of its self energy. We find that the membrane may form an extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, but its interior is a flat spacetime. Finally by combining the charged strings and the membrane we construct black hole solutions that have no singularities inside the horizons. We study them in detail by varying the magnitude of the two parameters, namely, the charge times the membrane tension and the string tension. We also argue that the strings have, due to the large redshift inside the system, a fair amount of degrees of freedom that may explain the entropy of the corresponding black holes.

Odderon in baryon-baryon scattering from the AdS/CFT correspondence

Based on the AdS/CFT correspondence, we present a holographic description of various C-odd exchanges in high energy baryon-baryon and baryon-antibaryon scattering, and calculate their respective contributions to the difference in the total cross sections. We predict that, due to the warp factor of AdS_5, the total cross section in pp collisions is larger than in p\bar{p} collisions at asymptotically high energies.

Massless radiation from heavy rotating string and Kerr/string correspondence

We calculate emission rates of a massless state from a highly excited rotating string in perturbative bosonic open string theory. By averaging huge degeneracies of initial string states with specifying the mass and a single component of the angular momentum, we find thermal spectrum in a wide range of the angular momentum. We derive the temperature that characterizes the thermal spectrum from the partition function of a single rotating string from which we also find the entropy and the angular velocity of rotating strings. We also argue based on these quantities the Horowitz-Polchinski correspondence principle between rotating strings/Kerr black holes for non-extremal as well as extremal cases. In the parameter region where the Kerr black holes exist, the thermal spectrum is comparable to scalar emissions from a rotating black hole.

Soft gluons away from jets: distribution and correlation

Recently, an exact conformal mapping between soft gluons emitted from jets at large angle in e+e- annihilation and those in the BFKL evolution of a high energy hadron has been proposed. We elucidate some remarkable aspects of this correspondence and use them to analytically compute the distribution and correlation of gluons in the interjet region. We also establish the timelike counterpart of Mueller's dipole model and discuss the resulting linear and nonlinear evolution equations.

Quantum gravity equation in large N Yang-Mills quantum mechanics

We propose a new interpretation of the BFSS large N matrix quantum mechanics analogous to a novel interpretation of the IKKT matrix model where infinitely large N matrices act as differential operators in a curved space. In this picture, the Schrödinger equation in the BFSS model is regarded as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation which determines the wave function of universe. An explicit solution of wave function is studied in a simple two-dimensional minisuperspace model.

Geometric cross sections of rotating strings and black holes

We study the production cross section of a highly excited string with fixed angular momentum from an ultra-high energy collision of two light strings. We find that the cross section exhibits geometric behavior in a certain region of angular-momentum/impact-parameter space. This geometric behavior is common to the differential cross sections of a black hole production with fixed angular momentum and thus we see another correspondence between strings and black holes.

Jet fragmentation and gauge/string duality

We consider an analog of e^+e^- annihilation in gauge theories which have a dual string description in asymptotically AdS_5 space and discuss the nature of jet fragmentation. We construct the timelike anomalous dimension which governs the scale dependence of the fragmentation function. In the limit of infinite 't Hooft coupling, the average multiplicity rises linearly with the energy and the inclusive spectrum is peaked at the kinematical boundary.

Improved Renormalization Group analysis for Yang-Mills theory

We apply an improved renormalization group analysis for pure Yang-Mills theory at one loop order and obtained the result that a non-perturbatively generated pole mass of gluon emerges as $M_P^2/Λ^2 \simeq 0.66$, where $Λ$ is the $MS$-bar scale.

Production cross section of rotating string

We calculate production cross sections of a single rotating string from a collision of two light states in bosonic string theory. We find that the cross sections are written in terms of the modified Bessel function of the first kind with the degree given by the angular momentum in the high energy regime. We also obtain a similar formula from the partial wave expansion of four point amplitudes. Asymptotic behavior of the cross sections is consistent with a well known form factor of a string.

Hagedorn Strings and Correspondence Principle in AdS(3)

Motivated by the possibility of formulating a strings/black hole correspondence in AdS space, we extract the Hagedorn behavior of thermal AdS_3 bosonic string from 1-loop partition function of SL(2,R) WZW model. We find that the Hagedorn temperature is monotonically increasing as the AdS radius shrinks, reaches a maximum of order of string scale set by the unitarity bound of the CFT for internal space. The resulting density of states near the Hagedorn temperature resembles the form as for strings in flat space and is dominated by the space-like long string configurations. We then argue a conjectured strings/black hole correspondence in AdS space by applying the Hagedorn thermodynamics. We find the size of the corresponding black hole is a function of the AdS radius. For large AdS radius a black hole far bigger than the string scale will form. On the contrary, when the AdS and string scales are comparable a string size black hole will form. We also examine strings on BTZ background obtained through SL(2,Z) transformation. We find a tachyonic divergence for a BTZ black hole of string scale size.

Jet Quenching Parameter in Medium with Chemical Potential from AdS/CFT

We calculate the jet quenching parameter in medium with chemical potential from AdS/CFT correspondence. Our result is summarized in a plot. Moreover, we extract the explicit form of the jet quenching parameter of medium with small chemical potential for phases of dual SYM corresponding to large and small black holes. For the former phase, the jet quenching is increased as the charge density increases, however, for the latter it is the opposite though the background is thermodynamically unstable.

Drag force in SYM plasma with B field from AdS/CFT

We investigate drag force in a thermal plasma of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory via both fundamental and Dirichlet strings under the influence of non-zero NSNS $B$-field background. In the description of AdS/CFT correspondence the endpoint of these strings correspondes to an external monopole or quark moving with a constant electromagnetic field. We demonstrate how the configuration of string tail as well as the drag force obtains corrections in this background.

String Theoretical Interpretation for Finite N Yang-Mills Theory in Two-Dimensions

We discuss the equivalence between a string theory and the two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with SU(N) gauge group for finite N. We find a sector which can be interpreted as a sum of covering maps from closed string world-sheets to the target space, whose covering number is less than N. This gives an asymptotic expansion of 1/N whose large N limit becomes the chiral sector defined by D.Gross and W.Taylor. We also discuss that the residual part of the partition function provides the non-perturbative corrections to the perturbative expansion.
