Effects of magnetic fields on the propagation of nuclear flames in magnetic white dwarfs

We investigate effects of the magnetic field on the propagation of laminar flames of nuclear reactions taking place in white dwarfs (WDs) with the mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit. We calculate the velocities of laminar flames parallel and perpendicular to uniform magnetic fields as eigenvalues of steady solutions for magnetic hydrodynamical equations. As a result, we find that even when the magnetic pressure does not dominate the entire pressure it is possible for the magnetic field to suppress the flame propagation through the thermal conduction. Above the critical magnetic field, the flame velocity decreases with increasing magnetic field strength as $v \sim B^{-1}$. In media with densities of $10^{7}, 10^{8}, \,\mathrm{and}\,10^{9} \unit{g\,cm^{-3}}$, the critical magnetic fields are orders of $\sim 10^{10}, 10^{11}, \,\mathrm{and}\,10^{12} \unit{G}$, respectively.

Compton degradation of gamma-ray line emission from radioactive isotopes in the classical nova V2491 Cygni

To account for the non-thermal emission from the classical nova V2491 Cygni, we perform a series of numerical calculations of radiative transfer of γ-ray photons from the radioactive isotope $^{22}$Na in the matter ejected from a white dwarf. Using a simple wind model for the dynamical evolution of the ejecta and a monte-carlo code, we calculate radiative transfer of the γ-ray photons in the ejecta. Repeated scattering of the γ-ray photons by electrons in the ejecta, i.e., Compton degradation, results in an extremely flat spectrum in the hard X-ray range, which successfully reproduces the observed spectrum of the X-ray emission from V2491 Cygni. The amount of the isotope $^{22}$Na synthesized in the ejecta is required to be 3\times 10^{-5} M_\odot to account for the flux of the hard X-ray emission. Our model indicates that the ejecta become transparent to the γ-ray photons within several tens days. Using the results, we briefly discuss the detectability of the γ-ray line emission by the {\it INTEGRAL} gamma-ray observatory and the {\it Fermi} Gamma-ray Space Telescope.

Boron Synthesis in Type Ic Supernovae

We investigate the neutrino-process in an energetic Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) and resultant productions of the light elements including boron and its stable isotopes. SN Ic is a very unique boron source because it can produce boron through not only spallation reactions as discussed in Nakamura & Shigeyama (2004) but also the neutrino-process. The neutrino-process is considered to occur in core-collapse supernovae and previous studies were limited to Type II supernovae (SNe II). Although the progenitor star of an SN Ic does not posses a He envelope so that 7Li production via the neutrino-process is unlikely, 11B can be produced in the C-rich layers. We demonstrate a hydrodynamic simulation of SN Ic explosion and estimate the amounts of the light elements produced via the neutrino-process for the first time, and also the subsequent spallation reactions between the outermost layers of compact SN Ic progenitor and the ambient medium. We find that the neutrino-process in the current SN Ic model produces a significant amount of 11B, which is diluted by 10B from spallation reactions to get closer to B isotopic ratios observed in meteorites. We also confirm that high-temperature mu- and tau-neutrinos and their anti-neutrinos, reasonably suggested from the compact structure of SN Ic progenitors, enhance the light element production through the neutral-current reactions, which may imply an important role of SNe Ic in the Galactic chemical evolution.

Non-thermal photon production via bulk comptonization at supernova shock breakout

We investigate roles of the bulk comptonization process in the propagation of thermal photons emitted at the shock breakout of a supernova explosion. We use a hydrodynamical model based on a self-similar solution for the shock breakout. The propagation of photons is treated by a Monte-Carlo technique. Results of the simulations successfully reproduce the power-law spectrum observed by X-ray observations for XRF 080109/SN 2008D, if a mildly relativistic shock velocity is assumed. Effects of some radiative processes, photoionization, radiative recombination, and free-free absorption on the propagation of emitted photons are also investigated. It is found that none of them hardly changes the spectrum regarding the progenitor stars of type Ib or Ic supernovae. Light curves calculated under the assumption of a spherical explosion indicate that the progenitor radius is required to be $/sim 10^{13}$ cm.

Probing Explosion Geometry of Core-collapse Supernovae with Light Curves of the Shock Breakout

We investigate effects of aspherical energy deposition in core-collapse supernovae on the light curve of the supernova shock breakout. We performed two-dimensional hydrodynamical calculations of an aspherical supernova explosion to obtain the time when a shock wave generated in the stellar interior reaches the stellar surface in each radial direction. Using results of the calculations, light curves during the shock breakout are derived in an approximate way. We show that the light curve during the shock breakout can be a strong indicator of aspherical properties of core-collapse supernovae.

Multiple Main Sequence of Globular Clusters as a Result of Inhomogeneous Big Bang Nucleosynthesis

A new mechanism for enhancing the helium abundance in the blue main sequence stars of omega Centauri and NGC 2808 is investigated. We suggest that helium enhancement was caused by the inhomogeneous big bang nucleosynthesis. Regions with extremely high baryon-to-photon ratios are assumed to be caused by the baryogenesis. Its mass scale is also assumed to be 10^6 Msun. An example of the mechanisms to realize these two things was already proposed as the Affleck-Dine baryogenesis. As the baryon-to-photon ratio becomes larger, the primordial helium abundance is enhanced. We calculated the big bang nucleosynthesis and found that there exists a parameter region yielding enough helium to account for the split of the main sequence in the aforementioned globular clusters while keeping the abundances of other elements compatible with observations. Our mechanism predicts that heavy elements with the mass number of around 100 is enhanced in the blue main sequence stars. We estimate the timescales of diffusion of the enhanced helium and mass accretion in several stages after the nucleosynthesis to investigate whether these processes diminish the enhancement of helium. We found that the diffusion does not influence the helium content. A cloud with a sufficiently large baryon-to-photon ratio to account for the multiple main sequence collapsed immediately after the recombination. Subsequently, the cloud accreted the ambient matter with the normal helium content. If the star formation occurred both in the collapsed core and the accreted envelope, then the resultant star cluster has a double main sequence.

A conservative scheme for the relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system

A new scheme for numerical integration of the 1D2V relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system is proposed. Assuming that all particles in a cell of the phase space move with the same velocity as that of the particle located at the center of the cell at the beginning of each time step, we successfully integrate the system with no artificial loss of particles. Furthermore, splitting the equations into advection and interaction parts, the method conserves the sum of the kinetic energy of particles and the electromagnetic energy. Three test problems, the gyration of particles, the Weibel instability, and the wakefield acceleration, are solved by using our scheme. We confirm that our scheme can reproduce analytical results of the problems. Though we deal with the 1D2V relativistic Vlasov-Maxwell system, our method can be applied to the 2D3V and 3D3V cases.

Detailed Analysis of Filamentary Structure in the Weibel Instability

We present results of a 2D3V kinetic Vlasov simulation of the Weibel instability. The kinetic Vlasov simulation allows us to investigate the velocity distribution of dilute plasmas, in which the effect of collisions between particles is negligible, and has the advantage that the accuracy of the calculated velocity distribution does not depend on the density of plasmas at each point in the physical space. We succeed in reproducing some features of the Weibel instability shown by other simulations, for example, the exponentially growing phase, the saturation of the magnetic field strength, the formation of filamentary structure, and the coalescence of the filaments. Especially, we concentrate on the behavior of the filaments after the saturation of the magnetic field strength and find that there is a kind of quasi-equilibrium states before the coalescence occurs. Furthermore, it is found that an analytical solution for stationary states of the 2D3V Vlasov-Maxwell system can reproduce some dominant features of the quasi-equilibrium, e.g, the configuration of the magnetic field and the velocity distribution at each point. The analytical expression could give a plausible model for the transition layer of a collisionless shock where a strong magnetic field generated by the Weibel instability provides an effective dissipation process instead of collisions between particles.

A Novel Method to Construct Stationary Solutions of the Vlasov Maxwell system

A novel method to derive stationary solutions of the Vlasov-Maxwell system is established. This method is based on the assumption that the deviation of the velocity distribution from the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution can be expanded by the Hermite polynomials. By applying our method, a new two-dimensional equilibrium is derived, which may provide an initial setup for investigations of three-dimensional collisionless reconnection of magnetic fields.

Highly He-Rich Matter Dredged Up by Extra Mixing through Stellar Encounters in Globular Clusters

The unveiled main-sequence splitting in omega Centauri as well as NGC 2808 suggests that matter highly-enriched in He (in terms of its mass fraction Y~0.4) was produced and made the color of some main-sequence stars bluer in these globular clusters (GCs). The potential production site for the He-rich matter is generally considered to be massive AGB stars that experience the second dredge-up. However, it is found that massive AGB stars provide the matter with Y~0.35 at most, while the observed blue-shift requires the presence of Y~0.4 matter. Here, we show that extra mixing, which operates in the red giant phase of stars less massive than ~2Msun, could be a mechanism that enhances He content in their envelopes up to Y~0.4. The extra mixing is supposed to be induced by red giant encounters with other stars in a collisional system like GCs. The Y~0.4 matter released in the AGB phase has alternative fates to (i) escape from a GC or (ii) be captured by kinematically cool stars through encounters. The AGB ejecta in omega Cen, which follows the latter case, can supply sufficient He to cause the observed blue-shift. Simultaneously, this scheme generates the extreme horizontal branch, as observed in omega Cen in response to the higher mass loss rates, which is also caused by stellar encounters.

Searching for a Companion Star of Tycho's Type Ia Supernova with Optical Spectroscopic Observations

We report our first results of photometric and spectroscopic observations for Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR Tycho) to search for the companion star of a type Ia supernova (SN Ia). From photometric observations using Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope, we have picked up stars brighter than 22 mag (in $V$-band) for spectroscopy, which are located within a circular region with the radius of 30" around the center of SNR Tycho. If the ejecta of young supernova remnants, such as SNR Tycho, have a sufficient amount of Fe I, we should be able to detect absorption lines at 3720 Åand 3860 Åassociated with transitions from the ground state of Fe I in the spectrum of the companion star. To identify the companion star of a SN Ia using these characteristic absorption lines of Fe I, we made optical low-resolution spectroscopy of their targets using FOCAS on the Subaru Telescope. In our spectroscopic observations, we obtained spectra of 17 stars in the SNR Tycho region and compare them with template stellar spectra. We detect significant absorption lines from two stars at 3720 Å. Since widths of their absorption lines are broad, it is likely that the detected absorptions are due to Fe I in the expanding ejecta of SNR Tycho. However, none of stars exhibits a clear red wing in the observed profiles of the absorption, though a star in the background of the SNR should show it. Hence, we suggest another interpretation that the detected absorption lines might be caused by the peculiarity of stars. A star named Tycho(E) has the absorption line at 3720 Åand its projected position is close to the center of SNR Tycho. Based on our observations, Tycho(E) is a new candidate as the companion star of Tycho's supernova.

Self-similar solutions for the emergence of energy varying shock waves from plane-parallel atmospheres

We present a self-similar solution to describe the propagation of a shock wave whose energy is deposited or lost at the front. Both of the propagation of the shock wave in a medium having a power-law density profile and the expansion of the medium to a vacuum after the shock breakout are described with a Lagrangian coordinate. The Chapman-Jouguet detonation is found to accelerate the medium most effectively. The results are compared with some numerical simulations in the literature. We derive the fractions of the deposited/lost energy at the shock front in some specific cases, which will be useful when applying this solution to actual phenomena.

Relativistic Flows After Shock Emergence

We investigate relativistic flows after a shock wave generated in a star arrives at the surface. First, the sphericity effect is involved through a successive approximation procedure by adding correction terms to an already known self-similar solution in the ultra-relativistic limit assuming the plane parallel geometry. We also find that the involvement of sphericity increases the acceleration in the early phase as compared with that of the original plane-parallel flow. Second, we obtain semi-analytic solutions for a mildly relativistic flow in which the rest mass energy density is not negligible in the equation of state. To take into account this, we use the enthalpy and the pressure instead of using the density and the pressure as thermodynamic variables. These solutions assume self-similar evolutions except for the initial conditions. Third, we have carried out numerical calculations with a special-relativistic hydrodynamical code based on the Godunov method in order to check the applicability of the above sphericity corrections and the semi-analytic solutions. The equation of state used in our calculations includes the rest mass energy density. Comparisons with results of numerical calculations support the validity of the sphericity correction terms. The evolutions of the pressure and the Lorentz factor of each fluid element of the semi-analytic solution for mildly relativistic flows match the numerical results at least in early phases. We also investigate the final free expansion phases by this code. We have derived the final energy distributions for these flows and compare them with previous works.

Surface pollution of main-sequence stars through encounters with AGB ejecta in omega Centauri

The origin of a double main-sequence (MS) in omega Centauri is explored. We have shown from theoretical calculations on the stellar evolution that the colors of MS stars are shifted to those of the observed blue MS if the surface layers are polluted by He-rich materials with the mass of ~ 0.1 solar mass. Stars are supposed to be polluted through numerous encounters with the ejecta descended from massive asymptotic giant-branch (AGB) stars. Two populations of stars with different kinematics exceptionally observed in omega Cen indicate that kinematically cooler stars are more polluted through encounters with AGB ejecta than kinematically hotter ones because the accretion rate is inversely proportional to the cube of the relative velocity. We propose that both of these factors split the MS in omega Cen. This theoretical scheme explains why only omega Cen exhibit a double MS and matches the amount of He necessary to produce the blue MS with that supplied from massive AGB stars. Furthermore, we predict that even if globular clusters (GCs) possess only one generation of stars, the velocity dispersion of stars broaden the MS in the color-magnitude diagram as long as the GCs are massive enough to keep the AGB ejecta after the burst of star formation. This view explains the broad MS recently found in the GC NGC 2808 which exhibits no scatter in [Fe/H] and thus is likely to consist of a single generation of stars unlike the case of omega Cen.

The Origin of Carbon-Enhancement and Initial Mass Function of Extremely Metal-Poor Stars in the Galactic Halo

It is known that the carbon-enhanced, extremely metal-poor (CEMP) stars constitute a substantial proportion in the extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars of the Galactic Halo, by far larger than CH stars in Population II stars. We investigate their origin with taking into account an additional evolutionary path to the surface carbon-enrichment, triggered by hydrogen engulfment by the helium flash convection, in EMP stars of $[Fe/H] \lesssim -2.5$. This process is distinct from the third dredge-up operating in more metal-rich stars and also in EMP stars. In binary systems of EMP stars, the secondary stars become CEMP stars through mass transfer from the primary stars of low and intermediate masses, which have developed the surface carbon-enhancement. Our binary scenario can predict the variations in the abundances not only for carbon but also for nitrogen and s-process elements and reasonably explain the observed properties such as the stellar distributions with respect to the carbon abundances, the binary periods, and the evolutionary stages. Furthermore, from the observed frequencies of CEMP stars with and without s-process element enhancement, we demonstrate that the initial mass function of EMP stars need to give the mean mass $~10\msun$ under the reasonable assumptions on the distributions of orbital separations and mass ratio of binary components. This also indicates that the currently observed EMP stars were exclusively born as the secondary members of binaries, making up $\sim 10%$ remnants of EMP binary systems of mass $~10^8\msun$ in total; in addition to CEMP stars with white dwarf companions, a significant fraction of them have experienced supernova explosions of their companions. We discuss the implications of the present results in relation to the formation of Galactic halo.

Light Element Production in the Circumstellar Matter of Energetic Type Ic Supernovae

We investigate energetic type Ic supernovae as production sites for Li6 and Be in the early stages of the Milky Way. Recent observations have revealed that some very metal-poor stars with [Fe/H]<-2.5 possess unexpectedly high abundances of Li6. Some also exbihit enhanced abundances of Be as well as N. From a theoretical point of view, recent studies of the evolution of metal-poor massive stars show that rotation-induced mixing can enrich the outer H and He layers with C, N, and O (CNO) elements, particularly N, and at the same time cause intense mass loss of these layers. Here we consider energetic supernova explosions occurring after the progeniter star has lost all but a small fraction of the He layer. The fastest portion of the supernova ejecta can interact directly with the circumstellar matter (CSM), both composed of He and CNO, and induce light element production through spallation and He-He fusion reactions. The CSM should be sufficiently thick to energetic particles so that the interactions terminate within its innermost regions. We calculate the resulting Li6/O and Be9/O ratios in the ejecta+CSM material out of which the very metal-poor stars may form. We find that they are consistent with the observed values if the mass of the He layer remaining on the pre-explosion core is 0.01-0.1 solar mass, and the mass fraction of N mixed in the He layer is about 0.01. Further observations of Li6, Be and N at low metallicity should provide critical tests of this production scenario.

Self-similar solutions for the interaction of relativistic ejecta with an ambient medium

We find self-similar solutions to describe the interaction of spherically symmetric ejecta expanding at relativistic speeds with an ambient medium having a power law density distribution. Using this solution, the time evolution of the Lorentz factor of the outer shock is derived as a function of the explosion energy, the mass of the ejecta, and parameters for the ambient medium. These solutions are an ultra-relativistic version of the solutions for the circumstellar interaction of supernova ejecta obtained by Chevalier and extensions of the relativistic blast wave solutions of Blandford & Mckee.
