On the ubiquity of uniformly dominant local rings

Let R be a d-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay complete local ring with infinite residue field k. The dominant index $\operatorname{dx}(R)$ is by definition the least number of extensions necessary to build k in the singularity category $\operatorname{D^{sg}}$ out of each nonzero object, up to finite direct sums, direct summands and shifts. The local ring R is called uniformly dominant if $\operatorname{dx}(R)$ is finite. In this paper, we prove that R is uniformly dominant with $\operatorname{dx}(R)\le6d+5$ if R has codimension 2 and is not a complete intersection. Also, we show that R is uniformly dominant with $\operatorname{dx}(R)\le d+1$ if R is Burch, and with $\operatorname{dx}(R)\le d$ if R is either a quasi-fiber product ring, or has multiplicity at most 5 and is not Gorenstein. A result on hypersurfaces by Ballard, Favero and Katzarkov is recovered, and results on Burch rings and quasi-fiber product rings by Takahashi are refined.

On direct summands of syzygies of the residue field of a local ring

We investigate local rings in which a syzygy of the residue field occurs as a direct summand of another syzygy of the field. This class of local rings includes Golod rings, Burch rings and non-trivial fiber products of local rings. For such rings, we prove that the Betti sequence of any finitely generated module is eventually periodically non-decreasing. As an application, we confirm the Tachikawa conjecture for all Cohen-Macaulay local rings satisfying this syzygy condition. In the second part of the paper, we show that a recursive direct sum decomposition of the syzygy of the residue field characterizes Golod rings, thereby establishing the converse to a recent theorem of Cuong-Dao-Eisenbud-Kobayashi-Polini-Ulrich [10].

Classifying KE-closed subcategories over a commutative noetherian ring

Let $\mathsf{mod} R$ denote the category of finitely generated $R$-modules for a commutative noetherian ring $R$. In this paper, we investigate KE-closed subcategories of $\mathsf{mod} R$ as a continuation of our previous work. We associate a function on $\mathrm{Spec} R$ with each KE-closed subcategory of $\mathsf{mod} R$, and show that this function completely determines the original subcategory. To classify the functions obtained from KE-closed subcategories, we introduce the notion of an $n$-Bass function for each $n\ge 0$. We obtain a bijection between the set of KE-closed subcategories and the set of $2$-Bass functions provided that $R$ is $(S_2)$-excellent in the sense of Česnavičius.

On the projective dimension of tensor products of modules

In this paper, we consider finitely generated modules over commutative Noetherian rings whose tensor products have finite projective dimension. We construct examples of modules of infinite projective dimension (and also of infinite Gorenstein dimension) whose tensor products nonetheless have finite projective dimension. Furthermore, we establish nontrivial conditions under which such examples cannot arise. For example, we prove that if the tensor product of two nonzero modules--at least one of which is totally reflexive--has finite projective dimension, then both modules in question must have finite projective dimension.

Syzygies of the residue field over Golod rings

Let $(R,m,k)$ be a Golod ring. We show a recurrent formula for high syzygies of $k$ interms of previous ones. In the case of embedding dimension at most $2$, we provided complete descriptions of all indecomposable summands of all syzygies of $k$.

Depth formula for modules of finite reducing projective dimension

We prove that the depth formula holds for two finitely generated Tor-independent modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings if one of the modules considered has finite reducing projective dimension (for example, if it has finite projective dimension, or the ring is a complete intersection). This generalizes a result of Bergh-Jorgensen which shows that the depth formula holds for two finitely generated Tor-independent modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings if one of the modules considered has reducible complexity and certain additional conditions hold. Each module that has reducible complexity also has finite complexity and finite reducing projective dimension, but not necessarily vice versa. So a new advantage we have is that, unlike modules of reducible complexity, Betti numbers of modules of finite reducing projective dimension can grow exponentially.

Two theorems on the vanishing of Ext

We prove two theorems on the vanishing of Ext over commutative Noetherian local rings. Our first theorem shows that there are no Burch ideals which are rigid over non-regular local domains. Our second theorem reformulates a conjecture of Huneke-Wiegand in terms of the vanishing of Ext, and highlights its relation with the celebrated Auslander-Reiten conjecture. We also discuss several consequences of our results, for example, about the rigidity of the Frobenius endomorphism in prime characteristic p and a generalization of a result of Araya.

When are KE-closed subcategories torsion-free classes?

Let $R$ be a commutative noetherian ring and denote by $\mathsf{mod} R$ the category of finitely generated $R$-modules. In this paper, we study KE-closed subcategories of $\mathsf{mod} R$, that is, additive subcategories closed under kernels and extensions. We first give a characterization of KE-closed subcategories: a KE-closed subcategory is a torsion-free class in a torsion-free class. As an immediate application of the dual statement, we give a conceptual proof of Stanley-Wang's result about narrow subcategories. Next, we classify the KE-closed subcategories of $\mathsf{mod} R$ when $\mathrm{dim} R \le 1$ and when $R$ is a two-dimensional normal domain. More precisely, in the former case, we prove that KE-closed subcategories coincide with torsion-free classes in $\mathsf{mod} R$. Moreover, this condition implies $\mathrm{dim} R \le 1$ when $R$ is a homomorphic image of a Cohen-Macaulay ring (e.g. a finitely generated algebra over a regular ring). Thus, we give a complete answer for the title.

Semidualizing Modules over Numerical Semigroup Rings

A semidualizing module is a generalization of Grothendieck's dualizing module. For a local Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$, the ring itself and its canonical module are always realized as (trivial) semidualizing modules. Reasonably, one might ponder the question; when do nontrivial examples exist? In this paper, we study this question in the realm of numerical semigroup rings and completely classify which of these rings with multiplicity at most 9 possess a nontrivial semidualizing module. Using this classification, we construct numerical semigroup rings in any multiplicity at least 9 possesses a nontrivial semidualizing module.

Rings with q-torsionfree canonical modules

Let A be a Noetherian local ring with canonical module K. We characterize A when K is a torsionless, reflexive, or q-torsionfree module. If A is a Cohen-Macaulay ring, H.-B. Foxby proved in 1974 that the A-module K is q-torsionfree if and only if the ring A is q-Gorenstein. With mild assumptions, we provide a generalization of Foxby's result to arbitrary Noetherian local rings admitting the canonical module. In particular, since the reflexivity of the canonical module is closely related to the ring being Gorenstein in low codimension, we also explore quasi-normal rings, introduced by W. V. Vasconcelos. We provide several examples as well.

Vanishing of (co)homology of Burch and related submodules

We introduce the notion of Burch submodules and weakly $\mathfrak m$-full submodules of modules over local rings and study their properties. One of our main results shows that Burch submodules satisfy 2-Tor rigid and test property. We also show that over a local ring $(R,\mathfrak m)$ a submodule $M$ of a finitely generated $R$-module $X$, such that either $M=\mathfrak m X$ or $M(\subseteq \mathfrak m X$) is weakly $\mathfrak m$-full in $X$, is 1-Tor rigid and a test module provided that $X$ is faithful (and $X/M$ has finite length when $M$ is weakly $\mathfrak m$-full). As an application, we give a new class of rings such that a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand is affirmative over them.

Some characterizations of local rings via reducing dimensions

In this paper we study homological dimensions of finitely generated modules over commutative Noetherian local rings, called reducing homological dimensions. We obtain new characterizations of Gorenstein and complete intersection local rings via reducing homological dimensions. For example, we extend a classical result of Auslander and Bridger, and prove that a local ring is Gorenstein if and only if each finitely generated module over it has finite reducing Gorenstein dimension. Along the way, we prove various connections between complexity and reducing projective dimension of modules.

On the reducing projective dimension of the residue field

In this paper we are concerned with certain invariants of modules, called reducing invariants, which have been recently introduced and studied by Araya-Celikbas and Araya-Takahashi. We raise the question whether the residue field of each commutative Noetherian local ring has finite reducing projective dimension and obtain an affirmative answer for the question for a large class of local rings. Furthermore, we construct new examples of modules of infinite projective dimension that have finite reducing projective dimension, and study several fundamental properties of reducing dimensions, especially properties under local homomorphisms of local rings.

The set of trace ideals of curve singularities

This paper mainly focuses on commutative local domains of dimension one. We then obtain a criterion for a ring to have a finite number of trace ideals in terms of integrally closed ideals. We also explore properties of such rings related to birational extensions, reflexive ideals, and reflexive Ulrich modules. Special attention is given in the case of numerical semigroup rings of non-gap four. We then obtain a criterion for a ring to have a finite number of reflexive ideals up to isomorphism. Non-domains arising from fiber products are also explored.

On a class of Burch ideals and a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand

In this paper we are concerned with a long-standing conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand. We introduce a new class of ideals and prove thateach ideal from such class satisfies the conclusion of the conjecture in question. We also study the relation between the class of Burch ideals and that of the ideals we define, and construct several examples that corroborate our results.

On modules with finite reducing Gorenstein dimension

If $M$ is a nonzero finitely generated module over a commutative Noetherian local ring $R$ such that $M$ has finite injective dimension and finite Gorenstein dimension, then it follows from a result of Holm that $M$ has finite projective dimension, and hence a result of Foxby implies that $R$ is Gorenstein. We investigate whether the same conclusion holds for nonzero finitely generated modules that have finite injective dimension and finite reducing Gorenstein dimension, where the reducing Gorenstein dimension is a finer invariant than the classical Gorenstein dimension, in general.

Trace of canonical modules, annihilator of Ext, and classes of rings close to being Gorenstein

In this note we study trace ideals of canonical modules. Characterizations of the trace ideals in terms of annihilators of certain Ext modules are given. We apply our results to study many classes of rings close to being Gorenstein that appear in recent literature. We discuss the behavior of nearly Gorensteinness, introduced by Herzog-Hibi-Stamate, under reductions by regular sequences. A nearly Gorenstein version of the Tachikawa conjecture is posed, and an affirmative answer given for type 2 rings. We also introduce the class of weakly almost Gorenstein rings using the canonical module, and show that they are almost Gorenstein rings in dimension one, and are closely related to Teter rings in the artinian case. We explain their basic properties and give some examples.

Local rings with self-dual maximal ideal

Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring possessing a canonical module. In this paper we consider when the maximal ideal of R is self-dual, i.e. it is isomorphic to its canonical dual as an R-module. local rings satisfying this condition are called Teter rings, and studied by Teter, Huneke-Vraciu, Ananthnarayan-Avramov-Moore, and so on. On the positive dimensional case, we show such rings are exactly the endomorphism rings of the maximal ideals of some Gorenstein local rings of dimension one. We also provide some connection between the self-duality of the maximal ideal and near Gorensteinness.
