Tuning the hybridization and magnetic ground state of electron and hole doped CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$: an x-ray spectroscopy study

Here we present linear and circular polarized soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data at the Ce $M_{4,5}$ edges of the electron (Ir) and hole-doped (Re) Kondo semiconductor CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$. Both substitutions have a strong impact on the unusual high N$\acute{e}$el temperature, $T_N$=28.5\,K, and also the direction of the ordered moment in case of Ir. The substitution dependence of the linear dichroism is weak thus validating the crystal-field description of CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ being representative for the Re and Ir substituted compounds. The impact of electron- and hole-doping on the hybridization between conduction and 4$f$ electrons is related to the amount of $f^0$ in the ground state and reduction of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. A relationship of $cf$-hybridization strength and enhanced $T_N$ is discussed. The direction and doping dependence of the circular dichroism is in agreement with strong Kondo screening along the crystallographic $a$ direction.

Transitions from a Kondo-like diamagnetic insulator into a modulated ferromagnetic metal in $\bm{\mathrm{FeGa}_{3-y}\mathrm{Ge}_y}$

One initial and essential question of magnetism is whether the magnetic properties of a material are governed by localized moments or itinerant electrons. Here we expose the case for the weakly ferromagnetic system FeGa$_{3-y}$Ge$_y$ wherein these two opposite models are reconciled, such that the magnetic susceptibility is quantitatively explained by taking into account the effects of spin-spin correlation. With the electron doping introduced by Ge substitution, the diamagnetic insulating parent compound FeGa$_3$ becomes a paramagnetic metal as early as at $ y=0.01 $, and turns into a weakly ferromagnetic metal around the quantum critical point $ y=0.15 $. Within the ferromagnetic regime of FeGa$_{3-y}$Ge$_y$, the magnetic properties are of a weakly itinerant ferromagnetic nature, located in the intermediate regime between the localized and the itinerant dominance. Our analysis implies a potential universality for all itinerant-electron ferromagnets.

Anisotropic B-T Phase Diagram of Non-Kramers System PrRh2Zn20

We have investigated the low temperature quadrupolar phenomena of the non-Kramers system PrRh2Zn20 under magnetic fields in the [100] and [110] directions. Our experiments reveal the B-T phase diagram of PrRh2Zn20 involving four electronic states regardless of the field direction, namely, a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) state, an antiferro-quadrupolar (AFQ) ordered state, a novel heavy-fermion (HF) state, and a field-induced singlet (FIS) state. In the wide range of the NFL state, the resistivity can be well scaled by a characteristic temperature, suggesting the realization of the quadrupole Kondo effect. The HF state exhibits a Fermi liquid behavior with a large A coefficient of the T^2 term in the resistivity, suggesting the formation of nontrivial heavy quasi-particles. The FIS state results from the considerable splitting of a non-Kramers doublet by a magnetic field. The phase diagram shows a large anisotropy with respect to the field direction. It is found that the anisotropy of the phase diagram can be explained in terms of that of the energy splitting of the non-Kramers doublet by a magnetic field. This indicates that the low temperature properties of PrRh2Zn20 are governed by the non-Kramers doublet, namely, quadrupole degrees of freedom. Since a similar phase diagram has been obtained for the related compound PrIr2Zn20, it is expected that the B-T phase diagram constructed in this work is universal throughout non-Kramers systems.

Doping Effects on the Electronic Structure of an Anisotropic Kondo Semiconductor CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$: An Optical Study with Re and Ir Substitution

An anisotropic Kondo semiconductor CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ exhibits an unusual antiferromagnetic order at rather high transition temperature $T_0$ of 28.5 K. Two possible origins of the magnetic order have been proposed so far, one is the Kondo coupling of the hybridization between the conduction ($c$) and the $4f$ states and the other is the charge-density wave/charge ordering along the orthorhombic $b$ axis. To clarify the origin of the magnetic order, we have investigated the electronic structure of hole- and electron-doped CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ [Ce(Os$_{1-y}$Re$_y$)$_2$Al$_{10}$ and Ce(Os$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$, respectively] by using optical conductivity spectra along the $b$ axis. The intensity of the $c$-$f$ hybridization gap at $\hbarω\sim50$ meV continuously decreases from $y=0.10$ to $x=0.12$ via $x=y=0$. The intensity of the charge excitation observed at $\hbarω\sim20$ meV has the maximum at $x=y=0$ as similar with the doping dependence of $T_{\rm 0}$. The fact that the charge excitation is strongly related to the magnetic order strengthens the possibility of the charge density wave/charge ordering as the origin of the magnetic order.

Giant isotropic Nernst effect in an anisotropic Kondo semimetal

The "failed Kondo insulator" CeNiSn has long been suspected to be a nodal metal, with a node in the hybridization matrix elements. Here we carry out a series of Nernst effect experiments to delineate whether the severely anisotropic magnetotransport coefficients do indeed derive from a nodal metal or can simply be explained by a highly anisotropic Fermi surface. Our experiments reveal that despite an almost 20-fold anisotropy in the Hall conductivity, the large Nernst signal is isotropic. Taken in conjunction with the magnetotransport anisotropy, these results provide strong support for an isotropic Fermi surface with a large anisotropy in quasiparticle mass derived from a nodal hybridization.

Relation between $c$-$f$ hybridization and magnetic ordering in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$: An optical conductivity study of Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($x\leq0.05$)

A Kondo semiconductor CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ with an orthorhombic crystal structure shows an unusual antiferromagnetic ordering at rather high temperature $T_0$ of 27.3 K, which is lower than the Kondo temperature $T_{\rm K}\sim$ 60 K. In optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] spectra that directly reflect electronic structure, the $c$-$f$ hybridization gap between the conduction and $4f$ states is observed at around 40 meV along the three principal axes. However, an additional peak at around 20 meV appears only along the $b$ axis. With increasing $x$ to 0.05 in Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$, the $T_0$ decreases slightly from 27.3 K to 24 K, but the direction of the magnetic moment changes from the $c$ axis to the $a$ axis. Thereby, the $c$-$f$ hybridization gap in the $σ(ω)$ spectra is strongly suppressed, but the intensity of the 20-meV peak remains as strong as for $x=0$. These results suggest that the change of the magnetic moment direction originates from the decreasing of the $c$-$f$ hybridization intensity. The magnetic ordering temperature $T_0$ is not directly related to the $c$-$f$ hybridization but is related to the charge excitation at 20 meV observed along the $b$ axis.

Electronic Structures of CeM2Al10 (M = Fe, Ru, and Os) Studied by Soft X-ray Resonant and High-Resolution Photoemission Spectroscopies

We have performed a photoemission spectroscopy (PES) study of CeM2Al10 (M = Fe, Ru, and Os) to directly observe the electronic structure involved in the unusual magnetic ordering. Soft X-ray resonant (SXR) PES provides spectroscopic evidence of the hybridization between conduction and Ce 4f electrons (c-f hybridization) and the order of the hybridization strength (Ru < Os < Fe). High-resolution (HR) PES of CeRu2Al10 and CeOs2Al10, as compared with that of CeFe2Al10, identifies two structures that can be ascribed to structures induced by the c-f hybridization and the antiferromagnetic ordering, respectively. Although the c-f hybridization-induced structure is a depletion of the spectral intensity (pseudogap) around the Fermi level (EF) with an energy scale of 20-30 meV, the structure related to the antiferromagnetic ordering is observed as a shoulder at approximately 10-11 meV within the pseudogap. The energies of the shoulder structures of CeRu2Al10 and CeOs2Al10 are approximately half of the optical gap (20 meV), indicating that EF is located at the midpoint of the gap.

Phonon-glass electron-crystal thermoelectric clathrates: Experiments and theory

Type-I clathrate compounds have attracted a great deal of interest in connection with the search for efficient thermoelectric materials. These compounds constitute networked cages consisting of nano-scale tetrakaidecahedrons (14 hedrons) and dodecahedrons (12 hedrons), in which the group 1 or 2 elements in the periodic table are encaged as the so-called rattling guest atom. It is remarkable that, though these compounds have crystalline cubic-structure, they exhibit glass-like phonon thermal conductivity over the whole temperature range depending on the states of rattling guest atoms in the tetrakaidecahedron. In addition, these compounds show unusual glass-like specific heats and THz-frequency phonon dynamics, providing a remarkable broad peak almost identical to those observed in topologically disordered amorphous materials or structural glasses, the so-called Boson peak. An efficient thermoelectric effect is realized in compounds showing these glass-like characteristics. This decade, a number of experimental works dealing with type-I clathrate compounds have been published. These are diffraction experiments, thermal and spectroscopic experiments in addition to those based on heat and electronic transport. These form the raw materials for this article based on advances this decade. The subject of this article involves interesting phenomena from the viewpoint of not only physics but also from the view point of the practical problem of elaborating efficient thermoelectric materials. This review presents a survey of a wide range of experimental investigations of type-I clathrate compounds, together with a review of theoretical interpretations of the peculiar thermal and dynamic properties observed in these materials.

Enhancing high-temperature thermoelectric properties of PtAs2 by Rh doping

The effects of Rh doping on the thermoelectric properties of Pt1-xRhxAs2 (x = 0, 0.005, and 0.01) with pyrite structure were studied by conducting measurements of electrical resistivity rho, Seebeck coefficient S, and thermal conductivity kappa. The sample with x = 0.005 exhibited large S and low rho, resulting in a maximum power factor (S^2/rho) of 65 muW/cmK^2 at 440 K. The peculiarly shaped "corrugated flat band" predicted for PtSb2 might explain the enhanced thermoelectric properties of doped PtAs2.

NMR and NQR Studies on Non-centrosymmetric Superconductors Re7B3, LaBiPt, and BiPd

We report the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements for non-centrosymmetric superconductors Re7B3, LaBiPt, and BiPd containing heavy elements. For all three compounds, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 shows a coherence peak just below Tc and decreases exponentially at low temperatures, which indicates that an isotropic superconducting gap is dominant in these compounds. In BiPd, the height of the coherence peak just below Tc is much suppressed, which suggests that there exists a substantial component of gap with nodes in this compound. Our results indicate that heavy element is not the only factor, but the extent of inversion symmetry breaking is also important to induce a large spin-orbit coupling and an unconventional superconducting state.

Ferromagnetic Instability in a Doped Band-Gap Semiconductor FeGa$_{3}$

We report the effects of electron doping on the ground state of a diamagnetic semiconductor FeGa$_{3}$ with a band gap of 0.5 eV. By means of electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific heat measurements we have found that gradual substitution of Ge for Ga in FeGa$_{3-y}$Ge$_{y}$ yields metallic conduction at a very small level of $y = 0.006$, then induces weak ferromagnetic (FM) order at $y = 0.13$ with a spontaneous moment of 0.1 $μ_{B}$/Fe and a Curie temperature $T_{C}= 3.3$ K, which continues increasing to $T_{C} = 75$ K as doping reaches $y = 0.41$. The emergence of the FM state is accompanied by quantum critical behavior as observed in the specific heat, $C/T \propto -$ln$T$, and in the magnetic susceptibility, $M/B \propto T^{-4/3}$. At $y= 0.09$, the specific heat divided by temperature $C/T$ reaches a large value of 70 mJ/K$^{2}$molFe, twice as large as that reported on FeSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$ for $x_{c}= 0.37$ and Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Sb$_{2}$ for $x_{c}=0.3$ at their respective FM quantum critical points. The critical concentration $y_{c}=0.13$ in FeGa$_{3-y}$Ge$_{y}$ is quite small, despite the fact that its band gap is one order of magnitude larger than those in FeSi and FeSb$_{2}$. In contrast, no FM state emerges by substituting Co for Fe in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$Ga$_{3}$ in the whole range $0 \leq x \leq 1$, although both types of substitution should dope electrons into FeGa$_{3}$. The FM instability found in FeGa$_{3-y}$Ge$_{y}$ indicates that strong electron correlations are induced by the disturbance of the Fe 3d - Ga 4p hybridization.

Optical study of charge instability in CeRu2Al10 in comparison with CeOs2Al10 and CeFe2Al10

The anisotropic electronic structure responsible for the antiferromagnetic transition in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ at the unusually high temperature of $T_0$ = 28 K was studied using optical conductivity spectra, Ce 3d X-ray photoemission spectra, and band calculation. It was found that the electronic structure in the $ac$ plane is that of a Kondo semiconductor, whereas that along the b axis has a nesting below 32 K (slightly higher than $T_0$). These characteristics are the same as those of CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ [S. Kimura {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 056404 (2011).]. The $c$-$f$ hybridization intensities between the conduction and $4f$ electrons of CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ and CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ are weaker than that of CeFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, showing no magnetic ordering. These results suggest that the electronic structure with one-dimensional weak $c$-$f$ hybridization along the b axis combined with two-dimensional strong hybridization in the $ac$ plane causes charge-density wave (CDW) instability, and the CDW state then induces magnetic ordering.

Anisotropic Electronic Structure of the Kondo Semiconductor CeFe2Al10 Studied by Optical Conductivity

We report temperature-dependent polarized optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] spectra of CeFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, which is a reference material for CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ and CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ with an anomalous magnetic transition at 28 K. The $σ(ω)$ spectrum along the b-axis differs greatly from that in the $ac$-plane, indicating that this material has an anisotropic electronic structure. At low temperatures, in all axes, a shoulder structure due to the optical transition across the hybridization gap between the conduction band and the localized $4f$ states, namely $c$-$f$ hybridization, appears at 55 meV. However, the gap opening temperature and the temperature of appearance of the quasiparticle Drude weight are strongly anisotropic indicating the anisotropic Kondo temperature. The strong anisotropic nature in both electronic structure and Kondo temperature is considered to be relevant the anomalous magnetic phase transition in CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ and CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Giant Uniaxial Anisotropy in the Magnetic and Transport Properties of CePd5Al2

Electrical resistivity rho, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization M and specific heat measurements are reported on a singlecrystalline sample of CePd5Al2, showing successive antiferromagnetic orderings at T_N1=4.1 K and T_N2=2.9 K. The temperature dependence of T_N1 shows a Kondo metal behavior with large anisotropy, rho_c/rho_a=3.2 at 20 K, and opening of a superzone gap along the tetragona c-direction below T_N1. Both T_N1 and T_N2 gradually increase with applying pressure up to 2.5 GPa. The data of chi(T) and M(B) in the paramagnetic state were analyzed using a crystalline electric field (CEF) model. It led to a Kramers doublet ground state with wave functions consisting primarily of |+-5/2>, whose energy level is isolated from the excited states by 230 and 300 K. This CEF effect gives rise to the large anisotropy in the paramagnetic state. In the ordered state, the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is manifested as M_c/M_a=20 in B=5 T and at 1.9 K, and chi_c/chi_a=25 in B=0.1 T and at 4 K. This huge uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the antiferromagnetic states can be interpreted in terms of isotropic magnetic interaction among the Ce^{3+} moments governed by the strong CEF. In powder neutron diffraction experiments, magnetic reflections were observed owing to the antiferromagnetic ordered states below T_N1, however, no additional reflection was found below T_N2.

Neutron scattering study of Kondo lattice antiferromagnet YbNiSi3

The Kondo lattice antiferromagnet YbNiSi3 was investigated by neutron scattering. The magnetic structure of YbNiSi3 was determined by neutron diffraction on a single-crystalline sample. Inelastic scattering experiments were also performed on a pulverized sample to study the crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations. Two broad CEF excitations were observed, from which the CEF parameters were determined. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility chi and the magnetic specific heat Cmag were calculated using the determined CEF model, and compared with previous results.

Infrared study on the electronic structure of alkaline-earth-filled skutterudites AT4Sb12 (A = Sr, Ba; M = Fe, Ru, Os)

The optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] spectra of alkaline-earth-filled skutterudites with the chemical formula $A^{2+}M_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ ($A$ = Sr, Ba, $M$ = Fe, Ru, Os) and a reference material La$^{3+}$Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ were obtained and compared with the corresponding band structure calculations and with calculated $σ(ω)$ spectra to investigate their electronic structures. At high temperatures, the energy of the plasma edge decreased with the increasing valence of the guest atoms $A$ in the Fe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ cage indicating hole-type conduction. A narrow peak with a pseudogap of 25 meV was observed in SrFe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, while the corresponding peak were located at 200 and 100 meV in the Ru- and Os-counterparts, respectively. The order of the peak energy in these compounds is consistent with the thermodynamical properties in which the Os-compound is located between the Fe- and Ru-compounds. This indicated that the electronic structure observed in the infrared $σ(ω)$ spectra directly affects the thermodynamical properties. The band structure calculation implies the different electronic structure among these compounds originates from the different $d$ states of the $M$ ions.

Magnetic field tuning of the low temperature state in YbNiSi3

We present detailed, low temperature, magnetoresistance and specific heat data of single crystal YbNiSi3 measured in magnetic field applied along the easy magnetic axis, H || b. An initially antiferromagnetic ground state changes into a field-induced metamagnetic phase at ~16 kOe (T -> 0). On further increase of magnetic field, magnetic order is suppressed at ~85 kOe. The functional behaviors of the resistivity and specific heat are discussed in comparison with those of the few other stoichiometric, heavy fermion compounds with established field-induced quantum critical point.

Iron-Based Heavy Quasiparticles in SrFe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$: An Infrared Spectroscopic Study

Temperature-dependent infrared reflectivity spectra of SrFe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ has been measured. A renormalized Drude peak with a heavy effective mass and a pronounced pseudogap of 10 meV develops in the optical conductivity spectra at low temperatures. As the temperature decreases below 100 K, the effective mass ($m^{*}$) rapidly increases, and the scattering rate ($1/τ$) is quenched. The temperature dependence of $m^{*}$ and $1/τ$ indicates that the hybridization between the Fe 3d spins and the charge carriers plays an important role in determining the physical properties of SrFe$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ at low temperatures. This result is the clear evidence of the iron-based heavy quasiparticles.
