Possibility of color magnetic superconductivity

Two aspects of quark matter at high density are addressed: one is color superconductivity and the other is ferromagnetism. We are mainly concerned with the latter and its relation to color superconductivity, which we call "color magnetic superconductivity". The relation of ferromagnetism and chiral symmetry restoration is also discussed.

Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in Quark Matter - Color magnetic superconductivity -

A coexistent phase of spin polarization and color superconductivity in high-density QCD is studied at zero temperature. The axial-vector self-energy stemming from the Fock exchange term of the one-gluon-exchange interaction has a central role to cause spin polarization. As a significant feature, the Fermi surface is deformed by the axial-vector self-energy and then rotation symmetry is spontaneously broken down. The gap function results in being anisotropic in the momentum space in accordance with the deformation. It is found that spin polarization barely conflicts with color superconductivity, and almost coexists with it.

Kaon Condensation and the Non-Uniform Nuclear Matter

Non-uniform structures of nuclear matter are studied in a wide density-range. Using the density functional theory with a relativistic mean-field model, we examine non-uniform structures at sub-nuclear densities (nuclear ``pastas'') and at high densities, where kaon condensate is expected. We try to give a unified view about the change of the matter structure as density increases, carefully taking into account the Coulomb screening effects from the viewpoint of first-order phase transition.

Neutrino Interactions in Octet Baryon Matter

Neutrino processes caused by the neutral current are studied in octet baryon matter. Previous confusion about the baryonic matrix elements of the neutral current interaction is excluded, and a correct table for them improved by consideration of the proton spin problem is presented instead.

Neutrino Opacities in Neutron Stars with Kaon Condensates

The neutrino mean free paths in hot neutron-star matter are obtained in the presence of kaon condensates. The kaon-induced neutrino absorption process, which is allowed only in the presence of kaon condensates, is considered for both nondegenerate and degenerate neutrinos. The neutrino mean free path due to this process is compared with that for the neutrino-nucleon scattering. While the mean free path for the kaon-induced neutrino absorption process is shown to be shorter than the ordinary two-nucleon absorption process by several orders of magnitude when temperature is not very high, the neutrino-nucleon scattering process has still a dominant contribution to the neutrino opacity. Thus, the kaon-induced neutrino absorption process has a minor effect on the thermal and dynamical evolution of protoneutron stars.

Protoneutron Stars with Kaon Condensation and their Delayed Collapse

Properties of protoneutron stars are discussed in the context of kaon condensation. Thermal and neutrino trapping effects are very important ingredients to study them. By solving the TOV equation, we discuss the static properties of protoneutron stars and the possibility of the delayed collapse during their evolution.

Ferromagnetism of Nuclear Matter in the Relativistic Approach

We study the spin-polarization mechanism in the highly dense nuclear matter with the relativistic mean-field approach. In the relativistic Hartree-Fock framework we find that there are two kinds of spin-spin interaction channels, which are the axial-vector and tensor exchange ones. If each interaction is strong and different sign, the system loses the spherical symmetry and holds the spin-polarization in the high-density region. When the axial-vector interaction is negative enough, the system holds ferromagnetism.

Ferromagnetism of quark liquid and magnetars

Spontaneous magnetization of quark liquid is examined on the analogy with that in electron gas. It is pointed out that quark liquid has potential to be ferromagnetic at rather low densities, around nuclear saturation density. Somme comments are given as for implications on magnetars.

Magnetic instability of quark matter

Spontaneous magnetization of quark liquid is examined. It is pointed out that quark liquid has potential to be ferromagnetic at rather low densities.

Ferromagnetism of quark liquid

Usually it is believed that the Hartree-Fock state of quark matter is a Fermi gas state with no polarisation of spins. We examine the possibility of the polarised quark liquid interacting with the one-gluon-exchange interaction. It is suggested that the Hartree-Fock state shows a spontaneous magnetic instability at low densities through the same mechanism as the appearance of ferromagnetism in electron gas. Metastability of the polarised quark liquid is also discussed.

Nonequilibrium Weak Processes in Kaon Condensation II - Kinetics of condensation ---

The kinetics of negatively charged kaon condensation in the early stages of a newly born neutron star is considered. The thermal kaon process, in which kaons are thermally produced by nucleon-nucleon collisions, is found to be dominant throughout the equilibration process. Temporal changes of the order parameter of the condensate and the number densities of the chemical species are obtained from the rate equations, which include the thermal kaon reactions as well as the kaon-induced Urca and the modified Urca reactions. It is shown that the dynamical evolution of the condensate is characterized by three stages: the first, prior to establishment of a condensate, the second, during the growth and subsequent saturation of the condensate, and the third, near chemical equilibrium. The connection between the existence of a soft kaon mode and the instability of the noncondensed state is discussed. Implications of the nonequilibrium process on the possible delayed collapse of a protoneutron star are also mentioned.

Delayed Collapse of Protoneutron Stars with Kaon Condensate

Equation of state with kaon condensate is derived for isentropic and neutrino-trapped matter. Both are important ingredients to study the delayed collapse of protoneutron stars. Solving the TOV equation, we discuss the static properties of protoneutron stars and implications for their delayed collapse.

Nonequilibrium Weak Processes in Kaon Condensation I --- Reaction rate for the thermal kaon process ---

We investigate the thermal kaon process,in which kaons are thermally produced via nucleon-nucleon collisions. This process is relevant to nonequilibrium dynamics of kaon condensation inside neutron stars. The reaction rates for these processes are calculated, and their temperature and density dependences are compared with those of other reaction rates. It is shown that the thermal kaon process is dominant over other relevant weak reactions throughout the nonequilibrium process, such as the kaon-induced Urca and the modified Urca reactions, and may control the entire evolution of the kaon condensate. The characteristic role of the soft and hard kaons during the evolution is explained, and implications for astrophysical phenomena are briefly discussed.

Protoneutron stars with kaon condensate

A new formulation is presented to treat fluctuations around the kaon condensate. Equation of state (EOS) is given for isothermal and isentropic cases in the heavy-baryon-limit (HBL). The coexistent phase appears in the latter case. The mass-radius relation is given for protoneutron stars and the possibility of the delayed collapse is discussed.

Thermal and Quantum Fluctuations in the Kaon Condensed Phase

A new formulation is presented to treat thermal and quantum fluctuations around the kaon condensate on the basis of chiral symmetry; separating the zero-mode from the beginning and using the path-integral method, we can formulate the inclusion of fluctuations in a transparent way. Nucleons as well as kaons are treated in a self-consistent way to the one-loop order. The effects of the Goldstone mode, stemming from the breakdown of V- spin symmetry in the condensed phase, are figured out. A procedure is discussed to renormalize the divergent integrals properly up to the one-loop order. Consequently the thermodynamic potential is derived. It is pointed out that the zero-point fluctuation by nucleons gives a sizable effect, different from the kaonic one.

Kaon condensation at finite temperature

A new formulation is presented to treat thermal fluctuations around the kaon condensate, based on chiral symmetry. Separating the zero mode from the beginning we perform the imaginary-time path integral to the one loop to get the thermodynamic potential at finite temperature. The role of the Goldstone mode in the kaon condensed phase is elucidated in relation to the equation of state.
