Two-stage Convolutional Neural Network for pseudo six-dimensional phase space reconstruction

In particle accelerators, broad characterization of the six-dimensional (6D) beam phase space is crucial but difficult to obtain with conventional beam diagnostics. We develop a two-stage convolutional neural network (CNN) that reconstructs the 6D phase space from only sixteen transverse $x-y$ screen images taken at a place with dispersion by different phase space rotation angles. The model is trained with simulation data of KEK-Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) injector with ASTRA. The real-space images in the chicane orbit at the KEK-ATF injector were acquired by varying the RF phase of the RF electron gun and the solenoid magnetic field. From these data, we reconstructed a pseudo 6D phase space distribution at the cathode surface, expressed through 15 two-dimensional (2D) distributions covering all pairwise coordinate combinations. The time width and spatial spread of the electron beam at the cathode showed values consistent with the measured values at KEK-ATF. Compared to existing 6D beam imaging measurement techniques such as tomography, it significantly reduces measurement time and required computational resources, enabling the provision of a more practical 6D phase space measurement method.

KEK Accelerator Test Facility Low-Level RF and Timing Systems

The KEK Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) is a dedicated testbed for nanobeam technologies in support of the International Linear Collider (ILC). Stable pulsed operation requires synchronization of the facility timing system with the Low-Level RF (LLRF) system. The timing system distributes trigger and gate signals to key subsystems, including the DAQ, klystrons, laser systems, pulsed kicker magnets, and interlocks. The LLRF system provides phase-coherent RF references and facility-wide clock distribution for synchronization. Achieving ~100 fs-level synchronization depends critically on the phase-noise power spectral density (PN-PSD) of the distributed clock signals and on preserving this performance throughout the distribution network. We present facility-wide measurements of the KEK ATF LLRF clock PN-PSD and discuss the resulting synchronization floor imposed by the stability of the ATF Linac and Damping Ring signal generators.

Measurement of Position Resolutions of L-band Cavity Beam Position Monitors

Beam position monitors (BPMs) are indispensable components of modern particle accelerators, providing real-time diagnostics to ensure precise beam control, stability, and quality. As accelerators such as the International Linear Collider (ILC) aim for nanometer-scale beam sizes at the interaction point, stringent requirements on position resolution arise. Specifically, the main linac of the ILC demands a BPM resolution better than 5 μm to support stable beam transport and minimize emittance growth. To address this, we have developed an L-band cavity BPM optimized for the beam conditions of the ILC. In this paper, we introduce a prototype of an L-band cavity BPM and its signal processing system, describe the methodology for position resolution measurements, discuss the problems and solutions encountered in the past experiment, and report the projected position resolutions of about 300 nm at best.

Operation of ILC250 at the Z-pole

ILC (International Linear Collider) is under consideration as the next global project of particle physics. Its Technical Design Report, published in 2013, describes the accelerator for the center-of-mass energies above 200GeV. The operation of ILC at lower center-of-mass energies has not been studies intensively. This report discusses the operation of the ILC at a center-of-mass 91.2GeV and presents a possible parameter set.

Shintake Monitor in ATF2 : Present Status

A beam size monitor so called Shintake monitor, which uses the inverse Compton scattering between the laser interference fringe and the electron beam was designed for and installed at ATF2. The commissioning at ATF2 was started in the end of 2008 and succeeded in the measurement of the fringe pattern from the scattered gamma-rays. The present status of the Shintake monitor is described here.

Photon generation by laser-Compton scattering at the KEK-ATF

We performed a photon generation experiment by laser-Compton scattering at the KEK-ATF, aiming to develop a Compton based polarized positron source for linear colliders. In the experiment, laser pulses with a 357 MHz repetition rate were accumulated and their power was enhanced by up to 250 times in the Fabry-Perot optical resonant cavity. We succeeded in synchronizing the laser pulses and colliding them with the 1.3 GeV electron beam in the ATF ring while maintaining the laser pulse accumulation in the cavity. As a result, we observed 26.0 +/- 0.1 photons per electron-laser pulse crossing, which corresponds to a yield of 10^8 photons in a second.
