Innermost stable circular orbit of Kerr-Bertotti-Robinson black holes and inspirals from it: Exact solutions

For an uncharged test particle in the Kerr-Bertotti-Robinson spacetime, solutions of two major types of orbits are presented, both in exact forms. First, for both prograde and retrograde motions, the radii of innermost stable circular orbits are expressed fully in terms of the outer and inner horizon radii just in the same form as Kerr black holes, despite the fact that Kerr-Bertotti-Robinson black holes have three parameters. Second, closed analytic solutions are given to the problem of a test particle inspiraling toward the Kerr-Bertotti-Robinson black hole from innermost stable circular orbits at the infinitely distant past. These exact solutions can serve as a springboard for more general solutions and astrophysical applications in the future.

Fractional relativity

By fractional relativity we mean a theoretical framework to study physics with the dispersion relation $E^α=m^αc^{2α}+p^αc^α$, which recovers special relativity at $α=2$. One such framework is established in a particular curved energy-momentum space. It is shown that the fractional Schrödinger equation arises as a nonrelativistic limit of the Klein-Gordon equation in fractional relativity. In this framework, the relative locality makes no contribution to the position uncertainty at the classical level, and the Faraday's law in classical electrodynamics is modified by fractional derivatives.

Primordial perturbations generated by Higgs field and $R^2$ operator

If the very early Universe is dominated by the non-minimally coupled Higgs field and Starobinsky's curvature-squared term together, the potential diagram would mimic the landscape of a valley, serving as a cosmological attractor. The inflationary dynamics along this valley is studied, model parameters are constrained against observational data, and the isocurvature perturbation is evaluated.

Cosmological horizons as new examples of membrane paradigm

In this paper we aim to provide new examples of the application and the generality of the membrane paradigm. The membrane paradigm is a formalism for studying the event horizon of black holes. After analyzing it with some technical details and realizing it in the Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, we apply the paradigm to cosmological horizons, firstly to the pure de Sitter horizon, and then to the trapping horizon of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe. In the latter case, the cosmological stretched horizon is oblique, thus the running of renormalization parameter is nonzero in the timelike direction and gives a correction to the membrane pressure. In this paradigm, the cosmological equations come from continuity equations of the membrane fluid and the bulk fluid respectively.

Modified entropic gravity revisited

Inspired by Verlinde's idea, some modified versions of entropic gravity have appeared in the literature. Extending them in a unified formalism, we derive the generalized gravitational equations accordingly. From gravitational equations, the energy-momentum conservation law and cosmological equations are investigated. The covariant conservation law of energy-momentum tensor severely constrains viable modifications of entropic gravity. A discrepancy arises when two independent methods are applied to the homogeneous isotropic universe, posing a serious challenge to modified models of entropic gravity.

Mass-dependent Lorentz Violation and Neutrino Velocity

Motivated by a recent and several earlier measurement results of the neutrino velocity, we attempt to resolve the apparent discrepancies between them from the viewpoint of mass-energy relation in special relativity. It is argued that a complicated tachyonic neutrino model or a mass-dependent Lorentz violation theory can do this job.

Replaying neutrino bremsstrahlung with general dispersion relations

It is generally held that neutrinos with superluminal velocity will lose their energy spontaneously by radiating electron-positron pairs, similar to bremsstrahlung process. Recently, this process was closely studied for neutrinos whose energy is roughly proportional to their momentum. Confronted with an increasing amount of superluminal neutrino models, it is urgent to calculate the same process for general dispersion relations. The calculation is performed in this paper, without resorting to any nontrivial frame such as the effective "rest frame".

Static Solutions with Spherical Symmetry in f(T) Theories

The spherically symmetric static solutions are searched for in some f(T) models of gravity theory with a Maxwell term. To do this, we demonstrate that reconstructing the Lagrangian of f(T) theories is sensitive to the choice of frame, and then we introduce a particular frame based on the conformally Cartesian coordinates. In this particular frame, the existence conditions of various solutions are presented. Our results imply that only a limited class of f(T) models can be solved in this frame. For more general models, the search for spherically symmetric static solutions is still an open and challenging problem, hopefully solvable in other frames.

Note on Non-Gaussianities in Two-field Inflation

Two-field slow-roll inflation is the most conservative modification of a single-field model. The main motivations to study it are its entropic mode and non-Gaussianity. Several years ago, for a two-field model with additive separable potentials, Vernizzi and Wands invented an analytic method to estimate its non-Gaussianities. Later on, Choi et al. applied this method to the model with multiplicative separable potentials. In this note, we design a larger class of models whose non-Gaussianity can be estimated by the same method. Under some simplistic assumptions, roughly these models are unlikely able to generate a large non-Gaussianity. We look over some specific models of this class by scanning the full parameter space, but still no large non-Gaussianity appears in the slow-roll region. These models and scanning techniques would be useful for future model hunt if observational evidence shows up for two-field inflation.

Coulomb Force as an Entropic Force

Motivated by Verlinde's theory of entropic gravity, we give a tentative explanation to Coulomb's law with an entropic force. When trying to do this, we find the equipartition rule should be extended to charges and the concept of temperature should be reinterpreted. If one accepts the holographic principle as well as our generalizations and reinterpretations, then Coulomb's law, the Poisson equation and the Maxwell equations can be derived smoothly. Our attempt can be regarded as a new way to unify the electromagnetic force with gravity, from the entropic origin. Possibly some of our postulates are related to the D-brane picture of black hole thermodynamics.

Cosmic Steps in Modeling Dark Energy

The past and recent data analyses gave some hints of steps in dark energy. Considering the dark energy as a dynamical scalar field, we investigate several models with various steps: a step in the scalar potential, a step in the kinetic term, a step in the energy density and a step in the equation-of-state parameter w. These toy models provide a workable mechanism to generate steps and features of dark energy. Remarkably, a single real scalar can cross w=-1 dynamically with a step in the kinetic term.

1/R Correction to Gravity in the Early Universe

To explain the accelerated expansion of late universe, the 1/R correction to Einstein gravity is usually considered, where R is the Ricci scalar. This correction term is generally believed to be negligible in the early universe. However, if the 1/R term is inflaton-dependent, it will dramatically change the story of inflation. The entropy perturbation will naturally appear and drive the evolution of curvature perturbation outside the Hubble horizon. In a large class of models, the entropy perturbation can be made nearly scale-invariant. In Einstein gravity the single-field inflation with a quartic potential has been ruled out by recent observations, but it revives when the 1/R term is turned on. The evolution of non-Gaussianities on large scale are also studied and applied to inflation with 1/R correction. In some specific models, a large non-Gaussianity can be naturally generated outside the horizon.

Curvature and Entropy Perturbations in Generalized Gravity

We investigate the cosmological perturbations in generalized gravity, where the Ricci scalar and a scalar field are non-minimally coupled via an arbitrary function. In the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background, by studying the linear perturbation theory, we separate the scalar type perturbations into the curvature perturbation and the entropy perturbation, whose evolution equations are derived. Then we apply this framework to inflation. We consider the generalized slow-roll conditions and the quantization initial condition. Under these conditions, two special examples are studied analytically. One example is the case with no entropy perturbation. The other example is a model with the entropy perturbation large initially but decaying significantly after crossing the horizon.

From N M2's to N D2's

In this short note, we reduce the N=6, U(N)xU(N) Chern-Simons gauge theories to N=8, U(N) Yang-Mills gauge theories. This process corresponds to recovering the world-volume theory of N D2-branes from that of N M2-branes in an intermediate energy range. The supersymmetries are enhanced because in this limit the branes localize far away from the orbifold singularity. Our main scheme is exactly in accordance with Mukhi and Papageorgakis's earlier work, although the Higgs mechanism becomes trickier in the present case. We also speculate on applying the scheme to a large class of new Bagger-Lambert models more generally.

M2-branes Coupled to Antisymmetric Fluxes

By turning on antisymmetric background fluxes, we study how multiple M2-branes are coupled to them. Our investigation concentrates on the gauge invariance conditions for the Myers-Chern-Simons action. Furthermore, the dimensional reduction of M2-branes to D2-branes introduces more constraints on the newly introduced tensors. Particularly, for the theory based on A_4 algebra, we are able to fix all components of them up to an overall normalization constant. These results can not be simply obtained from the previously proposed cubic matrix representation for this algebra. We also comment on cubic matrices as the representations of 3-algebras.

Non-Gaussianity, Isocurvature Perturbation, Gravitational Waves and a No-Go Theorem for Isocurvaton

We investigate the isocurvaton model, in which the isocurvature perturbation plays a role in suppressing the curvature perturbation, and large non-Gaussianity and gravitational waves can be produced with no isocurvature perturbation for dark matter. We show that in the slow roll non-interacting multi-field theory, the isocurvaton mechanism can not be realized. This result can also be generalized to most of the studied models with generalized kinetic terms. We also study the implications for the curvaton model. We show that there is a combined constraint for curvaton on non-Gaussianity, gravitational waves and isocurvature perturbation. The technique used in this paper can also help to simplify some calculations in the mixed inflaton and curvaton models. We also investigate possibilities to produce large negative non-Gaussianity and nonlocal non-Gaussianity in the curvaton model.

General Single Field Inflation with Large Positive Non-Gaussianity

Recent analysis of the WMAP three year data suggests $f_{NL}^{local}\simeq86.8$ in the WMAP convention. It is necessary to make sure whether general single field inflation can produce a large positive $f_{NL}$ before turning to other scenarios. We give some examples to generate a large positive $f_{NL}^{equil}$ in general single field inflation. Our models are different from ghost inflation. Due to the appearance of non-conventional kinetic terms, $f_{NL}^{equil}\gg1$ can be realized in single field inflation.

Probing Alpha-Vacua of Black Holes in LHC

Motivated by the idea of alpha-vacua in Schwarzschild spacetime, we studied the deformed spectrum of Hawking radiation. Such a deformation would leave signatures on the small black hole evaporation in LHC because their vacuum deviates from the Unruh state.
