Surface state mediated ferromagnetism in Mn$_{0.14}$Bi$_{1.86}$Te$_3$ thin films

A spontaneous ferromagnetic moment can be induced in Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films below a temperature T $\approx$ 16 K by the introduction of Mn dopants. We demonstrate that films grown via molecular beam epitaxy with the stoichiometry Mn$_{0.14}$Bi$_{1.86}$Te$_3$ maintain the crystal structure of pure Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$. The van der Waals nature of inter-layer forces in the Mn$_{0.14}$Bi$_{1.86}$Te$_3$ crystal causes lattice mismatch with the underlayer to have a limited effect on the resulting crystal structure, as we demonstrate by thin film growth on tetragonal MgF$_{2}$ (110) and NiF$_{2}$ (110). Electronic transport and magnetic moment measurements show that the ferromagnetic moment of the Mn$_{0.14}$Bi$_{1.86}$Te$_3$ thin films is enhanced as the Fermi level moves from the bulk conduction band and towards the bulk band gap, suggesting that electronic surface states play an important role in mediating the ferromagnetic order. Ferromagnetic Mn$_{0.14}$Bi$_{1.86}$Te$_3$/antiferromagnetic NiF$_{2}$ bilayers show evidence that the ferromagnetic moment of the Mn$_{0.14}$Bi$_{1.86}$Te$_3$ film is suppressed, suggesting the existence of an interface effect between the two magnetic layers.

Observation of Giant Orbital Magnetic Moments and Paramagnetic Shift in Artificial Relativistic Atoms and Molecules

Massless Dirac fermions have been observed in various materials such as graphene and topological insulators in recent years, thus offering a solid-state platform to study relativistic quantum phenomena. Single quantum dots (QDs) and coupled QDs formed with massless Dirac fermions can be viewed as artificial relativistic atoms and molecules, respectively. Such structures offer a unique platform to study atomic and molecular physics in the ultra-relativistic regime. Here, we use a scanning tunneling microscope to create and probe single and coupled electrostatically defined graphene QDs to unravel the unique magnetic field responses of artificial relativistic nanostructures. Giant orbital Zeeman splitting and orbital magnetic moment are observed in single graphene QDs. While for coupled graphene QDs, Aharonov Bohm oscillations and strong Van Vleck paramagnetic shift are observed. Such properties of artificial relativistic atoms and molecules can be leveraged for novel magnetic field sensing modalities.

Composition of Terrestrial Exoplanet Atmospheres from Meteorite Outgassing Experiments

Terrestrial exoplanets likely form initial atmospheres through outgassing during and after accretion, although there is currently no first-principles understanding of how to connect a planet's bulk composition to its early atmospheric properties. Important insights into this connection can be gained by assaying meteorites, representative samples of planetary building blocks. We perform laboratory outgassing experiments that use a mass spectrometer to measure the abundances of volatiles released when meteorite samples are heated to 1200 $^{\circ}$C. We find that outgassing from three carbonaceous chondrite samples consistently produce H$_2$O-rich (averaged ~66 %) atmospheres but with significant amounts of CO (~18 %) and CO$_2$ (~15 %) as well as smaller quantities of H$_2$ and H$_2$S (up to 1 %). These results provide experimental constraints on the initial chemical composition in theoretical models of terrestrial planet atmospheres, supplying abundances for principal gas species as a function of temperature.

Structural and electrical characterization of NbO2 thin film vertical devices grown on TiN-coated SiO2/Si substrates

We report on the electrical properties of polycrystalline NbO2 thin film vertical devices grown on TiN coated SiO2/Si substrates using pulsed laser deposition. First, we analyzed the thickness and contact size dependences of threshold switching of NbO2 films grown in 10 mTorr Ar/O2 mixed growth pressure, where 25.1%/74.9% of NbO2/Nb2O5 surface composition content was estimated by ex-situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The leakage current properties in the insulating state were dominated by trap-charge assisted Poole-Frankel conduction mechanism. The threshold switching and self-sustained current oscillatory behavior of films with different NbO2/Nb2O5 composition ratios was measured and analyzed. The second film was grown in lower (1 mTorr) growth pressure which resulted in a higher (34.2%/65.8%) NbO2/Nb2O5 film surface composition. The film grown in higher growth pressure demonstrated lower off-state leakage current, faster switching and self-sustained oscillations with higher frequency than the film grown in lower growth pressure.

Preparation, characterization, and electrical properties of epitaxial NbO2 thin film lateral devices

Epitaxial NbO2 (110) films, 20 nm thick, were grown by pulsed laser deposition on Al2O3 (0001) substrates. The Ar/O2 total pressure during growth was varied to demonstrate the gradual transformation between NbO2 and Nb2O5 phases, which was verified using x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and optical absorption measurements. Electric resistance threshold switching characteristics were studied in a lateral geometry using interdigitated Pt top electrodes in order to preserve the epitaxial crystalline quality of the films. Volatile and reversible transitions between high and low resistance states were observed in epitaxial NbO2 films, while irreversible transitions were found in case of Nb2O5 phase. Electric field pulsed current measurements confirmed thermally-induced threshold switching.
