Attached Submanifolds Beyond Symmetric Spaces

We study submanifold geometry in the presence of symmetry, focusing on submanifolds of solvmanifolds with an unusual property relative to Ricci curvature. We generalize work of H. Tamaru \cite{tamaru-11} in which he explores the geometry of submanifolds of symmetric spaces of noncompact type constructed from parabolic subgroups of the isometry group. He calls these attached submanifolds. The Ricci curvatures of attached submanifolds coincide with the restrictions of the Ricci curvatures of ambient symmetric spaces. We broaden Tamaru's construction by weakening the hypotheses on the ambient space, allowing a pseudo-Riemannian scalar product, and defining attached submanifolds in terms of root spaces. We demonstrate that in this setting, the Ricci curvature restriction property for attached submanifolds holds if and only if the submanifold satisfies an algebraic criterion that we call the Jacobi Star Condition. Like attached submanifolds of symmetric spaces, our attached submanifolds are minimal, and are only totally geodesic under hypotheses analogous to hypotheses in the symmetric space case. Finally, we give an example of a solvmanifold that has an attached submanifold and is not a symmetric space, demonstrating that attached submanifolds are not unique to symmetric spaces.

Uniform Lie Algebras and Uniformly Colored Graphs

Uniform Lie algebras are combinatorially defined two-step nilpotent Lie algebras which can be used to define Einstein solvmanifolds. These Einstein spaces often have nontrivial isotropy groups. We derive basic properties of uniform Lie algebras and we classify uniform Lie algebras with five or fewer generators. We define a type of directed colored graph called a uniformly colored graph and establish a correspondence between uniform Lie algebras and uniformly colored graphs. We present several methods of constructing infinite families of uniformly colored graphs and corresponding uniform Lie algebras.

Ricci flow on three-dimensional, unimodular metric Lie algebras

We give a global picture of the Ricci flow on the space of three-dimensional, unimodular, nonabelian metric Lie algebras considered up to isometry and scaling. The Ricci flow is viewed as a two-dimensional dynamical system for the evolution of structure constants of the metric Lie algebra with respect to an evolving orthonormal frame. This system is amenable to direct phase plane analysis, and we find that the fixed points and special trajectories in the phase plane correspond to special metric Lie algebras, including Ricci solitons and special Riemannian submersions. These results are one way to unify the study of Ricci flow on left invariant metrics on three-dimensional, simply-connected, unimodular Lie groups, which had previously been studied by a case-by-case analysis of the different Bianchi classes. In an appendix, we prove a characterization of the space of three-dimensional, unimodular, nonabelian metric Lie algebras modulo isometry and scaling.

The Ricci Flow for Nilmanifolds

We consider the Ricci flow for simply connected nilmanifolds, which translates to a Ricci flow on the space of nilpotent metric Lie algebras. We consider the evolution of the inner product and the evolution of structure constants, as well as the evolution of these quantities modulo rescaling. We set up systems of O.D.E.'s for some of these flows and describe their qualitative properties. We also present some explicit solutions for the evolution of soliton metrics under the Ricci flow.

The Existence of Soliton Metrics for Nilpotent Lie Groups

We show that a left-invariant metric g on a nilpotent Lie group N is a soliton metric if and only if a matrix U and vector v associated the manifold (N,g) satisfy the matrix equation Uv = [1], where [1] is a vector with every entry a one. We associate a generalized Cartan matrix to the matrix U and use the theory of Kac-Moody algebras to analyze the solution spaces for such linear systems. We use these methods to find infinitely many new examples of nilmanifolds with soliton metrics. We give a sufficient condition for a sum of soliton metric nilpotent Lie algebra structures to be soliton, and we use this criterion to show that soliton metrics exist on every naturally graded filiform metric Lie algebra.

Anosov Automorphisms of Nilpotent Lie Algebras

Each matrix A in GL_n(Z) naturally defines an automorphism f of the free r-step nilpotent Lie algebra on n generators. We study the relationship between the matrix A and the eigenvalues and rational invariant subspaces for f. We give applications to the study of Anosov automorphisms.
