Collective Radiative Enhancement of Rare-Earth Ions in Lithium Niobate via Engineered LargeArea Nanohole Arrays

Conventional approaches to light-matter interactions rely on engineering photonic density of states. More recently, tailoring the spatial geometry of atoms or emitters themselves has emerged as a powerful and complementary route to control collective radiative properties. Here we experimentally realize a geometry-engineered ensemble of rare-earth ions by fabricating a periodic array of subwavelength gold nanoholes on lithium niobate implanted with thulium ions, forming a semi-two-dimensional array of quantum emitters embedded in a high-index crystalline thin film. The hybrid structure can simultaneously support localized and lattice plasmon resonances from the metallic array and collective atomic resonances from the ion ensemble. Using time-resolved photoluminescence and temperature-dependent measurements, we observe enhanced radiative emission attributed to collective atomic effects mediated by the nanohole lattice, distinct from single-emitter Purcell enhancement. Our results demonstrate a new regime of light-matter interaction opening a pathway toward broadband and scalable, geometry-controlled quantum optical interfaces in solid-state platforms.

Efficient Storage of Multidimensional Telecom Photons in a Solid-State Quantum Memory

Efficient storage of telecom-band quantum optical information represents a crucial milestone for establishing distributed quantum optical networks. Erbium ions in crystalline hosts provide a promising platform for telecom quantum memories; however, their practical applications have been hindered by demanding operational conditions, such as ultra-high magnetic fields and ultra-low temperatures. In this work, we demonstrate the storage of telecom photonic qubits encoded in polarization, frequency, and time-bin bases. Using the atomic frequency comb protocol in an Er$^{3+}$-doped crystal, we developed a memory initialization scheme that improves storage efficiency by over an order of magnitude under practical experimental conditions. Quantum process tomography further confirms the memory's performance, achieving a fidelity exceeding 92%.

Modeling Atomistically Assembled Diffractive Optics in Solids

We develop a model describing long-range atom-atom interactions in a two-dimensional periodic or a-periodic lattice of optical centers considering spectral and spatial broadening effects. Using both analytical and numerical Green's function techniques, we develop a mathematical framework to describe effective atom-atom interactions and collective behaviors in the presence of disorder. This framework is applicable to a broad range of quantum systems with arbitrary lattice geometries, including cold atoms, solid-state photonics, and superconducting platforms. The model can be used, for example, to scalably design quantum optical elements, e.g. a quantum lens, harnessing atomistic engineering (e.g. via ion implantation) of collective interactions in materials to enhance quantum properties at scale.

Commutators on Fock spaces

Given a weighted $\ell^2$ space with weights associated to an entire function, we consider pairs of weighted shift operators, whose commutators are diagonal operators, when considered as operators over a general Fock space. We establish a calculus for the algebra of these commutators and apply it to the general case of Gelfond-Leontiev derivatives. This general class of operators includes many known examples, like classic fractional derivatives and Dunkl operators. This allows us to establish a general framework which goes beyond the classic Weyl-Heisenberg algebra. Concrete examples for its application are provided.
