User Scheduling and Power Allocation for Precoded Multi-Beam High Throughput Satellite Systems with Individual Quality of Service Constraints

For extensive coverage areas, multi-beam high throughput satellite (MB-HTS) communication is a promising technology that plays a crucial role in delivering broadband services to many users with diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. This paper focuses on MB-HTS systems where all beams reuse the same spectrum. In particular, we propose a novel user scheduling and power allocation design capable of providing guarantees in terms of the individual QoS requirements while maximizing the system throughput under a limited power budget. Precoding is employed in the forward link to mitigate mutual interference at the users in multiple-access scenarios over different coherence time intervals. The combinatorial optimization structure from user scheduling requires an extremely high cost to obtain the global optimum even when a reduced number of users fit into a time slot. Therefore, we propose a heuristic algorithm yielding good trade-off between performance and computational complexity, applicable to a static operation framework of geostationary (GEO) satellite networks. Although the power allocation optimization is signomial programming, non-convex on a standard form, the solution can be lower bounded by the global optimum of a geometric program with a hidden convex structure. A local solution to the joint user scheduling and power allocation problem is consequently obtained by a successive optimization approach. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms on large-scale systems by providing better QoS satisfaction combined with outstanding overall system throughput.

RIS and Cell-Free Massive MIMO: A Marriage For Harsh Propagation Environments

This paper considers Cell-Free Massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems with the assistance of an RIS for enhancing the system performance. Distributed maximum-ratio combining (MRC) is considered at the access points (APs). We introduce an aggregated channel estimation method that provides sufficient information for data processing. The considered system is studied by using asymptotic analysis which lets the number of APs and/or the number of RIS elements grow large. A lower bound for the channel capacity is obtained for a finite number of APs and engineered scattering elements of the RIS, and closed-form expression for the uplink ergodic net throughput is formulated. In addition, a simple scheme for controlling the configuration of the RIS scattering elements is proposed. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed system design and the benefits of using RISs in Cell-Free Massive MIMO systems are quantified.

Uplink Power Control in Massive MIMO with Double Scattering Channels

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is a key technology for improving the spectral and energy efficiency in 5G-and-beyond wireless networks. For a tractable analysis, most of the previous works on Massive MIMO have been focused on the system performance with complex Gaussian channel impulse responses under rich-scattering environments. In contrast, this paper investigates the uplink ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) of each user under the double scattering channel model. We derive a closed-form expression of the uplink ergodic SE by exploiting the maximum ratio (MR) combining technique based on imperfect channel state information. We further study the asymptotic SE behaviors as a function of the number of antennas at each base station (BS) and the number of scatterers available at each radio channel. We then formulate and solve a total energy optimization problem for the uplink data transmission that aims at simultaneously satisfying the required SEs from all the users with limited data power resource. Notably, our proposed algorithms can cope with the congestion issue appearing when at least one user is served by lower SE than requested. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of the closed-form ergodic SE over Monte-Carlo simulations. Besides, the system can still provide the required SEs to many users even under congestion.

Learning to Perform Downlink Channel Estimation in Massive MIMO Systems

We study downlink (DL) channel estimation in a multi-cell Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system operating in a time-division duplex. The users must know their effective channel gains to decode their received DL data signals. A common approach is to use the mean value as the estimate, motivated by channel hardening, but this is associated with a substantial performance loss in non-isotropic scattering environments. We propose two novel estimation methods. The first method is model-aided and utilizes asymptotic arguments to identify a connection between the effective channel gain and the average received power during a coherence block. The second one is a deep-learning-based approach that uses a neural network to identify a mapping between the available information and the effective channel gain. We compare the proposed methods against other benchmarks in terms of normalized mean-squared error and spectral efficiency (SE). The proposed methods provide substantial improvements, with the learning-based solution being the best of the considered estimators.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Assisted Massive MIMO: Favorable Propagation, Channel Hardening, and Rank Deficiency

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) are two promising technologies for 5G-and-beyond wireless networks, capable of providing large array gain and multiuser spatial multiplexing. Without requiring additional frequency bands, those technologies offer significant improvements in both spectral and energy efficiency by simultaneously serving many users. The performance analysis of an RIS-assisted Massive MIMO system as a function of the channel statistics relies heavily on fundamental properties including favorable propagation, channel hardening, and rank deficiency. The coexistence of both direct and indirect links results in aggregated channels, whose properties are the main concerns of this lecture note. For practical systems with a finite number of antennas and scattering elements of the RIS, we evaluate the corresponding deterministic metrics with Rayleigh fading channels as a typical example.

Pilot Assignment for Joint Uplink-Downlink Spectral Efficiency Enhancement in Massive MIMO Systems with Spatial Correlation

This paper proposes a flexible pilot assignment method to jointly optimize the uplink and downlink data transmission in multi-cell Massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems with correlated Rayleigh fading channels. By utilizing a closed-form expression of the ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) achieved with maximum ratio processing, we formulate an optimization problem for maximizing the minimum weighted sum of the uplink and downlink SEs subject to the transmit powers and pilot assignment sets. This combinatiorial optimization problem is solved by two sequential algorithms: a heuristic pilot assignment is first proposed to obtain a good pilot reuse set and the data power control is then implemented. Numerical results manifest that the proposed algorithm converges fast to a better minimum sum SE per user than the algorithms in previous works.

User Scheduling for Precoded Satellite Systems with Individual Quality of Service Constraints

Multibeam high throughput satellite (MB-HTS) systems will play a key role in delivering broadband services to a large number of users with diverse Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. This paper focuses on MB-HTS where the same spectrum is re-used by all user links and, in particular, we propose a novel user scheduling design capable to provide guarantees in terms of individual QoS requirements while maximizing the system throughput. This is achieved by precoding to mitigate mutual interference. The combinatorial optimization structure requires an extremely high cost to obtain the global optimum even with a reduced number of users. We, therefore, propose a heuristic algorithm yielding a good local solution and tolerable computational complexity, applicable for large-scale networks. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm on scheduling many users with better sum throughput than the other benchmarks. Besides, the QoS requirements for all scheduled users are guaranteed.

Outage Probability Analysis of IRS-Assisted Systems Under Spatially Correlated Channels

This paper investigates the impact of spatial channel correlation on the outage probability of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted single-input single-output (SISO) communication systems. In particular, we derive a novel closed-form expression of the outage probability for arbitrary phase shifts and correlation matrices of the indirect channels. To shed light on the impact of the spatial correlation, we further attain the closed-form expressions for two common scenarios met in the literature when the large-scale fading coefficients are expressed by the loss over a propagation distance. Numerical results validate the tightness and effectiveness of the closed-form expressions. Furthermore, the spatial correlation offers significant decreases in the outage probability as the direct channel is blocked.

Massive MIMO under Double Scattering Channels: Power Minimization and Congestion Controls

This paper considers a massive MIMO system under the double scattering channels. We derive a closed-form expression of the uplink ergodic spectral efficiency (SE) by exploiting the maximum-ratio combining technique with imperfect channel state information. We then formulate and solve a total uplink data power optimization problem that aims at simultaneously satisfying the required SEs from all the users with limited power resources. We further propose algorithms to cope with the congestion issue appearing when at least one user is served by lower SE than requested. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of our proposed power optimization. More importantly, our proposed congestion-handling algorithms can guarantee the required SEs to many users under congestion, even when the SE requirement is high.

On the Performance of Image Recovery in Massive MIMO Communications

Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) has demonstrated as a potential candidate for 5G-and-beyond wireless networks. Instead of using Gaussian signals as most of the previous works, this paper makes a novel contribution by investigating the transmission quality of image data by utilizing the Massive MIMO technology. We first construct a framework to decode the image signal from the noisy received data in the uplink Massive MIMO transmission by utilizing the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approach. Then, a low-pass filter is exploited to enhance the efficiency of the remaining noise and artifacts reduction in the recovered image. Numerical results demonstrate the necessity of a post-filtering process in enhancing the quality of image recovery.

Deep Learning-Aided 5G Channel Estimation

Deep learning has demonstrated the important roles in improving the system performance and reducing computational complexity for $5$G-and-beyond networks. In this paper, we propose a new channel estimation method with the assistance of deep learning in order to support the least squares estimation, which is a low-cost method but having relatively high channel estimation errors. This goal is achieved by utilizing a MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system with a multi-path channel profile used for simulations in the 5G networks under the severity of Doppler effects. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed deep learning-assisted channel estimation method over the other channel estimation methods in previous works in terms of mean square errors.

Coverage Probability and Ergodic Capacity of Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Enhanced Communication Systems

This paper studies the performance of a single-input single-output (SISO) system enhanced by the assistance of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), which is equipped with a finite number of elements under Rayleigh fading channels. From the instantaneous channel capacity, we compute a closed-form expression of the coverage probability as a function of statistical channel information only. A scaling law of the coverage probability and the number of phase shifts is further obtained. The ergodic capacity is derived, then a simple upper bound to simplify matters of utilizing the symbolic functions and can be applied for a long period of time. Numerical results manifest the tightness and effectiveness of our closed-form expressions compared with Monte-Carlo simulations.

Joint Power Allocation and Load Balancing Optimization for Energy-Efficient Cell-Free Massive MIMO Networks

Large-scale distributed antenna systems with many access points (APs) that serve the users by coherent joint transmission is being considered for 5G-and-beyond networks. The technology is called Cell-free Massive MIMO and can provide a more uniform service level to the users than a conventional cellular topology. For a given user set, only a subset of the APs is likely needed to satisfy the users' performance demands, particularly outside the peak traffic hours. To find achieve an energy-efficient load balancing, we minimize the total downlink power consumption at the APs, considering both the transmit powers and hardware dissipation. APs can be temporarily turned off to reduce the latter part. The formulated optimization problem is non-convex but, nevertheless, a globally optimal solution is obtained by solving a mixed-integer second-order cone program. Since the computational complexity is prohibitive for real-time implementation, we also propose two low-complexity algorithms that exploit the inherent group-sparsity and the optimized transmit powers in the problem formulation. Numerical results manifest that our optimization algorithms can greatly reduce the power consumption compared to keeping all APs turned on and only minimizing the transmit powers. Moreover, the low-complexity algorithms can effectively handle the power allocation and AP activation for large-scale networks.

Uplink Power Control in Cellular Massive MIMO Systems: Coping With the Congestion Issue

One main goal of 5G-and-beyond systems is to simultaneously serve many users, each having a requested spectral efficiency (SE), in an energy-efficient way. The network capacity cannot always satisfy all the SE requirements, for example, when some users have bad channel conditions, especially happening in a cellular topology, and therefore congestion can happen. By considering both the pilot and data powers in the uplink transmission as optimization variables, this paper formulates and solves an energy-efficiency problem for cellular Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems that can handle the congestion issue. New algorithms based on the alternating optimization approach are proposed to obtain a fixed-point solution. Numerical results manifest that the proposed algorithms can provide the demanded SEs to many users even when the congestion happens.

Power Control in Cellular Massive MIMO with Varying User Activity: A Deep Learning Solution

This paper considers the sum spectral efficiency (SE) optimization problem in multi-cell Massive MIMO systems with a varying number of active users. This is formulated as a joint pilot and data power control problem. Since the problem is non-convex, we first derive a novel iterative algorithm that obtains a stationary point in polynomial time. To enable real-time implementation, we also develop a deep learning solution. The proposed neural network, PowerNet, only uses the large-scale fading information to predict both the pilot and data powers. The main novelty is that we exploit the problem structure to design a single neural network that can handle a dynamically varying number of active users; hence, PowerNet is simultaneously approximating many different power control functions with varying number inputs and outputs. This is not the case in prior works and thus makes PowerNet an important step towards a practically useful solution. Numerical results demonstrate that PowerNet only loses $2\%$ in sum SE, compared to the iterative algorithm, in a nine-cell system with up to $90$ active users per in each coherence interval, and the runtime was only $0.03$ ms on a graphics processing unit (GPU). When good data labels are selected for the training phase, PowerNet can yield better sum SE than by solving the optimization problem with one initial point.

Optimal Design of Energy-Efficient Cell-Free Massive MIMO: Joint Power Allocation and Load Balancing

A large-scale distributed antenna system that serves the users by coherent joint transmission is called Cell-free Massive MIMO (multiple input multiple output). For a given user set, only a subset of the access points (APs) is likely needed to satisfy the users' performance demands. To find a flexible and energy-efficient implementation, we minimize the total power consumption at the APs in the downlink, considering both the hardware and transmit powers, where APs can be turned off. Even though this is a non-convex optimization problem, a globally optimal solution is obtained by solving a mixed-integer second-order cone program. We also propose a low-complexity algorithm that exploits group-sparsity in the problem formulation. Numerical results manifest that our optimization framework can greatly reduce the power consumption compared to keeping all APs turned on and only minimizing the transmit powers.

Sum Spectral Efficiency Maximization in Massive MIMO Systems: Benefits from Deep Learning

This paper investigates the joint data and pilot power optimization for maximum sum spectral efficiency (SE) in multi-cell Massive MIMO systems, which is a non-convex problem. We first propose a new optimization algorithm, inspired by the weighted minimum mean square error (MMSE) approach, to obtain a stationary point in polynomial time. We then use this algorithm together with deep learning to train a convolutional neural network to perform the joint data and pilot power control in sub-millisecond runtime, making it suitable for online optimization in real multi-cell Massive MIMO systems. The numerical result demonstrates that the solution obtained by the neural network is $1\%$ less than the stationary point for four-cell systems, while the sum SE loss is $2\%$ in a nine-cell system.

Two-Layer Decoding in Cellular Massive MIMO Systems with Spatial Channel Correlation

This paper studies a two-layer decoding method that mitigates inter-cell interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO systems. In layer one, each base station (BS) estimates the channels to intra-cell users and uses the estimates for local decoding on each BS, followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes, while a closed-form expression is obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading channels, maximum-ratio combining (MRC), and large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. We formulate a non-convex sum SE maximization problem with both the data power and LSFD vectors as optimization variables and develop an algorithm based on the weighted MMSE (minimum mean square error) approach to obtain a stationary point with low computational complexity.
