Complete Calabi-Yau metrics in the complement of two divisors

We construct new complete Calabi-Yau metrics on the complement of an anticanonical divisors $D$ in a Fano manifold of dimension at least three, when $D$ consists of two transversely intersecting smooth divisors. The asymptotic geometry is modeled on a generalization of the Calabi ansatz, related to the non-archimedean Monge-Ampère equation.

Stability and the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation

We survey some recent progress on the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills (dHYM) equation. We discuss the role of geometric invariant theory (GIT) in approaching the solvability of the dHYM equation, following work of the first author and S.-T. Yau. We compare the GIT picture with the conjectural picture for dHYM involving Bridgeland stability. In particular, following Arcara-Miles, we show that on the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ any line bundle admitting a solution of the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation is Bridgeland stable, but not conversely. Finally, we survey some recent progress on heat flows associated to the dHYM equation.

On Upper Bounds in Dimension Gaps of CFT's

We consider CFT's arising from branes probing singularities of internal manifolds. We focus on holographic models with internal space including arbtirary Sasaki-Einstein manifolds coming from CY as well as arbitrary sphere quotients. In all these cases we show that there is a universal upper bound (depending only on the spacetime dimension) for the conformal dimension of the first non-trivial spin 2 operator in the dual CFT and a minimal diameter (in AdS units) for the internal space of the holographic dual and conjecture it holds for all CFT's.

Spinor flows with flux, I: short-time existence and smoothing estimates

Spinor fields which are covariantly constant with respect to a connection with flux are of particular interest in unified string theories and supergravity theories, as their existence is required by supersymmetry. In this paper, flows of spinor fields are introduced which are parabolic and whose stationary points are such covariantly constant spinors.

Special Lagrangian cycles and Calabi-Yau transitions

We construct special Lagrangian 3-spheres in non-Kähler compact threefolds equipped with the Fu-Li-Yau geometry. These non-Kähler geometries emerge from topological transitions of compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. From this point of view, a conifold transition exchanges holomorphic 2-cycles for special Lagrangian 3-cycles.

Stability of the tangent bundle through conifold transitions

Let $X$ be a compact, Kähler, Calabi-Yau threefold and suppose $X\mapsto \underline{X}\leadsto X_t$ , for $t\in Δ$, is a conifold transition obtained by contracting finitely many disjoint $(-1,-1)$ curves in $X$ and then smoothing the resulting ordinary double point singularities. We show that, for $|t|\ll 1$ sufficiently small, the tangent bundle $T^{1,0}X_{t}$ admits a Hermitian-Yang-Mills metric $H_t$ with respect to the conformally balanced metrics constructed by Fu-Li-Yau. Furthermore, we describe the behavior of $H_t$ near the vanishing cycles of $X_t$ as $t\rightarrow 0$.

Restricted volumes on Kähler manifolds

We study numerical restricted volumes of (1,1) classes on compact Kahler manifolds, as introduced by Boucksom. Inspired by work of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Mustata-Nakamaye-Popa on restricted volumes of line bundles on projective manifolds, we pose a natural conjecture to the effect that irreducible components of the non-Kahler locus of a big class should have vanishing numerical restricted volume. We prove this conjecture when the class has a Zariski decomposition, and give several applications.

Special Lagrangian submanifolds of log Calabi-Yau manifolds

We study the existence of special Lagrangian submanifolds of log Calabi-Yau manifolds equipped with the complete Ricci-flat Kähler metric constructed by Tian-Yau. We prove that if $X$ is a Tian-Yau manifold, and if the compact Calabi-Yau manifold at infinty admits a single special Lagrangian, then $X$ admits infinitely many disjoint special Lagrangians. In complex dimension $2$, we prove that if $Y$ is a del Pezzo surface, or a rational elliptic surface, and $D\in |-K_{Y}|$ is a smooth divisor with $D^2=d$, then $X= Y\backslash D$ admits a special Lagrangian torus fibration, as conjectured by Strominger-Yau-Zaslow and Auroux. In fact, we show that $X$ admits twin special Lagrangian fibrations, confirming a prediction of Leung-Yau. In the special case that $Y$ is a rational elliptic surface, or $Y= \mathbb{P}^2$ we identify the singular fibers for generic data, thereby confirming two conjectures of Auroux. Finally, we prove that after a hyper-Kähler rotation, $X$ can be compactified to the complement of a Kodaira type $I_{d}$ fiber appearing as a singular fiber in a rational elliptic surface $\checkπ: \check{Y}\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$.

Emergent Sasaki-Einstein geometry and AdS/CFT

We consider supergravity in five-dimensional Anti-De Sitter space $AdS_{5}$ with minimal supersymmetry, encoded by a Sasaki-Einstein metric on a five-dimensional compact manifold $M$. Our main result reveals how the Sasaki-Einstein metric emerges from a canonical state in the dual CFT, defined by a superconformal gauge theory in four dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$in the t'Hooft limit where the rank $N$ tends to infinity. We obtain explicit finite $N-$approximations to the Sasaki-Einstein metric, expressed in terms of a canonical (i.e. background free) BPS-state on the gauge theory side. We also provide a string theory interpretation of the BPS-state in question, which sheds new light on the previously noted intriguing duality of giant gravitons.

On the degeneration of asymptotically conical Calabi-Yau metrics

We study the degenerations of asymptotically conical Ricci-flat Kähler metrics as the Kähler class degenerates to a semi-positive class. We show that under appropriate assumptions, the Ricci-flat Kähler metrics converge to a incomplete smooth Ricci-flat Kähler metric away from a compact subvariety. As a consequence, we construct singular Calabi-Yau metrics with asymptotically conical behaviour at infinity on certain quasi-projective varieties and we show that the metric geometry of these singular metrics are homeomorphic to the topology of the singular variety. Finally, we will apply our results to study several classes of examples of geometric transitions between Calabi-Yau manifolds.

The space of almost calibrated $(1,1)$ forms on a compact Kähler manifold

The space $\mathcal{H}$ of "almost calibrated" $(1,1)$ forms on a compact Kähler manifold plays an important role in the study of the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation of mirror symmetry as emphasized by recent work of the second author and Yau, and is related by mirror symmetry to the space of positive Lagrangians studied by Solomon. This paper initiates the study of the geometry of $\mathcal{H}$. We show that $\mathcal{H}$ is an infinite dimensional Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature. In the hypercritical phase case we show that $\mathcal{H}$ has a well-defined metric structure, and that its completion is a ${\rm CAT}(0)$ geodesic metric space, and hence has an intrinsically defined ideal boundary. Finally, we show that in the hypercritical phase case $\mathcal{H}$ admits $C^{1,1}$ geodesics, improving a result of the second author and Yau. Using results of Darvas-Lempert we show that this result is sharp.

The Dirichlet Problem for the $k$-Hessian Equation on a complex manifold

We solve the Dirichlet problem for $k$-Hessian equations on compact complex manifolds with boundary, given the existence of a subsolution. Our method is based on a second order a priori estimate of the solution on the boundary with a particular gradient scale. The scale allows us to apply a blow-up argument to obtain control on all necessary norms of the solution.

Moment maps, nonlinear PDE, and stability in mirror symmetry

We study the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills (dHYM) equation, which is mirror to the special Lagrangian equation, from the variational point of view via an infinite dimensional GIT problem mirror to Thomas' GIT picture for special Lagrangians. This gives rise to infinite dimensional manifold $\mathcal{H}$ mirror to Solomon's space of positive Lagrangians. In the hypercritical phase case we prove the existence of smooth approximate geodesics, and weak geodesics with $C^{1,α}$ regularity. This is accomplished by proving sharp with respect to scale estimates for the Lagrangian phase operator on collapsing manifolds with boundary. We apply these results to the infinite dimensional GIT problem for deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills. We associate algebraic invariants to certain birational models of $X\times Δ$, where $Δ\subset \mathbb{C}$ is a disk. Using the existence of regular weak geodesics we prove that these invariants give rise to obstructions to the existence of solutions to the dHYM equation. Furthermore, we show that these invariants fit into a stability framework closely related to Bridgeland stability. Finally, we use a Fourier-Mukai transform on toric Kähler manifolds to describe degenerations of Lagrangian sections of SYZ torus fibrations of Landau-Ginzburg models $(Y,W)$. We speculate on the resulting algebraic invariants, and discuss the implications for relating Bridgeland stability to the existence of special Lagrangian sections of $(Y,W)$.

Log-canonical thresholds in real and complex dimension 2

We study the set of log-canonical thresholds (or critical integrability indices) of holomorphic (resp. real analytic) function germs in $\mathbb{C}^2$ (resp. $\mathbb{R}^2$). In particular, we prove that the ascending chain condition holds, and that the positive accumulation points of decreasing sequences are precisely the integrability indices of holomorphic (resp. real analytic) functions in dimension $1$. This gives a new proof of a theorem of Phong-Sturm.

The inverse Monge-Ampere flow and applications to Kahler-Einstein metrics

We introduce the inverse Monge-Ampere flow as the gradient flow of the Ding energy functional on the space of Kahler metrics in $2 πλc_1(X)$ for $λ=\pm 1$. We prove the long-time existence of the flow. In the canonically polarized case, we show that the flow converges smoothly to the unique Kahler-Einstein metric with negative Ricci curvature. In the Fano case, assuming $X$ admits a Kahler-Einstein metric, we prove the weak convergence of the flow to a Kahler-Einstein metric. In general, we expect that the limit of the flow is related with the optimally destabilizing test configuration for the $L^2$-normalized non-Archimedean Ding functional. We confirm this expectation in the case of toric Fano manifolds.

The deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation in geometry and physics

We provide an introduction to the mathematics and physics of the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation, a fully nonlinear geometric PDE on Kahler manifolds which plays an important role in mirror symmetry. We discuss the physical origin of the equation, and some recent progress towards its solution. In dimension 3 we prove a new Chern number inequality and discuss the relationship with algebraic stability conditions.

Sasaki-Einstein metrics and K-stability

We show that a polarized affine variety admits a Ricci flat Kähler cone metric, if and only if it is K-stable. This generalizes Chen-Donaldson-Sun's solution of the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture to Kähler cones, or equivalently, Sasakian manifolds. As an application we show that the five-sphere admits infinitely many families of Sasaki-Einstein metrics.
