On deforming and breaking integrability

In this paper we study nearest-neighbour deformations of integrable models. After expanding in the deformation parameter, we identify four possible types of deformations. First there are deformations that simply break or preserve integrability. Then we find two different subtle cases. The first case is where the deformation is only integrable if all orders of the deformation parameter are taken into account. An example of these are the long-range deformations that appear in holographic models. The second case is when the deformation is perturbatively integrable to some order in the deformation parameter but can not be extended to an integrable model. In this paper we work this out for the XXZ spin chain and discuss the level statistics of each of these cases. We find numerical evidence that the onset of chaos occurs differently in each of these models. For the perturbatively integrable models, we find that the deformation strength at which chaos appears demonstrates a volume-scaling intermediate between strong and weak integrability breaking models.

Probing weak chaos in $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills and long-range spin chains

We study signatures of quantum chaos in finite-loop truncations of the planar dilatation operator in the $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ sector of $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills and its $β$-deformation. These truncations define holographically motivated long-range deformations of the nearest-neighbour XXX spin chain. At one-loop the model is integrable, while the all-loop planar theory is expected to again be integrable. Finite-loop truncations therefore provide a natural setting for investigating how chaotic behaviour emerges between these two integrable limits. We analyse this question using spectral statistics, eigenvector diagnostics and spread complexity. We find that the two- and four-loop truncations develop GOE-like level statistics at sufficiently large coupling but with features characteristic of weak integrability breaking. The integrability breaking at four-loops is weaker than at two-loops and the critical coupling at which chaos occurs is larger, at least for long spin chains. The three-loop truncation does not show the same onset of chaos in the range studied. Eigenvector diagnostics show that the corresponding eigenstates remain less random than GOE vectors, indicating weak ergodicity and multifractality. Finally, we can identify signatures of the eigenvalue and eigenvector chaos in the Krylov-space data. Namely, we demonstrate a correlation of the level spacing statistics with the peak of spread complexity and disorder on the Krylov chain. The delocalisation of the initial state in the Hamiltonian eigenbasis is shown to strongly affect the saturation of complexity. Our results suggest that finite-loop dilatation operators are not generic long-range spin chain Hamiltonians, but already display patterns consistent with the restoration of integrability in the all-loop planar theory.

Celestial amplitudes on electromagnetic backgrounds: T-duality from S-duality

What is the boundary holographic dual of S-duality for gauge theories in asymptotically flat space-times? Celestial amplitudes, by virtue of exhibiting holographic properties of the S-matrix, appear well-suited for studying this question. We scatter electrically and magnetically charged massless scalars off non-trivial electromagnetic potentials such as shockwaves, spin-one conformal primary waves, conformally soft modes and their magnetic duals which we construct. This reveals an intricate relation between conformally soft solutions, descendant CFT three-point functions and, by means of the two-dimensional shadow transform, CFT two-point functions. By comparing celestial amplitudes on electric and magnetic dual backgrounds, we provide evidence that the four-dimensional flat-space holographic dual of S-duality in Abelian gauge theory is two-dimensional T-duality. Moreover, we demonstrate that for two-dimensional boundary actions describing low-energy sectors of the bulk gauge theory, S-duality can be explicitly implemented as a T-duality transformation. We show that the Dirac quantisation condition guarantees gauge invariance in the eikonal re-summation for scattering from potentials which for magnetic scalars can be expressed in terms of 't Hooft loops.

Celestial holography on Kerr-Schild backgrounds

We explore the celestial holography proposal for non-trivial asymptotically flat backgrounds including the Coulomb field of a static and spinning point charge, their gravitational counterparts described by the Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics, as well as the Aichelburg-Sexl shockwave and spinning shockwave geometries and their electromagnetic cousins. We compute celestial two-point amplitudes on these Kerr-Schild type backgrounds which have the desirable feature, due to the presence of an external source, that they are non-vanishing for general operator positions and are not constrained by the kinematic delta functions of flat space celestial CFT correlators. Of particular interest is the case of shockwave backgrounds where the two-point scattering amplitude of massless scalars can be interpreted as a standard CFT three-point correlator between two massless asymptotic states and a conformal primary shockwave operator. We furthermore show that the boundary on-shell action for general backgrounds becomes the generating functional for tree-level correlation functions in celestial CFT. Finally, we derive (conformal) Faddeev-Kulish dressings for particle-like backgrounds which remove all infrared divergent terms in the two-point functions to all orders in perturbation theory.

The SAGEX Review on Scattering Amplitudes, Chapter 11: Soft Theorems and Celestial Amplitudes

The soft limits of scattering amplitudes have been extensively studied due to their essential role in the computation of physical observables in collider physics. The universal factorisation that occurs in these kinematic limits has been shown to be related to conservation laws associated with asymptotic, or large, gauge symmetries. This connection has led to a deeper understanding of the symmetries of gauge and gravitational theories and to a reformulation of scattering amplitudes in a basis of boost eigenstates which makes manifest the two-dimensional global conformal symmetry of the celestial sphere. The recast, or celestial, amplitudes possess many of the properties of conformal field theory correlation functions which has suggested a path towards a holographic description of asymptotically flat spacetimes. In this review we consider these interconnected developments in our understanding of soft theorems, asymptotic symmetries and conformal field theory with a focus on the structure and symmetries of the celestial amplitudes and their holographic interpretation.

Chaotic spin chains in AdS/CFT

We consider the spectrum of anomalous dimensions in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and its $\mathcal{N}=1$ super-conformal Leigh-Strassler deformations. The two-loop truncation of the integrable $\mathcal{N}=4$ dilatation operator in the SU$(2)$ sector, which is a next-to-nearest-neighbour deformation of the XXX spin chain, is not strictly integrable at finite coupling and we show that it indeed has Wigner-Dyson level statistics. However, we find that it is only weakly chaotic in the sense that the cross-over to chaotic dynamics is slower than for generic chaotic systems. For the Leigh-Strassler deformed theory with generic parameters, we show that the one-loop dilatation operator in the SU$(3)$ sector is chaotic, with a spectrum that is well described by GUE Random Matrix Theory. For the imaginary-$β$ deformation, the statistics are GOE and the transition from the integrable limit is that of a generic system. This provides a weak-coupling analogue of the chaotic dynamics seen for classical strings in the dual background. We further study the spin chains in the semi-classical limit described by generalised Landau-Lifshitz models, which are also known to describe large-angular-momentum string solutions in the dual theory. We show that for the higher-derivative theory following from the two-loop $\mathcal{N}=4$ SU$(2)$ spin chain, the maximal Lyapunov exponent is close to zero, consistent with the absence of chaotic dynamics. For the imaginary-$β$ SU$(3)$ theory, the resulting Landau-Lifshitz model has classically chaotic dynamics at finite values of the deformation parameter.

Asymptotic Charges and Coherent States in QCD

We study the connection between asymptotic symmetries in non-Abelian gauge theories and the generalised coherent states following from the application to QCD of the Faddeev-Kulish approach to asymptotic dynamics. We compute the large gauge transformation properties of the soft evolution operators and use this to define the quantum corrected, non-linear contribution to the asymptotic charges. We then compute the one-loop, leading IR-divergent, correction to matrix elements of the charges inserted between dressed scattering states and show that the results depend on a particular order of soft limits. For one choice of ordering we find that the conservation law for the asymptotic charges is not corrected, while for a second we find a correction proportional to the one-loop soft current.

Quantum Chaos in Perturbative super-Yang-Mills Theory

We provide numerical evidence that the perturbative spectrum of anomalous dimensions in maximally supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory is chaotic at finite values of N. We calculate the probability distribution of one-loop level spacings for subsectors of the theory and show that for large N it is given by the Poisson distribution of integrable models, while at finite values it is the Wigner-Dyson distribution of the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble random matrix theory. We extend these results to two-loop order and to a one-parameter family of deformations. We further study the spectral rigidity for these models and show that it is also well described by random matrix theory. Finally we demonstrate that the finite-N eigenvectors possess properties of chaotic states.

One-Loop Non-Planar Anomalous Dimensions in Super Yang-Mills Theory

We consider non-planar one-loop anomalous dimensions in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and its marginally deformed analogues. Using the basis of Bethe states, we compute matrix elements of the dilatation operator and find compact expressions in terms of off-shell scalar products and hexagon-like functions. We then use non-degenerate quantum-mechanical perturbation theory to compute the leading $1/N^2$ corrections to operator dimensions and as an example compute the large $R$-charge limit for two-excitation states through subleading order in the $R$-charge. Finally, we numerically study the distribution of level spacings for these theories and show that they transition from the Poisson distribution for integrable systems at infinite $N$ to the GOE Wigner-Dyson distribution for quantum chaotic systems at finite $N$.

Diagonal Form Factors in Landau-Lifshitz Models

We perturbatively study form factors in the Landau-Lifshitz model and the generalisation originating in the study of the N=4 super-Yang-Mills dilatation generator. In particular we study diagonal form factors which have previously been related to gauge theory structure constants. For the Landau-Lifshitz model, due to the non-relativistic nature of the theory, we are able to compute all orders in perturbation theory and to resum the series to find quantum form factors for low numbers of external particles. We apply our form factors to the study of deformations of the integrable theory by means of form factor perturbation theory. As a check of our method we compute spin-chain S-matrix elements for the Leigh-Strassler family of marginal deformations to leading order in the deformation parameters.

Multi-Soft gluon limits and extended current algebras at null-infinity

In this note we consider aspects of the current algebra interpretation of multi-soft limits of tree-level gluon scattering amplitudes in four dimensions. Building on the relation between a positive helicity gluon soft-limit and the Ward identity for a level-zero Kac-Moody current, we use the double-soft limit to define the Sugawara energy-momentum tensor and, by using the triple- and quadruple-soft limits, show that it satisfies the correct OPEs for a CFT. We study the resulting Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations and show that they hold for positive helicity gluons in MHV amplitudes. Turning to the sub-leading soft-terms we define a one-parameter family of currents whose Ward identities correspond to the universal tree-level sub-leading soft-behaviour. We compute the algebra of these currents formed with the leading currents and amongst themselves. Finally, by parameterising the ambiguity in the double-soft limit for mixed helicities, we introduce a non-trivial OPE between the holomorphic and anti-holomorphic currents and study some of its implications.

Conformal higher spin scattering amplitudes from twistor space

We use the formulation of conformal higher spin (CHS) theories in twistor space to study their tree-level scattering amplitudes, finding expressions for all three-point anti-MHV amplitudes and all MHV amplitudes involving positive helicity conformal gravity particles and two negative helicity higher spins. This provides the on-shell analogue for the covariant coupling of CHS fields to a conformal gravity background. We discuss the restriction of the theory to a ghost-free unitary subsector, analogous to restricting conformal gravity to general relativity with a cosmological constant. We study the flat-space limit and show that the restricted amplitudes vanish, supporting the conjecture that in the unitary sector the S-matrix of CHS theories is trivial. However, by appropriately rescaling the amplitudes we find non-vanishing results which we compare with chiral flat-space higher spin theories.

Conformal Higher Spin Theory and Twistor Space Actions

We consider the twistor description of conformal higher spin theories and give twistor space actions for the self-dual sector of theories with spin greater than two that produce the correct flat space-time spectrum. We identify a ghost-free subsector, analogous to the embedding of Einstein gravity with cosmological constant in Weyl gravity, which generates the unique spin-s three-point anti-MHV amplitude consistent with Poincare invariance and helicity constraints. By including interactions between the infinite tower of higher-spin fields we give a geometric interpretation to the twistor equations of motion as the integrability condition for a holomorphic structure on an infinite jet bundle. Finally, we introduce anti-self-dual interaction terms to define a twistor action for the full conformal higher spin theory.

Double-Soft Limits of Gluons and Gravitons

The double-soft limit of gluon and graviton amplitudes is studied in four dimensions at tree level. In general this limit is ambiguous and we introduce two natural ways of taking it: A consecutive double-soft limit where one particle is taken soft before the other and a simultaneous limit where both particles are taken soft uniformly. All limits yield universal factorisation formulae which we establish by BCFW recursion relations down to the subleading order in the soft momentum expansion. These formulae generalise the recently discussed subleading single-soft theorems. While both types of limits yield identical results at the leading order, differences appear at the subleading order. Finally, we discuss double-scalar emission in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. These results should be of use in establishing the algebraic structure of potential hidden symmetries in the quantum gravity and Yang-Mills S-matrix.

Worldsheet Form Factors in AdS/CFT

We formulate a set of consistency conditions appropriate to worldsheet form factors in the massive, integrable but non-relativistic, light-cone gauge fixed AdS(5) x S**5 string theory. We then perturbatively verify that these conditions hold, at tree level in the near-plane-wave limit and to one loop in the near-flat (Maldacena-Swanson) limit, for a number of specific cases. We further study the form factors in the weakly coupled dual description, verifying that the relevant conditions naturally hold for the one-loop Heisenberg spin-chain. Finally, we note that the near-plane-wave expressions for the form factors, when further expanded in small momentum or, equivalently, large charge density, reproduce the thermodynamic limit of the spin-chain results at leading order.

Comments on World-Sheet Form Factors in AdS/CFT

We study form factors in the light-cone gauge world-sheet theory for strings in AdS_5 x S^5. We perturbatively calculate the two-particle form factor in a closed su(2) sector to one-loop in the near-plane-wave limit and to two-loops in the Maldacena-Swanson limit. We also perturbatively solve the functional equation which follows from the form factor axioms for the world-sheet theory and show that the "minimal" solution correctly reproduces the discontinuities of the perturbative calculations. Finally we propose a prescription, valid for polynomial orders of the inverse world-sheet length, for extracting the finite-volume world-sheet matrix element from the form factors and show that the two-excitation matrix element matches with the thermodynamic limit of the spin-chain description of certain tree-level N=4 SYM structure constants.

Conformal Anomaly for Amplitudes in N=6 Superconformal Chern-Simons Theory

Scattering amplitudes in three-dimensional N=6 Chern-Simons theory are shown to be non-invariant with respect to the free representation of the osp(6|4) symmetry generators. At tree and one-loop level these "anomalous" terms occur only for non-generic, singular configurations of the external momenta and can be used to determine the form of the amplitudes. In particular we show that the symmetries predict that the one-loop six-point amplitude is non-vanishing and confirm this by means of an explicit calculation using generalized unitarity methods. We comment on the implications of this finding for any putative Wilson loop/amplitude duality in N=6 Chern-Simons theory.
