A 20-Liter Test Stand with Gas Purification for Liquid Argon Research

We describe the design of a 20-liter test stand constructed to study fundamental properties of liquid argon (LAr). This system utilizes a simple, cost-effective gas argon (GAr) purification to achieve high purity, which is necessary to study electron transport properties in LAr. An electron drift stack with up to 25 cm length is constructed to study electron drift, diffusion, and attachment at various electric fields. A gold photocathode and a pulsed laser are used as a bright electron source. The operational performance of this system is reported.

Measurement of Longitudinal Electron Diffusion in Liquid Argon

We report the measurement of longitudinal electron diffusion coefficients in liquid argon for electric fields between 100 and 2000 V/cm with a gold photocathode as a bright electron source. The measurement principle, apparatus, and data analysis are described. Our results, which are consistent with previous measurements in the region between 100 to 350 V/cm [1] , are systematically higher than the prediction of Atrazhev-Timoshkin[2], and represent the world's best measurement in the region between 350 to 2000 V/cm. The quantum efficiency of the gold photocathode, the drift velocity and longitudinal diffusion coefficients in gas argon are also presented.

High-gradient High-charge CW Superconducting RF gun with CsK2Sb photocathode

High-gradient CW photo-injectors operating at high accelerating gradients promise to revolutionize many sciences and applications. They can establish the basis for super-bright monochromatic X-ray free-electron lasers, super-bright hadron beams, nuclear- waste transmutation or a new generation of microchip production. In this letter we report on our operation of a superconducting RF electron gun with a record-high accelerating gradient at the CsK2Sb photocathode (i.e. ~ 20 MV/m) generating a record-high bunch charge (i.e., 3 nC). We briefly describe the system and then detail our experimental results. This achievement opens new era in generating high-power electron beams with a very high brightness.

An Engineering Guide To Photoinjectors

Since the discovery of electrons more than a century ago, the generation, transport and characterization of electron beams has been an active field of research. Breakthroughs in this field have led to applications as far reaching as cancer treatment, investigation of nanoscale material and dark matter. In this book, we present a snapshot of the photoinjector technology which has contributed to these advances by providing an introduction to the basic theory and engineering of state-of-the-art electron beam sources. Photoinjectors produce relativistic electrons for exciting new devices such as x-ray free electron lasers and the polarized beams for very high energy physics linear colliders. The chapters are written by renowned experts in the field who share their working knowledge of the technologies needed for designing and building photoinjectors. This 335 page book covers the following topics: Photoinjector Theory, Normal Conducting RF Injectors, Superconducting RF Photoinjectors, DC/RF Injectors, Photocathode Theory, Metal Cathodes, Semiconductor Photocathodes for Unpolarized Beams, Cathodes for Polarized Electron Beams, Laser Systems, RF Systems and Beam Diagnostics.

High-energy high-luminosity electron-ion collider eRHIC

In this paper, we describe a future electron-ion collider (EIC), based on the existing Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) hadron facility, with two intersecting superconducting rings, each 3.8 km in circumference. A new ERL accelerator, which provide 5-30 GeV electron beam, will ensure 10^33 to 10^34 cm^-2 s^-1 level luminosity.
