Matching gauge theory and string theory in a decoupling limit of AdS/CFT

We identify a regime of the AdS/CFT correspondence in which we can quantitatively match N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) for small 't Hooft coupling with weakly coupled type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x S^5. We approach this regime by taking the same decoupling limit on both sides of the correspondence. On the gauge theory side only the states in the SU(2) sector survive, and in the planar limit the Hamiltonian is given by the XXX_{1/2} Heisenberg spin chain. On the string theory side we show that the decoupling limit corresponds to a non-relativistic limit. In this limit some of the bosonic modes and all of the fermionic modes of the string become infinitely heavy and decouple. We first take the decoupling limit of the string sigma-model classically. This enables us to identify a semi-classical regime with semi-classical string states even though we are in a regime corresponding to small 't Hooft coupling. We furthermore analyze the quantum corrections that enter in taking the limit. From this we infer that gauge theory and string theory match, both in terms of the action and the spectrum, for the leading part and the first correction away from the semi-classical regime. Finally we consider the implications for the hitherto unexplained matching of the one-loop contribution to the energy of certain gauge theory and string theory states, and we explain how our results give a firm basis for the matching of the Hagedorn temperature in hep-th/0608115.

Finite-size corrections to the rotating string and the winding state

We compute higher order finite size corrections to the energies of the circular rotating string on AdS_5 x S^5, of its orbifolded generalization on AdS_5 x S^5/Z_M and of the winding state which is obtained as the limit of the orbifolded circular string solution when J -> infinity and J/M^2 is kept fixed. We solve, at the first order in lambda'=lambda/J^2, where lambda is the 't Hooft coupling, the Bethe equations that describe the anomalous dimensions of the corresponding gauge dual operators in an expansion in m/K, where m is the winding number and K is the "magnon number", and to all orders in the angular momentum J. The solution for the circular rotating string and for the winding state can be matched to the energy computed from an effective quantum Landau-Lifshitz model beyond the first order correction in 1/J. For the leading 1/J corrections to the circular rotating string in m^2 and m^4 and for the subleading 1/J^2 corrections to the m^2 term, we find agreement. For the winding state we match the energy completely up to, and including, the order 1/J^2 finite-size corrections. The solution of the Bethe equations corresponding to the spinning closed string is also provided in an expansion in m/K and to all orders in J.

Finite-size corrections in the SU(2) x SU(2) sector of type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3

We consider finite-size corrections in the SU(2) x SU(2) sector of type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3, which is the string dual of the recently constructed N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory of Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena (ABJM theory). The string states we consider are in the R x S^2 x S^2 subspace of AdS_4 x CP^3 with an angular momentum J on CP^3 being large. We compute the finite-size corrections using two different methods, one is to consider curvature corrections to the Penrose limit giving an expansion in 1/J, the other by considering a low energy expansion in lambda'=lambda/J^2 of the string theory sigma-model, lambda being the 't Hooft coupling of the dual ABJM theory. For both methods there are interesting issues to deal with. In the near-pp-wave method there is a 1/\sqrt{J} interaction term for which we use zeta-function regularization in order to compute the 1/J correction to the energy. For the low energy sigma-model expansion we have to take into account a non-trivial coupling to a non-dynamical transverse direction. We find agreement between the two methods. At order lambda' and lambda'^2, for small lambda', our results are analogous to the ones for the SU(2) sector in type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x S^5. Instead at order lambda'^3 there are interactions between the two two-spheres. We compare our results with the recently proposed all-loop Bethe ansatz of Gromov and Vieira and find agreement.

The SU(2) x SU(2) sector in the string dual of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory

We examine the string dual of the recently constructed $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal Chern-Simons theory of Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena (ABJM theory). We focus in particular on the $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ sector. We find a sigma-model limit in which the resulting sigma-model is two Landau-Lifshitz models added together. We consider a Penrose limit for which we can approach the $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ sector. Finally, we find a new Giant Magnon solution in the $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ sector corresponding to one magnon in each $SU(2)$. We put these results together to find the full magnon dispersion relation and we compare this to recently found results for ABJM theory at weak coupling.

Finite size Giant Magnons in the string dual of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory

We find the exact solution for a finite size Giant Magnon in the $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ sector of the string dual of the $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal Chern-Simons theory recently constructed by Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena. The finite size Giant Magnon solution consists of two magnons, one in each $SU(2)$. In the infinite size limit this solution corresponds to the Giant Magnon solution of arXiv:0806.4959. The magnon dispersion relation exhibits finite-size exponential corrections with respect to the infinite size limit solution.

The Hagedorn temperature in a decoupled sector of AdS/CFT

We match the Hagedorn/deconfinement temperature of planar N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) on R x S^3 to the Hagedorn temperature of string theory on AdS_5 x S^5. The match is done in a near-critical region where both gauge theory and string theory are weakly coupled. On the gauge theory side we are taking a decoupling limit found in hep-th/0605234 in which the physics of planar N=4 SYM is given exactly by the ferromagnetic XXX_{1/2} Heisenberg spin chain. We find moreover a general relation between the Hagedorn/deconfinement temperature and the thermodynamics of the Heisenberg spin chain. On the string theory side, we identify the dual limit which is taken of string theory on a maximally symmetric pp-wave background with a flat direction, obtained from a Penrose limit of AdS_5 x S^5. We compute the Hagedorn temperature of the string theory and find agreement with the Hagedorn/deconfinement temperature computed on the gauge theory side. Finally, we discuss a modified decoupling limit in which planar N=4 SYM reduces to the XXX_{1/2} Heisenberg spin chain with an external magnetic field.

Magnetic Heisenberg-chain/pp-wave correspondence

We find a decoupling limit of planar N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) on R x S^3 in which it becomes equivalent to the ferromagnetic XXX_{1/2} Heisenberg spin chain in an external magnetic field. The decoupling limit generalizes the one found in hep-th/0605234 corresponding to the case with zero magnetic field. The presence of the magnetic field is seen to break the degeneracy of the vacuum sector and it has a non-trivial effect on the low energy spectrum. We find a general connection between the Hagedorn temperature of planar N=4 SYM on R x S^3 in the decoupling limit and the thermodynamics of the Heisenberg chain. This is used to study the Hagedorn temperature for small and large value of the effective coupling. We consider the dual decoupling limit of type IIB strings on AdS_5 x S^5. We find a Penrose limit compatible with the decoupling limit that gives a magnetic pp-wave background. The breaking of the symmetry by the magnetic field on the gauge theory side is seen to have a geometric counterpart in the derivation of the Penrose limit. We take the decoupling limit of the pp-wave spectrum and succesfully match the resulting spectrum to the low energy spectrum on the gauge theory side. This enables us to match the Hagedorn temperature of the pp-wave to the Hagedorn temperature of the gauge theory for large effective coupling. This generalizes the results of hep-th/0608115 to the case of non-zero magnetic field.

The Phase Structure of Higher-Dimensional Black Rings and Black Holes

We construct an approximate solution for an asymptotically flat, neutral, thin rotating black ring in any dimension D>=5 by matching the near-horizon solution for a bent boosted black string, to a linearized gravity solution away from the horizon. The rotating black ring solution has a regular horizon of topology S^1 x S^{D-3} and incorporates the balancing condition of the ring as a zero-tension condition. For D=5 our method reproduces the thin ring limit of the exact black ring solution. For D>=6 we show that the black ring has a higher entropy than the Myers-Perry black hole in the ultra-spinning regime. By exploiting the correspondence between ultra-spinning black holes and black membranes on a two-torus, we take steps towards qualitatively completing the phase diagram of rotating blackfolds with a single angular momentum. We are led to propose a connection between MP black holes and black rings, and between MP black holes and black Saturns, through merger transitions involving two kinds of `pinched' black holes. More generally, the analogy suggests an infinite number of pinched black holes of spherical topology leading to a complicated pattern of connections and mergers between phases.

Instabilities of Black Strings and Branes

We review recent progress on the instabilities of black strings and branes both for pure Einstein gravity as well as supergravity theories which are relevant for string theory. We focus mainly on Gregory-Laflamme instabilities. In the first part of the review we provide a detailed discussion of the classical gravitational instability of the neutral uniform black string in higher dimensional gravity. The uniform black string is part of a larger phase diagram of Kaluza-Klein black holes which will be discussed thoroughly. This phase diagram exhibits many interesting features including new phases, non-uniqueness and horizon-topology changing transitions. In the second part, we turn to charged black branes in supergravity and show how the Gregory-Laflamme instability of the neutral black string implies via a boost/U-duality map similar instabilities for non- and near-extremal smeared branes in string theory. We also comment on instabilities of D-brane bound states. The connection between classical and thermodynamic stability, known as the correlated stability conjecture, is also reviewed and illustrated with examples. Finally, we examine the holographic implications of the Gregory-Laflamme instability for a number of non-gravitational theories including Yang-Mills theories and Little String Theory.

Decoupling limits of N=4 super Yang-Mills on R x S^3

We find new decoupling limits of N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) on R x S^3 with gauge group SU(N). These decoupling limits lead to decoupled theories that are much simpler than the full N=4 SYM but still contain many of its interesting features. The decoupling limits correspond to being in a near-critical region, near a point with zero temperature and critical chemical potentials. The new decoupling limits are found by generalizing the limits of hep-th/0605234 to include not only the chemical potentials for the SU(4) R-symmetry of N=4 SYM but also the chemical potentials corresponding to the SO(4) symmetry. In the decoupled theories it is possible to take a strong coupling limit in a controllable manner since the full effective Hamiltonian is known. For planar N=4 SYM on R x S^3 all the decoupled theories correspond to fully integrable spin chains. We study the thermodynamics of the decoupled theories and find the Hagedorn temperature for small and large values of the effective coupling. We find an alternative formulation of the decoupling limits in the microcanonical ensemble. This leads to a characterization of certain regimes of weakly coupled N=4 SYM in which there are string-like states. Finally, we find a similar decoupling limit for pure Yang-Mills theory, which for the planar limit leads to a fully integrable decoupled theory.

Multi-black hole configurations on the cylinder

We construct the metric of new multi-black hole configurations on a d-dimensional cylinder R^{d-1} x S^1, in the limit of small total mass (or equivalently in the limit of a large cylinder). These solutions are valid to first order in the total mass and describe configurations with several small black holes located at different points along the circle direction of the cylinder. We explain that a static configuration of black holes is required to be in equilibrium such that the external force on each black hole is zero, and we examine the resulting conditions. The first-order corrected thermodynamics of the solutions is obtained and a Newtonian interpretation of it is given. We then study the consequences of the multi-black hole configurations for the phase structure of static Kaluza-Klein black holes and show that our new solutions imply continuous non-uniqueness in the phase diagram. The new multi-black hole configurations raise the question of existence of new non-uniform black strings. Finally, a further analysis of the three-black hole configuration suggests the possibility of a new class of static lumpy black holes in Kaluza-Klein space.

Greybody Factors for d-Dimensional Black Holes

Gravitational greybody factors are analytically computed for static, spherically symmetric black holes in d-dimensions, including black holes with charge and in the presence of a cosmological constant (where a proper definition of greybody factors for both asymptotically dS and AdS spacetimes is provided). This calculation includes both the low-energy case --where the frequency of the scattered wave is small and real-- and the asymptotic case --where the frequency of the scattered wave is very large along the imaginary axis-- addressing gravitational perturbations as described by the Ishibashi-Kodama master equations, and yielding full transmission and reflection scattering coefficients for all considered spacetime geometries. At low frequencies a general method is developed, which can be employed for all three types of spacetime asymptotics, and which is independent of the details of the black hole. For asymptotically dS black holes the greybody factor is different for even or odd spacetime dimension, and proportional to the ratio of the areas of the event and cosmological horizons. For asymptotically AdS black holes the greybody factor has a rich structure in which there are several critical frequencies where it equals either one (pure transmission) or zero (pure reflection, with these frequencies corresponding to the normal modes of pure AdS spacetime). At asymptotic frequencies the computation of the greybody factor uses a technique inspired by monodromy matching, and some universality is hidden in the transmission and reflection coefficients. For either charged or asymptotically dS black holes the greybody factors are given by non-trivial functions, while for asymptotically AdS black holes the greybody factor precisely equals one (corresponding to pure blackbody emission).

Entropy of Three-Charge Black Holes on a Circle

We study phases of five-dimensional three-charge black holes with a circle in their transverse space. In particular, when the black hole is localized on the circle we compute the corrections to the metric and corresponding thermodynamics in the limit of small mass. When taking the near-extremal limit, this gives the corrections to the finite entropy of the extremal three-charge black hole as a function of the energy above extremality. For the partial extremal limit with two charges sent to infinity and one finite we show that the first correction to the entropy is in agreement with the microscopic entropy by taking into account that the number of branes shift as a consequence of the interactions across the transverse circle.

Three-Charge Black Holes on a Circle

We study phases of five-dimensional three-charge black holes with a circle in their transverse space. In particular, when the black hole is localized on the circle we compute the corrections to the metric and corresponding thermodynamics in the limit of small mass. When taking the near-extremal limit, this gives the corrections to the constant entropy of the extremal three-charge black hole as a function of the energy above extremality. For the partial extremal limit with two charges sent to infinity and one finite we show that the first correction to the entropy is in agreement with the microscopic entropy by taking into account that the number of branes shift as a consequence of the interactions across the transverse circle. Beyond these analytical results, we also numerically obtain the entire phase of non- and near-extremal three- and two-charge black holes localized on a circle. More generally, we find in this paper a rich phase structure, including a new phase of three-charge black holes that are non-uniformly distributed on the circle. All these three-charge black hole phases are found via a map that relates them to the phases of five-dimensional neutral Kaluza-Klein black holes.

Matching the Hagedorn temperature in AdS/CFT

We match the Hagedorn/deconfinement temperature of planar N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) on R x S^3 to the Hagedorn temperature of string theory on AdS_5 x S^5. The match is done in a near-critical region where both gauge theory and string theory are weakly coupled. The near-critical region is near a point with zero temperature and critical chemical potential. On the gauge theory side we are taking a decoupling limit found in hep-th/0605234 in which the physics of planar N=4 SYM is given exactly by the ferromagnetic XXX_{1/2} Heisenberg spin chain. We find moreover a general relation between the Hagedorn/deconfinement temperature and the thermodynamics of the Heisenberg spin chain and we use this to compute it in two distinct regimes. On the string theory side, we identify the dual limit for which the string tension and string coupling go to zero. This limit is taken of string theory on a maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background with a flat direction, obtained from a Penrose limit of AdS_5 x S^5. We compute the Hagedorn temperature of the string theory and find agreement with the Hagedorn/deconfinement temperature computed on the gauge theory side.

Stable Non-Supersymmetric Vacua in the Moduli Space of Non-Critical Superstrings

We study a set of asymmetric deformations of non-critical superstring theories in various dimensions. The deformations arise as Kaehler and complex structure deformations of an orthogonal two-torus comprising of a parallel and a transverse direction in the near-horizon geometry of NS5-branes. The resulting theories have the following intriguing features: Spacetime supersymmetry is broken in a continuous fashion and the masses of the lightest modes are lifted. In particular, no bulk or localized tachyons are generated in the non-supersymmetric vacua. We discuss the effects of these deformations in the context of the holographic duality between non-critical superstrings and Little String Theories and find solutions of rotating fivebranes in supergravity. We also comment on the generation of a one-loop cosmological constant and determine the effects of the one-loop backreaction to leading order.

Quantum Mechanical Sectors in Thermal N=4 Super Yang-Mills on RxS^3

We study the thermodynamics of U(N) N=4 Super Yang-Mills (SYM) on RxS^3 with non-zero chemical potentials for the SU(4) R-symmetry. We find that when we are near a point with zero temperature and critical chemical potential, N=4 SYM on RxS^3 reduces to a quantum mechanical theory. We identify three such critical regions giving rise to three different quantum mechanical theories. Two of them have a Hilbert space given by the SU(2) and SU(2|3) sectors of N=4 SYM of recent interest in the study of integrability, while the third one is the half-BPS sector dual to bubbling AdS geometries. In the planar limit the three quantum mechanical theories can be seen as spin chains. In particular, we identify a near-critical region in which N=4 SYM on RxS^3 essentially reduces to the ferromagnetic XXX_{1/2} Heisenberg spin chain. We find furthermore a limit in which this relation becomes exact.

On the Structure of Stationary and Axisymmetric Metrics

We study the structure of stationary and axisymmetric metrics solving the vacuum Einstein equations of General Relativity in four and higher dimensions, building on recent work in hep-th/0408141. We write the Einstein equations in a new form that naturally identifies the sources for such metrics. The sources live in a one-dimensional subspace and the entire metric is uniquely determined by them. We study in detail the structure of stationary and axisymmetric metrics in four dimensions, and consider as an example the sources of the Kerr black hole.
