C*-simplicity of free products with amalgamation and radical classes of groups

We give new characterizations to ensure that a free product of groups with amalgamation has a simple reduced group C*-algebra, and provide a concrete example of an amalgam with trivial kernel, such that its reduced group C*-algebra has a unique tracial state, but is not simple. Moreover, we show that there is a radical class of groups for which the reduced group C*-algebra of any group is simple precisely when the group has a trivial radical corresponding to this class.

On reduced twisted group C*-algebras that are simple and/or have a unique trace

We study the problem of determining when the reduced twisted group C*-algebra associated with a discrete group G is simple and/or has a unique tracial state, and present new sufficient conditions for this to hold. One of our main tools is a combinatorial property, that we call the relative Kleppner condition, which ensures that a quotient group G/H acts by freely acting automorphisms on the twisted group von Neumann algebra associated to a normal subgroup H. We apply our results to different types of groups, e.g. wreath products and Baumslag-Solitar groups.

$C^*$-algebras generated by projective representations of free nilpotent groups

We compute the two-cocycles (or multipliers) of the free nilpotent groups of class $2$ and rank $n$ and give conditions for simplicity of the corresponding twisted group $C^*$-algebras. These groups are representation groups for $\mathbb{Z}^n$ and can be considered as a family of generalized Heisenberg groups with higher-dimensional center. Their group $C^*$-algebras are in a natural way isomorphic to continuous fields over $\mathbb{T}^{\frac{1}{2}n(n-1)}$ with the noncommutative $n$-tori as fibers. In this way, the twisted group $C^*$-algebras associated with the free nilpotent groups of class $2$ and rank $n$ may be thought of as "second order" noncommutative $n$-tori.

On the K-theory of C*-algebras arising from integral dynamics

We investigate the $K$-theory of unital UCT Kirchberg algebras $\mathcal{Q}_S$ arising from families $S$ of relatively prime numbers. It is shown that $K_*(\mathcal{Q}_S)$ is the direct sum of a free abelian group and a torsion group, each of which is realized by another distinct $C^*$-algebra naturally associated to $S$. The $C^*$-algebra representing the torsion part is identified with a natural subalgebra $\mathcal{A}_S$ of $\mathcal{Q}_S$. For the $K$-theory of $\mathcal{Q}_S$, the cardinality of $S$ determines the free part and is also relevant for the torsion part, for which the greatest common divisor $g_S$ of $\{p-1 : p \in S\}$ plays a central role as well. In the case where $\lvert S \rvert \leq 2$ or $g_S=1$ we obtain a complete classification for $\mathcal{Q}_S$. Our results support the conjecture that $\mathcal{A}_S$ coincides with $\otimes_{p \in S} \mathcal{O}_p$. This would lead to a complete classification of $\mathcal{Q}_S$, and is related to a conjecture about $k$-graphs.

Dualities for maximal coactions

We present a new construction of crossed-product duality for maximal coactions that uses Fischer's work on maximalizations. Given a group $G$ and a coaction $(A,δ)$ we define a generalized fixed-point algebra as a certain subalgebra of $M(A\rtimes_δ G \rtimes_{\widehatδ} G)$, and recover the coaction via this double crossed product. Our goal is to formulate this duality in a category-theoretic context, and one advantage of our construction is that it breaks down into parts that are easy to handle in this regard. We first explain this for the category of nondegenerate *-homomorphisms, and then analogously for the category of $C^*$-correspondences. Also, we outline partial results for the "outer" category, studied previously by the authors.

Three versions of categorical crossed-product duality

In this partly expository paper we compare three different categories of C*-algebras in which crossed-product duality can be formulated, both for actions and for coactions of locally compact groups. In these categories, the isomorphisms correspond to C*-algebra isomorphisms, imprimitivity bimodules, and outer conjugacies, respectively. In each case, a variation of the fixed-point functor that arises from classical Landstad duality is used to obtain a quasi-inverse for a crossed-product functor. To compare the various cases, we describe in a formal way our view of the fixed-point functor as an "inversion" of the process of forming a crossed product. In some cases, we obtain what we call "good" inversions, while in others we do not. For the outer-conjugacy categories, we generalize a theorem of Pedersen to obtain a fixed-point functor that is quasi-inverse to the reduced-crossed-product functor for actions, and we show that this gives a good inversion. For coactions, we prove a partial version of Pedersen's theorem that allows us to define a fixed-point functor, but the question of whether it is a quasi-inverse for the crossed-product functor remains open.

Cuntz-Li algebras from a-adic numbers

The a-adic numbers are those groups that arise as Hausdorff completions of noncyclic subgroups of the rational numbers. We give a crossed product construction of (stabilized) Cuntz-Li algebras coming from the a-adic numbers and investigate the structure of the associated algebras. In particular, these algebras are in many cases Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class. Moreover, we prove an a-adic duality theorem, which links a Cuntz-Li algebra with a corresponding dynamical system on the real numbers. The paper also contains an appendix where a nonabelian version of the "subgroup of dual group theorem" is given in the setting of coactions.

Destabilization

This partly expository paper first supplies the details of a method of factoring a stable C*-algebra A as B \otimes K in a canonical way. Then it is shown that this method can be put into a categorical framework, much like the crossed-product dualities, and that stabilization gives rise to an equivalence between the nondegenerate category of C*-algebras and a category of "K-algebras". We consider this equivalence as "inverting" the stabilization process, that is, a "destabilization". Furthermore, the method of factoring stable C*-algebras generalizes to Hilbert bimodules, and an analogous category equivalence between the associated enchilada categories is produced, giving a destabilization for C*-correspondences. Finally, we make a connection with (double) crossed-product duality.

On twisted group C$^*$-algebras associated with FC-hypercentral groups and other related groups

We show that the twisted group C$^*$-algebra associated with a discrete FC-hypercentral group is simple (resp. has a unique tracial state) if and only if Kleppner's condition is satisfied. This generalizes a result of J. Packer for countable nilpotent groups. We also consider a larger class of groups, for which we can show that the corresponding reduced twisted group C$^*$-algebras have a unique tracial state if and only if Kleppner's condition holds.

The full group C*-algebra of the modular group is primitive

We show that the full group C$^*$-algebra of $PSL(n, \Z)$ is primitive when $n=2$, and not primitive when $n\geq 3$. Moreover, we show that there exists an uncountable family of pairwise inequivalent, faithful irreducible representations of $C^*(PSL(2,\Z))$.

Primitivity of some full group C$^*$-algebras

We show that the full group C$^*$-algebra of the free product of two nontrivial countable amenable discrete groups, where at least one of them has more than two elements, is primitive. We also show that in many cases, this C$^*$-algebra is antiliminary and has an uncountable family of pairwise inequivalent, faithful irreducible representations.
