Preservation of F-convexity under the heat flow

We introduce the notion of F-convexity as a general extension of power convexity. We characterize the F-convexities preserved under the heat flow in the n-dimensional Euclidean space, and identify the strongest and the weakest ones among them. We also characterize the F-convexities preserved under the Dirichlet heat flow in convex domains.

Rigidity of weighted manifolds via classification results for semilinear equations

We study model semilinear equations on complete and non-compact weighted Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Bakry-\'Emery Ricci curvature. Our main goal is to classify positive solutions of the equation at the Sobolev-critical exponent, and furthermore to prove that the existence of such solutions implies rigidity of the manifold and triviality of the weight. This is possible when the weighted manifold has non-negative finite dimensional Bakry-\'Emery Ricci curvature, and even under the weaker condition of non-negative infinite dimensional Bakry-\'Emery Ricci curvature, up to imposing some additional conditions in the latter case. To exhibit the sharpness of these additional conditions, we construct a non-trivial positive solution of the critical problem on a weighted manifold with positive infinite dimensional curvature. We also obtain a corresponding rigidity result for solutions of the Liouville equation on weighted Riemannian surfaces. Finally, we prove some non-existence theorems when the nonlinearity is sub-critical or simply under certain volume growth conditions. In particular, the latter rules out all positive solutions on shrinking gradient Ricci solitons.

A porous medium equation with rough weights: sharp Widder theory

We establish an optimal \emph{Widder theory} for a weighted porous medium equation with rough and inhomogeneous density that may be singular at a point and tends to zero at spatial infinity. Specifically, for this equation, we identify a class $X$ of initial measure data that give rise to very weak solutions, we show that non-negative very weak solutions necessarily admit an initial trace in $X$ at time $t=0$, and we prove that any two non-negative solutions having the same initial trace are equal. The corresponding theory for the classical (unweighted) equation was established by exploiting various properties that are not available in our weighted setting, such as the continuity of solutions, the explicit scale invariance of the equation, Aleksandrov's reflection principle, and the Aronson--B\'enilan inequality. Therefore, to complete the Widder theory, we must devise several proofs by means of entirely new methods. We also establish an optimal quantitative \emph{a priori} smoothing estimate for unsigned local solutions without resorting to scale invariance, which seems to be new in this form even for the classical porous medium equation. Finally, we show that non-negative very weak solutions are always locally bounded, and in particular that they have locally finite energy.

An inhomogeneous porous medium equation with non-integrable data: asymptotics

We investigate the asymptotic behavior as $t\to+\infty$ of solutions to a weighted porous medium equation in $ \mathbb{R}^N $, whose weight $ρ(x)$ behaves at spatial infinity like $ |x|^{-γ} $ with subcritical power, namely $ γ\in [0,2) $. Inspired by some results by Alikakos-Rostamian and Kamin-Ughi from the 1980s on the unweighted problem, we focus on solutions whose initial data $u_0(x)$ are not globally integrable with respect to the weight and behave at infinity like $ |x|^{-α} $, for $α\in(0,N-γ)$. In the special case $ ρ(x)=|x|^{-γ} $ and $ u_0(x)=|x|^{-α} $ we show that self-similar solutions of Barenblatt type, i.e. reminiscent of the usual source-type solutions, still exist, although they are no longer compactly supported. Moreover, they exhibit a transition phenomenon which is new even for the unweighted equation. We prove that such self-similar solutions are attractors for the original problem, and convergence takes place globally in suitable weighted $ L^p $ spaces for $p\in[1,\infty)$ and even globally in $L^\infty$ under some mild additional regularity assumptions on the weight. Among the fundamental tools that we exploit, it is worth mentioning a global smoothing effect for non-integrable data.

An inhomogeneous porous medium equation with large data: well-posedness

We study solutions of a Euclidean weighted porous medium equation when the weight behaves at spacial infinity like $|x|^{-γ}$, for $γ\in [0,2)$, and is allowed to be singular at the origin. In particular we show local-in-time existence and uniqueness for a class of large initial data which includes as "endpoints" those growing at a rate of $ |x|^{(2-γ)/(m-1)}$, in a weighted $L^1$-average sense. We also identify global-existence and blow-up classes, whose respective forms strongly support the claim that such a growth rate is optimal, at least for positive solutions. As a crucial step in our existence proof we establish a local smoothing effect for large data without resorting to the classical Aronson-Bénilan inequality and using the Bénilan-Crandall inequality instead, which may be of independent interest since the latter holds in much more general settings.
