Rational Convolution Roots of Isobaric Polynomials

In this paper, we exhibit two matrix representations of the rational roots of generalized Fibonacci polynomials (GFPs) under convolution product, in terms of determinants and permanents, respectively. The underlying root formulas for GFPs and for weighted isobaric polynomials (WIPs), which appeared in an earlier paper by MacHenry and Tudose, make use of two types of operators. These operators are derived from the generating functions for Stirling numbers of the first kind and second kind. Hence we call them Stirling operators. To construct matrix representations of the roots of GFPs, we use the Stirling operators of the first kind. We give explicit examples to show how the Stirling operators of the second kind appear in the low degree cases for the WIP-roots. As a consequence of the matrix construction, we have matrix representations of multiplicative arithmetic functions under the Dirichlet product into its divisible closure.

Permanents, Determinants, Weighted Isobaric Polynomials and Integer Sequences

In this paper we construct two types of Hessenberg matrices with the properties that every weighted isobaric polynomial (WIP) appears as a determinant of one of them, and as the permanent of the other. Every integer sequence which is linearly recurrent is representable by (an evaluation of) some linearly recurrent sequence of WIPs. WIPs are symmetric polynomials written on the elementary symmetric polynomial basis. Among them are the generalized Fibonacci polynomials and the generalized Lucas polynomials, which already have these sweeping representing properties. Among the integer sequences discussed are the Chebychev polynomials of the 2nd kind, the Stirling numbers of the 1st and 2nd kind, the Catalan numbers, and the triangular numbers, as well as all sequences which are either multiplicative arithmetic functions or additive arithmetic functions.

The Convolution Ring of Arithmetic Functions and Symmetric Polynomials

Inspired by Rearick (1968), we introduce two new operators, LOG and EXP. The LOG operates on generalized Fibonacci polynomials giving generalized Lucas polynomials. The EXP is the inverse of LOG. In particular, LOG takes a convolution product of generalized Fibonacci polynomials to a sum of generalized Lucas polynomials and EXP takes the sum to the convolution product. We use this structure to produce a theory of logarithms and exponentials within arithmetic functions giving another proof of the fact that the group of multiplicative functions under convolution product is isomorphic to the group of additive functions under addition. The hyperbolic trigonometric functions are constructed from the EXP operator, again, in the usual way. The usual hyperbolic trigonometric identities hold. We exhibit new structure and identities in the isobaric ring. Given a monic polynomial, its infinite companion matrix can be embedded in the group of weighted isobaric polynomials. The derivative of the monic polynomial and its companion matrix give us the different matrix and the infinite different matrix. The determinant of the different matrix is the discriminate of the monic polynomial up to sign. In fact, the LOG operating on the infinite companion matrix is the infinite different matrix. We prove that an arithmetic function is locally representable if an only if it is a multiplicative function. An arithmetic function is both locally and globally representable if it is trivially globally represented.

Degree k Linear Recursions Mod(p)

Linear recursions of degree $k$ are determined by evaluating the sequence of Generalized Fibonacci Polynomials, $\{F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k)\}$ (isobaric reflects of the complete symmetric polynomials) at the integer vectors $(t_1,...,t_k)$. If $F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k) = f_n$, then $$f_n - \sum_{j=1}^k t_j f_{n-j} = 0,$$ and $\{f_n\}$ is a linear recursion of degree $k$. On the one hand, the periodic properties of such sequences modulo a prime $p$ are discussed, and are shown to be rela ted to the prime structure of certain algebraic number fields; for example, the arithmetic properties of the period ar e shown to characterize ramification of primes in an extension field. On the other hand, the structure of the semiloca l rings associated with the number field is shown to be completely determined by Schur-hook polynomials.

A Representation of Multiplicative Arithmetic Functions by Symmetric Polynomials

We give a representation of the classical theory of multiplicative arithmetic functions (MF)in the ring of symmetric polynomials. The basis of the ring of symmetric polynomials that we use is the isobaric basis, a basis especially sensitive to the combinatorics of partitions of the integers. The representing elements are recursive sequences of Schur polynomials evaluated at subrings of the complex numbers. The multiplicative arithmetic functions are units in the Dirichlet ring of arithmetic functions, and their properties can be described locally, that is, at each prime number $p$. Our representation is, hence, a local representation. One such representing sequence is the sequence of generalized Fibonacci polynomials. In general the sequences consist of Schur-hook polynomials. This representation enables us to clarify and generalize classical results, e.g., the Busche-Ramanujan identity, as well as to give a richer structural description of the convolution group of multiplicative functions. It is a consequence of the representation that the MF's can be defined in a natural way on the negative powers of the prime $p$.

Degree-k linear recursions mod(p) and number fields

Linear recursions of degree $k$ are determined by evaluating the sequence of Generalized Fibonacci Polynomials, $\{F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k)\}$ (isobaric reflects of the complete symmetric polynomials) at the integer vectors $(t_1,...,t_k)$. If $F_{k,n}(t_1,...,t_k) = f_n$, then $$f_n - \sum_{j=1}^k t_j f_{n-j} = 0,$$ and $\{f_n\}$ is a linear recursion of degree $k$. On the one hand, the periodic properties of such sequences modulo a prime $p$ are discussed, and are shown to be related to the prime structure of certain algebraic number fields; for example, the arithmetic properties of the period are shown to characterize ramification of primes in an extension field. On the other hand, the structure of the semilocal rings associated with the number field is shown to be completely determined by Schur-hook polynomials. Keywords: Symmetric polynomials, Schur polynomials, linear recursions, number fields.

Differential Operators and Weighted Isobaric Polynomials

We characterize those sequences of weighted isobaric polynomials as defined in math.CO/0106213 which belong to the kernel of the linear operator $D_{11} - \sum_{j=1}^k a_j t_j D_{2j} - mD_2$, and we characterize those linear operators of this form in terms of the coefficients $a_j$ which have a non-zero kernel.

Reflections on symmetric polynomials and arithmetic functions

In an isomorphic copy of the ring of symmetric polynomials we study some families of polynomials which are indexed by rational weight vectors. These families include well known symmetric polynomials, such as the elementary, homogeneous, and power sum symmetric polynomials. We investigate properties of these families and focus on constructing their rational roots under a product induced by convolution. A direct application of the latter is to the description of the roots of certain multiplicative arithmetic functions (the core functions) under the convolution product.
