Toward Practical Forecasts of Public Sentiments via Convexification for Mean Field Games: Evidence from Real World COVID-19 Discussion Data

We apply a convexification-based numerical method to forecast public sentiment dynamics using Mean Field Games (MFGs). The theoretical foundation for the convexification approach, established in our prior work, guarantees global convergence to the unique solution to the MFG system. The present work demonstrates the practical potential of this framework using real-world sentiment data extracted from social media public discussion during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results show that the MFG model with appropriate parameters and convexification yields sentiment density predictions that align closely with observed data and satisfy the governing equations. While current parameter selection relies on manual calibration, our findings establish the first proof-of-concept evidence that MFG models can capture complex temporal patterns in public sentiment, laying the groundwork for future work on systematic parameter identification methods, i.e. solutions of coefficient inverse problems for the MFG system.

Forecasting Public Sentiments via Mean Field Games

Motivated by the goal of forecasting public sentiments, we consider a forecasting problem in the context of the Mean Field Games theory. We develop a numerical method, which is a version of the so-called convexification method. We provide theoretical convergence analysis that establishes global convergence of the method with a convergence rate. We also conduct numerical experiments that demonstrate the accurate performance of the convexification technique and highlight some promising features of this approach.

The Carleman Contraction Mapping Method for a Coefficient Inverse Problem of the Epidemiology

It is proposed to monitor spatial and temporal spreads of epidemics via solution of a Coefficient Inverse Problem for a system of three coupled nonlinear parabolic equations. To solve this problem numerically, a version of the so-called Carleman contraction mapping method is developed for this problem. On each iteration, a linear problem with the incomplete lateral Cauchy data is solved by the weighted Quasi-Reversibility Method, where the weight is the Carleman Weight Function. This is the function, which is involved as the weight in the Carleman estimate for the corresponding parabolic operator. Convergence analysis ensures the global convergence of this procedure. Numerical results demonstrate an accurate performance of this technique for noisy data.

A stable imaging functional for anisotropic periodic media in electromagnetic inverse scattering

The paper is concerned with the inverse scattering problem for Maxwell's equations in three dimensional anisotropic periodic media. We study a new imaging functional for fast and stable reconstruction of the shape of anisotropic periodic scatterers from boundary measurements of the scattered field for a number of incident fields. This imaging functional is simple to implement and very robust against noise in the data. Its implementation is non-iterative, computationally cheap, and does not involve solving any ill-posed problems. The resolution and stability analysis of the imaging functional is investigated. Our numerical study shows that this imaging functional is more stable than that of the factorization method and more efficient than that of the orthogonality sampling method in reconstructing periodic scatterers.

On the numerical solution to an inverse medium problem

This paper is concerned with the inverse medium problem of determining the location and shape of penetrable scattering objects from measurements of the scattered field. We study a sampling indicator function for recovering the scattering object in a fast and robust way. A flexibility of this indicator function is that it is applicable to data measured in near-field regime or far-field regime. The implementation of the function is simple and does not involve solving any ill-posed problems. The resolution analysis and stability estimate of the indicator function are investigated using the factorization analysis of the far-field operator along with the Funk-Hecke formula. The performance of the method is verified on both simulated and experimental data.

A new sampling indicator function for stable imaging of periodic scattering media

This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of determining the shape of penetrable periodic scatterers from scattered field data. We propose a sampling method with a novel indicator function for solving this inverse problem. This indicator functionl is very simple to implement and robust against noise in the data. The resolution and stability analysis of the indicator function is analyzed. Our numerical study shows that the proposed sampling method is more stable than the factorization method and more efficient than the direct or orthogonality sampling method in reconstructing periodic scatterers.

Sampling type method combined with deep learning for inverse scattering with one incident wave

We consider the inverse problem of determining the geometry of penetrable objects from scattering data generated by one incident wave at a fixed frequency. We first study an orthogonality sampling type method which is fast, simple to implement, and robust against noise in the data. This sampling method has a new imaging functional that is applicable to data measured in near field or far field regions. The resolution analysis of the imaging functional is analyzed where the explicit decay rate of the functional is established. A connection with the orthogonality sampling method by Potthast is also studied. The sampling method is then combined with a deep neural network to solve the inverse scattering problem. This combined method can be understood as a network using the image computed by the sampling method for the first layer and followed by the U-net architecture for the rest of the layers. The fast computation and the knowledge from the results of the sampling method help speed up the training of the network. The combination leads to a significant improvement in the reconstruction results initially obtained by the sampling method. The combined method is also able to invert some limited aperture experimental data without any additional transfer training.

The Carleman-based contraction principle to reconstruct the potential of nonlinear hyperbolic equations

We develop an efficient and convergent numerical method for solving the inverse problem of determining the potential of nonlinear hyperbolic equations from lateral Cauchy data. In our numerical method we construct a sequence of linear Cauchy problems whose corresponding solutions converge to a function that can be used to efficiently compute an approximate solution to the inverse problem of interest. The convergence analysis is established by combining the contraction principle and Carleman estimates. We numerically solve the linear Cauchy problems using a quasi-reversibility method. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the method.

Imaging of bi-anisotropic periodic structures from electromagnetic near field data

This paper is concerned with the inverse scattering problem for the three-dimensional Maxwell's equations in bi-anisotropic periodic structures. The inverse scattering problem aims to determine the shape of bi-anisotropic periodic scatterers from electromagnetic near field data at a fixed frequency. The Factorization method is studied as an analytical and numerical tool for solving the inverse problem. We provide a rigorous justification of the Factorization method which results in the unique determination and a fast imaging algorithm for the periodic scatterer. Numerical examples for imaging three-dimensional periodic structures are presented to examine the efficiency of the method.

Convexification numerical algorithm for a 2D inverse scattering problem with backscatter data

This paper is concerned with the inverse scattering problem which aims to determine the spatially distributed dielectric constant coefficient of the 2D Helmholtz equation from multifrequency backscatter data associated with a single direction of the incident plane wave. We propose a globally convergent convexification numerical algorithm to solve this nonlinear and ill-posed inverse problem. The key advantage of our method over conventional optimization approaches is that it does not require a good first guess about the solution. First, we eliminate the coefficient from the Helmholtz equation using a change of variables. Next, using a truncated expansion with respect to a special Fourier basis, we approximately reformulate the inverse problem as a system of quasilinear elliptic PDEs, which can be numerically solved by a weighted quasi-reversibility approach. The cost functional for the weighted quasi-reversibility method is constructed as a Tikhonov-like functional that involves a Carleman Weight Function. Our numerical study shows that, using a version of the gradient descent method, one can find the minimizer of this Tikhonov-like functional without any advanced \emph{a priori} knowledge about it.

On the inverse scattering from anisotropic periodic layers and transmission eigenvalues

This paper is concerned with the inverse scattering and the transmission eigenvalues for anisotropic periodic layers. For the inverse scattering problem, we study the Factorization method for shape reconstruction of the periodic layers from near field scattering data. This method provides a fast numerical algorithm as well as a unique determination for the shape reconstruction of the scatterer. We present a rigorous justification and numerical examples for the factorization method. The transmission eigenvalue problem in scattering have recently attracted a lot of attentions. Transmission eigenvalues can be determined from scattering data and they can provide information about the material parameters of the scatterers. In this paper we formulate the interior transmission eigenvalue problem and prove the existence of infinitely many transmission eigenvalues for the scattering from anisotropic periodic layers.
