Local mass-conserving solution for a critical Coagulation-Fragmentation equation

The critical coagulation-fragmentation equation with multiplicative coagulation and constant fragmentation kernels is known to not have global mass-conserving solutions when the initial mass is greater than $1$. We show that for any given positive initial mass with finite second moment, there is a time $T^*>0$ such that the equation possesses a unique mass-conserving solution up to $T^*$. The novel idea is to singularly perturb the constant fragmentation kernel by small additive terms and study the limiting behavior of the solutions of the perturbed system via the Bernstein transform.

Bounds on the heat transfer rate via passive advection

In heat exchangers, an incompressible fluid is heated initially and cooled at the boundary. The goal is to transfer the heat to the boundary as efficiently as possible. In this paper we study a related steady version of this problem where a steadily stirred fluid is uniformly heated in the interior and cooled on the boundary. For a given large Péclet number, how should one stir to minimize some norm of the temperature? This version of the problem was previously studied by Marcotte, Doering et\ al.\ (SIAM Appl.\ Math '18) in a disk, where the authors used matched asymptotics to show that when the Péclet number, $\pe$, is sufficiently large one can stir the fluid in a manner that ensures the total heat is $O(1/\pe)$. In this paper we confirm their results with rigorous proofs, and also provide an almost matching lower bound. For simplicity, we work on the infinite strip instead of the unit disk and the proof uses probabilistic techniques.

Large time behavior for a Hamilton-Jacobi equation in a critical Coagulation-Fragmentation model

We study the large time behavior of the sublinear viscosity solution to a singular Hamilton-Jacobi equation that appears in a critical Coagulation-Fragmentation model with multiplicative coagulation and constant fragmentation kernels. Our results include complete characterizations of stationary solutions and optimal conditions to guarantee large time convergence. In particular, we obtain convergence results under certain natural conditions on the initial data, and a nonconvergence result when such conditions fail.

Coagulation-Fragmentation equations with multiplicative coagulation kernel and constant fragmentation kernel

We study a critical case of Coagulation-Fragmentation equations with multiplicative coagulation kernel and constant fragmentation kernel. Our method is based on the study of viscosity solutions to a new singular Hamilton-Jacobi equation, which results from applying the Bernstein transform to the original Coagulation-Fragmentation equation. Our results include wellposedness, regularity and long-time behaviors of viscosity solutions to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in certain regimes, which have implications to wellposedness and long-time behaviors of \emph{mass-conserving} solutions to the Coagulation-Fragmentation equation.

Existence of solitary waves in one dimensional peridynamics

We give a rigorous proof of existence for solitary waves of a peridynamics model in one space dimension recently investigated by Silling (J. Mech. Phys. Solids 96:121--132, 2016). We adapt the variational framework developed by Friesecke and Wattis (Comm. Math Phys. 161:391--418, 1994) for the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou lattice equations to treat a truncated problem which cuts off short-range interactions, then pass to the limit.
