Commutative Geometry for Non-commutative D-branes by Tachyon Condensation

There is a difficulty in defining the positions of the D-branes when the scalar fields on them are non-abelian. We show that we can use tachyon condensation to determine the position or the shape of D0-branes uniquely as a commutative region in spacetime together with non-trivial gauge flux on it, even if the scalar fields are non-abelian. We use the idea of the so-called coherent state method developed in the field of matrix models in the context of the tachyon condensation. We investigate configurations of noncommutative D2-brane made out of D0-branes as examples. In particular, we examine a Moyal plane and a fuzzy sphere in detail, and show that whose shapes are commutative $\mathbb{R}^2$ and $S^2$, respectively, equipped with uniform magnetic flux on them. We study the physical meaning of this commutative geometry made out of matrices, and propose an interpretation in terms of K-homology.

Spherical D-brane by Tachyon Condensation

We find a novel tachyon condensation which provides a D-brane system with spherical worldvolume in the flat spacetime. The tachyon profile is a deformation of a known D0-brane solution on non-BPS D3-branes in type IIA superstring theory, which realizes a bound state of a spherical D2-brane and a D0-brane. The D0-brane is resolved into the sphere as a $U(1)$ monopole flux of the unit magnetic charge. We show that the system has the correct tension and the RR-coupling. Although the low energy effective action of the system is the same as that of the dual description of the fuzzy sphere solution of multiple D0-branes, our system cannot be equivalent to the fuzzy sphere. We argue that the sphere can be stable in a certain RR-flux background. The use of projective modules in describing the tachyon condensation is emphasized.

Gravity theory on Poisson manifold with $R$-flux

A novel gravity theory based on Poisson Generalized Geometry is investigated. A gravity theory on a Poisson manifold equipped with a Riemannian metric is constructed from a contravariant version of the Levi-Civita connection, which is based on the Lie algebroid of a Poisson manifold. Then, we show that in Poisson Generalized Geometry the $R$-fluxes are consistently coupled with such a gravity. An $R$-flux appears as a torsion of the corresponding connection in a similar way as an $H$-flux which appears as a torsion of the connection for- mulated in the standard Generalized Geometry. We give an analogue of the Einstein-Hilbert action coupled with an $R$-flux, and show that it is invariant under both $β$-diffeomorphisms and $β$-gauge transformations.

Angles in Fuzzy Disc and Angular Noncommutative Solitons

The fuzzy disc, introduced by the authors of Ref.[1], is a disc-shaped region in a noncommutative plane, and is a fuzzy approximation of a commutative disc. In this paper we show that one can introduce a concept of angles to the fuzzy disc, by using the phase operator and phase states known in quantum optics. We gave a description of a fuzzy disc in terms of operators and their commutation relations, and studied properties of angular projection operators. A similar construction for a fuzzy annulus is also given. As an application, we constructed fan-shaped soliton solutions of a scalar field theory on a fuzzy disc, which corresponds to a fan-shaped D-brane. We also applied this concept to the theory of noncommutative gravity that we proposed in Ref.[2]. In addition, possible connections to black hole microstates, holography and an experimental test of noncommutativity by laser physics are suggested.

D-branes in Generalized Geometry and Dirac-Born-Infeld Action

The purpose of this paper is to formulate the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) action in a framework of generalized geometry and clarify its symmetry. A D-brane is defined as a Dirac structure where scalar fields and gauge field are treated on an equal footing in a static gauge. We derive generalized Lie derivatives corresponding to the diffeomorphism and B-field gauge transformations and show that the DBI action is invariant under non-linearly realized symmetries for all types of diffeomorphisms and B-field gauge transformations. Consequently, we can interpret not only the scalar field but also the gauge field on the D-brane as the generalized Nambu-Goldstone boson.

Boundary state analysis on the equivalence of T-duality and Nahm transformation in superstring theory

We investigated the equivalence of the T-duality for a bound state of D2 and D0-branes with the Nahm transformation of the corresponding gauge theory on a 2-dimensional torus, using the boundary state analysis in superstring theory. In contrast to the case of a 4-dimensional torus, it changes a sign in a topological charge, which seems puzzling when regarded as a D-brane charge. Nevertheless, it is shown that it agrees with the T-duality of the boundary state, including a minus sign. We reformulated boundary states in the RR-sector using a new representation of zeromodes, and show that the RR-coupling is invariant under the T-duality. Finally, the T-duality invariance at the level of the Chern-Simon coupling is shown by deriving the Buscher rule for the RR-potentials, known as the 'Hori formula', including the correct sign.

Twist Quantization of String and Hopf Algebraic Symmetry

We describe the twist quantization of string worldsheet theory, which unifies the description of quantization and the target space symmetry, based on the twisting of Hopf and module algebras. We formulate a method of decomposing a twist into successive twists to analyze the twisted Hopf and module algebra structure, and apply it to several examples, including finite twisted diffeomorphism and extra treatment for zero modes.

Noncommutative Solitons of Gravity

We investigate a three-dimensional gravitational theory on a noncommutative space which has a cosmological constant term only. We found various kinds of nontrivial solutions, by applying a similar technique which was used to seek noncommutative solitons in noncommutative scalar field theories. Some of those solutions correspond to bubbles of spacetimes, or represent dimensional reduction. The solution which interpolates $G_{μν}=0$ and Minkowski metric is also found. All solutions we obtained are non-perturbative in the noncommutative parameter $θ$, therefore they are different from solutions found in other contexts of noncommutative theory of gravity and would have a close relation to quantum gravity.

Twist Quantization of String and B Field Background

In a previous paper, we investigated the Hopf algebra structure in string theory and gave a unified formulation of the quantization of the string and the space-time symmetry. In this paper, this formulation is applied to the case with a nonzero B-field background, and the twist of the Poincare symmetry is studied. The Drinfeld twist accompanied by the B-field background gives an alternative quantization scheme, which requires a new normal ordering. In order to obtain a physical interpretation of this twisted Hopf algebra structure, we propose a method to decompose the twist into two successive twists and we give two different possibilities of decomposition. The first is a natural decomposition from the viewpoint of the twist quantization, leading to a new type of twisted Poincare symmetry. The second decomposition reveals the relation of our formulation to the twisted Poincare symmetry on the Moyal type noncommutative space.

Hopf Algebra Symmetry and String Theory

We investigate the Hopf algebra structure in string worldsheet theory and give a unified formulation of the quantization of string and the space-time symmetry. We reformulate the path integral quantization of string as a Drinfeld twist at the worldsheet level. The coboundary relation shows that the Drinfeld twist defines a module algebra which is equivalent to operators with normal ordering. Upon applying the twist, the space-time diffeomorphism is deformed into a twisted Hopf algebra, while the Poincaré symmetry is unchanged. This suggests a characterization of the symmetry: unbroken symmetries are twist invariant Hopf subalgebras, while broken symmetries are realized as twisted ones. We provide arguments that relate this twisted Hopf algebra to symmetries in path integral quantization.

Construction of Instantons via Tachyon Condensation

We investigate the D-brane bound states from the viewpoint of the unstable D/\bar{D}-system and their tachyon condensation. We consider two systems; a system of k D(-1)-branes and N D3-branes with open strings connecting them and a system of N D3-branes with open strings corresponding to the k-instanton flux, both of which are realized through the tachyon condensation from (N+2k) D3-branes and 2k \bar{D3}-branes with appropriate tachyon profiles. It can be shown that these systems are related with each other through a unitary gauge transformation of the D3/\bar{D3}-system. We construct an explicit form of the gauge transformation and show that the essential elements of the ADHM construction naturally arise from the explicit form of the gauge transformation. As a result, the ADHM construction is understood as an outcome of this gauge equivalence in different low energy limits. The small instanton singularities can be also understood in this context. Other kinds of solitons with different codimensions are also discussed from the view point of the tachyon condensation.

Excited D-branes and Supergravity Solutions

We investigate the general solution with the symmetry ISO(1,p)xSO(9-p) of Type II supergravity (the three-parameter solution) from the viewpoint of the superstring theory. We find that one of the three parameters (c_1) is closely related to the ``dilaton charge'' and the appearance of the dilaton charge is a consequence of deformations of the boundary condition from that of the boundary state for BPS D-branes. We give three examples of the deformed D-branes by considering the tachyon condensation from systems of D-\bar{D}p-branes, unstable D9-branes and unstable D-instantons to the BPS saturated Dp-branes, respectively. We argue that the deformed systems are generally regarded as tachyonic and/or massive excitations of the open strings on Dp-\bar{D}p-brane systems.

Open String Tachyon in Supergravity Solution

We study the tachyon condensation of the D-\bar{D}-brane system with a constant tachyon vev in the context of classical solutions of the Type II supergravity. We find that the general solution with the symmetry ISO(1,p)xSO(9-p) (the three-parameter solution) includes the extremal black p-brane solution as an appropriate limit of the solution with fixing one of the three parameters (c_1). Furthermore, we compare the long distance behavior of the solution with the massless modes of the closed strings from the boundary state of the D-\bar{D}-brane system with a constant tachyon vev. We find that we must fix c_1 to zero and the only two parameters are needed to express the tachyon condensation of the DD-brane system. This means that the parameter $c_1$ does not correspond to the tachyon vev of the DD-brane system.

Closed String Field Theory with Dynamical D-brane

We consider a closed string field theory with an arbitrary matter current as a source of the closed string field. We find that the source must satisfy a constraint equation as a consequence of the BRST invariance of the theory. We see that it corresponds to the covariant conservation law for the matter current, and the equation of motion together with this constraint equation determines the classical behavior of both the closed string field and the matter. We then consider the boundary state (D-brane) as an example of a source. We see that the ordinary boundary state cannot be a source of the closed string field when the string coupling g turns on. By perturbative expansion, we derive a recursion relation which represents the bulk backreaction and the D-brane recoil. We also make a comment on the rolling tachyon boundary state.

Exact Description of D-branes via Tachyon Condensation

We examine the fluctuations around a Dp-brane solution in an unstable D-brane system using boundary states and also boundary string field theory. We show that the fluctuations correctly reproduce the fields on the Dp-brane. Plugging these into the action of the unstable D-brane system, we recover not only the tension and RR charge, but also full effective action of the Dp-brane exactly. Our method works for general unstable D-brane systems and provides a simple proof of D-brane descent/ascent relations under the tachyon condensation. In the lowest dimensional unstable D-brane system, called K-matrix theory, D-branes are described in terms of operator algebra. We show the equivalence of the geometric and algebraic descriptions of a D-brane world-volume manifold using the equivalence between path integral and operator formulation of the boundary quantum mechanics. As a corollary, the Atiyah-Singer index theorem is naturally obtained by looking at the coupling to RR-fields. We also generalize the argument to type I string theory.

Noncommutative Gauge Theories from Deformation Quantization

We construct noncommutative gauge theories based on the notion of the Weyl bundle, which appears in Fedosov's construction of deformation quantization on an arbitrary symplectic manifold. These correspond to D-brane worldvolume theories in non-constant B-field and curved backgrounds in string theory. All such theories are embedded into a "universal" gauge theory of the Weyl bundle. This shows that the combination of a background field and a noncommutative field strength has universal meaning as a field strength of the Weyl bundle. We also show that the gauge equivalence relation is a part of such a "universal" gauge symmetry.

Comments on Gauge Equivalence in Noncommutative Geometry

We investigate the transformation from ordinary gauge field to noncommutative one which was introduced by N.Seiberg and E.Witten (hep-th/9908142). It is shown that the general transformation which is determined only by gauge equivalence has a path dependence in `θ-space'. This ambiguity is negligible when we compare the ordinary Dirac-Born-Infeld action with the noncommutative one in the U(1) case, because of the U(1) nature and slowly varying field approximation. However, in general, in the higher derivative approximation or in the U(N) case, the ambiguity cannot be neglected due to its noncommutative structure. This ambiguity corresponds to the degrees of freedom of field redefinition.

One-Loop Tachyon Amplitude in Unoriented Open-Closed String Field Theory

We calculate one-loop 2-point tachyon amplitudes in unoriented open-closed string field theory, and determine all the coupling constants of the interaction vertices in the theory. It is shown that the planar, nonplanar and nonorientable amplitudes are all reproduced correctly, and nontrivial consistencies between the determined coupling constants are observed. The necessity for the gauge group to be SO(2^{13}=8192) is also reconfirmed.
