Plasmonic- and Electronic-Enhancement-Free Coherent Raman Detection of Ångström-Scale Molecular Layers at Metal Interfaces

Coherent Raman scattering provides highly sensitive vibrational analysis through nonlinear light-matter interactions. However, its application to metal interfaces has remained challenging because the intrinsically large non-resonant background (NRB) of metals overwhelms weak interfacial molecular vibrational signals, making direct Raman detection without plasmonic or electronic enhancement highly challenging. Here, we report a time-frequency hybrid coherent Raman spectroscopy approach that overcomes this limitation and enables sensitive detection of ångström-thick molecular systems even on atomically flat metal surfaces. Our method employs a time-frequency engineered detection scheme that combines femtosecond pump and Stokes pulses with a time-delayed, asymmetrically shaped picosecond probe pulse. By exploiting instantaneous temporal response of the metal NRB, this pulse configuration effectively filters out the dominant metal NRB in the time domain while retaining a controlled residual NRB that acts as an internal local oscillator, enabling strong interferometric amplification of weak interfacial vibrational signatures. This all-optical coherent enhancement strategy establishes a new route for direct, non-invasive Raman detection of interfacial molecular systems across a wide range of surfaces without requiring structure- and material-specific plasmonic and electronic enhancement mechanisms.

Dramatic Enhancement of Supercontinuum Generation in H$_2$O by Non-Harmonic Two-Color Excitation

We demonstrate a dramatic enhancement of supercontinuum generation (SCG) in H$_2$O driven by non-harmonic two-color laser fields, where pump and seed frequencies are not integer multiples. This scheme yields a broadband SC spectrum enhanced by approximately three orders of magnitude over the single-color case. Systematic experiments and theoretical analysis, including isotope effects, show that the enhancement arises from soliton compression with resonant dispersive wave (RDW) emission, phase- and group-velocity-matched four-wave mixing (FWM), and cross-phase modulation (XPM), offering a versatile route to stronger SCG and noise suppression in broadband spectroscopy in H$_2$O, an emerging topic in attosecond and surface physics.

Pilot search for axion-like particles by a three-beam stimulated resonant photon collider with short pulse lasers

Toward the systematic search for axion-like particles in the eV mass range, we proposed the concept of a stimulated resonant photon collider by focusing three short pulse lasers into vacuum. In order to realize such a collider, we have performed a proof-of-principle experiment with a set of large incident angles between three beams to overcome the expected difficulty to ensure the space-time overlap between short pulse lasers and also established a method to evaluate the bias on the polarization states, which is useful for a future variable-incident-angle collision system. In this paper we present a result from the pilot search with the developed system and the method. The search result was consistent with null. We thus have set the upper limit on the minimum ALP-photon coupling down to $1.5 \times 10^{-4}$ GeV${}^{-1}$ at the ALP mass of 1.53 eV with a confidence level of 95 %.

White-light-seeded, CEP-stable, 4.5-W, 4-micron KTA parametric amplifier driven by a 1.4-ps Yb:YAG thin disk laser

We demonstrate a robust, carrier envelope phase (CEP)-stable, potassium titanyl arsenate (KTA)-based optical parametric amplifier (OPA) delivering 6-cycle (79 fs), 3.8-$μ$m pulses at a 100-kHz repetition rate with an average power of 4.5 W. The pivotal achievement is stable generation of supercontinuum (SC) seed pulses in a YAG crystal with a rather long pulse of 1.4 ps; to our knowledge, this is the longest duration for SC generation (SCG). This technology offers a robust and simplified OPA architecture with characteristics of passively-stabilized CEP, simplified dispersion management with bulk materials, wavelength tunability of the output pulses from 1.3-4.5 $μ$m, and the future power scaling up to kW-class based on Yb:YAG thin disk amplifiers. The total output power of 17 W (signal plus idler) is achieved and the capability of this high photon flux aspect is successively demonstrated by its application to high harmonic generation (HHG) in ZnSe crystals, with which faint yet novel signals above their bandgap are clearly observed.

Sub 100-fs, 5.2-$μ$m ZGP Parametric Amplifier Driven by a ps Ho:YAG Chirped Pulse Amplifier and its application to high harmonic generation

We report a 1 kHz repetition-rate mid-IR (MIR) optical parametric amplifier (OPA) system operating at a central wavelength of 5.2 $μ$m with the tail-to-tail spectrum extending over 1.5 $μ$m and delivering 40 $μ$J pulses that are compressed to 99 fs (5.6 optical cycles). Also we develop a novel pulse compression scheme for further pulse compression and wavelength tunability. As the first application of this laser system, we generated high harmonics in bulk ZnSe above the bandgap, dense exciton generation after 10-photon absorption, high order sum- and difference-frequency generation, ultrafast transition in the conduction band, which reflects the structure of conduction bands.
