Finite-temperature transition of the distorted kagome-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Motivated by the recent experiment on kagome-lattice antiferromagnets, we study the zero-field ordering behavior of the antiferromagnetic classical Heisenberg model on a uniaxially distorted kagome lattice by Monte Carlo simulations. A first-order transition, which has no counterpart in the corresponding undistorted model, takes place at a very low temperature. Origin of the transition is ascribed to a cooperative proliferation of topological excitations inherent to the model.

Multiple-q states and skyrmion lattice of the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet under magnetic fields

Ordering of the frustrated classical Heisenberg model on the triangular-lattice with an incommensurate spiral spin structure is studied under magnetic fields by means of a mean-field analysis and a Monte Carlo simulation. Several types of multiple-q states including the "skyrmion-lattice" state is observed in addition to the standard single-q state. In contrast to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction driven system, the present model allows both skyrmions and anti-skyrmions, together with a new thermodynamic phase where skyrmion and anti-skyrmion lattices form a domain state.

Cubic and non-cubic multiple-q states in the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice

The ordering of the classical Heisenberg model on the pyrochlore lattice with the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction J1 and the ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour interaction J2 is investigated by means of a mean-field analysis and a Monte Carlo simulation. For a moderate J2/J1-value, the model exhibits a first-order transition into an incommensurate multiple-q ordered state where multiple Bragg peaks coexist in the spin structure factor. We show that there are two types of metastable multiple-q states, a cubic symmetric sextuple-q state and a non-cubic symmetric quadruple-q state. Based on a Monte Carlo simulation, we find that the cubic sextuple-q state appears just below the first-order transition temperature, while another transition from the cubic sextuple-q state to the non-cubic quadruple-q state occurs at a lower temperature.

Novel spin-liquid states in the frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice

Recent experiment on a honeycomb-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (AF) Bi$_3$Mn$_4$O$_{12}$(NO$_3$) revealed a novel spin-liquid-like behavior down to low temperature, which was ascribed to the frustration effect due to the competition between the AF nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions $J_1$ and $J_2$. Motivated by the experiment, we study the ordering of the $J_1$ -$J_2$ frustrated classical Heisenberg AF on a honeycomb lattice both by a low-temperature expansion and a Monte Carlo simulation. The model has been known to possess a massive degeneracy of the ground state, which, however, might be lifted due to thermal fluctuations leading to a unique ordered state, the effect known as 'order-by-disorder'. We find that the model exhibits an intriguing ordering behavior, particularly near the AF phase boundary. The energy scale of the order-by-disorder is suppressed there down to extremely low temperatures, giving rise to exotic spin-liquid states like a "ring-liquid" or a "pancake-liquid" state accompanied by the characteristic spin structure factor and the field-induced antiferromagnetism. We argue that the recent experimental data are explicable if the system is in such exotic spin-liquid states.

Phase transition of the three-dimensional chiral Ginzburg-Landau model -- search for the chiral phase

Nature of the phase transition of regularly frustrated vector spin systems in three dimensions is investigated based on a Ginzburg-Landau-type effective Hamiltonian. On the basis of the variational analysis of this model, Onoda et al recently suggested the possible occurrence of a chiral phase, where the vector chirality exhibits a long-range order without the long-range order of the spin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 027206 (2007)]. In the present paper, we elaborate their analysis by considering the possibility of a first-order transition which was not taken into account in their analysis. We find that the first-order transition indeed occurs within the variational approximation, which significantly reduces the stability range of the chiral phase, while the chiral phase still persists in a restricted parameter range. Then, we perform an extensive Monte Carlo simulation focusing on such a parameter range. Contrary to the variational result, however, we do not find any evidence of the chiral phase. The range of the chiral phase, if any, is estimated to be less than 0.1% in the temperature width.

Signature of a Z_2 vortex in the dynamical correlations of the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Dynamical properties of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice are investigated by means of a spin-dynamics simulation and an analytical calculation. While the model was suggested to exhibit a topological transition driven by the Z_2-vortex binding-unbinding, weakness of the associated thermodynamic singularity has made it difficult to observe the evidence of the Z_2 vortex experimentally so far, only some indirect support. Here, we show that the signature of the Z_2-vortex excitation and the vortex-induced topological transition can be captured from the dynamical spin correlations. In particular, the dynamical spin structure factor exhibits a characteristic central peak around the Z_2-vortex transition, and this central peak will be a fingerprint of the Z_2-vortex excitation.

Z_2-vortex ordering of the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Ordering of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice is studied by means of a mean-field calculation, a scaling argument and a Monte Carlo simulation, with special attention to its vortex degree of freedom. The model exhibits a thermodynamic transition driven by the Z_2-vortex binding-unbinding, at which various thermodynamic quantities exhibit an essential singularity. The low-temperature state is a "spin-gel" state with a long but finite spin correlation length where the ergodicity is broken topologically. Implications to recent experiments on triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are discussed.

Packing and percolation of poly-disperse discs and spheres

For the binary discs packed in two dimensions, the packing fraction of disc assembly becomes lower than that of the monodisperse system when the size ratio is close to unity. We show that the suppressed packing fraction is caused by an increase of the adjacent neighbours with long bonds where the adjacent neighbours is defined on the basis of the Laguerre (radical) tessellation. For the poly-disperse systems in two and three dimensions, the packing fraction is shown to have a minimuma as a function of the poly-dispersity. Percolation process in the densely packed discs and spheres is also studied. The critical area (volume) fraction in two (three) dimensions is shown to be a monotonically increasing (decreasing) function of the poly-dispersity.
