On the Cauchy problem for a weakly coupled system of semi-linear $σ$-evolution equations with double dissipation

In this paper, we would like to consider the Cauchy problem for a multi-component weakly coupled system of semi-linear $σ$-evolution equations with double dissipation for any $σ\ge 1$. The first main purpose is to obtain the global (in time) existence of small data solutions in the supercritical condition by assuming additional $L^1$ regularity for the initial data and using multi-loss of decay wisely. For the second main one, we are interested in establishing the blow-up results together with sharp estimates for lifespan of solutions in the subcritical case. The proof is based on a contradiction argument with the help of modified test functions to derive the upper bound estimates. Finally, we succeed in catching the lower bound estimate by constructing Sobolev spaces with the time-dependent weighted functions of polynomial type in their corresponding norms.

Structure preserving numerical methods for the ideal compressible MHD system

We introduce a novel structure-preserving method in order to approximate the compressible ideal Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations. This technique addresses the MHD equations using a non-divergence formulation, where the contributions of the magnetic field to the momentum and total mechanical energy are treated as source terms. Our approach uses the Marchuk-Strang splitting technique and involves three distinct components: a compressible Euler solver, a source-system solver, and an update procedure for the total mechanical energy. The scheme allows for significant freedom on the choice of Euler's equation solver, while the magnetic field is discretized using a curl-conforming finite element space, yielding exact preservation of the involution constraints. We prove that the method preserves invariant domain properties, including positivity of density, positivity of internal energy, and the minimum principle of the specific entropy. If the scheme used to solve Euler's equation conserves total energy, then the resulting MHD scheme can be proven to preserve total energy. Similarly, if the scheme used to solve Euler's equation is entropy-stable, then the resulting MHD scheme is entropy stable as well. In our approach, the CFL condition does not depend on magnetosonic wave-speeds, but only on the usual maximum wave speed from Euler's system. To validate the effectiveness of our method, we solve a variety of ideal MHD problems, showing that the method is capable of delivering high-order accuracy in space for smooth problems, while also offering unconditional robustness in the shock hydrodynamics regime as well.

Locally Hölder continuity of the solution map to a boundary control problem with finite mixed control-state constraints

The local stability of the solution map to a parametric boundary control problem governed by semilinear elliptic equations with finite mixed pointwise constraints is considered in this paper. We prove that the solution map is locally Hölder continuous in $L^\infty-$norm of control variable when the strictly nonnegative second-order optimality conditions are satisfied for the unperturbed problem.

Monolithic parabolic regularization of the MHD equations and entropy principles

We show at the PDE level that the monolithic parabolic regularization of the equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) is compatible with all the generalized entropies, fulfills the minimum entropy principle, and preserves the positivity of density and internal energy. We then numerically investigate this regularization for the MHD equations using continuous finite elements in space and explicit strong stability preserving Runge-Kuta methods in time. The artificial viscosity coefficient of the regularization term is constructed to be proportional to the entropy residual of MHD. It is shown that the method has a high order of accuracy for smooth problems and captures strong shocks and discontinuities accurately for non-smooth problems.

Blow-up and lifespan estimates for solutions to the weakly coupled system of nonlinear damped wave equations outside a ball

In this paper, we consider the initial-boundary value problems with several fundamental boundary conditions (the Dirichlet/Neumann/Robin boundary condition) for the multi-component system of semi-linear classical damped wave equations outside a ball. By applying a test function approach with a judicious choice of test functions, which approximates the harmonic functions being subject to these boundary conditions on $\partial Ω$, simultaneously we have succeeded in proving the blow-up result in a finite time as well as in catching the sharp upper bound of lifespan estimates for small solutions in two and higher spatial dimensions. Moreover, such kind of these results will be discussed in one-dimensional case at the end of this work.

A high-order residual-based viscosity finite element method for the ideal MHD equations

We present a high order, robust, and stable shock-capturing technique for finite element approximations of ideal MHD. The method uses continuous Lagrange polynomials in space and explicit Runge-Kutta schemes in time. The shock-capturing term is based on the residual of MHD which tracks the shock and discontinuity positions, and adds a sufficient amount of viscosity to stabilize them. The method is tested up to third order polynomial spaces and an expected fourth-order convergence rate is obtained for smooth problems. Several discontinuous benchmarks such as Orszag-Tang, MHD rotor, Brio-Wu problems are solved in one, two, and three spatial dimensions. Sharp shocks and discontinuity resolutions are obtained.

The Cauchy problem for the nonlinear viscous Boussinesq equation in the $L^q$ framework

In this paper, we study the viscous Boussinesq equation in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$, which describes the propagation of small amplitude and long waves on the surface of water with viscous effects. Concerning the linearized Cauchy problem, some qualitative properties of solutions including $L^m-L^q$ estimates with $1\leqslant m\leqslant q\leqslant \infty$, inviscid limits and asymptotic profiles of solution with respect to the small viscosity are investigated by means of the Fourier analysis and the WKB method. For another, by applying some fractional order interpolations in the harmonic analysis, we derive the $L^q$ well-posedness and estimates for small data solutions to the nonlinear viscous Boussinesq equation under some conditions for the parameter of nonlinearity.

Energy stable and accurate coupling of finite element methods and finite difference methods

We introduce a hybrid method to couple continuous Galerkin finite element methods and high-order finite difference methods in a nonconforming multiblock fashion. The aim is to optimize computational efficiency when complex geometries are present. The proposed coupling technique requires minimal changes in the existing schemes while maintaining strict stability, accuracy, and energy conservation. Results are demonstrated on linear and nonlinear scalar conservation laws in two spatial dimensions.

Global existence results for semi-linear structurally damped wave equations with nonlinear convection

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for semi-linear wave equations with structural damping term $ν(-Δ)^2 u_t$, where $ν>0$ is a constant. As being mentioned in [8,10], the linear principal part brings both the diffusion phenomenon and the regularity loss of solutions. This implies that, for the nonlinear problems, the choice of solution spaces plays an important role to obtain global solutions with sharp decay properties in time. Our main purpose of this paper is to prove the global (in time) existence of solutions for the small data and their decay properties for the supercritical nonlinearities.

Sharp lifespan estimates for the weakly coupled system of semilinear damped wave equations in the critical case

The open question, which seems to be also the final part, in terms of studying the Cauchy problem for the weakly coupled system of damped wave equations or reaction-diffusion equations, is so far known as the sharp lifespan estimates in the critical case. In this paper, we mainly investigate lifespan estimates for solutions to the weakly coupled system of semilinear damped wave equations in the critical case. By using a suitable test function method associated with nonlinear differential inequalities, we catch upper bound estimates for the lifespan. Moreover, we establish polynomial-logarithmic type time-weighted Sobolev spaces to obtain lower bound estimates for the lifespan in low spatial dimensions. Then, together with the derived lifespan estimates, new and sharp results on estimates for the lifespan in the critical case are claimed. Finally, we give an application of our results to the semilinear reaction-diffusion system in the critical case.

Upper semicontinuity of the solution map to a parametric boundary optimal control problem with unbounded constraint sets

We would like to study the solution stability of a parametric control problem governed by semilinear elliptic equations with a mixed state-control constraint, where the cost function is nonconvex and the admissible set is unbounded. The main goal of this paper is to give some sufficient conditions under which the solution map is upper semicontinuous and continuous with respect to parameters.

The interplay of critical regularity of nonlinearities in a weakly coupled system of semi-linear damped wave equations

We would like to study a weakly coupled system of semi-linear classical damped wave equations with moduli of continuity in nonlinearities whose powers belong to the critical curve in the $p-q$ plane. The main goal of this paper is to find out the sharp conditions of these moduli of continuity which classify between global (in time) existence of small data solutions and finite time blow-up of solutions.

Critical exponent for semi-linear structurally damped wave equation of derivative type

Main purpose of this paper is to study the following semi-linear structurally damped wave equation with nonlinearity of derivative type: $$u_{tt}- Δu+ μ(-Δ)^{σ/2} u_t= |u_t|^p,\quad u(0,x)= u_0(x),\quad u_t(0,x)=u_1(x),$$ with $μ>0$, $n\geq1$, $σ\in (0,2]$ and $p>1$. In particular, we are going to prove the non-existence of global weak solutions by using a new test function and suitable sign assumptions on the initial data in both the subcritical case and the critical case.

A Monotonic Optimization Approach for Solving Strictly Quasiconvex Multiobjective Programming Problems

In this article, we use the monotonic optimization approach to propose an outcome-space outer approximation by copolyblocks for solving strictly quasiconvex multiobjective programming problems and especially in the case that the objective functions are nonlinear fractional. After the algorithm is terminated, with any given tolerance, we obtain an approximation of the weakly efficient solution set, that contains the whole weakly efficient solution set of the problem. The algorithm is proved to be convergent and it is suitable to be implemented in parallel using standard convex programming tools. Some computational experiments are reported to show the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

On the Cauchy problem for semilinear regularity-loss-type $σ$-evolution models with memory term

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for semilinear $σ$-evolution models with an exponential decay memory term. Concerning the corresponding linear Cauchy problem, we derive some regularity-loss-type estimates of solutions and generalized diffusion phenomena. Particularly, the obtained estimations for solutions are sharper than those in the previous paper [20]. Then, we determine the critical exponents for the semilinear Cauchy problem with power nonlinearity in some spatial dimensions by proving global (in time) existence of Sobolev solutions with low regularity of fractional orders and blow-up result for the Sobolev solutions even for any fractional value of $σ\geqslant 1$.

Blow up results for semi-linear structural damped wave model with nonlinear memory

This article is to study the nonexistence of global solutions to semi-linear structurally damped wave equation with nonlinear memory in $\R^n$ for any space dimensions $n\ge 1$ and for the initial arbitrarily small data being subject to the positivity assumption. We intend to apply the method of a modified test function to establish blow-up results and to overcome some difficulties as well caused by the well-known fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{σ/2}$ in structural damping terms.

Existence and nonexistence of global solutions for a structurally damped wave system with power nonlinearities

Our interest itself of this paper is strongly inspired from an open problem in the paper [1] published by D'Abbicco. In this article, we would like to study the Cauchy problem for a weakly coupled system of semi-linear structurally damped wave equations. Main goal is to find the threshold, which classifies the global (in time) existence of small data solutions or the nonexistence of global solutions under the growth condition of the nonlinearities.
