3-form dark energy and cosmic birefringence

3-forms are interesting fields to study in the cosmological context for numerous reasons, such as being candidates for explaining inflation and dark energy. The background evolution of a 3-form field is similar to but distinguishable from a scalar field in an expanding universe, and its tensorial structure allows for unique couplings that cannot be experienced by canonical scalars. In this work, we explore the possibility that 3-form dark energy can explain cosmic birefringence. We consider two EFT-inspired couplings between the 3-form and the photon, and compute the birefringence angle $\beta$. We find that a dimension-6 gauge-invariant operator necessitates an extremely large coupling to explain $\beta\sim0.3^\circ$, the value suggested by observations of recent cosmic microwave background radiation. Conversely, a dimension-4 operator can accommodate $\beta\sim0.3^\circ$ at the expense exciting the longitudinal mode of the photon. Interestingly, demanding a self-consistent decoupling limit implies the photon mass lies within a few orders of magnitude of $H_0$. We also derive `universal' profiles for $\beta(z)$, finding the $\beta$ from the dimension-4 operator is insensitive to the form of the 3-form potential but is sensitive to the initial conditions. Contrarily, the dimension-6 operator is highly sensitive to the form of the potential. We finally compare the universal profiles to that of axion-like particle (ALP) dark energy and an ultralight massive 3-form, the latter obtained from numerically integrated cosmological histories consistent with $\Lambda$CDM up to low redshift. Our results show that birefringence from 3-form dark energy can both mimic that from an ALP or be distinguishable, depending on the field configuration in the early universe.

Phantom crossing from the Standard Model and General Relativity

Suggestions of a late-time phantom crossing from DESI baryon acoustic oscillation measurements, combined with cosmic microwave background and Type-Ia supernova observations, have renewed interest in non-standard dark energy models. In this Letter, we propose a new realization of a low redshift phantom crossing using only well understood ingredients from fermion condensation and general relativity. Our construction relies on the interplay between effective quintom-like dark energy and backreaction from non-linear structure formation. The full cosmological evolution is consistent with $\Lambda$CDM until low redshift, where the backreaction starts to become prominent and a phase transition occurs. At this point, the total dark energy equation of state first crosses $w_{\text{DE}}=-1$ from above. For benchmark values of the backreaction energy density, a second crossing from below occurs at a lower redshift, as suggested by recent observation. Fitting our theoretical model with CPL parametrization, we find the result is consistent with the combined DESI+CMB+SNIa data analysis with DESY5, PantheonPlus, and Union3 datasets. Specifically, for backreaction density parameter $\Omega_{\rm BR}(z=0) = 0.0572$, the CPL parametrization gives the phantom crossing redshift $z_* \simeq 0.35$, $w_0 \simeq -0.76 $ and $w_a \simeq -0.93$.

Black Hole Interiors as a Laboratory for Time-Dependent Classical Double Copy

The classical double copy provides a powerful bridge between gravity and gauge theory, but its most explicit realizations remain concentrated in stationary or highly symmetric settings. We show that trapped regions of black-hole geometries furnish an exact setting for time-dependent classical double copy. In the static, spherically symmetric case, each trapped interval admits a local single-copy description on the associated Kantowski--Sachs patch that is intrinsically time dependent, although it can be derived from static Kerr--Schild data and does not require knowledge of any exterior black-hole completion. We prove that this class is characterized intrinsically by a distinguished relation between the Kantowski--Sachs scale factors, equivalently by the longitudinal relation \(p_{\parallel}=-\rho\), and that the Kerr--Schild scalar and single-copy field are uniquely reconstructible from interior cosmological data. Schwarzschild provides the singular benchmark, for which the single-copy electric field diverges along the interior evolution, while the regular Bardeen solution yields a finite single-copy field throughout the trapped region and a smooth extension into a regular static core. The Bardeen core violates the strong energy condition in a compact region, whereas the corresponding single-copy Maxwell field remains regular and satisfies the standard classical energy conditions. We further show that the Bardeen horizon phase structure is encoded in the single-copy scalar. These results identify trapped Kerr--Schild interiors as an exact local laboratory for time-dependent classical double copy.

Beyond general relativity: gravitational waves in non-minimally coupled theories

Non-minimal couplings between matter and curvature tensors arise in many different contexts. Such couplings modify solutions of general relativity (GR) and therefore can be probed in various astrophysical systems. A particularly interesting scenario arises if dark matter experiences non-minimal couplings, as dark matter densities are expected to spike in the vicinity of binary black hole mergers. This gives a novel setting for simultaneously studying dark matter and (beyond) GR physics via observations of gravitational waves (GWs). In this work, we explore effects of various non-minimal couplings on GWs by working with a model-independent parameterization for left- and right-handed GW strains. We extend the parameterization proposed in \cite{Jenks:2023pmk,Daniel:2024lev} to include early-universe effects, and we write down the generic solution assuming slowly-varying matter fields. We then systematically apply our results to three models: Kalb-Ramond dark matter with dimension-four operators, axion-dilaton-Chern-Simons-Gauss-Bonnet dimension-five operators, and dimension-six couplings to a (dark) vector field.

Detecting the $\pi$-axiverse through parametric resonance

Axions are a leading dark matter candidate. In this work, we study the detectability of a multi-axion-like model, dubbed the $\pi$-axiverse, that is distinguishable from the string axiverse. The dark matter candidates are $N^2-1$ pseudo-Nambu-Goto modes (pion- and kaon-like states) stemming from spontaneous breaking of a global $SU(N)$ flavor symmetry. The low energy theory includes $N-1$ axionic couplings with additional couplings to the Standard Model photon kinetic energy, reminiscent of the string theory dilaton-photon coupling. We explore the parametric resonance of photons interacting with such a dark sector. Axions are well known to form macroscopic solitonic-like objects (axion stars), which experience instabilities due to overdensities stemming from mergers or accretion processes. The instabilities produce high-intensity bursts of radiation via parametric resonance that may be detected at observatories such as MeerKAT, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), and the next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA). Using numerical methods, we systematically explore the multi-dimensional parameter space of the $\pi$-axiverse to search for regions where such signals are detectable, which generically differ from single axion models. We identify regions of the parameter space where MeerKAT, SKA, and ngVLA can resolve such signals, assessing the potential of transient searches to constrain the model. Our results provide a significant step forward in understanding the phenomenology and indirect detection of multi-axion-dilaton dark matter.

Background ambiguity and the G\"odel double copy

In this work, we investigate the assumptions regarding spacetime backgrounds underlying the classical double copy. We argue (contrary to the norm) that single-copy fields naturally constructed on the original curved background metric are only interpretable on a flat metric when such a well-defined limit exists, for which Kerr--Schild coordinates offer a natural choice. As an explicit example where such a distinction matters, we initiate an exploration of single-copies for the G\"odel universe. This metric lacks a (geodesic) Kerr--Schild representation yet is Petrov type-D, meaning the technology of the ``Weyl double copy" may be utilized. The Weyl derived single copy has many desirable features, including matching the defining properties of the spacetime, and being sourced by the mixed Ricci tensor just as Kerr--Schild single copies are. To compare, we propose a sourced flat-space single-copy interpretation for the G\"odel metric by leveraging its symmetries, and find that this proposal lacks the defining properties of the spacetime, and is not consistent with the flat limit of our curved-space single copy. Notably, this inconsistency does not occur in Kerr--Schild metrics. Our curved-space single copy also lead to the same electromagnetic analogue of the G\"odel universe found separately through tidal force analogies, opening a new avenue of exploration between the double copy and gravitoelectromagnetism programs.

The Field Theory Axiverse

Axion and axion-like particles (ALPs) are a prominent candidate for physics beyond the Standard Model, and can play an important role in cosmology, serving as dark matter or dark energy, or both, drawing motivation in part from the string theory axiverse. Axion-like particles (ALPs) can also arise as composite degrees of freedom following chiral symmetry breaking in a dark confining gauge theory, analogous to the Standard Model (SM) pion. A dark sector with arbitrary $N_f$ flavors of dark quarks leads to $N_f^2-1$ axion-like states, effectively a field theory axiverse (or '$\pi$-axiverse'). A portal to the visible sector can be achieved through the standard kinetic mixing between the dark photon and SM photon, generating millicharges for the dark quarks and consequently couplings, both parity-even and parity-odd, between the SM and the dark pions. This scenario has been studied for the $N_f=2$ case and more recently for a dark Standard Model with $N_f=6$. In this work, we study the spectrum of this field theory axiverse for an arbitrary number of flavors, and apply this to the example $N_f=10$. We calculate the couplings to the SM photon analogous to the conventional axion-photon coupling, including the $N_f$ and $N_c$ dependence, and compute the present and future constraints on the $N_f=10$, $N_c=3$, $\pi$-axiverse. We elucidate the accompanying 'bary-verse' of superheavy dark baryons, namely an ensemble of charged and neutral dark baryons with a mass set by the dark pion decay constant.

The Kalb-Ramond field and Gravitational Parity Violation

Gravitational wave physics can probe theories that extend beyond General Relativity. Motivated by the attention on the Kalb-Ramond field as a dark matter candidate, in this work, we study a parity violating dimension four operator which couples the dual Riemann curvature to the 2-form field. After mapping the equations of motion for the right- and left-handed gravitational wave amplitudes to the novel parameterization presented in \cite{Jenks:2023pmk}, we discuss constraints on the model parameters in light of the coincident electromagnetic/gravitational wave signal of GW170817.

Isometries and the double copy

In the standard derivation of the Kerr-Schild double copy, the geodicity of the Kerr-Schild vector and the stationarity of the spacetime are presented as assumptions that are necessary for the single copy to satisfy Maxwell's equations. However, it is well known that the vacuum Einstein equations imply that the Kerr-Schild vector is geodesic and shear-free, and that the spacetime possesses a distinguished vector field that is simultaneously a Killing vector of the full spacetime and the flat background, but need not be timelike with respect to the background metric. We show that the gauge field obtained by contracting this distinguished Killing vector with the Kerr-Schild graviton solves the vacuum Maxwell equations, and that this definition of the Kerr-Schild double copy implies the Weyl double copy when the spacetime is Petrov type D. When the Killing vector is taken to be timelike with respect to the background metric, we recover the familiar Kerr-Schild double copy, but the prescription is well defined for any vacuum Kerr-Schild spacetime and we present new examples where the Killing vector is null or spacelike. While most examples of physical interest are type D, vacuum Kerr-Schild spacetimes are generically of Petrov type II. We present a straightforward example of such a spacetime and study its double copy structure. Our results apply to real Lorentzian spacetimes as well as complex spacetimes and real spacetimes with Kleinian signature, and provide a simple correspondence between real and self-dual vacuum Kerr-Schild spacetimes. This correspondence allows us to study the double copy structure of a self-dual analog of the Kerr spacetime. We provide evidence that this spacetime may be diffeomorphic to the self-dual Taub-NUT solution.

The $\pi$-axion and $\pi$-axiverse of dark QCD

Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are a prominent dark matter candidate, drawing motivation in part from the axiverse of string theory. Axion-like particles can also arise as composite degrees of freedom of a dark sector, for example, as dark pions in dark Quantum Chromo-Dynamics. In a dark Standard Model (SM) wherein all 6 quark flavors are light while the photon is massive, one finds a rich low-energy spectrum of stable and ultralight particles, in the form of neutral and charged dark scalars, and complex neutral scalars analogous to the SM kaon, with mass splittings determined by the mass and charge of the dark quarks. The model finds a natural portal to the visible sector via kinetic coupling of the dark and visible photons, and consequent millicharges for dark matter. The dark matter can be a mixture of all these ultralight bosonic degrees of freedom, and exhibit both parity-even and parity-odd interactions, making the theory testable at a wide variety of experiments. In context of dark QCD with $N_f$ flavors of light quarks, this scenario predicts $N_f^2-1$ ultralight axion-like particles -- effectively an axiverse from dark QCD. This '$\pi$-axiverse' is consistent with but makes no recourse to string theory, and is complementary to the conventional string theory axiverse.

Pure gauge theory for the gravitational spin connection

The gravitational spin connection appears in gravity as a non-Abelian gauge field for the Lorentz group $SO(3,1)$, which is non-compact. The action for General Relativity is linear in the field strength associated to the spin connection, and its equation of motion corresponds to the standard metricity constraint. Consequently, the zero-torsion spin connection is never realized as an independent degree of freedom and is determined by the vierbein field. In this work, we take a different perspective and consider a pure Yang-Mills theory for the spin connection coupled to Dirac fermions, resulting in the former being a dynamical field. After discussing various approaches towards managing the pathologies associated with non-compact gauge theories, we compute the tree-level amplitude for fermion scattering via a spin connection exchange. In contrast to integrating out torsion in the presence of fermions, the model induces a chiral four-Fermi like term that involves a right-right current interaction, which is not present in the Standard Model.

Einstein-Maxwell theory and the Weyl double copy

The Weyl double copy relates vacuum solutions in general relativity to Abelian gauge fields in Minkowski spacetime. In a previous work, we showed how the Weyl double copy can be extended to provide a treatment of external gravitational sources consistent with the classical Kerr-Schild double copy. Using this generalization, here we provide a complete double copy analysis of electrovacuum Petrov type D spacetimes. This includes the first analysis of the charged C-metric, whose single copy interpretation invokes the two-potential formalism of electrodynamics. We also present the first double copy prescription for the Ricci spinor, which for non-accelerating spacetimes, takes a form similar to the original double copy relation for the Weyl spinor.

Sources in the Weyl double copy

The Weyl double copy relates exact solutions in general relativity to exact solutions in gauge theory, formulated in the spinorial language. To date, the Weyl double copy is understood and employed only for vacuum spacetimes, and hence only to vacuum gauge theories. In this letter, we propose an extension to the Weyl double copy that provides a systematic procedure for treating gravitational sources. We show this extended Weyl double copy gives a new perspective on the Kerr-Newman black hole and the general class of Petrov type D electro-vac spacetimes.

Cosmic acceleration from string induced Galileons

It has been shown a specific Horndeski theory of gravity arises from a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the gravi-dilaton sector of the low-energy effective heterotic string action with a first $α'$ correction. Here we provide a first investigation of the cosmological solutions to the lower dimensional theory by constructing exact solutions to the field equations in various frames. At tree level, in string frame, we find the duality symmetry of the parent theory is unaltered by dimensional reduction, leading to standard bouncing and pre-Big Bang scenario solutions. For $α'\neq0$, we uncover exact models exhibiting cosmic acceleration, where we find interesting physics concerning the number of noncompact dimensions. Certain stability requirements demand the inclusion of a dilaton potential.

The Stringy Origins of Galileons and their Novel Limit

We show generalized Galileons -- a particular subclass of Horndeski gravity -- arise from a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the low-energy effective action of heterotic string theory to first order in $α'$. This suggests Horndeski theories of gravity have a string-theoretic origin. The form of the Galileonic terms is precisely fixed by parameters of the embedding spacetime, so that only a specific subset of Horndeski theories is permitted by string theory. A novel limit of the model is considered by performing a dimensionful rescaling of $α'$.

$D\to4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity and Beyond

A `novel' pure theory of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four-spacetime dimensions can be constructed by rescaling the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, seemingly eluding Lovelock's theorem. Recently, however, the well-posedness of this model has been called into question. Here we apply a `dimensional regularization' technique, first used by Mann and Ross to write down a $D\to2$ limit of general relativity, to the case of pure Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The resulting four-dimensional action is a particular Horndeski theory of gravity matching the result found via a Kaluza-Klein reduction over a flat internal space. Some cosmological solutions of this four-dimensional theory are examined. We further adapt the technique to higher curvature Lovelock theories of gravity, as well as a low-energy effective string action with an $α'$ correction. With respect to the $D\to4$ limit of the $α'$-corrected string action, we find we must also rescale the dilaton to have a non-singular action in four dimensions. Interestingly, when the conformal rescaling $Φ$ is interpreted as another dilaton, the regularized string action appears to be a special case of a covariant multi-Galileon theory of gravity.

The classical double copy of non-singular black holes

We apply the classical double copy procedure to a class of regular, non-singular black hole solutions. We give several examples, paying particular attention to a string-theory-corrected black hole solution emerging from T-duality. Non-perturbative stringy corrections introduce an ultraviolet (UV) zero-point length cutoff which results in non-singular black hole spacetimes. Apart from the UV regulator, the solution is equivalent to the Bardeen black hole spacetime. We extend this solution to include an asymptotic de Sitter background. All Yang-Mills field theory quantities associated with the double copy are well-behaved and finite for all values of parameters. We present a thorough analysis of the black hole horizon structure, additionally uncovering a simple yet new connection between horizons on the gravity side and electric fields on the gauge theory side of the double copy.

From Navier-Stokes to Maxwell via Einstein

We revisit the cutoff surface formulation of fluid-gravity duality in the context of the classical double copy. The spacetimes in this fluid-gravity duality are algebraically special, with Petrov type II when the spacetime is four dimensional. We find two special classes of fluids whose dual spacetimes exhibit higher algebraic speciality: constant vorticity flows have type D gravity duals, while potential flows map to type N spacetimes. Using the Weyl version of the classical double copy, we construct associated single-copy gauge fields for both cases, finding that constant vorticity fluids map to a solenoid gauge field. Additionally we find the scalar in a potential flow fluid maps to the zeroth copy scalar.
