Cartan Geometry and Infinite-Dimensional Kempf-Ness Theory

We pioneer the development of a rigorous infinite-dimensional framework for the Kempf-Ness theorem, addressing the significant challenge posed by the absence of a complexification for the symmetry group in infinite dimensions, e.g, the diffeomorphism group. We propose a novel approach, based on Cartan bundles, to generalize Kempf-Ness theory to infinite dimensions, invoking the fundamental role played by the Maurer-Cartan form. This approach allows us to define and study objects essential for the Kempf-Ness theorem, such as the complex model for orbits and the Kempf-Ness function, as well as establishing its convexity properties and defining a generalized Futaki character. We show how our framework can be applied to the study of various problems in Kähler geometry, deformation quantization, and gauge theory.

Convexity of singular affine structures and toric-focus integrable Hamiltonian systems

This work is devoted to a systematic study of symplectic convexity for integrable Hamiltonian systems with elliptic and focus-focus singularities. A distinctive feature of these systems is that their base spaces are still smooth manifolds (with boundary and corners), similarly to the toric case, but their associated integral affine structures are singular, with non-trivial monodromy, due to focus singularities. We obtain a series of convexity results, both positive and negative, for such singular integral affine base spaces. In particular, near a focus singular point, they are locally convex and the local-global convexity principle still applies. They are also globally convex under some natural additional conditions. However, when the monodromy is sufficiently big then the local-global convexity principle breaks down, and the base spaces can be globally non-convex even for compact manifolds. As one of surprising examples, we construct a 2-dimensional "integral affine black hole", which is locally convex but for which a straight ray from the center can never escape.

Presymplectic convexity and (ir)rational polytopes

In this paper, we extend the Atiyah--Guillemin--Sternberg convexity theorem and Delzant's classification of symplectic toric manifolds to presymplectic manifolds. We also define and study the Morita equivalence of presymplectic toric manifolds and of their corresponding framed momentum polytopes, which may be rational or non-rational. Toric orbifolds, quasifolds and non-commutative toric varieties may be viewed as the quotient of our presymplectic toric manifolds by the kernel isotropy foliation of the presymplectic form.

The tropical momentum map: a classification of toric log symplectic manifolds

We give a generalization of toric symplectic geometry to Poisson manifolds which are symplectic away from a collection of hypersurfaces forming a normal crossing configuration. We introduce the tropical momentum map, which takes values in a generalization of affine space called a log affine manifold. Using this momentum map, we obtain a complete classification of such manifolds in terms of decorated log affine polytopes, hence extending the classification of symplectic toric manifolds achieved by Atiyah, Guillemin-Sternberg, Kostant, and Delzant.

Generalized Virasoro algebra: left-symmetry and related algebraic and hydrodynamic properties

Motivated by the work of Kupershmidt (J. Nonlin. Math. Phys. 6 (1998), 222 --245) we discuss the occurrence of left symmetry in a generalized Virasoro algebra. The multiplication rule is defined, which is necessary and sufficient for this algebra to be quasi-associative. Its link to geometry and nonlinear systems of hydrodynamic type is also recalled. Further, the criteria of skew-symmetry, derivation and Jacobi identity making this algebra into a Lie algebra are derived. The coboundary operators are defined and discussed. We deduce the hereditary operator and its generalization to the corresponding $3-$ary bracket. Further, we derive the so-called $ρ-$compatibility equation and perform a phase-space extension. Finally, concrete relevant particular cases are investigated.

L^2-Cohomology and complete Hamiltonian manifolds

A classical theorem of Frankel for compact Kähler manifolds states that a Kähler S^1-action is Hamiltonian if and only if it has fixed points. We prove a metatheorem which says that when Hodge theory holds on non-compact manifolds, then Frankel's theorem still holds. Finally, we present several concrete situations in which the assumptions of the metatheorem hold.

The Banach Poisson geometry of multi-diagonal Toda-like lattices

The Banach Poisson geometry of multi-diagonal Hamiltonian systems having infinitely many integrals in involution is studied. It is shown that these systems can be considered as generalizing the semi-infinite Toda lattice which is an example of a bidiagonal system, a case to which special attention is given. The generic coadjoint orbits of the Banach Lie group of bidiagonal bounded operators are studied. It is shown that the infinite dimensional generalization of the Flaschka map is a momentum map. Action-angle variables for the Toda system are constructed.

Extensions of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces

The extension of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces is studied and linked to the extension of a special class of Banach Lie algebras. The case of W*-algebras is given particular attention. Semidirect products and the extension of the restricted Banach Lie-Poisson space by the Banach Lie-Poisson space of compact operators are given as examples.

A Nonlinear Analysis of the Averaged Euler Equations

This paper develops the geometry and analysis of the averaged Euler equations for ideal incompressible flow in domains in Euclidean space and on Riemannian manifolds, possibly with boundary. The averaged Euler equations involve a parameter $α$; one interpretation is that they are obtained by ensemble averaging the Euler equations in Lagrangian representation over rapid fluctuations whose amplitudes are of order $α$. The particle flows associated with these equations are shown to be geodesics on a suitable group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms, just as with the Euler equations themselves (according to Arnold's theorem), but with respect to a right invariant $H^1$ metric instead of the $L^2$ metric. The equations are also equivalent to those for a certain second grade fluid. Additional properties of the Euler equations, such as smoothness of the geodesic spray (the Ebin-Marsden theorem) are also shown to hold. Using this nonlinear analysis framework, the limit of zero viscosity for the corresponding viscous equations is shown to be a regular limit, {\it even in the presence of boundaries}.

Curvature of the Virasoro-Bott group

We consider a natural Riemannian metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of all embeddings from a manifold into a Riemannian manifold, and derive its geodesic equation in the case $\Emb(\Bbb R,\Bbb R)$ which turns out to be Burgers' equation. Then we derive the geodesic equation, the curvature, and the Jacobi equation of a right invariant Riemannian metric on an infinite dimensional Lie group, which we apply to $\Diff(\Bbb R)$, $\Diff(S^1)$, and the Virasoro-Bott group. Many of these results are well known, the emphasis is on conciseness and clarity.

Hamiltonian Reduction of Diffeomorphism Invariant Field

For a variety of diffeomorphism-invariant field theories describing hypersurface motions (such as relativistic M-branes in space-time dimension M+2) we perform a Hamiltonian reduction ``at level 0'', showing that a simple algebraic function of the normal velocity is canonically conjugate to the shape Σof the hypersurface. The Hamiltonian dependence on Σis solely via the domain of integration, raising hope for a consistent, reparametrisation-invariant quantization.
