The Lie-Poisson structure of the LAE-$α$ equation

This paper shows that the time $t$ map of the averaged Euler equations, with Dirichlet, Neumann, and mixed boundary conditions is canonical relative to a Lie-Poisson bracket constructed via a non-smooth reduction for the corresponding diffeomorphism groups. It is also shown that the geodesic spray for Neumann and mixed boundary conditions is smooth, a result already known for Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Symplectic leaves in real Banach Lie-Poisson spaces

We present several large classes of real Banach Lie-Poisson spaces whose characteristic distributions are integrable, the integral manifolds being symplectic leaves just as in finite dimensions. We also investigate when these leaves are embedded submanifolds or when they have Kähler structures. Our results apply to the real Banach Lie-Poisson spaces provided by the self-adjoint parts of preduals of arbitrary $W^*$-algebras, as well as of certain operator ideals.

The reduced spaces of a symplectic Lie group action

There exist three main approaches to reduction associated to canonical Lie group actions on a symplectic manifold, namely, foliation reduction, introduced by Cartan, Marsden-Weinstein reduction, and optimal reduction, introduced by the authors. When the action is free, proper, and admits a momentum map these three approaches coincide. The goal of this paper is to study the general case of a symplectic action that does not admit a momentum map and one needs to use its natural generalization, a cylinder valued momentum map introduced by Condevaux, Dazord, and Molino. In this case it will be shown that the three reduced spaces mentioned above do not coincide, in general. More specifically, the Marsden-Weinstein reduced spaces are not symplectic but Poisson and their symplectic leaves are given by the optimal reduced spaces. Foliation reduction produces a symplectic reduced space whose Poisson quotient by a certain Lie group associated to the group of symmetries of the problem equals the Marsden-Weinstein reduced space. We illustrate these constructions with concrete examples, special emphasis being given to the reduction of a magnetic cotangent bundle of a Lie group in the situation when the magnetic term ensures the non-existence of the momentum map for the lifted action. The precise relation of the cylinder valued momentum map with group valued momentum maps for Abelian Lie groups is also given.

Geometric representation theory for unitary groups of operator algebras

Geometric realizations for the restrictions of GNS representations to unitary groups of $C^*$-algebras are constructed. These geometric realizations use an appropriate concept of reproducing kernels on vector bundles. To build such realizations in spaces of holomorphic sections, a class of complex coadjoint orbits of the corresponding real Banach-Lie groups are described and some homogeneous holomorphic Hermitian vector bundles that are naturally associated with the coadjoint orbits are constructed.

The relation between local and global dual pairs

In this note we clarify the relationship between the local and global definitions of dual pairs in Poisson geometry. It turns out that these are not equivalent. For the passage from local to global one needs a connected fiber hypothesis (this is well known), while the converse requires a dimension condition (which appears not to be known). We also provide examples illustrating the necessity of the extra conditions.

Asymptotic and Lyapunov stability of Poisson equilibria

This paper includes results centered around three topics, all of them related with the nonlinear stability of equilibria in Poisson dynamical systems. Firstly, we prove an energy-Casimir type sufficient condition for stability that uses functions that are not necessarily conserved by the flow and that takes into account certain asymptotically stable behavior that may occur in the Poisson category. This method is adapted to Poisson systems obtained via a reduction procedure and we show in examples that the kind of stability that we propose is appropriate when dealing with the stability of the equilibria of some constrained systems. Finally, we discuss two situations in which the use of continuous Casimir functions in stability studies is equivalent to the topological stability methods introduced by Patrick {\it et al.}

Banach Lie-Poisson spaces and reduction

The category of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces is introduced and studied. It is shown that the category of W*-algebras can be considered as one of its subcategories. Examples and applications of Banach Lie-Poisson spaces to quantization and integration of Hamiltonian systems are given. The relationship between classical and quantum reduction is discussed.

Singular reduction of implicit Hamiltonian systems

This paper develops the reduction theory of implicit Hamiltonian systems admitting a symmetry group at a singular value of the momentum map. The results naturally extend those known for (explicit) Hamiltonian systems described by Poisson brackets.

Controllability of reduced systems

Sufficient conditions for the controllability of a conservative reduced system are given. Several examples illustrating the theory are also presented.

A short proof of chaos in an atmospheric system

We will prove the presence of chaotic motion in the Lorenz five-component atmospheric system model using the Melnikov function method developed by Holmes and Marsden for Hamiltonian systems on Lie Groups.

The optimal momentum map

The presence of symmetries in a Hamiltonian system usually implies the existence of conservation laws that are represented mathematically in terms of the dynamical preservation of the level sets of a momentum mapping. The symplectic or Marsden--Weinstein reduction procedure takes advantage of this and associates to the original system a new Hamiltonian system with fewer degrees of freedom. However, in a large number of situations, this standard approach does not work or is not efficient enough, in the sense that it does not use all the information encoded in the symmetry of the system. In this work, a new momentum map will be defined that is capable of overcoming most of the problems encountered in the traditional approach.

A symplectic slice theorem

We provide a model for an open invariant neighborhood of any orbit in a symplectic manifold endowed with a canonical proper symmetry. Our results generalize the constructions of Marle and Guillemin and Sternberg for canonical symmetries that have an associated momentum map. In these papers the momentum map played a crucial role in the construction of the tubular model. The present work shows that in the construction of the tubular model it can be used the so called Chu map instead, which exists for any canonical action, unlike the momentum map. Hamilton's equations for any invariant Hamiltonian function take on a particularly simple form in these tubular variables. As an application we will find situations, that we will call tubewise Hamiltonian, in which the existence of a standard momentum map in invariant neighborhoods is guaranteed.

Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation with symmetry

In this paper we study the appearance of branches of relative periodic orbits in Hamiltonian Hopf bifurcation processes in the presence of compact symmetry groups that do not generically exist in the dissipative framework. The theoretical study is illustrated with several examples.

Bifurcation of relative equilibria in mechanical systems with symmetry

The relative equilibria of a symmetric Hamiltonian dynamical system are the critical points of the so-called augmented Hamiltonian. The underlying geometric structure of the system is used to decompose the critical point equations and construct a collection of implicitly defined functions and reduced equations describing the set of relative equilibria in a neighborhood of a given relative equilibrium. The structure of the reduced equations is studied in a few relevant situations. In particular, a persistence result of Lerman and Singer [LS98] is generalized to the framework of Abelian proper actions. Also, a Hamiltonian version of the Equivariant Branching Lemma and a study of bifurcations with maximal isotropy are presented. An elementary example is presented to illustrate the use of this approach.

The Euler-Poincare Equations in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics

Recent theoretical work has developed the Hamilton's-principle analog of Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian systems defined on semidirect products. The main theoretical results are twofold: (1) Euler-Poincaré equations (the Lagrangian analog of Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian equations) are derived for a parameter dependent Lagrangian from a general variational principle of Lagrange d'Alembert type in which variations are constrained; (2) an abstract Kelvin-Noether theorem is derived for such systems. By imposing suitable constraints on the variations and by using invariance properties of the Lagrangian, as one does for the Euler equations for the rigid body and ideal fluids, we cast several standard Eulerian models of geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) at various levels of approximation into Euler-Poincaré form and discuss their corresponding Kelvin-Noether theorems and potential vorticity conservation laws.
