Smale's Mean Value Conjecture and its Dual Conjecture for Complex Polynomials

For the purposes of proving Smale's mean value conjecture, one may restrict consideration to an explicitly described family of so-called Schlicht normalized polynomials. For Schlicht normalized polynomials whose leading coefficient decays sufficiently slowly, we show that the conjectured upper bound $1$ becomes asymptotically valid as the degree $d$ tends to infinity. The key and novel input is a refined Koebe $\frac{1}{4}$-type theorem of Cunningham, tailored to Schlicht functions whose images have bounded logarithmic capacity. For the dual mean value conjecture, we obtain an improvement of Eremenko's Markov-type inequality for regions bounded by polynomial lemniscates on which the polynomial is univalent. As a consequence, we improve the best known unconditional lower bound $\frac{1}{d^2}$ of Dubinin to $\frac{(d-\frac{1}{2})^{1/d}}{d^2}$ for all $d \ge 2$. The strengthened Markov-type inequality constitutes one of the main technical contributions of this paper. Its proof combines the solution to a related extremal problem for the logarithmic capacity of polynomial lemniscates, with the quasi-conformal deformation method introduced by Eremenko and Hayman to establish the connectedness of extremal polynomial lemniscates arising in the Erdos, Herzog and Piranian's problem on maximal lemniscate length.

Methods for exact solutions of nonlinear ordinary differential equations\

In order to find closed form solutions of nonintegrable nonlinear ordinary differential equations, numerous tricks have been proposed. The goal of this short review is to recall classical, 19th-century results, completed in 2006 by Eremenko, which can be turned into algorithms, thus avoiding \textit{ad hoc} assumptions, able to provide \textit{all} (as opposed to some) solutions in a precise class. To illustrate these methods, we present some new such exact solutions, physically relevent.

Linear $q$-difference, difference and differential operators preserving some $\mathcal{A}$-entire functions

We apply Rossi's half-plane version of Borel's Theorem to study the zero distribution of linear combinations of $\mathcal{A}$-entire functions (Theorem 1.2). This provides a unified way to study linear $q$-difference, difference and differential operators (with entire coefficients) preserving subsets of $\mathcal{A}$-entire functions, and hence obtain several analogous results for the Hermite-Poulain Theorem to linear finite ($q$-)difference operators with polynomial coefficients. The method also produces a result on the existence of infinitely many non-real zeros of some differential polynomials of functions in certain sub-classes of $\mathcal{A}$-entire functions.

A Uniqueness Theorem for Holomorphic Mappings in the Disk Sharing Totally Geodesic Hypersurfaces

In this paper, we prove a Second Main Theorem for holomorphic mappings in a disk whose image intersects some families of nonlinear hypersurfaces (totally geodesic hypersurfaces with respect to a meromorphic connection) in the complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^k$. This is a generalization of Cartan's Second Main Theorem. As a consequence, we establish a uniqueness theorem for holomorphic mappings which intersects $O(k^3)$ many totally geodesic hypersurfaces.

Carathéodory balls and proper holomorphic maps on multiply-connected planar domains

In this paper, we will establish the inequivalence of closed balls and the closure of open balls under the Carathéodory metric in some planar domains of finite connectivity greater than $2$, and hence resolve a problem posed by Jarnicki, Pflug and Vigué in 1992. We also establish a corresponding result for some pseudoconvex domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$ for $n \ge 2$. This result will follow from an explicit characterization (up to biholomorphisms) of proper holomorphic maps from a non-degenerate finitely-connected planar domain, $Ω$, onto the standard unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ which answers a question posed by Schmieder in 2005. Similar to Bell and Kaleem's characterization of proper holomorphic maps in terms of Grunsky maps (2008), our characterization of proper holomorphic maps from $Ω$ onto $\mathbb{D}$ is an analogous result to Fatou's famous result that proper holomorphic maps of the unit disk onto itself are finite Blashcke products. Our approach uses a harmonic measure condition of Wang and Yin (2017) on the existence of a proper holomorphic map with prescribed zeros. We will see that certain functions $η(\cdot,p)$ play an analogous role to the Möbius transformations that fix $\mathbb{D}$ in finite Blaschke products. These functions $η(\cdot,p)$ map $Ω$ conformally onto the unit disk with circular arcs (centered at 0) removed and map $p$ to $0$ and can be given in terms of the Schottky-Klein prime function. We also extend a result of Grunsky (1941) and hence introduce a parameter space for proper holomorphic maps from $Ω$ onto $\mathbb{D}$.

The squeezing function on doubly-connected domains via the Loewner differential equation

For any bounded domains $Ω$ in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$, Deng, Guan and Zhang introduced the squeezing function $S_Ω(z)$ which is a biholomorphic invariant of bounded domains. We show that for $n=1$, the squeezing function on an annulus $A_r = \lbrace z \in \mathbb{C} : r <|z| <1 \rbrace$ is given by $S_{A_r}(z)= \max \left\lbrace |z| ,\frac{r}{|z|} \right\rbrace$ for all $0<r<1$. This disproves the conjectured formula for the squeezing function proposed by Deng, Guan and Zhang and establishes (up to biholomorphisms) the squeezing function for all doubly-connected domains in $\mathbb{C}$ other than the punctured plane. It provides the first non-trivial formula for the squeezing function for a wide class of plane domains and answers a question of Wold. Our main tools used to prove this result are the Schottky-Klein prime function (following the work of Crowdy) and a version of the Loewner differential equation on annuli due to Komatu. We also show that these results can be used to obtain lower bounds on the squeezing function for certain product domains in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$.

Hypertranscendency of Perturbations of Hypertranscendental Functions

Inspired by the work of Bank on the hypertranscendence of $Γe^h$ where $Γ$ is the Euler gamma function and $h$ is an entire function, we investigate when a meromorphic function $fe^g$ cannot satisfy any algebraic differential equation over certain field of meromorphic functions, where $f$ and $g$ are meromorphic and entire on the complex plane, respectively. Our results (Theorem 1 and 2) give partial solutions to Bank's Conjecture (1977) on the hypertranscendence of $Γe^h$. We also give some sufficient conditions for hypertranscendence of meromorphic function of the form $f+g$, $f\cdot g$ and $f\circ g$ in Theorem 3 and 4.

An upper bound on the dimension of the voting system of the European Union Council under the Lisbon rules

The voting rules of the European Council (EU) under the Treaty of Lisbon became effective on 1 November 2014. Kurz \& Napel (2015) showed that the dimension of this voting system is between $7$ and $13,368$. The lower bound $7$ actually sets a new world record for the dimension of the real-world voting bodies. In this article, by finding a new way to represent the union of two weighted games as an intersection of certain weighted games (Theorem 1), we greatly reduce the upper bound $13,368$ to just $25$. We also consider what will happen to our upper bound and Kurz \& Napel's lower bound if the United Kingdom is no longer a member of the European Union Council.

Hyberbolic Belyi maps and Shabat-Blaschke products

We first introduce hyperbolic analogues of Belyi maps, Shabat polynomials and Grothendieck's dessins d'enfant. In particular we introduce and study the Shabat-Blaschke products and the size of their hyperbolic dessin d'enfants in the unit disk. We then study a special class of Shabat-Blaschke products, namely the Chebyshev-Blaschke products. Inspired by the work of Ismail and Zhang (2007) on the coefficients of the Ramanujan's entire function, we will give similar arithmetic properties of the coefficients of the Chebyshev-Blaschke products and then use them to prove some Landen-type identities for theta functions.

Singularity methods for meromorphic solutions of differential equations

This chapter is mainly a tutorial introduction to methods recently developed in order to find all (as opposed to some) meromorphic particular solutions of given nonintegrable, autonomous, algebraic ordinary differential equations of any order. The examples are taken from physics and include Kuramoto-Sivashinsky and complex Ginzburg-Landau equations.

Higher Order, Polar and Sz.-Nagy's Generalized Derivatives of Random Polynomials with Independent and Identically Distributed Zeros on the Unit Circle

For random polynomials with i.i.d. (independent and identically distribu-ted) zeros following any common probability distribution $μ$ with support contained in the unit circle, the empirical measures of the zeros of their first and higher order derivatives will be proved to converge weakly to $μ$ a.s. (almost sure(ly)). This, in particular, completes a recent work of Subramanian on the first order derivative case where $μ$ was assumed to be non-uniform. The same a.s. weak convergence will also be shown for polar and Sz.-Nagy's generalized derivatives, on some mild conditions.

Finiteness of Fixed Equilibrium Configurations of Point Vortices in the Plane with Background Flow

For a dynamic system consisting of $n$ point vortices in an ideal plane fluid with a steady, incompressible and} irrotational background flow, a more physically significant definition of a fixed equilibrium configuration is suggested. Under this new definition, if the complex polynomial $w$ that determines the aforesaid background flow is non-constant, we have found an attainable generic upper bound \smash{$\fr{(m+n-1)!}{(m-1)!\,n_1!\cdots n_{i_0}!}$} for the number of fixed equilibrium configurations. Here, $m=°w$, $i_0$ is the number of species, and each $n_i$ is the number of vortices in a species. We transform the rational function system arisen from} fixed equilibria into a polynomial system, whose form is good enough to apply the BKK theory (named after D. N. Bernshtein, A. G. Khovanskii and A. G. Kushnirenko) to show the finiteness of its number of solutions. Having this finiteness, the required bound follows from Bézout's theorem or the BKK root count by T. Y. Li and X.-S. Wang.}
