Chern-Simons Splitting of 2+1D Pure Yang-Mills Theory at Large Distances

Geometric quantization of 2+1 dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory is studied with focusing on finite large scales. It is previously shown that (Yildirim, 2015, Int. J. Mod. Phys A, 30(7), 1550034), topologically massive Yang-Mills theory exhibits a Chern-Simons splitting behavior at large scales, similar to the topologically massive AdS gravity model in its near Chern-Simons limit. This splitting occurs as two Chern-Simons parts with levels $+k/2$ each, where $k$ is the original Chern-Simons level in the Lagrangian. In the pure Chern-Simons limit, split parts combine to give the original Chern-Simons level. The opposite limit of the gravitational analogue gives an Einstein-Hilbert term with a negative cosmological constant, which can be written as a two half Chern-Simons terms with opposite signs. With this motivation, the gauge theory analogue of this limit is investigated, showing that at finite large distances pure Yang-Mills theory acts like a topological theory that consists of split Chern-Simons parts with levels $+k/2$ and $-k/2$. At very large distances these split terms cancel, making the Yang-Mills theory trivial, as expected, due to the existence of a mass gap. Gauge invariance of the split parts is discussed. It is also shown that this splitting behavior can be exploited to incorporate link invariants of knot theory, just like in the topologically massive case.

Topologically Massive Yang-Mills Theory and Link Invariants (Thesis)

In this thesis, topologically massive Yang-Mills theory is studied in the framework of geometric quantization. This theory has a mass gap that is proportional to the topological mass $m$. Thus, Yang-Mills contribution decays exponentially at very large distances compared to $1/m$, leaving a pure Chern-Simons theory with level number $k$. The focus of this research is the $near$ Chern-Simons limit of the theory, where the distance is large enough to give an almost topological theory, with a small contribution from the Yang-Mills term. It is shown that this almost topological theory consists of two copies of Chern-Simons with level number $k/2$, very similar to the Chern-Simons splitting of topologically massive AdS gravity model. As $m$ approaches to infinity, the split parts add up to give the original Chern-Simons term with level $k$. Also, gauge invariance of the split Chern-Simons theories is discussed for odd values of $k$. Furthermore, a relation between the observables of topologically massive Yang-Mills theory and Chern-Simons theory is obtained. It is shown that one of the two split Chern-Simons pieces is associated with Wilson loops while the other with 't Hooft loops. This allows one to use skein relations to calculate topologically massive Yang-Mills theory observables in the near Chern-Simons limit. Finally, motivated with the topologically massive AdS gravity model, Chern-Simons splitting concept is extended to pure Yang-Mills theory at large distances. It is shown that pure Yang-Mills theory acts like two Chern-Simons theories with level numbers $k/2$ and $-k/2$ at large scales. At very large scales, these two terms cancel to make the theory trivial, as required by the existence of a mass gap.

On Quantum Microstates in the Near Extremal, Near Horizon Kerr Geometry

We study the thermodynamics of near horizon near extremal Kerr (NHNEK) geometry within the framework of $AdS_2/CFT_1$ correspondence. We start by shifting the horizon of near horizon extremal Kerr (NHEK) geometry by a general finite mass. While this shift does not alter the geometry in that the resulting classical solution is still diffeomorphic to the NHEK solution, it does lead to a quantum theory different from that of NHEK. We obtain this quantum theory by means of a Robinson-Wilczek two-dimensional Kaluza-Klein reduction which enables us to introduce a finite regulator on the $AdS_2$ boundary and compute the full asymptotic symmetry group of the two-dimensional quantum conformal field theory on the respective $AdS_2$ boundary. The s-wave contribution of the energy-momentum-tensor of this conformal field theory, together with the asymptotic symmetries, generate a Virasoro algebra with a calculable center, which agrees with the standard Kerr/$CFT$ result, and a non-vanishing lowest Virasoro eigenmode. The central charge and lowest eigenmode produce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and Hawking temperature for NHNEK.

Chern-Simons Splitting of 2+1D Gauge Theories

Geometric quantization of topologically massive and pure Yang- Mills theories is studied in 2+1 dimensions. Analogous to the topologically massive AdS gravity model, both topologically massive Yang-Mills and pure Yang-Mills theories are shown to exhibit a Chern-Simons splitting behavior at large distances. It is also shown that, this large distance topological behavior can be further used to incorporate link invariants.

Topologically Massive Yang-Mills Theory and Link Invariants

Topologically massive Yang-Mills theory is studied in the framework of geometric quantization. Since this theory has a mass gap proportional to the topological mass m, Yang-Mills contribution decays exponentially at very large distances compared to 1/m, leaving a pure Chern-Simons theory with level number k. In this paper, the near Chern-Simons limit is studied where the distance is large enough to give an almost topological theory, with a small contribution from the Yang-Mills term. It is shown that this almost topological theory consists of two copies of Chern-Simons with level number k/2, very similar to the Chern-Simons splitting of topologically massive AdS gravity. Also, gauge invariance of these half-Chern-Simons theories is discussed. As m approaches to infinity, the split parts add up to give the original Chern-Simons term with level k. Reduction of the phase space is discussed in this limit. Finally, a relation between the observables of topologically massive Yang-Mills theory and Chern-Simons theory is shown. One of the two split Chern-Simons pieces is shown to be associated with Wilson loops while the other with 't Hooft loops. This allows one to use skein relations to calculate topologically massive Yang-Mills theory observables in the near Chern-Simons limit.

Near-Extremal Kerr AdS2xS2 Solution and Black-Hole/Near-Horizion-CFT Duality

We study the thermodynamics of the near horizon of near extremal Kerr geometry (near-NHEK) within an AdS2/CFT1 correspondence. We do this by shifting the horizon by a general finite mass, which does not alter the geometry and the resulting solution is still diffeomorphic to NHEK, however it allows for a Robertson Wilczek two dimensional Kaluza-Klein reduction and the introduction of a finite regulator on the AdS2 boundary. The resulting asymptotic symmetry group of the two dimensional Kaluza-Klein reduction leads to a non-vanishing quantum conformal field theory on the respective AdS2 boundary. The s-wave contribution of the energy-momentum-tensor of the CFT, together with the asymptotic symmetries, generate a Virasoro algebra with calculable center and non-vanishing lowest Virasoro eigen-mode. The central charge and lowest eigen-mode reproduce the near-NHEK Bekenstein-Hawking entropy via the statistical Cardy Formula and our derived central charge agrees with the standard Kerr/CFT Correspondence. We also compute the Hawking temperature of the shifted near-NHEK by analyzing quantum holomorphic fluxes of the Robinson and Wilczek two dimensional analogue fields.

A Near Horizon CFT Dual for Kerr-Newman-$AdS$

We show that the near horizon regime of a Kerr-Newman-$AdS$ (KN$AdS$) black hole, given by its two dimensional analogue $a la$ Robinson and Wilczek (2005 Phys. Rev. Lett. 95 011303), is asymptotically $AdS_2$ and dual to a one dimensional quantum conformal field theory (CFT). The s-wave contribution of the resulting CFT's energy-momentum-tensor together with the asymptotic symmetries, generate a centrally extended Virasoro algebra, whose central charge reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy via Cardy's Formula. Our derived central charge also agrees with the near extremal Kerr/CFT Correspondence (2009 Phys. Rev. D 80, 124008) in the appropriate limits. We also compute the Hawking temperature of the KN$AdS$ black hole by coupling its Robinson and Wilczek two dimensional analogue (RW2DA) to conformal matter.

Entropy and Temperature From Black-Hole/Near-Horizon-CFT Duality

We construct a 2-dimensional CFT, in the form of a Liouville theory, in the near horizon limit of 4- and 3-dimensional black holes. The near horizon CFT assumes 2-dimensional black hole solutions first introduced by Christensen and Fulling and expanded to a greater class of black holes via Robinson and Wilczek. The 2-dimensional black holes admit a Diff($S^1$) subalgebra, which upon quantization in the horizon limit becomes Virasoro with calculable central charge. This charge and lowest Virasoro eigen-mode reproduce the correct Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the 4- and 3-dimensional black holes via the known Cardy formula. Furthermore, the 2-dimensional CFT's energy momentum tensor is anomalous. However, In the horizon limit the energy momentum tensor becomes holomorphic equaling the Hawking flux of the 4- and 3-dimensional black holes. This encoding of both entropy and temperature provides a uniformity in the calculation of black hole thermodynamic and statistical quantities for the non local effective action approach.
