Twistor Constructions for Higher-spin Extensions of (Self-dual) Yang-Mills

We present the inverse Penrose transform (the map from spacetime to twistor space) for self-dual Yang-Mills (SDYM) and its higher-spin extensions on a flat background. The twistor action for the higher-spin extension of SDYM (HS-SDYM) is of BF-type. By considering a deformation away from the self-dual sector of HS-SDYM, we discover a new action that describes a higher-spin extension of Yang-Mills theory (HS-YM). The twistor action for HS-YM is a straightforward generalization of the Yang-Mills one.

Higher Spin Gravity: Quantization and Algebraic Structures

The aim of this thesis is to explore the quantum aspects of Higher Spin Gravities (HSGRAs) and their underlining algebraic structures. We give a concise review of HSGRAs followed by three chapters with original results. The first chapter is dedicated to the study of the vacuum one-loop correction of holographic HSGRAs in Anti-de Sitter space. We show that there is a remarkable agreement between the $F$-energy of HSGRAs in the bulk and the predictions coming from the dual CFTs in integer dimensions. We extend this result to continuous dimension and show that vacuum one-loop corrections in HSGRA reproduce the $F$-energy of the Wilson-Fisher CFT in $4-ε$ dimension. The second part of the thesis explores the quantum properties of Chiral Higher Spin Gravity - a closed subsector of any other HSGRA in four dimensions. We show that Chiral Theory is UV-finite at one-loop. Moreover, there is an interesting relation between one-loop amplitudes in Chiral HSGRA and the self-dual subsector of QCD. The last part of the thesis is devoted to algebraic structures of HSGRAs. As an application, we construct a formal bosonic HSGRA in $AdS_5$ in two different ways: by deforming the Joseph relations and by deforming the quasi-conformal realization.

One-loop Finiteness of Chiral Higher Spin Gravity

One of the main ideas behind Higher Spin Gravities is that the higher spin symmetry is expected to leave no room for counterterms, thereby eliminating UV divergences that make the pure gravity non-renormalizable. However, until recently it has not been clear if such a mechanism is realized. We show that Chiral Higher Spin Gravity is one-loop finite, the crucial point being that all one-loop $S$-matrix elements are UV-convergent despite the fact that the theory is naively not renormalizable by power counting. For any number of legs the one-loop $S$-matrix elements coincide with all-plus helicity one-loop amplitudes in pure QCD and SDYM, modulo a certain higher spin dressing, which is an unusual relation between the non-gravitational theories and a higher spin gravity.

A Stringy theory in three dimensions and Massive Higher Spins

An example of a consistent theory with massive higher spin fields is constructed in flat space-time of dimension three. The action is written in the light-cone gauge. The theory has certain stringy features, e.g. its spectrum is unbounded in spin and mass, the theory admits Chan-Paton factors. The quartic and the higher tree-level amplitudes vanish, which softens the UV behaviour at the loop level and provides a new mechanism of how massive higher spin states can resolve the Quantum Gravity Problem.

More on Quantum Chiral Higher Spin Gravity

Chiral Higher Spin Gravity is unique in being the smallest higher spin extension of gravity and in having a simple local action both in flat and (anti)-de Sitter spaces. It must be a closed subsector of any other higher spin theory in four dimensions, which makes it an important building block and benchmark. Using the flat space version for simplicity, we perform a thorough study of quantum corrections in Chiral Theory, which strengthen our earlier results arXiv:1805.00048. Even though the interactions are naively non-renormalizable, we show that there are no UV-divergences in two-, three- and four-point amplitudes at one loop thanks to the higher spin symmetry. We also give arguments that the AdS Chiral Theory should exhibit similar properties. It is shown that Chiral Theory admits Yang-Mills gaugings with $U(N)$, $SO(N)$ and $USp(N)$ groups, which is reminiscent of the Chan-Paton symmetry in string theory.

Towards Massless Sector of Tensionless Strings on $AdS_5$

{A} Higher Spin Gravity in five dimensions is constructed. It was shown recently that constructing formally consistent classical equations of motion of higher spin gravities is equivalent to finding a certain deformation of a given higher spin algebra. A strong homotopy algebra encoding the interaction vertices then follows. We propose two different and novel realizations of the deformed higher spin algebra in the case of five dimensions: one in terms of the universal enveloping algebra of $su(2,2)$ and the other by means of oscillator variables. Both the new realizations admit supersymmetric extensions and the $\mathcal{N}=8$ case underlies the massless sector of tensionless strings.

On Non-Perturbative Unitarity in Gravitational Scattering

We argue that the tree-level graviton-scalar scattering in the Regge limit is unitarized by non-perturbative effects within General Relativity. At Planckian energy the back reaction of the incoming graviton on the background geometry produces a non-perturbative plane wave which, in turn, softens the UV-behavior. Our amplitude then interpolates between the perturbative graviton-scalar scattering at low energy and scattering on a classical plane wave in the Regge limit.

Attention-Gated Graph Convolutions for Extracting Drug Interaction Information from Drug Labels

Preventable adverse events as a result of medical errors present a growing concern in the healthcare system. As drug-drug interactions (DDIs) may lead to preventable adverse events, being able to extract DDIs from drug labels into a machine-processable form is an important step toward effective dissemination of drug safety information. In this study, we tackle the problem of jointly extracting drugs and their interactions, including interaction outcome, from drug labels. Our deep learning approach entails composing various intermediate representations including sequence and graph based context, where the latter is derived using graph convolutions (GC) with a novel attention-based gating mechanism (holistically called GCA). These representations are then composed in meaningful ways to handle all subtasks jointly. To overcome scarcity in training data, we additionally propose transfer learning by pre-training on related DDI data. Our model is trained and evaluated on the 2018 TAC DDI corpus. Our GCA model in conjunction with transfer learning performs at 39.20% F1 and 26.09% F1 on entity recognition (ER) and relation extraction (RE) respectively on the first official test set and at 45.30% F1 and 27.87% F1 on ER and RE respectively on the second official test set corresponding to an improvement over our prior best results by up to 6 absolute F1 points. After controlling for available training data, our model exhibits state-of-the-art performance by improving over the next comparable best outcome by roughly three F1 points in ER and 1.5 F1 points in RE evaluation across two official test sets.

Neural Metric Learning for Fast End-to-End Relation Extraction

Relation extraction (RE) is an indispensable information extraction task in several disciplines. RE models typically assume that named entity recognition (NER) is already performed in a previous step by another independent model. Several recent efforts, under the theme of end-to-end RE, seek to exploit inter-task correlations by modeling both NER and RE tasks jointly. Earlier work in this area commonly reduces the task to a table-filling problem wherein an additional expensive decoding step involving beam search is applied to obtain globally consistent cell labels. In efforts that do not employ table-filling, global optimization in the form of CRFs with Viterbi decoding for the NER component is still necessary for competitive performance. We introduce a novel neural architecture utilizing the table structure, based on repeated applications of 2D convolutions for pooling local dependency and metric-based features, that improves on the state-of-the-art without the need for global optimization. We validate our model on the ADE and CoNLL04 datasets for end-to-end RE and demonstrate $\approx 1\%$ gain (in F-score) over prior best results with training and testing times that are seven to ten times faster --- the latter highly advantageous for time-sensitive end user applications.

A Multi-Task Learning Framework for Extracting Drugs and Their Interactions from Drug Labels

Preventable adverse drug reactions as a result of medical errors present a growing concern in modern medicine. As drug-drug interactions (DDIs) may cause adverse reactions, being able to extracting DDIs from drug labels into machine-readable form is an important effort in effectively deploying drug safety information. The DDI track of TAC 2018 introduces two large hand-annotated test sets for the task of extracting DDIs from structured product labels with linkage to standard terminologies. Herein, we describe our approach to tackling tasks one and two of the DDI track, which corresponds to named entity recognition (NER) and sentence-level relation extraction respectively. Namely, our approach resembles a multi-task learning framework designed to jointly model various sub-tasks including NER and interaction type and outcome prediction. On NER, our system ranked second (among eight teams) at 33.00% and 38.25% F1 on Test Sets 1 and 2 respectively. On relation extraction, our system ranked second (among four teams) at 21.59% and 23.55% on Test Sets 1 and 2 respectively.

Quantum Chiral Higher Spin Gravity

An example of a higher spin gravity in four-dimensional flat space has recently been constructed in arXiv:1609.04655 [hep-th]. This theory is chiral and the action is written in the light-cone gauge. The theory has certain stringy features, e.g. admits Chan-Paton factors. We show that the theory is consistent, both at the classical and quantum level. Even though the interactions are non-trivial, due to the coupling conspiracy all tree level amplitudes vanish on-shell. The loop corrections also vanish. Therefore, the full quantum S-matrix is one and the theory is consistent with the numerous no-go theorems. This provides the first example of a (quantum) interacting higher spin gravity with an action. We argue that higher spin gravities in AdS space should display the same features.

Exceptional F(4) Higher-Spin Theory in AdS(6) at One-Loop and other Tests of Duality

We study the higher-spin gauge theory in six-dimensional anti-de Sitter space $AdS_6$ that is based on the exceptional Lie superalgebra $F(4)$. The relevant higher-spin algebra was constructed in arXiv:1409.2185 [hep-th]. We determine the spectrum of the theory and show that it contains the physical fields of the Romans $F(4)$ gauged supergravity. The full spectrum consists of an infinite tower of unitary supermultiplets of $F(4)$ which extend the Romans multiplet to higher spins plus a single short supermultiplet. Motivated by applications to this novel supersymmetric higher-spin theory as well as to other theories, we extend the known one-loop tests of $AdS/CFT$ duality in various directions. The spectral zeta-function is derived for the most general case of fermionic and mixed-symmetry fields, which allows one to test the Type-A and B theories and supersymmetric extensions thereof in any dimension. We also study higher-spin doubletons and partially-massless fields. While most of the tests are successfully passed, the Type-B theory in all even dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetimes presents an interesting puzzle: the free energy as computed from the bulk is not equal to that of the free fermion on the CFT side, though there is some systematics to the discrepancy.

AdS/CFT in Fractional Dimension and Higher Spin Gravity at One Loop

Large-$N$, $ε$-expansion or the conformal bootstrap allow one to make sense of some of conformal field theories in non-integer dimension, which suggests that AdS/CFT may also extend to fractional dimensions. It was shown recently that the sphere free energy and the $a$-anomaly coefficient of the free scalar field can be reproduced as a one-loop effect in the dual higher-spin theory in a number of integer dimensions. We extend this result to all integer and also to fractional dimensions. Upon changing the boundary conditions in the higher-spin theory the sphere free energy of the large-$N$ Wilson-Fisher CFT can also be reproduced from the higher-spin side.
