Second-order transverse magnetic anisotropy induced by disorders in the single-molecule magnet Mn12

For the single-molecule magnet Mn12, Cornia et al. recently proposed that solvent molecules may cause the quantum tunneling that requires a lower symmetry than S4. However, magnetic quantum tunneling and electron paramagnetic resonance experiments suggested that the proposed theory may not correspond to the measurements. In this regard, we consider positional disorder induced by the solvent molecules and orientational disorder by the methyl groups of a Mn12 molecule. We calculate, within density-functional theory, the second-order transverse magnetic anisotropy parameter E and an easy-axis tilting angle induced by the positional disorder and the E value by the orientational disorder. We also calculate the local magnetic anisotropy and the local easy axis for each inequivalent Mn site in different environments to investigate their effects on the global E value. We find that the hydrogen bonding between a Mn12 molecule and the solvent molecule is crucial to obtain a substantial E value and that the E value increases upon geometry relaxations. Our calculations on relaxed geometries show that the largest calculated E value is 0.016 K and that the largest tilting angle is 0.5 degrees. Our largest E value is comparable to experimental results but larger than Cornia et al.'s.

Electronic structure and rebonding in the onion-like As@Ni12@As20 cluster

We present the first ab initio study of the geometry, electronic structure, charged states, bonding and vibrational modes of the recently synthesized fullerene-like As@Ni12@As20 cluster which has icosahedral point symmetry [Science, 300, 778 (2003)]. We show that the molecule is vibrationally stable and will be electronically most stable in its -3 oxidation state in the condensed phase and in -2 state in the gas phase. We examine the bonding in this unusually structured molecule from charge transfer between atoms, infrared and Raman spectra, and charge density isosurfaces.

Electronic structure and magnetic anisotropy of the [Co_4(hmp)_4(CH_3OH)_4Cl_4] molecule

Accurate density-functional based calculations have been performed on the Co_4(hmp)_4(CH_3OH)_4Cl_4 molecular magnet where hmp is deprotonated hydroxymethyl pyridine. In addition to the experimentally observed staggered geometry, we identify two isomers, referred to as eclipsed and half-staggered/half-eclipsed, that are reasonably low in energy. Our calculations show that the magnetic anisotropy is strongly dependent on the pyridine-pyridine separation and that the three structures exhibit easy axis, easy plane and triaxial behavior. Other effects such as partial reprotonation of the hmp is considered.

Predicted Infrared and Raman Spectra for Neutral Ti_8C_12 Isomers

Using a density-functional based algorithm, the full IR and Raman spectra are calculated for the neutral Ti_8C_12 cluster assuming geometries of Th, Td, D2d and C3v symmetry. The Th pentagonal dodecahedron is found to be dynamically unstable. The calculated properties of the relaxed structure having C3v symmetry are found to be in excellent agreement with experimental gas phase infrared results, ionization potential and electron affinity measurements. Consequently, the results presented may be used as a reference for further experimental characterization using vibrational spectroscopy.

Stability, Electronic Structure and Vibrational Modes of Ti_8C_12 Dimer

We present our density functional results of the geometry, electronic structure and dissociation energy of Ti_8C_12 dimer. We show that as opposed to the currently held view that Ti_8C_12 are highly stable monodispersed clusters, the neutral Ti_8C_12 clusters form covalent bonds and form stable dimers. We determine that the Ti atoms bond weakly (0.9 eV/bond) to organic ligands such as ammonia. Alternatively the Met-Car dimer has a cohesive energy of 4.84 eV or approximately 1.2 eV per bond. While Met-Car dimers are stable, formation of these dimers may be quenched in an environment that contains a significant population of organic ligands. The ionization and dissociation energies of the dimer are of same order which prevents the observation of the dimer in the ion mass spectroscopy. The analysis of the vibrational frequencies show the lowest-energy structure to be dynamically stable. We also present infrared absorption and Raman scattering spectra of the Ti_8C_12 dimer.

Magnetic ordering, electronic structure and magnetic anisotropy energy in the high-spin Mn$_{10}$ single molecule magnet

We report the electronic structure and magnetic ordering of the single molecule magnet [Mn$_{10}$O$_{4}$(2,2'-biphenoxide)$_{4}$Br$_{12}$]$^{4-}$ based on first-principles all-electron density-functional calculations. We find that two of the ten core Mn atoms are coupled antiferromagnetically to the remaining eight, resulting in a ferrimagnetic ground state with total spin S=13. The calculated magnetic anisotropy barrier is found to be 9 K in good agreement with experiment. The presence of the Br anions impact the electronic structure and therefore the magnetic properties of the 10 Mn atoms. However, the electric field due to the negative charges has no significant effect on the magnetic anisotropy.

Full potential LAPW calculation of electron momentum density and related properties of Li

Electron momentum density and Compton profiles in Lithium along $<100 >$, $<110>$, and $<111>$ directions are calculated using Full-Potential Linear Augmented Plane Wave basis within generalized gradient approximation. The profiles have been corrected for correlations with Lam-Platzman formulation using self-consistent charge density. The first and second derivatives of Compton profiles are studied to investigate the Fermi surface breaks. Decent agreement is observed between recent experimental and our calculated values. Our values for the derivatives are found to be in better agreement with experiments than earlier theoretical results. Two-photon momentum density and one- and two-dimensional angular correlation of positron annihilation radiation are also calculated within the same formalism and including the electron-positron enhancement factor.
