Multiresolution analysis and Zygmund dilations

Zygmund dilations are a group of dilations lying in between the standard product theory and the one-parameter setting - in $\mathbb{R}^3 = \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}$ they are the dilations $(x_1, x_2, x_3) \mapsto (δ_1 x_1, δ_2 x_2, δ_1 δ_2 x_3)$. The dyadic multiresolution analysis and the related dyadic-probabilistic methods have been very impactful in the modern product singular integral theory. However, the multiresolution analysis has not been understood in the Zygmund dilation setting or in other modified product space settings. In this paper we develop this missing dyadic multiresolution analysis of Zygmund type, and justify its usefulness by bounding, on weighted spaces, a general class of singular integrals that are invariant under Zygmund dilations. We provide novel examples of Zygmund $A_p$ weights and Zygmund kernels showcasing the optimality of our kernel assumptions for weighted estimates.

Exotic Calderón-Zygmund operators

We study singular integral operators with kernels that are more singular than standard Calderón-Zygmund kernels, but less singular than bi-parameter product Calderón-Zygmund kernels. These kernels arise as restrictions to two dimensions of certain three-dimensional kernels adapted to so-called Zygmund dilations, which is part of our motivation for studying these objects. We make the case that such kernels can, in many ways, be seen as part of the extended realm of standard kernels by proving that they satisfy both a T1 theorem and commutator estimates in a form reminiscent of the corresponding results for standard Calderón-Zygmund kernels. However, we show that one-parameter weighted estimates, in general, fail.

Extrapolation of compactness on weighted spaces

Let $T$ be a linear operator that, for some $p_1\in(1,\infty)$, is bounded on $L^{p_1}(\tilde w)$ for all $\tilde w\in A_{p_1}(\mathbb R^d)$ and in addition compact on $L^{p_1}(w_1)$ for some $w_1\in A_{p_1}(\mathbb R^d)$. Then $T$ is bounded and compact on $L^p(w)$ for all $p\in(1,\infty)$ and all $w\in A_p(\mathbb R^d)$. This "compact version" of Rubio de Francia's celebrated weighted extrapolation theorem follows from a combination of results in the interpolation and extrapolation theory of weighted spaces on the one hand, and of compact operators on abstract spaces on the other hand. Moreover, generalizations of this extrapolation of compactness are obtained for operators that are bounded from one space to a different one ("off-diagonal estimates") or only in a limited range of the $L^p$ scale. As applications, we easily recover several recent results on the weighted compactness of commutators of singular integral operators, fractional integrals and pseudo-differential operators, and obtain new results about the weighted compactness of commutators of Bochner-Riesz multipliers.

Causal sparse domination of Beurling maximal regularity operators

We prove boundedness of Calderón-Zygmund operators acting in Banach functions spaces on domains, defined by the $L_1$ Carleson functional and $L_q$ ($1<q<\infty$) Whitney averages. For such bounds to hold, we assume that the operator maps towards the boundary of the domain. We obtain the Carleson estimates by proving a pointwise domination of the operator, by sparse operators with a causal structure. The work is motivated by maximal regularity estimates for elliptic PDEs and is related to one-sided weighted estimates for singular integrals.

Extrapolation of compactness on weighted spaces: Bilinear operators

In a previous paper, we obtained several "compact versions" of Rubio de Francia's weighted extrapolation theorem, which allowed us to extrapolate the compactness of linear operators from just one space to the full range of weighted Lebesgue spaces, where these operators are bounded. In this paper, we study the extrapolation of compactness for bilinear operators in terms of bilinear Muckenhoupt weights. As applications, we easily recover and improve earlier results on the weighted compactness of commutators of bilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators, bilinear fractional integrals and bilinear Fourier multipliers. More general versions of these results are recently due to Cao, Olivo and Yabuta (arXiv:2011.13191), whose approach depends on developing weighted versions of the Fréchet--Kolmogorov criterion of compactness, whereas we avoid this by relying on "softer" tools, which might have an independent interest in view of further extensions of the method.

Extrapolation of compactness on weighted spaces II: Off-diagonal and limited range estimates

In a previous paper by one of us, a "compact version" of Rubio de Francia's weighted extrapolation theorem was proved, which allows one to extrapolate the compactness of an operator from just one space to the full range of weighted spaces, where this operator is bounded. In this paper, we obtain generalizations of this extrapolation of compactness for operators that are bounded from one space to a different one ("off-diagonal estimates") or only in a limited range of the $L^p$ scale. As applications, we easily recover recent results on the weighted compactness of commutators of fractional integrals and pseudo-differential operators, and obtain new results about the weighted compactness of Bochner--Riesz multipliers.

An operator-valued T(1) theorem for symmetric singular integrals in UMD spaces

The natural BMO (bounded mean oscillation) conditions suggested by scalar-valued results are known to be insufficient for the boundedness of operator-valued paraproducts. Accordingly, the boundedness of operator-valued singular integrals has only been available under versions of the classical ``$T(1)\in BMO$'' assumptions that are not easily checkable. Recently, Hong, Liu and Mei (J. Funct. Anal. 2020) observed that the situation improves remarkably for singular integrals with a symmetry assumption, so that a classical $T(1)$ criterion still guarantees their $L^2$-boundedness on Hilbert space -valued functions. Here, these results are extended to general UMD (unconditional martingale differences) spaces with the same natural BMO condition for symmetrised paraproducts, and requiring in addition only the usual replacement of uniform bounds by $R$-bounds in the case of general singular integrals. In particular, under these assumptions, we obtain boundedness results on non-commutative $L^p$ spaces for all $1<p<\infty$, without the need to replace the domain or the target by a related non-commutative Hardy space as in the results of Hong et al. for $p\neq 2$.

Iterated commutators under a joint condition on the tuple of multiplying functions

We present a pair of joint conditions on the two functions $b_1,b_2$ strictly weaker than $b_1,b_2\in \operatorname{BMO}$ that almost characterize the $L^2$ boundedness of the iterated commutator $[b_2,[b_1,T]]$ of these functions and a Calderón-Zygmund operator $T.$ Namely, we sandwich this boundedness between two bisublinear mean oscillation conditions of which one is a slightly bumped up version of the other.

The local Tb theorem with rough test functions

We prove a local $Tb$ theorem under close to minimal (up to certain `buffering') integrability assumptions, conjectured by S. Hofmann (El Escorial, 2008): Every cube is assumed to support two non-degenerate functions $b^1_Q\in L^p$ and $b^2_Q\in L^q$ such that $1_{2Q}Tb^1_Q\in L^{q'}$ and $1_{2Q}T^*b^2_Q\in L^{p'}$, with appropriate uniformity and scaling of the norms. This is sufficient for the $L^2$-boundedness of the Calderon-Zygmund operator $T$, for any $p,q\in(1,\infty)$, a result previously unknown for simultaneously small values of $p$ and $q$. We obtain this as a corollary of a local $Tb$ theorem for the maximal truncations $T_{\#}$ and $(T^*)_{\#}$: for the $L^2$-boundedness of $T$, it suffices that $1_Q T_{\#}b^1_Q$ and $1_Q (T^*)_{\#}b^2_Q$ be uniformly in $L^0$. The proof builds on the technique of suppressed operators from the quantitative Vitushkin conjecture due to Nazarov-Treil-Volberg.

Off-diagonal estimates for bi-commutators

We study the bi-commutators $[T_1, [b, T_2]]$ of pointwise multiplication and Calderón-Zygmund operators, and characterize their $L^{p_1}L^{p_2} \to L^{q_1}L^{q_2}$ boundedness for several off-diagonal regimes of the mixed-norm integrability exponents $(p_1,p_2)\neq(q_1,q_2)$. The strategy is based on a bi-parameter version of the recent approximate weak factorization method.

The sharp square function estimate with matrix weight

We prove the matrix $A_2$ conjecture for the dyadic square function, that is, a norm estimate of the matrix weighted square function, where the focus is on the sharp linear dependence on the matrix $A_2$ constant in the estimate. Moreover, we give a mixed estimate in terms of $A_2$ and $A_{\infty}$ constants. Key is a sparse domination of a process inspired by the integrated form of the matrix--weighted square function.

A Two-weight inequality between $L^p(\ell^2)$ and $L^p$

We consider boundedness of a certain positive dyadic operator $$ T^σ\colon L^p(σ; \ \! \ell^2) \to L^p(ω), $$ that arose during our attempts to develop a two-weight theory for the Hilbert transform in $L^p$. Boundedness of $T^σ$ is characterized when $p \in [2, \infty)$ in terms of certain testing conditions. This requires a new Carleson-type embedding theorem that is also proved.

The space $JN_p$: nontriviality and duality

We study a function space $JN_p$ based on a condition introduced by John and Nirenberg as a variant of BMO. It is known that $L^p\subset JN_{p}\subsetneq L^{p,\infty}$, but otherwise the structure of $JN_p$ is largely a mystery. Our first main result is the construction of a function that belongs to $JN_p$ but not $L^p$, showing that the two spaces are not the same. Nevertheless, we prove that for monotone functions, the classes $JN_{p}$ and $L^p$ do coincide. Our second main result describes $JN_p$ as the dual of a new Hardy kind of space $HK_{p'}$.

Vector-valued local approximation spaces

We prove that for every Banach space $Y$, the Besov spaces of functions from the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space to $Y$ agree with suitable local approximation spaces with equivalent norms. In addition, we prove that the Sobolev spaces of type $q$ are continuously embedded in the Besov spaces of the same type if and only if $Y$ has martingale cotype $q$. We interpret this as an extension of earlier results of Xu (1998), and Martínez, Torrea and Xu (2006). These two results combined give the characterization that $Y$ admits an equivalent norm with modulus of convexity of power type $q$ if and only if weakly differentiable functions have good local approximations with polynomials.

Multi-parameter estimates via operator-valued shifts

We prove new results for multi-parameter singular integrals. For example, we prove that bi-parameter singular integrals in $\mathbb{R}^{n+m}$ satisfying natural $T1$ type conditions map $L^q(\mathbb{R}^n; L^p(\mathbb{R}^m;E))$ to $L^q(\mathbb{R}^n; L^p(\mathbb{R}^m;E))$ for all $p,q \in (1,\infty)$ and UMD function lattices $E$. This result is shown to hold even in the $\mathcal{R}$-boundedness sense for all suitable families of bi-parameter singular integrals. On the technique side we demonstrate how many dyadic multi-parameter operators can be bounded by using, and further developing, the theory of operator-valued dyadic shifts. Even in the scalar-valued case this is an efficient way to bound the various so called partial paraproducts, which are key operators appearing in the multi-parameter representation theorems. Our proofs also entail verifying the $\mathcal{R}$-boundedness of various families of multi-parameter paraproducts.

Quantitative affine approximation for UMD targets

It is shown here that if $(Y,\|\cdot\|_Y)$ is a Banach space in which martingale differences are unconditional (a UMD Banach space) then there exists $c=c(Y)\in (0,\infty)$ with the following property. For every $n\in \mathbb{N}$ and $\varepsilon\in (0,1/2]$, if $(X,\|\cdot\|_X)$ is an $n$-dimensional normed space with unit ball $B_X$ and $f:B_X\to Y$ is a $1$-Lipschitz function then there exists an affine mapping $Λ:X\to Y$ and a sub-ball $B^*=y+ρB_X\subseteq B_X$ of radius $ρ\ge \exp(-(1/\varepsilon)^{cn})$ such that $\|f(x)-Λ(x)\|_Y\le \varepsilon ρ$ for all $x\in B^*$. This estimate on the macroscopic scale of affine approximability of vector-valued Lipschitz functions is an asymptotic improvement (as $n\to \infty$) over the best previously known bound even when $X$ is $\mathbb{R}^n$ equipped with the Euclidean norm and $Y$ is a Hilbert space.

Heat flow and quantitative differentiation

For every Banach space $(Y,\|\cdot\|_Y)$ that admits an equivalent uniformly convex norm we prove that there exists $c=c(Y)\in (0,\infty)$ with the following property. Suppose that $n\in \mathbb{N}$ and that $X$ is an $n$-dimensional normed space with unit ball $B_X$. Then for every $1$-Lipschitz function $f:B_X\to Y$ and for every $\varepsilon\in (0,1/2]$ there exists a radius $r\ge\exp(-1/\varepsilon^{cn})$, a point $x\in B_X$ with $x+rB_X\subset B_X$, and an affine mapping $Λ:X\to Y$ such that $\|f(y)-Λ(y)\|_Y\le \varepsilon r$ for every $y\in x+rB_X$.
