Operator-valued dyadic shifts and the T(1) theorem

In this paper we extend dyadic shifts and the dyadic representation theorem to an operator-valued setting: We first define operator-valued dyadic shifts and prove that they are bounded. We then extend the dyadic representation theorem, which states that every scalar-valued Calderón-Zygmund operator can be represented as a series of dyadic shifts and paraproducts averaged over randomized dyadic systems, to operator-valued Calderón-Zygmund operators. As a corollary, we obtain another proof of the operator-valued, global T(1) theorem. We work in the setting of integral operators that have R-bounded operator-valued kernels and act on functions taking values in UMD-spaces. The domain of the functions is the Euclidean space equipped with the Lebesgue measure. In addition, we give new proofs for the following known theorems: Boundedness of the dyadic (operator-valued) paraproduct, a variant of Pythagoras' theorem for (vector-valued) functions adapted to a sparse collection of dyadic cubes, and a decoupling inequality for (UMD-valued) martingale differences.

A variation norm Carleson theorem for vector-valued Walsh-Fourier series

We prove a variation norm Carleson theorem for Walsh-Fourier series of functions with values in a UMD Banach space. Our only hypothesis on the Banach space is that it has finite tile-type, a notion introduced by Hytönen and Lacey. Given q \geq 2 we show that, if the space X has tile-type t for all t>q, then the r-variation of the Walsh-Fourier sums of any function f \in L^p ([0,1) ; X) belongs to L^p, whenever q q. For intermediate spaces, i.e. spaces X= [Y,H]_s which are complex interpolation spaces between some UMD space Y and a Hilbert space H, the tile-type is q=2/s. We show that in this case the variation norm Carleson theorem remains true for all r > q in the larger range p > (2r/q)'.

The A_2 theorem with the Dini condition

Let $T$ be an $L^2$-bounded operator having an $ω$-Calderón--Zygmund kernel $K$ with a modulus of continuity $ω$. If $ω$ satisfied the Dini condition $\int_0^1ω(t)\ud t/t<\infty$, then $T$ satisfies the $A_2$ theorem $$ \Norm{Tf}{L^2(w)}\lesssim [w]_{A_2}\Norm{f}{L^2(w)} $$ and many related estimates, as a consequence of a domination by dyadic operators.

The A_2 theorem: Remarks and complements

I give a mini-survey of several approaches to the $A_2$ theorem, biased towards the "corona" rather than the "Bellman" side of the coin. There are two new results (a streamlined form of Lerner's local oscillation formula, and the sharpness of the linear-in-complexity weak $(1,1)$ bound for dyadic shifts) and two new proofs of known results (the $A_p$--$A_\infty$ testing conditions, and the two-weight $T1$ theorem for positive dyadic operators).

The A_2 theorem and the local oscillation decomposition for Banach space valued functions

We prove that the operator norm of every Banach space valued Calderon-Zygmund operator T on the weighted Lebesgue-Bochner space depends linearly on the Muckenhoupt A_2 characteristic of the weight. In parallel with the proof of the real-valued case, the proof is based on pointwise dominating every Banach space valued Calderon-Zygmund operator by a series of positive dyadic shifts. In common with the real-valued case, the pointwise dyadic domination relies on Lerner's local oscillation decomposition formula, which we extend from real-valued functions to Banach space valued functions. The extension of Lerner's local oscillation decomposition formula is based on a Banach space valued generalization of the notion of median.

The Vector Valued Quartile Operator

Certain vector-valued inequalities are shown to hold for a Walsh analog of the bilinear Hilbert transform. These extensions are phrased in terms of a recent notion of quartile type of a UMD (Unconditional Martingale Differences) Banach space X. Every known UMD Banach space has finite quartile type, and it was recently shown that the Walsh analog of Carleson's Theorem holds under a closely related assumption of finite tile type. For a Walsh model of the bilinear Hilbert transform however, the quartile type should be sufficiently close to that of a Hilbert space for our results to hold. A full set of inequalities is quantified in terms of quartile type.

Pointwise convergence of vector-valued Fourier series

We prove a vector-valued version of Carleson's theorem: Let Y=[X,H]_t be a complex interpolation space between a UMD space X and a Hilbert space H. For p\in(1,\infty) and f\in L^p(T;Y), the partial sums of the Fourier series of f converge to f pointwise almost everywhere. Apparently, all known examples of UMD spaces are of this intermediate form Y=[X,H]_t. In particular, we answer affirmatively a question of Rubio de Francia on the pointwise convergence of Fourier series of Schatten class valued functions.

Non-probabilistic proof of the A_2 theorem, and sharp weighted bounds for the q-variation of singular integrals

Any Calderon-Zygmund operator T is pointwise dominated by a convergent sum of positive dyadic operators. We give an elementary self-contained proof of this fact, which is simpler than the probabilistic arguments used for all previous results in this direction. Our argument also applies to the q-variation of certain Calderon-Zygmund operators, a stronger nonlinearity than the maximal truncations. As an application, we obtain new sharp weighted inequalities.

Pointwise convergence of Walsh--Fourier series of vector-valued functions

We prove a version of Carleson's Theorem in the Walsh model for vector-valued functions: For $1<p< \infty$, and a UMD space $Y$, the Walsh-Fourier series of $f \in L ^{p}(0,1;Y)$ converges pointwise, provided that $Y$ is a complex interpolation space $Y=[X,H]_θ$ between another UMD space $X$ and a Hilbert space $H$, for some $θ\in(0,1)$. Apparently, all known examples of UMD spaces satisfy this condition.

The local non-homogeneous Tb theorem for vector-valued functions

We extend the local non-homogeneous Tb theorem of Nazarov, Treil and Volberg to the setting of singular integrals with operator-valued kernel that act on vector-valued functions. Here, `vector-valued' means `taking values in a function lattice with the UMD (unconditional martingale differences) property'. A similar extension (but for general UMD spaces rather than UMD lattices) of Nazarov-Treil-Volberg's global non-homogeneous Tb theorem was achieved earlier by the first author, and it has found applications in the work of Mayboroda and Volberg on square-functions and rectifiability. Our local version requires several elaborations of the previous techniques, and raises new questions about the limits of the vector-valued theory.

Foundations of vector-valued singular integrals revisited---with random dyadic cubes

The vector-valued $T(1)$ theorem due to Figiel, and a certain square function estimate of Bourgain for translations of functions with a limited frequency spectrum, are two cornerstones of harmonic analysis in UMD spaces. In this paper, a simplified approach to these results is presented, exploiting Nazarov, Treil and Volberg's method of random dyadic cubes, which allows to circumvent the most subtle parts of the original arguments.

Weak and Strong-type estimates for Haar Shift Operators: Sharp power on the $A_p$ characteristic

As a corollary to our main result we deduce sharp A_p$ inequalities for T being either the Hilbert transform in dimension d=1, the Beurling transform in dimension d=2, or a Riesz transform in any dimension d\ge 2. For T_{\ast} the maximal truncations of these operators, we prove the sharp A_p weighted weak and strong-type L ^{p} (w) inequalities, for all 1<p<\infty. Key elements of the proof are (1) extrapolation (2) a recent argument for the A_2 bound in the untruncated case, an argument of Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera. (3) a weak-L^1 estimate for duals of maximal truncations. And (4) recent characterizations of the two-weight inequalities for strong and weak type inequalities, due to Lacey-Sawyer-Uriate-Tuero.

Weak and Strong type $ A_p$ Estimates for Calderón-Zygmund Operators

For a Calderon-Zygmund operator T on d-dimensional space, that has a sufficiently smooth kernel, we prove that for any 1< p \le 2, and weight w in A_p, that the maximal truncations T_* of T map L^p(w) to weak-L^p(w), with norm bounded by the A_p characteristic of w to the first power. This result combined with the (deep) recent result of Perez-Treil-Volberg, shows that the strong-type of T on L^2(w) is bounded by A_2 characteristic of w to the first power. (It is well-known that L^2 is the critical case for the strong type estimate.) Both results are sharp, aside from the number of derivatives imposed on the kernel of the operator. The proof uses the full structure theory of Calderon-Zygmund Operators, reduction to testing conditions, and a Corona argument.

Weak And Strong Type Estimates for Maximal Truncations of Calderón-Zygmund Operators on $ A_p$ Weighted Spaces

For 1<p< \infty, weight w \in A_p, and any L ^2 -bounded Calderón-Zygmund operator T, we show that there is a constant C(T,P) so that we prove the sharp norm dependence on T_#, the maximal truncations of T, in both weak and strong type L^p(w) norms. Namely, for the weak type norm, T_# maps L^p(w) to weak-L^p(w) with norm at most \|w\|_{A_p}. And for the strong type norm, the norm estimate is \|w\|_{A_p}^{\max(1, (p-1) ^{-1})}. These estimates are not improvable in the power of \lVert w\rVert_{A_p}. Our argument follows the outlines of the arguments of Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera (Math.\ Ann.\ 2010) and Hytönen-Pérez-Treil-Volberg (arXiv, 2010) with new ingredients, including a weak-type estimate for certain duals of T_#, and sufficient conditions for two weight inequalities in L ^{p} for T_#. Our proof does not rely upon extrapolation.

The sharp weighted bound for general Calderon-Zygmund operators

For a general Calderon-Zygmund operator $T$ on $R^N$, it is shown that $\|Tf\|_{L^2(w)}\leq C(T)\|w\|_{A_2}\|f\|_{L^2(w)}$ for all Muckenhoupt weights $w\in A_2$. This optimal estimate was known as the $A_2$ conjecture. A recent result of Perez-Treil-Volberg reduced the problem to a testing condition on indicator functions, which is verified in this paper. The proof consists of the following elements: (i) a variant of the Nazarov-Treil-Volberg method of random dyadic systems with just one random system and completely without bad parts; (ii) a resulting representation of a general Calderon-Zygmund operator as an average of dyadic shifts; and (iii) improvements of the Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera estimates for these dyadic shifts, which allow summing up the series in the obtained representation.

Pseudo-localisation of singular integrals in L^p

As a step in developing a non-commutative Calderon-Zygmund theory, J. Parcet (J. Funct. Anal., 2009) established a new pseudo-localisation principle for classical singular integrals, showing that Tf has small L^2 norm outside a set which only depends on f in L^2 but not on the arbitrary normalised Calderon-Zygmund operator T. Parcet also asked if a similar result holds true in L^p for 1 < p < infinity. This is answered in the affirmative in the present paper. The proof, which is based on martingale techniques, even somewhat improves on the original L^2 result.

New thoughts on the vector-valued Mihlin-Hörmander multiplier theorem

Let X be a UMD space with type t and cotype q, and let T be a Fourier multiplier operator with a scalar-valued symbol m. If the Mihlin multiplier estimate holds for all partial derivatives of m up to the order n/max(t,q')+1, then T is bounded on the X-valued Bochner spaces. For scalar-valued multipliers, this improves the theorem of Girardi and Weis (J. Funct. Anal., 2003) who required similar assumptions for derivatives up to the order n/r+1, where r is a Fourier-type of X. However, the present method does not apply to operator-valued multipliers, which are also covered by the Girardi-Weis theorem.

A framework for non-homogeneous analysis on metric spaces, and the RBMO space of Tolsa

A new class of metric measure spaces is introduced and studied. This class generalises the well-established doubling metric measure spaces as well as the spaces (R^n,mu) with mu(B(x,r))<Cr^d, in which non-doubling harmonic analysis has recently been developed. It seems to be a promising framework for an abstract extension of this theory. Tolsa's space of regularised BMO functions is defined in this new setting, and the John-Nirenberg inequality is proven.
