Unknotting number and cabling

The unknotting number of knots is a difficult quantity to compute, and even its behavior under basic satelliting operations is not understood. We establish a lower bound on the unknotting number of cable knots and iterated cable knots purely in terms of the winding number of the pattern. The proof uses Alishahi-Eftekhary's bounds on unknotting number from knot Floer homology together with Hanselman-Watson's computation of the knot Floer homology of cables in terms of immersed curves in the punctured torus.

Rank inequalities for the Heegaard Floer homology of branched covers

Given a double cover between 3-manifolds branched along a nullhomologous link, we establish an inequality between the dimensions of their Heegaard Floer homologies. We discuss the relationship with the L-space conjecture and give some other topological applications, as well as an analogous result for sutured Floer homology.

Cosmetic operations and Khovanov multicurves

We prove an equivariant version of the Cosmetic Surgery Conjecture for strongly invertible knots. Our proof combines a recent result of Hanselman with the Khovanov multicurve invariants $\widetilde{\operatorname{Kh}}$ and $\widetilde{\operatorname{BN}}$. We apply the same techniques to reprove a result of Wang about the Cosmetic Crossing Conjecture and split links. Along the way, we show that $\widetilde{\operatorname{Kh}}$ and $\widetilde{\operatorname{BN}}$ detect if a Conway tangle is split.

Branched covering simply-connected 4-manifolds

We prove that any closed simply-connected smooth 4-manifold is 16-fold branched covered by a product of an orientable surface with the 2-torus, where the construction is natural with respect to spin structures. In particular this solves Problem 4.113(C) in Kirby's list. We also discuss analogous results for other families of 4-manifolds with infinite fundamental groups.

Toroidal homology spheres and SU(2)-representations

We prove that if an integer homology three-sphere contains an embedded incompressible torus, then its fundamental group admits irreducible SU(2)-representations. Our methods use instanton Floer homology, and in particular the surgery exact triangle, holonomy perturbations, and a non-vanishing result due to Kronheimer-Mrowka, as well as results about surgeries on cables due to Gordon.

Triple linking numbers and Heegaard Floer homology

We establish some new relationships between Milnor invariants and Heegaard Floer homology. This includes a formula for the Milnor triple linking number from the link Floer complex, detection results for the Whitehead link and Borromean rings, and a structural property of the $d$-invariants of surgeries on certain algebraically split links.

Dehn surgery and non-separating two-spheres

When can surgery on a null-homologous knot K in a rational homology sphere produce a non-separating sphere? We use Heegaard Floer homology to give sufficient conditions for K to be unknotted. We also discuss some applications to homology cobordism, concordance, and Mazur manifolds.

Framed instanton homology of surgeries on L-space knots

An important class of three-manifolds are L-spaces, which are rational homology spheres with the smallest possible Floer homology. For knots with an instanton L-space surgery, we compute the framed instanton Floer homology of all integral surgeries. As a consequence, if a knot has a Heegaard Floer and instanton Floer L-space surgery, then the theories agree for all integral surgeries. In order to prove the main result, we prove that the Baldwin-Sivek contact invariant in framed instanton Floer homology is homogeneous with respect to the absolute $\mathbb{Z}/2$-grading, but not the $\mathbb{Z}/4$-grading.

Distance one lens space fillings and band surgery on the trefoil knot

We prove that if the lens space $L(n, 1)$ is obtained by a surgery along a knot in the lens space $L(3,1)$ that is distance one from the meridional slope, then $n$ is in $\{-6, \pm 1, \pm 2, 3, 4, 7\}$. This result yields a classification of the coherent and non-coherent band surgeries from the trefoil to $T(2, n)$ torus knots and links. The main result is proved by studying the behavior of the Heegaard Floer $d$-invariants under integral surgery along knots in $L(3,1)$. The classification of band surgeries between the trefoil and torus knots and links is motivated by local reconnection processes in nature, which are modeled as band surgeries. Of particular interest is the study of recombination on circular DNA molecules.

Heegaard Floer homology and splicing homology spheres

We prove a basic inequality for the d-invariants of a splice of knots in homology spheres. As a result, we are able to prove a new relation on the rank of reduced Floer homology under maps between Seifert fibered homology spheres, improving results of the first and second authors. As a corollary, a degree one map between two aspherical Seifert homology spheres is homotopic to a homeomorphism if and only if the Heegaard Floer homologies are isomorphic.

Lagrangian cobordisms and Legendrian invariants in knot Floer homology

We prove that the LOSS and GRID invariants of Legendrian links in knot Floer homology behave in certain functorial ways with respect to decomposable Lagrangian cobordisms in the symplectization of the standard contact structure on $\mathbb{R}^3$. Our results give new, computable, and effective obstructions to the existence of such cobordisms.

Applications of involutive Heegaard Floer homology

We use Heegaard Floer homology to define an invariant of homology cobordism. This invariant is isomorphic to a summand of the reduced Heegaard Floer homology of a rational homology sphere equipped with a spin structure and is analogous to Stoffregen's connected Seiberg-Witten Floer homology. We use this invariant to study the structure of the homology cobordism group and, along the way, compute the involutive correction terms for certain families of three-manifolds.

Simply-connected, spineless 4-manifolds

We construct infinitely many smooth 4-manifolds which are homotopy equivalent to $S^2$ but do not admit a spine, i.e., a piecewise-linear embedding of $S^2$ which realizes the homotopy equivalence. This is the remaining case in the existence problem for codimension-2 spines in simply-connected manifolds. The obstruction comes from the Heegaard Floer $d$ invariants.

Floer homology and covering spaces

We prove a Smith-type inequality for regular covering spaces in monopole Floer homology. Using the monopole Floer / Heegaard Floer correspondence, we deduce that if a 3-manifold Y admits a p^n-sheeted regular cover that is a Z/pZ-L-space (for p prime), then Y is a Z/pZ-L-space. Further, we obtain constraints on surgeries on a knot being regular covers over other surgeries on the same knot, and over surgeries on other knots.
