USMEFT as a tool for discovery of universal new physics at high luminosity LHC

We analyze the potential of the Universal SMEFT as a tool to study universal new physics in the neutral and charged Drell-Yan processes at the high-luminosity LHC. In order to do so, we generated pseudo-data containing the contributions of beyond the standard model vector bosons to the dilepton production. Our results show that fits with the minimal theoretical bias can be used not only to unveil the existence of new physics but also to accurately extract its properties. Moreover, the results are rather stable with respect to the order of truncation of the effective field theory.

Drell-Yan production in universal theories beyond dimension-six SMEFT

We study Drell-Yan production in universal theories consistently including effects beyond dimension six in the SMEFT. Within universal SMEFT and with $C$ and $P$ conservation we find that eleven dimension-eight operators contribute in addition to the six contributing at dimension-six. We first work in an operator basis in which operators with higher derivatives of the bosonic fields have been rotated by equations of motion in favor of combinations of operators involving SM fermion currents. We derive the general form of the amplitudes consistently in the expansion to ${\cal O}(\Lambda^{-4})$ and identify eight combinations of the 17 Wilson coefficients which are physically distinguishable by studying the invariant mass distribution of the lepton pairs produced. We then introduce an extension of the parametrization of universal effects in terms of oblique parameters obtained by linearly expanding the self-energies of the electroweak gauge-bosons to ${\cal O}(q^6)$. It contains eleven oblique parameters of which only eight are generated within SMEFT at dimension-eight: $\widehat{S}$, $\widehat{T}$, $W$, $Y$, $\widehat{U}$, $X$, plus two additional which we label $W'$ and $Y'$ and show how they match at linear order with the eight identified combinations of operator coefficients. We then perform a combined analysis of a variety of LHC data on the neutral- and charged-current Drell-Yan processes with the aim of constraining the eight combinations. We compare and combine the LHC bounds with those from electroweak precision $W$ and $Z$ pole observables which can only provide constraints in four directions of the eight-parameter space. We present the results in terms of limits on the eight effective Wilson coefficients as well as on the eight oblique parameters. In each case, we study the dependence of the derived constraints on the order of the expansion considered.

Dimension-eight Operator Basis for Universal Standard Model Effective Field Theory

We present the basis of dimension-eight operators associated with universal theories. We first derive a complete list of independent dimension-eight operators formed with the Standard Model bosonic fields characteristic of such universal new physics scenarios. Without imposing C or P symmetries the basis contains 175 operators -- that is, the assumption of Universality reduces the number of independent SMEFT coefficients at dimension eight from 44807 to 175. 89 of the 175 universal operators are included in the general dimension-eight operator basis in the literature. The 86 additional operators involve higher derivatives of the Standard Model bosonic fields and can be rotated in favor of operators involving fermions using the Standard Model equations of motion for the bosonic fields. By doing so we obtain the allowed fermionic operators generated in this class of models which we map into the corresponding 86 independent combinations of operators in the dimension-eight basis of Ref. arXiv:2005.00059

Impact of dimension-eight SMEFT operators in the EWPO and Triple Gauge Couplings analysis in Universal SMEFT

We perform a complete study of the electroweak precision observables and electroweak gauge boson pair production in terms of the SMEFT up to ${\cal O}(1/\Lambda^4)$ under the assumption of universal, C and P conserving new physics. We show that the analysis of data from those two sectors allows us to obtain closed constraints in the relevant parameter space in this scenario. In particular we find that the Large Hadron Collider data can independently constrain the Wilson coefficients of the dimension-six and -eight operators directly contributing to the triple gauge boson vertices. Our results show that the impact of dimension-eight operators in the study of triple gauge couplings is small.

Large Hadron Collider Constraints on Some Simple $Z'$ Models for $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ Anomalies

We examine current Large Hadron Collider constraints on some simple $Z'$ models that significantly improve on Standard Model fits to $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ transition data. The models that we consider are the 'third family baryon number minus second family lepton number' $(B_3-L_2)$ model and the 'third family hypercharge' model and variants. The constraints are applied on parameter regions of each model that fit the $b\to s\mu^+\mu^-$ transition data and come from high-mass Drell-Yan di-muons and measurements of Standard Model processes. This latter set of observables place particularly strong bounds upon the parameter space of the $B_3-L_2$ model when the mass of the $Z'$ boson is less than 300 GeV.

Consistent higher order $\sigma(\mathcal{G} \,\mathcal{G}\rightarrow h)$, $\Gamma(h \rightarrow \mathcal{G} \,\mathcal{G})$ and $\Gamma(h \rightarrow \gamma \gamma)$ in geoSMEFT

We report consistent results for $\Gamma(h \rightarrow \gamma \gamma)$, $\sigma(\mathcal{G} \,\mathcal{G}\rightarrow h)$ and $\Gamma(h \rightarrow \mathcal{G} \,\mathcal{G})$ in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) perturbing the SM by corrections $\mathcal{O}(\bar{v}_T^2/16 \pi^2 \Lambda^2)$ in the Background Field Method (BFM) approach to gauge fixing, and to $\mathcal{O}(\bar{v}_T^4/\Lambda^4)$ using the geometric formulation of the SMEFT. We combine and modify recent results in the literature into a complete set of consistent results, uniforming conventions, and simultaneously complete the one loop results for these processes in the BFM. We emphasise calculational scheme dependence present across these processes, and how the operator and loop expansions are not independent beyond leading order. We illustrate several cross checks of consistency in the results.

EWPD in the SMEFT to dimension eight

We calculate the $\mathcal{O}(\langle H^{\dagger} H \rangle^{2} / \Lambda^{4} )$ corrections to LEP electroweak precision data using the geometric formulation of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We report our results in simple-to-use interpolation tables that allow the interpretation of this data set to dimension eight for the first time. We demonstrate the impact of these previously unknown terms in the case of a general analysis in the SMEFT, and also in the cases of two distinct models matched to dimension eight. Neglecting such dimension-eight corrections to LEP observables introduces a theoretical error in SMEFT studies. We report some preliminary studies defining such a theory error, explicitly demonstrating the effect of previously unknown dimension-eight SMEFT corrections on LEP observables.

One loop verification of SMEFT Ward Identities

We verify Standard Model Effective Field Theory Ward identities to one loop order when background field gauge is used to quantize the theory. The results we present lay the foundation of next to leading order automatic generation of results in the SMEFT, in both the perturbative and non-perturbative expansion using the geoSMEFT formalism, and background field gauge.

Sensitivity of Future Hadron Colliders to Leptoquark Pair Production in the Di-Muon Di-Jets Channel

We estimate the future sensitivity of the high luminosity (HL-) and high energy (HE-) modes of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and of a 100 TeV future circular collider (FCC-hh) to leptoquark (LQ) pair production in the muon-plus-jet decay mode of each LQ. Such LQs are motivated by the fact they provide an explanation for the neutral current $B-$anomalies. For each future collider, Standard Model (SM) backgrounds and detector effects are simulated. From these, sensitivities of each collider are found. Our measures of sensitivity are based upon a Run II ATLAS search, which we also use for validation. We illustrate with a narrow scalar ('$S_3$') LQ and find that, in our channel, the HL-LHC has exclusion sensitivity to LQ masses up to 1.8 TeV, the HE-LHC up to 4.8 TeV and the FCC-hh up to 13.5 TeV.

Ward Identities for the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

We derive Ward identities for the Standard Model Effective Field Theory using the background field method. The resulting symmetry constraints on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory are basis independent, and constrain the perturbative and power-counting expansions. A geometric description of the field connections, and real representations for the $\rm SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ generators, underlies the derivation.

The Higgs width in the SMEFT

We calculate the total and partial inclusive Higgs widths at leading order in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We report results incorporating SMEFT corrections for two and four body Higgs decays through vector currents in this limit. The narrow width approximation is avoided and all phase space integrals are directly evaluated. We explain why the narrow width approximation fails more significantly in the SMEFT compared to the SM, despite the narrowness of the observed $\rm SU(2) \times U(1)$ bosons in both theories. Our results are presented in a manner that allows various input parameter schemes to be used, and they allow the inclusive branching ratios and decay widths of the Higgs to be numerically determined without a Monte Carlo generation of phase space for each Wilson coefficient value chosen.

Collider Constraints on $Z^\prime$ Models for Neutral Current $B-$Anomalies

We examine current collider constraints on some simple $Z^\prime$ models that fit neutral current $B-$anomalies, including constraints coming from measurements of Standard Model (SM) signatures at the LHC. The `MDM' simplified model is not constrained by the SM measurements but {\em is} strongly constrained by a 139 fb$^{-1}$ 13 TeV ATLAS di-muon search. Constraints upon the `MUM' simplified model are much weaker. A combination of the current $B_s$ mixing constraint and ATLAS' $Z^\prime$ search implies $M_{Z^\prime}>1.2$ TeV in the Third Family Hypercharge Model example case. LHC SM measurements rule out a portion of the parameter space of the model for $M_{Z^\prime}<1.5$ TeV.

The Gauge-Higgs Legacy of the LHC Run II

We present a global analysis of the Higgs and electroweak sector based on LHC Run II and electroweak precision observables. We show which measurements provide the leading constraints on Higgs-related operators, and how the achieved LHC precision makes it necessary to combine rate measurements with electroweak precision observables. The SFitter framework allows us to include kinematic distributions beyond pre-defined ATLAS and CMS observables, independently study correlations, and avoid Gaussian assumptions for theory uncertainties. These Run II results are a step towards a precision physics program at the LHC, interpreted in terms of effective operators.

Hadron Collider Sensitivity to Fat Flavourful $Z^\prime$s for $R_{K^{(\ast)}}$

We further investigate the case where new physics in the form of a massive $Z^\prime$ particle explains apparent measurements of lepton flavour non-universality in $B \rightarrow K^{(\ast)} l^+ l^-$ decays. Hadron collider sensitivities for direct production of such $Z^\prime$s have been previously studied in the narrow width limit for a $\mu^+ \mu^-$ final state. Here, we extend the analysis to sizeable decay widths and improve the sensitivity estimate for the narrow width case. We estimate the sensitivities of the high luminosity 14 TeV Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), a high energy 27 TeV LHC (HE-LHC), as well as a potential 100 TeV future circular collider (FCC). The HL-LHC has sensitivity to narrow $Z^\prime$ resonances consistent with the anomalies. In one of our simplified models the FCC could probe 23 TeV $Z^\prime$ particles with widths of up to 0.35 of their mass at 95\% confidence level (CL). In another model, the HL-LHC and HE-LHC cover sizeable portions of parameter space, but the whole of perturbative parameter space can be covered by the FCC.

Electric Dipole Moments from Post-Sphaleron Baryogenesis

We consider a model in which baryogenesis occurs at low scale, at a temperature below the electroweak phase transition. This model involves new diquark-type scalars which carry baryon number. Baryon number violation is introduced in the scalar potential, permitting $\Delta B=2$ violating process involving Standard Model quarks while avoiding stringent proton decay constraints. Depending on their quantum number assignment, the diquark-type scalars can couple to either right or left handed quarks, or to both. We show that this model can provide a viable explanation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe provided that the coupling to left handed quarks are present. However, the coexistence of couplings to left and right handed quarks introduces important phenomenological constraints on the model, such as radiative contributions to quark masses and the generation of electric dipole moments for nuclei, which probe the CP even and CP odd products of the relevant couplings constants, respectively. We demonstrate that the strongest such constraints arise from electric dipole moment measurements of the neutron and $^{199}$Hg. These constraints are sufficiently strong that, in the absence of an intricate flavor structure, baryogenesis must be dominated by the couplings of the new scalars to left handed quarks.

Anomalous neutral gauge boson interactions and simplified models

Trilinear $Z$ boson interactions are sensitive probes both of new sources of $CP$ violation in physics Beyond the Standard Model and of new particle thresholds. Measurements of trilinear $Z$ interactions are typically interpreted in the frameworks of anomalous couplings and effective field theory, both of which require care in interpretation. To obtain a quantitative picture of the power of these measurements when interpreted in a TeV-scale context, we investigate the anatomy of $ZZZ$ interactions and consider two minimal and perturbative simplified models which induce such interactions through new scalar and fermion loops at the weak scale, focusing on $ZZ$ and vector boson fusion-induced $Zjj$ production at the LHC and $ZZ$ production at a future $e^+ e^-$ collider. We show that both threshold and non-threshold effects often are small compared to the sensitivity of the LHC, while the increased sensitivity of a future lepton collider should allow us to constrain such scenarios through associated electroweak precision effects complementary to direct searches at hadron colliders.

Unitarity Constraints on Dimension-six Operators II: Including Fermionic Operators

We analyze the scattering of fermions, Higgs and electroweak gauge bosons in order to obtain the partial-wave unitarity bounds on dimension-six effective operators, including those involving fermions. We also quantify whether, at the LHC energies, the dimension-six operators lead to unitarity violation after taking into account the presently available constraints on their Wilson coefficients. Our results show that for most dimension-six operators relevant for the LHC physics there is no unitarity violation at the LHC energies, and consequently, there is no need for the introduction of form factors in the experimental and phenomenological analyses, making them model independent. We also identify two operators for which unitarity violation is still an issue at the LHC Run-II.

Exploring Extended Scalar Sectors with Di-Higgs Signals: A Higgs EFT Perspective

We consider extended scalar sectors of the Standard Model as ultraviolet-complete motivations for studying the effective Higgs self-interaction operators of the Standard Model effective field theory. We investigate all motivated heavy scalar models which generate the dimension-6 effective operator, $|H|^6$, at tree level and proceed to identify the full set of tree-level dimension-six operators by integrating out the heavy scalars. Of seven models which generate $|H|^6$ at tree level only two, quadruplets of hypercharge $Y=3Y_H$ and $Y=Y_H$, generate only this operator. Next we perform global fits to constrain relevant Wilson coefficients from the LHC single Higgs measurements as well as the electroweak oblique parameters $S$ and $T$. We find that the $T$ parameter puts very strong constraints on the Wilson coefficient of the $|H|^6$ operator in the triplet and quadruplet models, while the singlet and doublet models could still have Higgs self-couplings which deviate significantly from the standard model prediction. To determine the extent to which the $|H|^6$ operator could be constrained, we study the dihiggs signatures at the future 100 TeV collider and explore future sensitivity of this operator. Projected onto the Higgs potential parameters of the extended scalar sectors, with $3$ ab$^{-1}$ luminosity data we will be able to explore the Higgs potential parameters in all seven models.
