Entropy and Quantum Kolmogorov Complexity: A Quantum Brudno's Theorem

In classical information theory, entropy rate and Kolmogorov complexity per symbol are related by a theorem of Brudno. In this paper, we prove a quantum version of this theorem, connecting the von Neumann entropy rate and two notions of quantum Kolmogorov complexity, both based on the shortest qubit descriptions of qubit strings that, run by a universal quantum Turing machine, reproduce them as outputs.

Do extremists impose the structure of social networks?

The structure and the properties of complex networks essentially depend on the way how nodes get connected to each other. We assume here that each node has a feature which attracts the others. We model the situation by assigning two numbers to each node, ωand α, where ωindicates some property of the node and αthe affinity towards that property. A node A is more likely to establish a connection with a node B if B has a high value of ωand A has a high value of α. Simple computer simulations show that networks built according to this principle have a degree distribution with a power law tail, whose exponent is determined only by the nodes with the largest value of the affinity α(the "extremists"). This means that the extremists lead the formation process of the network and manage to shape the final topology of the system. The latter phenomenon may have implications in the study of social networks and in epidemiology.

Phase transition and critical behavior in a model of organized criticality

We study a model of ``organized'' criticality, where a single avalanche propagates through an \textit{a priori} static (i.e., organized) sandpile configuration. The latter is chosen according to an i.i.d. distribution from a Borel probability measure $ρ$ on $[0,1]$. The avalanche dynamics is driven by a standard toppling rule, however, we simplify the geometry by placing the problem on a directed, rooted tree. As our main result, we characterize which $ρ$ are critical in the sense that they do not admit an infinite avalanche but exhibit a power-law decay of avalanche sizes. Our analysis reveals close connections to directed site-percolation, both in the characterization of criticality and in the values of the critical exponents.

Chained Typical Subspaces - a Quantum Version of Breiman's Theorem

We give an equivalent finitary reformulation of the classical Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem which has an immediate translation to the case of ergodic quantum lattice systems. This version of a quantum Breiman theorem can be derived from the proof of the quantum Shannon-McMillan theorem presented in our previous work (math.DS/0207121).

The Shannon-McMillan Theorem for Ergodic Quantum Lattice Systems

We formulate and prove a quantum Shannon-McMillan theorem. The theorem demonstrates the significance of the von Neumann entropy for translation invariant ergodic quantum spin systems on n-dimensional lattices: the entropy gives the logarithm of the essential number of eigenvectors of the system on large boxes. The one-dimensional case covers quantum information sources and is basic for coding theorems.
