A Rudin-Carleson theorem with uniform approximation for manifold-valued maps

Given a closed set $E \subset \partial {\mathbb D}$ of measure zero and a continuous function $\varphi : E \to {\mathbb C}$, the classical Rudin-Carleson interpolation theorem states that there exists a continuous function $F : \overline {\mathbb D} \to {\mathbb C}$ that is holomorphic on ${\mathbb D}$ and satisfies $F\rvert_E = \varphi$. In this paper we obtain a generalisation of the Rudin-Carleson theorem for maps $\varphi : E \to X$ into arbitrary connected complex manifolds $X$ that combines interpolation of $\varphi$ on $E$ with uniform approximation on compact subsets of $\overline {\mathbb D} \setminus E$ of another given continuous map $f:\overline {\mathbb D} \to X$ that is holomorphic on ${\mathbb D}$. Under the further assumption that $X$ is an Oka manifold we obtain a corollary that combines Rudin-Carleson interpolation of a continuous map $\varphi : \overline {\mathbb D} \to X$ on $E$ with Runge approximation of $\varphi$ on a compact set $K\subset {\mathbb D}$ without any holes on which $\varphi$ is holomorphic.

Families of Proper Holomorphic Embeddings and Carleman-type Theorems with parameters

We solve the problem of simultaneously embedding properly holomorphically into $\Bbb C^2$ a whole family of $n$-connected domains $\Omega_r\subset\Bbb P^1$ such that none of the components of $\Bbb P^1\setminus\Omega_r$ reduces to a point, by constructing a continuous mapping $\Xi\colon\bigcup_r\{r\}\times\Omega_r\to\Bbb C^2$ such that $\Xi(r,\cdot)\colon\Omega_r\hookrightarrow\Bbb C^2$ is a proper holomorphic embedding for every $r$. To this aim, a parametric version of both the Anders\'en-Lempert procedure and Carleman's Theorem is formulated and proved.

Oka properties of ball complements

Let $n>1$ be an integer. We prove that holomorphic maps from Stein manifolds $X$ of dimension $<n$ to the complement $\mathbb{C}^n\setminus L$ of a compact convex set $L\subset\mathbb{C}^n$ satisfy the basic Oka property with approximation and interpolation. If $L$ is polynomially convex then the same holds when $2\dim X < n$. We also construct proper holomorphic maps, immersions and embeddings $X\to\mathbb{C}^n$ with additional control of the range, thereby extending classical results of Remmert, Bishop and Narasimhan.

A soft Oka principle for proper holomorphic embeddings of open Riemann surfaces into $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$

Let $X$ be an open Riemann surface. We prove an Oka property on the approximation and interpolation of continuous maps $X \to (\mathbb{C}^*)^2$ by proper holomorphic embeddings, provided that we permit a smooth deformation of the complex structure on $X$ outside a certain set. This generalises and strengthens a recent result of Alarcon and Lopez. We also give a Forstneric-Wold theorem for proper holomorphic embeddings (with respect to the given complex structure) of certain open Riemann surfaces into $(\mathbb{C}^*)^2$.

Proper holomorphic embeddings into Stein manifolds with the density property

We prove that a Stein manifold of dimension $d$ admits a proper holomorphic embedding into any Stein manifold of dimension at least $2d+1$ satisfying the holomorphic density property. This generalizes classical theorems of Remmert, Bishop and Narasimhan pertaining to embeddings into complex Euclidean spaces, as well as several other recent results.

Proper holomorphic immersions in homotopy classes of maps from finitely connected planar domains into CxC*

Gromov, in his seminal 1989 paper on the Oka principle, proved that every continuous map from a Stein manifold into an elliptic manifold is homotopic to a holomorphic map. Previously we have shown that, given a continuous map $X \to \C\times\C^*$ from a finitely connected planar domain $X$ without isolated boundary points, a stronger Oka property holds, namely that the map is homotopic to a proper holomorphic embedding. Here we show that every continuous map from a finitely connected planar domain, possibly with punctures, into $\C\times\C^*$ is homotopic to a proper immersion that identifies at most countably many pairs of distinct points, and in most cases, only finitely many pairs. By examining situations in which the immersion is injective, we obtain a strong Oka property for embeddings of some classes of planar domains with isolated boundary points. It is not yet clear whether a strong Oka property for embeddings holds in general when the domain has isolated boundary points. We conclude with some observations on the existence of a null-homotopic proper holomorphic embedding $\C^* \to \C\times\C^*$.

Acyclic embeddings of open Riemann surfaces into new examples of elliptic manifolds

The geometric notion of ellipticity for complex manifolds was introduced by Gromov in his seminal 1989 paper on the Oka principle, and is a sufficient condition for a manifold to be Oka. In the current paper we present contributions to three open questions involving elliptic and Oka manifolds. We show that quotients of C^n by discrete groups of affine transformations are elliptic. Combined with an example of Margulis, this yields new examples of elliptic manifolds with free fundamental groups and vanishing higher homotopy. Finally we show that every open Riemann surface embeds acyclically into an elliptic manifold, giving a partial answer to a question of Larusson.

A strong Oka principle for embeddings of some planar domains into CxC*

Gromov, in his seminal 1989 paper on the Oka principle, introduced the notion of an elliptic manifold and proved that every continuous map from a Stein manifold to an elliptic manifold is homotopic to a holomorphic map. We show that a much stronger Oka principle holds in the special case of maps from certain open Riemann surfaces called circular domains into CxC*, namely that every continuous map is homotopic to a proper holomorphic embedding. An important ingredient is a generalisation to CxC* of recent results of Wold and Forstneric on the long-standing problem of properly embedding open Riemann surfaces into C^2, with an additional result on the homotopy class of the embeddings. We also give a complete solution to a question that arises naturally in Larusson's holomorphic homotopy theory, of the existence of acyclic embeddings of Riemann surfaces with abelian fundamental group into 2-dimensional elliptic Stein manifolds.
