Controlled pairing symmetries in a Fermi-Hubbard ladder with band flattening

Band flattening has been identified as key ingredient to correlation phenomena in Moir\'e materials and beyond. Here, we examine strongly repulsive fermions on a ladder -- a minimal platform for unconventional $d$-wave pairing -- and show that flattening of the lower band through an additional diagonal hopping term produces non-Fermi liquid behavior, evidenced by the violation of Luttinger's theorem, as well as axial $d$-wave pairing correlations. Alternatively, plaquette ring exchange can also generate pairing, albeit with a distinct diagonal $d$-wave pairing symmetry. Hence, our finding showcases a competition of different unconventional pairing channels, and demonstrates via a simple model how band geometry can induce fermionic pairing. This offers broadly relevant insights for correlated flat-band systems, ranging from ultracold atoms to strongly interacting electrons in solids.

Extended Bose-Hubbard model with dipolar excitons

The Hubbard model constitutes one of the most celebrated theoretical frameworks of condensed-matter physics. It describes strongly correlated phases of interacting quantum particles confined in lattice potentials. For bosons, the Hubbard Hamiltonian has been deeply scrutinised for short-range on-site interactions. However, accessing longer-range couplings has remained elusive experimentally. This marks the frontier towards the extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian that allows insulating ordered phases at fractional lattice fillings. Here we implement this Hamiltonian by confining semiconductor dipolar excitons in an artificial two-dimensional square lattice. Strong dipolar repulsions between nearest neighbouring lattice sites then stabilise an insulating state at half filling. This characteristic feature of the extended Bose-Hubbard model exhibits signatures theoretically expected for a checkerboard spatial order. Our work thus highlights that dipolar excitons enable controlled implementations of boson-like arrays with strong off-site interactions, in lattices with programmable geometries and over 100 sites.

Attosecond Physics and Quantum Information Science

In this article, we will discuss a possibility of a symbiosis for attophysics (AP) and quantum information (QI) and quantum technologies (QT). We will argue that within few years AP will reach Technology Readiness Level (RTL) 4-5 in QT, and will thus become a legitimate platform for QI and QT.

Interacting second-order topological insulators in one-dimensional fermions with correlated hopping

Higher-order topological crystalline phases in low-dimensional interacting quantum systems represent a challenging and largely unexplored research topic. Here, we derive a Hamiltonian describing fermions interacting through correlated hopping processes that break chiral invariance, but preserve both inversion and time-reversal symmetries. In this way, we show that our one-dimensional model gives rise to an interacting second-order topological insulating phase that supports gapped edge states. The topological nature of such interacting phase turns out to be revealed by both long-range order of a non-local string correlation function and by even degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum. For strong interactions we instead find that the topological crystalline phase is destroyed and replaced by a singlet superconducting phase. The latter, characterized by local fermionic pairing, turns out to appear both in a homogeneous and in a phase separated form. Relevantly, the derived one-dimensional model and the second-order topological insulator can be explored and investigated in atomic quantum simulators.
